Stole this from =Sekai-Okami

Your name?
John Slaughter, Jr.

Your age?
32

When did you start drawing?
Really, around 11ish... That's when I really started taking it seriously.

Which hand do you use for drawing?
Right

Which is easier to draw - male or female?
I think men are easier. You can chisel out a guy and make it believable, but if you don't get female curves right people can tell.

Which is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Short hair. You can do more with it, it adds style. Long hair starts out ok, but then just kinda looks blah at the end.

Is it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
What an interesting question. I've never thought about it. Probably easier to the right. I just don't know though.

Is it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?
Profiles (side view) are always easier. Especially if you are drawing a recognizable (real) person.

What do you have problems drawing?
Backgrounds and scenery.

What do you like to draw?
Honestly? Girls. Really sexy girls usually.

Are you a traditional artist or a digital artist?
Both. Most illustrations start out traditional pencils, then get inked and colored digitally.

Where do you start drawing from?
Whole figure, but my detailing and clean-up starts at the face.

What is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
Habit? Well, I don't draw anything particular too much. In fact, I'd say my only habit is procrastination. I rarely finish what I start.

Any tips for coloring/shading?
Pay attention to where the light is coming from. Lay down your flats and work out your highlights and shadows as realistically as possible - it makes the atmosphere more believable.

How long does it take to finish a piece of art?
Rush: 10 hours. Average: weeks.

What music do you listen to while you draw?
Japanese pop/rock or instrumentals. If I can follow the lyrics I get distracted. If I can't, it's just rhythm to keep me going.

How long does it take you to come up with an idea?
Ages... Got any?

Your favorite drawing utensils?
Standard graphite for roughs. Red and non-repo blue .7mm mechanical pencils for penciling/details. And my Cintiq tablet for ink/colors.

Your favorite color/the color that you use a lot?
Blue. Everything in my world is apparently a grey/blue shade.

Your favorite style(s)?
Early 90's comic, or modern Anime style. Or a hybrid of the two.

What kind of artist are you aiming for?
None, I try and draw when I want to, and what I want to. Not aiming to be anything. I don't have a lot of free time to draw these days anyway.

-John

So starting this weekend, and continuing to next weekend, John is on vacation!

I plan to put myself through hell and back in completing:

- My Cocoa / Objective-C books, videos, and tutorials. I'm going to Apple's Developer Conference again this summer and I want to brush up before I go again. Last year some of it went over my head. Not this year. I'm going to build several tutorial apps for the Mac, as well as my iPhone.

- Going to finish our case tracking website at work. Lots of little things that need to be cleaned up. Once I had finished it they made a list of other things they want me to add. So, back into PHP I go as well. I wanted to just stick to Objective-C, but the good news is that PHP is essentially C, and Objective-C is just a superset of ANSI C, and PHP version 5 adds a lot to make it object-oriented like Objective-C is, so... I shouldn't have too much trouble weaving between the two. I can't just do one thing, ever, because I'm too ADD for that. I need at least two or three things going on to bounce between to keep myself happy.

Drawing? Probably not so much. Unfortunately. However, I may break the camera out though. Should be a lovely week. I'd hate to be inside the whole time.

I made two goals for myself this year (before death-fest 2009 began.)

Professional goals:
I'm really (no really) learning Cocoa programming. I'm blocking out time twice a week while at work to read books, watch video lessons, and tinker with code. Lock myself in my office and turn off email. It's the only way I'm ever going to get somewhere. I've been buying screencasts from Pragmatic Programmers and a host of PDFs and books. Looks like I'm going to Apple's WWDC again this year too, so I want to be better prepared and more familar with the language and APIs.

Personal Goals:
On a personal level I've decided that I'm no longer an oil painter. I just don't have the time, and the risk of having toxic metals suspended in linseed oil around my kids isn't appealing enough to keep it up. I still like to draw, I still like to illustrate. But the painting is done.

