Sorry everyone for my absentia. Hubby had an perforated ulcer and we did some quality ER/hosital/doctor time. If you haven't spent any time in a medical facility lately, let me assure you how much fun it is to wait with your loved one on a gurney outside in the hall watching doctors and other various medical personnel scurry back and forth for seven hours. I finally decided to take my laptop with me for the endless medicinal procedures so at least I had something to do besides listen to the melodious sound of my husband's pain. Poor guy.

The school year is shaping up nicely. I had my first evaluation from the state. In October, the national committee will be down to observe.

I am so far behind on DA life, there is no way I'll ever be able to catch up. I know I owe some people some contest winning prizes and I promise to to fulfill those obligations this week and I apologize for the delay.

I have finally caught up with my 2500 deviation watches, and am working on everything else now.
(Dang, I am s l o w! )

I know it's going to take forever for me to come up with enough interesting things to complete this taggage ...

1. I am very disorganized. I have a hard time sticking to one task at a time so I have little piles of whatever I'm working on scattered around.

2. I have twins. Boy/girl - natural, they run in the family. My mom is a twin. Yes, it does skip a generation.

3. I lived in Puerto Rico from the age of 13 - 18.

4. I have a really hard time with my left and right. I don't know if it's because I'm left handed or I'm just naturally a big doof.

5. My name is Melissa, and I'm a Lost fan. There ... I feel so much better now that I've gotten that off my chest.

6. I love brain games. Crosswords, sudoku, anagrams, you name it.

7. I was in the Humacao Philharmonic Orchestra when I was 17 years old. Third chair flute. Ummm ... no flutes were harmed nor experimented with during this time period ... honest.

8. My grandfather was adopted in 1916 and the records were sealed by court order. Therefore we're not sure of our lineage, however, we have recently requested that these documents be opened. I'm pretty sure we're related to bootleggers.

I think I'm supposed to post the rules and re-tag five other people, but I seem to have misplaced the rules. ;)

Got together with my cousins and their kiddos today. We went to the weekly free movie at our local cinema. Of course, we didn't go empty handed. You know the theatre employees were whispering behind our backs with the size and bulk of our handbags bulging. :giggle: Let me justify my actions with the fact that last week we went and spent almost $40 on popcorn, juice and sodas. :faint:


I'm getting a lot of "Updated Version" deviations. Are you? It's confusing, with the new V6 edition, but I'm still loving it. :D I went through over 3K deviations, over 100 journals in the past two days. I'm catching up, slowly but surely. :thumbsup:


Still haven't had much time to work on art. :cry: Although I did play with my Wacom tablet and Corel Painter X last night from about 11 pm to 1 am. I'm going to need ALOT of practice but dang, it's fun and addicting as heck!

Good news all around! :iconspinplz:
Logan is doing great. His pneumonia has calmed down and his racking cough is almost completely gone! :w00t: The cardiologist, after examining Logan's X-rays said that "It appears that his heart had been 'moved' due to the inflamation brought on by the pneumonia along with the angle of the x-ray taken. However, after further testing, newer x-rays, the results of his EKG, and after two weeks of antibiotics, everything appears to be back to normal."

Yes, his heart is located slightly "off". It's more centered in his chest as opposed to being located on the left side, but according to the doctor, that is preferable to the more serious dextra-cardia. I can't tell you how relieved we are and we want to thank you all for your kind comments and concern.

More good news, my husband took it upon himself to celebrate and just he and I went to a fabulous resort ... in Ocho Rios, Jamaica! No kids!!! :boogie: For the long holiday weekend, he surprised me with a very relaxing and gorgeous change of pace. Here's where we went [link] This is why I married him. So thoughtful! (He's sexy too :giggle: )

Even more good news! I did receive this beautiful dedication. :love: I :heart: my new present, mon ami. Merci!



Of course, I'm more behind than EVER in life, DA life, Neo life. Everything! Please forgive me. :cry:

What a week! Life always seems to throw unexpected curves at you. Some curves are not what we hope for, but you live, you learn and you go on. :nod:

This week, we learned that my youngest son, the twin, has walking pneumonia and he's also been diagnosed with dextra-cardia. That's where his heart is located on the right side of his body instead of the left. This would explain his frequent respiratory ailments. We have lots of testing ahead of us. Prognosis however, is not all bad, so that's encouraging.

