I don't put my web prototypes on dA as a general rule because when I sign off on a site the design becomes property of the client. Well I guess this is also a plug for me, I know there are many people out there aspiring to enrich their web skills, and being the nice person I am I'm happy to help them out. I see a lot of MySpace layouts out there that look terrible, and MySpace + CSS I think is where many people first encounter web design. It's disappointing to see people sacrifice integrity of design to attempt to get to an unreachable end-result. I'm sure many of the people on MySpace with badly styled layouts had a much prettier picture in their head, but lacked the ability to execute it.

So feel free to ask me questions about web design, HTML, CSS, or even JavaScript, VBScript.

Sorry, my journal entries are never really about... stuff. But more, things. Things are better than stuff anyway.
Well to conclude, eat kebabs, drink beer, be happy. To quote Lazlo, "It's better to burn out than to fade away."

Well spent a week learning to ski. That was fun. Did something to my knee on the last day and now I can't walk too well, but it's getting better so don't everyone send me flowers and chocolate just yet. Just send money. It was fun, but in all honesty Australia, being a country that resides three quarters of a mile from the Sun, really doesn't look like it's cut out to have snow. Yet Australians persist, and ski in the mountains. Perisher has 40 ski lifts apparently. When we got there an impressive five were open, and when we left I think 24 were open. Not that I actually saw more than about six. All in all a good time was had, and it was fun to spend a week with my best friend, girlfriend, and some other people who we won't mention again.

So now I'm here (or there, depending on where you're sitting), bored out of my brain, minding the house. Rest of the family saw fit to scatter themselves about the continent. Yep... pretty bored. Maybe I can still swing by the bakery...

This journal entry is dedicated to my new favourite piece of software, Sketchup (www.sketchup.com). As an Industrial Designer (Architects will find this program even more useful), it always helps if I can create quick 3D visualisations of my concepts. Normally I do this with blue polystyrene foam, a hot wire cutter (melts the foam with a hot wire) and sandpaper (fine touches). However if I get an idea late at night, that sucks because I can't get to the workshop. Long story short, this program does "sketch-modelling" exceptionally well. Think of it as a barebones 3DStudio. I don't know if it can animate yet, but it is certainly capable of exporting to all the big CAD formats, which is also great. I built some cool futuristic skyscrapers just while I was messing around with the tools. I have to say, this program is fantastic. I highly recommend it to 3D Modellers/Concept artists/Designers/Architects/Planners, and anyone who likes to make stuff! Well worth the (relatively) modest price tag. Anyway I think you can get a demo, so even if you don't use CAD much, d/l it and have a shot, it's fun to play with!

Well that's my 2 copper, Oh, and no, I wasn't paid by anyone to say this.
And so ends my shameless plug.

Well 2006 is well and truly not underway for me. I've had very little work (web design), and as such am still exceedingly poor after the Christmas spendathon. On the upside I have a Digital SLR. I know I've mentioned it 1000 times already, but I love it, it's my baby. Anyway, as a corollary (Spelling?) to this lack of work, I've been spending a lot of time with my old friend/enemy, World of Warcraft. Fun fun fun...
Anyway, hopefully I can screenshot "1,337 pageviews" that would be cool.

Well Christmas was fun, and I'd like to wish you all an even more belated Merry Christmas, and if you object to me wishing you a Merry Christmas on the grounds of political correctness, take this token, it's good for one screening of the new smash hit film "Go Fuck Yourself". If you object for more philosophical reasons, please, I mean no offence other than to wish you a period of prosperity and happiness, and your disapproval of my general wellwishing is noted.

In other news I've decided that most of the stuff that's going to appear on my dA account in future will be photography. This is because a) Most of my design work is done for clients and it would be unethical for me to offer it for free and under my own copyright on this page, and b) I upgraded from my old Sony DSC-P72 3.2mp camera to the fantastic, sexy, and all-in-all orgasmic Olympus E-500 Digital SLR (8.0 mp - now featured in my avatar!). How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

Mood: Hopelessly in Love.
Mood 2: Loved, hopelessly.

