Been arsing around with CSS... Cute.

Settling in here at Bangor, had three sunny days on the trot so all is good. Ph.D is going slowly. Spent several weeks putting labs together which was hard work (carrying around titanic marble slabs... not good) but getting in at 10am and leaving at 3pm is ace! But then it all went wrong, the fume cupboards we need to use (just cupboards with an extractor fan, for working with toxic/volatile chemicals) weren't working. Some bird has built it's nest in the vent. So... two weeks of reading papers and sitting around later, they manage to get it out. Not so good.

Still not made it into the darkroom yet though, which sucks. Apparently the photography society here is "dormant" due to lack of interest. Permanent darkroom set up in the union basement, what a waste.. Fortunately, I've got all the bits I need to make cyanotypes now. No darkroom required (just big-ass negs). Looking out for a cheap 4x5, but going to try printing inkjet transparencies as well... Hopefully it'll work.

Just started developing a roll of Ilford Pan F+ in Rodinal and, being a complete dumb fuck, accidentally diluted 1:200 instead of the 1:50 I was aiming for. So, going to use the 2 sodding hours I'm going to have to leave it for to do something on here... Anyway, that last dumb journal has been up for ever. Time for an update!

I finally finished work on friday. Work doesn't agree with me, really can't hack the daily drudge (especially when it's up at 6am every day and back after 7pm). Feeling drained all the time isn't good. Next stop is North Wales for my Ph.D. Start in March, still haven't sorted where I'm going to live yet... meh.

Photography has taken a back seat recently, not feeling particularly motivated. Haven't taken much new stuff in ages, got a bit of a back log from a while ago though, might post something one of these days... stranger things have happened.

Saw Born into Brothels the other day, amazing film, highly reccommended. Interesting, uplifting and some of the photos are genuinely amazing.

Turned my bedroom into a darkroom. Sort of. Cardboard over the windows, enlarger on the floor in a corner, 'wet bench' in the shower:

As a set up, it's bit shit really, but it's fun to be printing again.

Exams are over now, have been for a day or so.. Just had to sober up before coming on here.. Also, I had to wait until I had reached a few more messages to make a round number (see below..)

Wow, feels kind of strange... anti-climactic in a way. Four years of work over... Of course, just to make it interesting, a pay dispute between lectures and universities is meaning that there's a good chance that the exams won't be marked for a while. Never mind, no job lined up anyway

So, DD malarky's over, I'm going to be replying to stuff over the next few days, but it'll probably take me a while. I really appreciate everyone that's taken the time to comment on my work, look through my gallery etc..!

No news really, although I have bought some new cameras/lenses: 2 Zorki 4s (+Jupiter 8s [50mm]), a Jupiter 12 [35mm] and a Zeiss Super Ikonta (6x9 folding camera). Will be testing them out shortly. Got one new roll processed, but not really had much time for photography. That's all going to change from now though, will definitely start submitting again soon!

1) I have a bizarre relationship with numbers. I have to wait until round numbers before doing anything... Also, I always look at a clock just before 22:22:22 (i.e. 22 minutes and 22 seconds past 10pm), used to be 11:11:11 a few years ago.. Incidentally, both numbers are the same when viewed upside down on a digital clock.

2) I don't speak any language other than English fluently, or even remotely well, but keep slipping the occasional word in mid-sentence.

3) I keep counting down whenever I'm doing anything. For example, I'll walk from one room to the next or open up a programme on my computer and try to have finished before counting down from ten to zero...

4) I make myself use my left-hand occasionally, I'm trying to become ambidextrous.

5) I stand in strange places at random for no apparent reason. For example, this morning, I brushed my teeth while stood on my desk.

6) I can wake up at any time, as long as I write the required time on my pillow with a finger before I go to sleep.

That wierded anyone out yet?? Did me, realised just how many things there are.. plenty more than I've put down here. lol

Think this thing has run its course long ago so I won't tag anyone else... But feel free to take a tag if you see this and want to try it.

In the thick of exams at the moment. Not been on here much at all lately, I've hidden my laptop away so I won't be tempted to waste time on it. But, I nip to the computer rooms for five minutes to print some stuff off (accidentally glancing at dA) and what's happened? DD!

Couldn't let it pass without a comment, but I haven't got time to do any more than this. Will have a big dA session when exams are over (roll on June!!).

In the mean time, I'll just say a big thanks to everyone who's faved and commented, I'll get round to answering soon I promise! Biggest thanks of all go to for the suggestion, you're the best!

Is it just me, or is anyone else seeing this: [link] ???

On any browse-like page with loads of thumbnails (browse, peoples galleries, search etc) I just get a few loading up, and then it hanging indefinitely (also jamming up anything else that is trying to load incidentally)

Don't know if it's just my uni network that's trying to stop me spending too much time here, or it's more widespread...

also, anyone have ideas of how to improve the situation? (already tried micdt's dAspeedup trick, worked like a treat for a few weeks, then this.. but with/without doesn't help anymore)

Apologies for a little bit of spamming folks, just figured out how to use my new scanner (and photoshop's sharpening tools) a bit better...

Only redoing a few...

btw, try Unsharp masking with:

Amount - 150%
Radius - 3
Threshold - 0

on a ~2400ppi resolution image... magic!

always leave Threshold at 0, but adjust amount and radius up/down with resolution...

I've come back to university to learn some horrifying news, the darkroom here in college has been torn out!!

Ok, not quite as dramatic as it sounds, it is being rebuilt in a much better location but the plumbing and electricity is taking forever so I'm stuck with a folder full of negatives and several rolls of film unable to do anything. Very frustrating.

On a more positive note, I've joined Durham University Photography Society (~durhamphotosoc) Who seem a pretty decent bunch.

In more exciting news, I've got a new camera! A Yashicamat LM, looks great. Can't wait to get some results back but to be honest, just loading the film is fun enough

Corfu Holiday

Just returned from a holiday to Corfu with one roll of B/W, one of velvia 50 and another of the new velvia 100.. all together over 100 pictures. Not that much I suppose from 2 weeks, but then again I was staying in Kavos, the least photogenic location in all the world..

Seems like ages since I've been on here properly..

Almost a fortnight since my last exam but have been even busier after than before.. Not quite one long party, but more or less..

Finally saw Revenge of the Sith the other day (better but still lacking the old magic) but apart from that I haven't been up to much.

Little time for photography unfortunately and most chances have been spoilt by rain. Last weekend the Durham Regatta and Classic Car Rally was on. A perfect photo opportunity, but it was freezing cold and chucking it down

Maybe I'm too much of a fair weather photographer.. maybe I'm sensible...

Got some slide film back from processing the other week too. Have to say, if you've never tried it, you're missing out. I got a roll of Fujichrome Velvia ISO50 cheap from eBay and it's fantastic. The detail is amazing and the colours unbelievable (particularly the greens and reds). Plus you can cross process it for some wierd results. On that note, I've just joined - promoting analogueness among the sea of digital lovers that is deviantart..

Photography society here in college is having an exhibition soon so that should be good, entering a few items.. Apart from that, it's just chilling out till results on friday.... shudder...

I'm a subscriber! How cool is that?? Only for a week though... thanks go to a random number generator somewhere in the depths of DeviantArt!!

Unfortunately, this is happening just as I'm in the middle of exams, won't be able to enjoy it properly. Oh well...

Might post something more useful later, but I've got a nightmare exam tomorrow and I'm really not prepared.