With that said, I'm also trying to block out time to finish learning 3D modeling. I have both LightWave and Modo available to me from work and I'm acceptably mediocre at both. I do it casually for work, but it's time to take it seriously. If my job ever tanks... there are plenty of opportunities for a good 3D animator. I'll be adding some stuff to my gallery soon I hope. I'm a perfectionist, so this could take some time. But it will be worth it.

Andy Brown has some great modo tutorials at the Luxology site. I've bought several lessons already. Modo makes 3D modeling like working with clay. It's wonderful.

On a photography note - I found several praying mantis egg sacs on a bush in my back yard. Going to adopt them and photograph their hatching with my macro. (Then release them properly) I've been told they are very small when born. Can't wait to see.

Death. No, not my own, but other's. As if loosing a good friend on Christmas eve wasn't bad enough. My grandma died a week or so ago, somewhat suddenly. I mean, you usually don't act too surprised when someone dies at 71, but when they seem perfectly fine one moment and suddenly not expected to make it another 24 hours it hits you pretty hard. She shouldn't have died so soon. It was hard explaining to my kids what happened. They kept wanting to go to the hospital and see her again. They were convinced she was still there somewhere.

We were sitting at the funeral and my 5 year old is sitting on my lap. They played this cheap video where they inserted all these pictures of my grandma with other people. It was very cheap, I could have done a better job in my sleep, but the point is that when it finished after 5-6 minutes, Corrin says loudly in a room full of people crying "That was short!" and we all laughed. She was on to something though, life usually does seem short.

I'm almost done with physical therapy for my knee. I've decided to start going to the gym here on campus since I'm already used to doing the strength training twice a week anyway. So I'm going to try and transition that and keep up the habit.

Work is getting better. I haven't had the time to notice, but it is improving around here. Lots to do, but it doesn't feel so overwhelming anymore. Maybe it's just my attitude though.

I sure hope so.

As if I didn't already have enough camera gear, I did it again.

I got my W-2 from work and found that while my tax refund won't be as nice as it has been in the past, it's enough to splurge a little on things I need for my art. So the AmEx card was called upon to help me pre-spend the refund.

My Canon 180mm 3.5 L Macro Lens is fantastic. But still, there are times it just doesn't get as close as I'd like it to. So I decided to pick up the Canon Extender 2X EF II, which doubles the zoom ratio on that lens to 2/1. 360mm total. It's difficult to hand-hold (at all) when you're aiming at a spot roughly the size of a centimeter, but it returns excellent shots on a tripod. I can't wait for spring now, with all of the plant life and bugs to shoot. I think I just peed my pants... wait, no, I'm alright.

Ladybugs, wolf spiders, ants, whatever.
What the hell... So I did actually sell my laptop. They buyer has had it now for almost a week now and loves it. And I still haven't been paid. PayPal has started a new policy where on a whim, without any prior notification, some items (not all) are flagged and your funds are held. This is for your protection as well as for the buyers. Ugh. Great.

Once upon a time (some 7-8 years ago) I switched to PayPal because it was a lot quicker to get money from auctions compared to using Money Orders, therefore making it a lot quicker to ship items to customers. It was good for me, it was good for the buyers, it was a good deal.

Now, with PayPal's new policy it takes me 2 weeks average to get paid. 2-3 times longer than it used to take with Money Orders. My incentive is gone, and so is PayPal. Never mind that my reputation for delivering great quality items speaks for itself (100% great feedback.) I simply cannot deal with PayPal's "sometimes we just decide to hold your money, and you won't know if we will until after we already have" policy. Yes, I hear it's great for protecting me from fraud and chargebacks, well, so do Money Orders. And it's lightning fast compared to the new system.

I know, you can refund the buyer a penny and the system will release the hold (strong rumor, but not tested), but I'm not about to go messing with a beast that can also on a whim, lock my account for "suspicious activity" and then hold my money for up to 180 days. No, I'm going to hurt them where it counts. No more making fees and interest off of my transactions.

So, I paid my car payment with my house payment money. I can't pay my house payment now, but hopefully my tax refund will be in my bank account in 5-7 days. Funny, the government will get my money to me faster than PayPal will.