Here's a story I wrote for no particular reason. It alludes to no thruths about myself nor anyone. It's fiction.

Untitled

By James Ducker

Dedicated to Andrew, 'cos if you weren't away from MSN i would never have written this!

"Hey."

he said, weary of the illness that had overcome him.

His skies were darkest on glorious summer days, memories of times gone by spent basking in the sun embittered by his wretched shortcomings.

"James" a voice whispered from afar.

Ahh that voice, sweet as honey, soft as a cloud, yet always clear and crisp

"James!" the voice repeated

I awoke to find myself in a room, lifetimes away from those sunny daffidol spotted meadows

Bed, drip, and her

she was here

Why I did not know. Memories of vicious arguments and threats came flooding back

what fool would ever do what I had done to her. The dunce, the joker, the petty theif. These were my only kin now

Yet she was there

"Why?" My voice was weak and raspy, yet the word- that word uttered so often by so many, sprang forth thriumphantly.

She looked down upon me

I could feel the warmth of her body radiating through the bed sheets. She was sitting now.

"James," she began "I love you, and it will take more than an argument to change that."

A glimmer of light found it's way to my eyes. Surely she would see the sparkle and know that I loved her too.

As defeated as I may be, her love gave me strength enough to sit up. My eyes to hers, we began to converse. Slowly. For that was all my shaken mind could handle for now. Soon the time would come for retribution, but until that time comes it is said that nothing could ever break your heart

Like a warrior fallen in battle, I felt the last few rays of irridescent light strike my body. The light soon faded.

I awoke some time later to an empty room. She was gone. My heart began its long plunge into infinite darkness, but was caught by that soft hand that had run its fingers through my hair countless times.

A note was placed next to my bed.

With my strength steadily increasing I was able to take it from it's resting spot and pry it open.

"Mr. Ducker, I write you to inform you that we are in possession of your greatest treasure. We will contact you shortly, but until that time it would be unwise to contact anyone regarding this matter.

Sincerely,
T."

The time for retribution had come.

fin.
(fin is cliche but film noirish, innit)

--------------------------------------------------------------

Well enough of that, back to my life. Yeah so well Semester II of uni has started, sweet timetable: Thursday and Friday off! Mainly because I failed maths *is both happy and annoyed but more happy*

And uhh, still with my girlfriend that's almost 7 months now, and still going strong, even though sometimes I'm a dick and don't stop playing computer games when she calls! She's so understanding, sigh. . .

Uhh, other than that, been good, got a bit of a cold. And am building a hot new computer so games and photoshop finally don't laaaaaaag!

Anyway, here I am, back again.

Well, I haven't posted anything lately (got some nice landscape photos coming up though - read on for details) as I've been busy what with Uni starting. I'm doing a Bachelor of Industrial Design @ UNSW (www.unsw.edu.au), which involves a lot of constructing things like wooden yo-yos and hammers (wood and metal modules for workshop safety course), engineering drawings (I <3 this course - Design/Communication), COMPUTER BASICS (hahahaha we all know who is going to top this course of 130 students ...ME!), and thats about it I think. Also joined the PIRATE SOCIETY, the ULTIMATE FRISBEE CLUB, AIESOC (Australian International Student Exchange or some such thing) and the ROWING CLUB (NB: Joined AIESOC and Rowing Club for the free beer. I stopped rowing when I was 15 and I intend to keep it that way. Student exchange? Maybe.
Well anyway I might put said photos online now. Until next time this is James "McJ" Ducker signing off - catch me on STUDIOJ RADIO Fridays from 8-10pm AEST (GMT +1100 (+1000 when DST ends) ).

well been a while hey!
Updates of my life:
1. I got a new printer after my 9 year old HP finally died (RIP, I still love you)
so I bought a cool new Canon and it prints CDs and Photos and was well worth the $200 i spent on it, except that you can only DirectPrint from Canon DSCs (the BASTARDS!)