On the plus side, my Wacom Intuous3 9x12 got here today. Yay! :w00t: Hopefully I'll get to play with it some in the near future. :D

I have to apologize as I'm beyond behind in my replies, comments, fav's, dev watches ... acckk! I promise to try and catch up with the upcoming week. I'll have off work, so I'll be able to spend more time taking care of fun business. This includes the final results of the Eco-Awareness Contest due to be announced on June 30th. ;)

The CBS affiliate station who came to our school and produced a human interest story entitled "A Lesson in Life" called today. They wanted to do a follow up story on how the children are coping with the loss and I was happy to report to them about our new Killdeer Nature Project. The reporter was almost as happy as our students. They will be returning to our school on Tuesday, May 27th to do a much happier story this time.

Our class went out this morning and found the proud parents protecting their progeny.

This morning we had a new addition to our family. A brand new family has graced us.

This little beauty made a nest out by our back parking lot.


This morning @ 10 am I took this picture of her eggs.


This afternoon @ 2:30 pm I went to check on our guests and ... now there are three! :D


Nature always finds a way. Thank goodness. :heart:

The Eco-Awareness Contest.

There is an appalling lack of awareness of all things ecological. It is a sad state of affairs and I am extremely passionate about spreading the word. The Killdeer Family and their story have been featured on the six o'clock CBS news and is appropriately titled, "A Lesson in Nature". Read the story below to learn more. The CBS news affiliate came out today and filmed the story on the heart-breaking plight of the Killdeers. They stayed for almost three hours interviewing and filming. Our story, "A Lesson on Nature", was featured on the six o'clock news. The Sun Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale's major newspaper will be at our school on Thursday to recount our story to share with millions of South Floridians. Take a stand, speak up ... be heard!

This is how the contest came about:

On Earth Day 2008, our preschool children went out to clean up our neighborhood. We stumbled across a small bird that appeared injured. When I went to investigate, to our joy and surprise we discovered that she was not injured, but protecting her nest and newly laid eggs. Meet my friend Mrs. Killdeer. She has taken up residence in the backyard of the school where I am a preschool teacher. My students and I have observed her and her "husband" for almost three weeks and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their babies. We've studied them intently, both with our own eyes and by researching their species on the internet. We've learned that she employs a "broken-wing" defense mechanism ... by doing this, she lures predators away from her babies and is actually a true fighter. They are friendly and not overtly agressive yet cautious. If you get too close, they will, as experienced personally by myself, indeed fly directly at you to distract you. Believe you me, I must have cringed and jumped at least 5 feet into the air when "mommy" swooped towards me ... and faked a broken wing so that I wouldn't get too close to their nest. She thoroughly convinced me to leave their offspring alone and to focus on them and to not attempt to immortalize their future family on film. At least for a short while. heh

They eat small rodents, snakes and insects. The babies will hatch ... not bald and less than attractive as with most avian infants, but fuzzy and poofy ... much like a baby chicky. Can you imagine these fluffly little baby killdeers with those gorgeous black and white rings around their necks? Popping out of their shells and immediately commencing to search for a tasty bug? Can you imagine the anticipation we are experiencing with each passing day? We've printed out photos of what these little birds will look like once they hatch and are eagerly awaiting their birth days.

All of my little four and five year old students ... each day, go outside and set a bowl of water and clear any debris from her nesting site. I know there is no way she'll take advantage of the administrations of my well-intentioned kiddos, but their heart is in the right place and we are so excited.

Last night, some uncaring, heartless and soul-less people broke into our facility and used their car as some huge wrecking machine. An unfeeling toy. Wreaking havoc and mayhem. They executed what is known as "donuts" in our field. This is what is left of our little killdeer family's nest.

What do you say to a pre-kindergarten child when they ask about these defenseless creatures? .... Some of the most repeated questions I hear are, "Where are they now?" "Are they died?" "Are they in heaven?"

I can not even tell you how enraged and helpless I feel everytime I have to explain to these youngsters about the callous and thoughtless actions of others. There is a bone deep ache in my heart when I see their eyes fill with tears. A feeling of helplessness engulfs me when I see them try to comprehend the finality of the killdeer's fate.

I want to punish these callous humans. Not with physicality, but with artistic emotions. I have decided to channel my fury and volatile emotions into a contest. I challenge you to express youselves.

I will donate a one year subsciption to the one whom I feel most captures the rage/helplessness/fury/unfairness/pity/empathy/sorrow that I am experiencing at this moment. A six month sub to 2nd place and a three month sub to 3rd place.
