In preparation for this year's NEE costume [link] I had a friend help me re-fit a bodice mock-up for an 18th century Robe à l'Anglaise. She took in the side seams a bit, left the two back pieces as they were, and re-shaped the center front. All in all, easy enough.

Then I got this bright idea to re-do the bodice for the ever-frustrating red and gold anglaise - [link]

First, I sewed the shoulder straps on backwards. Then, the armholes were way too small, and I couldn't move my arms in it. I cut about an inch off the armholes, sewed the sleeves back on, and... still too small. Not. Fair.

The cotton in the mock-up stretches, the acetate brocade does not. I'm trying to get the kinks out of this pattern before my emerald green silk arrives for my Seven Deadly Sins costume.

On a positive note, we did shorten the strap on the front piece so that the horrible gaping problem is no longer an issue. We'll see if I can defeat this damned red and gold acetate.

Also, the tendinitis in my hands has been misbehaving, so projecting has not been really happening since early April.

In the last few months, I posted shots of my mom's 1797 white muslin dress that she wore to the Siege of San Juan event in Puerto Rico. I think for next year it will need a more ostentatious sash, and perhaps a hat that looks like a pastry. I was also thinking something fancier in striped gold, olive, cream, and rust colored silk. (trust me)

Future projects may include:

- The Machine: A steampunk creation that scans people for diseases, potency of soul, and temporal displacement. It's for use at the CT Renaissance Faire as part of our comedic steampunk troupe of time traveling Victorian weirdos. More on this later.

- Steampunk Ensemble - made from a brown and gold sari, natural form-ish

- (possibly, if I have time before the croquet party this year) - A red taffeta late bustle era bodice to match the skirt showed with my red Chinese brocade bustle gown, and the "Indian Fire" dress.

- A fancy black obi for the kimono

- A dangerous looking Asian-esque hair piece for Legend of the Five Rings

- Next year's Northeast Event costume which will be a portrayal of the deadly sin "Pride". I'm going back and forth between a green and gold sari as the base, or the green silk robe a l'anglaise that I've always wanted, and will use again for the regimental Christmas party with different accessories. Thoughts?

I start student teaching on Monday, and I have to say I'm nervous. I'm terrified. Urban 8th graders all day every day for the next ten weeks. I have so much to read up on before I get thrown to the wolves. Needless to say, progress on projects have been slow. I've been working on more 1880s clothing than anything else.

I made an 1880s overskirt our of this gorgeous skull brocade, and I was working on a matching jacket. I have been having a hell of a time with TV 463 - [link] I can never get the damned neckline or bustline to fit right. I've attempted this pattern twice now. The mock-up fit, but when I cut it out the fabric, it was way too small. Also, trying to figure out how to line box pleats is beyond my skill. If anyone has any advice on how to do that, I'm all ears!

The next projects on the list include:

A re-working of the red brocade polonaise. The bodice never fit right, and I'll be wearing it to an event in February, so I figured I'd give that a shot.

Possibly, maybe, hopefully - a new pair of stays.

I've done a fabulous bustle from the Laughing Moon pattern in a purple celestial quilting cotton, a victorian jacket and overskirt in black skull patterned brocade, and a handful of other things too. Hopefully this week, I can get a few things photographed and up for your viewing pleasure.

In the works are:

- a revision of the 18th century anglaise in red brocade. The bodice needs to be re-fitted, and the seams finished.
- two 18th century waistcoats

School started last week, so that's eating my soul and taking time away from sewing.

I've done a few commissions in the last few months that I intend to have pictures of after this weekend's event.

I also have a normal people non-period-costume dress that I need to finish before this weekend to wear to a friend's wedding. (They didn't have anything acceptable in the store.) I had some serious fitting issues, but I think it's close enough now. The pattern was Vogue 1944.

I will soon (hopefully) have pictures of:

- two twill elizabethan doublets
- a red elizabethan doublet bodice over-dress
- a kilt
- an itallian shift
- a fantasy elizabethan-inspired black twill doublet bodice surcoat
- a red brocade elizbethan doublet
- an olive green chinese brocade sheath dress

I have been checking Joann's for velvet for weeks. The only color they have is green, which doesn't help me at all. So instead of shelling out full price for the fabric I want at Osgood's, I decided to go with a gorgeous red Chinese brocade with black cherry blossoms for the 1880s bustle gown. I'll have to snap a few pictures as soon as there something to snap pictures of.

I cut it out yesterday, and started piecing it together. As I was putting the vest piece on for the TV463 - [link] - I got frustrated because it didn't seem to fit in right, but the pieces on the mock-up fit just fine. WTF, right?

When I finally figured it out, I felt like an idiot. On the mock, I ran out of fabric, so one of the pieces was a little misshapen. I used the mishapen piece as the pattern to cut out the good fabric... Thankfully I had enough to just re-cut the piece, and now things are going rather well.

Now I just need a decent overbust corset. Preferably one I don't have to make.

Two snow days and February vacation means I have had a bit of time on my hands, but it also means I'm not getting paid.

Anyway...

I have gotten considerable work done on the bustle. It looks a hundred times better with the ruffled overlay hiding the clunky looking wires. I need to buy more black cotton, as I did not anticipate having to make a second mock up for the bodice. I have plans to acquire this stuff on Wednesday, and I should finish the sucker this weekend.

Then there is the bodice. I'm going back and forth trying to decide to make the entire thing out of black velvet, or do the "vest" part of it in a different fabric, like this uber goth skull brocade I ordered from ebay.

I had meant this outfit to be worn for a sluagh character that I mean to play in the New Dream [link] - but it would be convenient to be able to wear it for my Ventrue too... and the Ventrue wouldn't be as into the skull brocade as the Sluagh.

Thoughts? Should I go goth for words, or should I keep it subdued?

A work finally in progress. I have a few pictures of the mock-up in my scraps. I'm pretty sure I'll have to re-cut the thing, as it is slightly too small, and too short.

I also started work on an 1880s bustle, but this will be on hold until i am no longer frustrated with it. It was far more complicated than anticipated. I think I may just stick with a bustle pad for this project. Much less of a headache than a cage bustle.

I just 90% finished a red linen 18th century shortgown for my size 2 mother. I happened to have a spare 3/4 of a yard of the stuff leftover from a petticoat for a coworker last summer, and got bored. My mom is tiny, so I was able to squeeze out a (very) short gown for her. Finishing all the seams by hand was only slightly less obnoxious then trying line it. I think when I get around to makin gmy pale green silk saque gown I'll just do hand seam finishing instead of trying to fight with a lining.

Amazingly enough, the jacket mostly fit. Not bad for dead reckoning. The only thing is that she must be stayed to wear it, or I have to put eyelets in it and dig up a stomacher.

I'll post a few pictures tonight if I get around to it.

My next projects may be any of the following, depending on the money situation:

- Heavy black wool cloak
- 18th century pocket hoops
- dark green wool 18th century shortgown and petticoat
- white linen 18th century shift(s)
- olive/sage green or dark brown linen 18th century robe a l'anglaise
- 1870s bustle
- black velvet 1870s basque
- black velvet etc. 1875 skirt