2. I got accepted into a B Industrial Design at the University of New South Wales (OMGOMGOMOGMOMG) which is good, and whats more I got a HECS place (for those of you outside Austrialia/NSW HECS = Government pays something like 80% of your fees and the rest you pay back out of your taxable income when you get a job). I start Uni on February 28, so this time next year I may well be submitting lots of stuff I've made, but I promise not to abandon my Graphic Design roots, I love it too much

3. I might still go to Design School after Uni, cos I don't want to give up on Graphic Design, and I think Industrial and Graphic Design would go together well

4. New girlfriend, Georgia: very sweet, very perfect, very...*sigh* just perfect. Maybe I'll post a snap of us here if she lets me

5. I'm thinking of buying an 8MP DSC - any photographers out there, give me your recommendations! I might go for less than 8, but the lower cameras tend not to have such advanced image adjustment and capture technology (sigh, I still like my SLR the best, good old pentax, never let me down!!)

6. hmm what else....I finally made a new flash intro for my website, it features music by the Strokes and the music from the Apple "Switch" commercials. See it here

Well that's it from me, I'll let you know how things are after I start uni, not that you care anyway

Well, it's all over. 13 years of school, and it all ended on a warm spring day, not a cloud in the sky, with the year 12s standing in their groups signing each others' shirts, the warm sunlight dappled by the broad-leafed trees of upper playground, Sydney Grammar School, on Tuesday October 12, 2004. This is where it ends. So what now? Well, I have my final exams from October 18 to November 11, then I'm going to Byron Bay (look it up on a map of Australia if you don't know where it is...it's in northern New South Wales, a few hundred km south of the tropics, absolutely amazing sun, surf, etc) for Schoolies week from December 5-12, then I don't know...I'll bum around a bit...might go on a road trip (yay! I can finally see ~blatant-narcissist and all my other South Australian friends!!).
So..2005. Well In march (with a bit of luck) I'll be at the University of New South Wales' O-Week, and for the next four years studying for a Bachelor of Design degree....should be great! Wish me luck everyone, I need to do well in the final exams to get in, but at this rate, I should scrape through! -xoxo James

Ok, so today was day 1 of rifle camp...this will need some explaining.
1. I shoot .308 rifles for my school's team
2. No, I'm not American, so I'm not likely to shoot anyone by accident.
3. There has never been a casualty on an Australian Rifle Range
4. I shoot 300m, 500m, 600m, 800m. No, I don't use a scope, just line up the black dot in the middle of the circle.
5. I have gained preselection for the 1st rifle squad (i.e. top squad)
6. Unlike other school sports where you verse a different team each weekend, shooting consists purely of training which surmounts to the GPS tournament held next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (yay I miss 2 days of school!)
7. Rifle camp goes from today (Monday) until Saturday, from 0830-1630 each day.
8. I found my yo-yo from 5th grade! ...oh wait, that's irrelevant...
9. It's an easy sport, once you get your shooting position right...
10. blah blah blah blah blah mindless crap etc etc etc

Ok, so, day 1 (this is the third rifle camp I've been to in 3 years). I spent the morning marking targets (someone shoots, you pull them down into the little bunker you sit in, put a merker through the hole, push it back up, call the score with a big lollipop thing). BORING! Tomorrow I'm bringing a boombox! So, I missed out on shooting at 300m. Then we weren't allowed to drive to the Malabar Bakery for lunch I missed out on lunch as a result. In the afternoon I shot 45/50 with one bullseye. I might post some photos tomorrow.... Anyway...Mr. Mason (head of shooting) didn't like our laid-back inefficiency, so I found myself running 600m to the 800m range flagpole and back, along with the other shooters (DAMNIT I HAD JUST GOT THE PERFECT POSITION FOR SHOOTING WHEN HE SAID THAT & %#$@%$^$#!!!!!!$%^$#!#&*$^#%@!$%^*&amp
SO! That happened twice, then at 4.30pm myself and 2 friends went and had Oporto burgers (yummy) for lunch/dinner, and I went home.
