The Italian artist Mefitica has a playful and fluid sense of line that I find very appealing.  Her technique reminds me of Audrey Kawasaki but her character and style is all her own. Meftica's work is most compelling when her figures are simplified  to their geometric essence. This gives them a very intensional, designed feeling, almost like they are icons. In her best pieces there lives a sense of delicate confidence.

Within the vast oceanic depths of anime art on deviantart, Yokko caught my eye. Just look at her compositions, amazing use of lush color and well designed shape making and I think you'll see why. Add to this unusual perspectives and incredible draughtmanship and you have someone you should be watching. Her compositions are complex and busy but through use of contrasting colors and value (that is, lights and darks) she manages to keep them from being disorienting or feeling messy- truly impressive.

I'm definitely inspired by her work. Check it out:

I feel a strange intimate connection with everyone I draw, even though you don't know who I am and vise versa. I wish I could explain it.

What if I did each portrait on individual 3x3 or 4x4 square panels? Once finished I would scan them all and make a digital collage for the 'final'. The reasons I am considering this method:
1. Each person painted would have the opportunity to buy their own original painting. (If they wanted)
2. I wouldn't have to preplan the entire piece and a capped number of participants; I could continue to accept more people over time.
3. It would be easier to track who is who.

I would like to set a goal of 900 people participating. If I reserving a 2 x 2 inch space for each face the painting dimensions would be 6 feet by 4 feet and 2 inches See the mock up below:

My plan would be to average 10 faces a day- that would be 3 months of painting. So I just got back from a whirl-wind surprise trip to LA where I auditioned for a the upcoming Bravo reality show for artists. Nope didn't make it. As I suspected they were looking for 'high brow' art, like nailing yourself to a wall or something. Representational art was dismissed almost at once. But the trip wasn't a waste.

Besides getting to visit my brother and his family, I am now in this weird state where I am thinking about my art, what I am doing with my life and where I will be in 20 years. I think that we are in a general long sweeping trend away from art that is non-representational to art based more in the natural, or at least, human experience. Perhaps this in part caused my modern communication technology; creating some kind of global, populist art movement? DeviantArt is a good example of that.