Update:

I think it's time to return to dA. Time to get back into drawing again. I've been away dealing with a lot, and now things are starting to relax. My web site for work is still getting the bugs worked out of it, but that's not too overwhelming right now. I'm also going macro photography crazy too. Once I can walk better I'll start posting more photos as well.

My knee is getting better. On Dec 11th I fell on the ice and moved my kneecap about 90 degrees to the side of my leg. I can walk now, albeit still very stiff, and I can't straighten or bend the knee very far. Getting better. The Physical Therapy really helps.

I need money!!! ZOMG that's not even funny. The therapy visits are $20 co-pay each visit, twice a week. I'm bleeding money here. I'm thinking about selling my 15" MacBook Pro. It's about 2 years old now, it's a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of RAM (supports 3GB) and a 160GB HD. It's been very babied by me. If you are interested, or know anyone, let me know. Otherwise it's going to eBay soon. I'd like $1000 for it, but I think I'd settle for as low as $800 if I get desperate. I need money that bad. The house payment is due and I'm a couple hundred shy, and we need groceries. Ugh. Seems to be a universal story though. A lot of people are up to their neck financially from what I keep hearing.

I've worked out the synopsis for my Inuyasha Fan Comic. It's 9 chapters long, with each chapter between 8-12 comic pages. I'm working out the panels now, so I'm not sure what page count I'll settle on in the end. It will take forever to finish, especially if I do all the pencils, ink, and color. But it will be rewarding in the end. I've always wanted to do something like this.

Still learning 3D. With the web project at work I had to put that on hold, but I'm still plucking at it. That's not a pressing project, and I think I'd rather be at my desk with a pencil in my hand right now anyway.

So, whatcha been doin'? Haven't seen ya around much lately?

Well, you see, I've been designing web sites for work, things that need to be finished by the 5th of January, so I don't have a whole lot of time left to finish them up.

I also mentioned that I was working on some Mega Man stuff, which started as fan art and has grown into a beast of it's own. One of the things I need to do for my job is tune up my 3D modeling skills (with no particular rush though) so I've decided to model a few of the Mega Man characters in modo (a 3D modeling app) in an effort to get better at using the app. There are a lot of videos that come with modo, and many more you can buy that help in teaching all of the tools and help you become a master at using them. The only trouble is I can't bring myself to do anything half-assed, so I'm going all out on detailing these in jaw-dropping realism or they aren't worth doing at all. So me and my graph paper have been trying to bring various Mega-bosses into real world dimensions for a render which I hope to combine live filming with 3D integration, kind of like the live-action Transformers movie, except hopefully my end result won't suck that much.

So, that's where I stand. Have a great holiday season. I'll be around from time to time, since I can't focus on one thing very long and need distractions to break up my ADD itch.

I squeezed blood from a turnip* and went ahead and bought a twin flash for my Canon 180mm Macro Lens. I've been very pleased with my Macro overall, I better be since it's an L Series lens and cost $1200 of my hard-earned tax refund, but have been very unhappy with the lighting conditions I often shoot under.

You see, I shoot small. Very small, and when you shoot that small you get a very shallow depth-of-field. (The bug's head might be in focus, but the antennae in front and body behind it are both out of focus.) It's hard to get a good shot at all if the lighting is not just right. I can't use a normal camera-mounted speed-light flash, because the lens is so large it gets in the way of the light, and while my studio strobes and umbrellas work great with the macro, they aren't exactly mobile.

Because of this people invented ring flashes which mount right on the end of the macro lens and light the small subject the lens is focused on. The only trouble with those is that the flash is largely omnidirectional and cancels out many or all of the shadows leaving the subject without much volume. The trick to good lighting is the shadows that it creates.

then there is the Twin Flash. [link] This wonderful toy also mounts on the end of the lens getting right up there where you need it most, but it's two lights that are fully adjustable around the ring, or even removable if needed. I can make one brighter than the other to create better shadow conditions, and it's small enough to travel with me wherever.

It arrives Friday, and I expect that even with my sore knee I'll find some tiny things to shoot and try it out.

*We had hot dogs and macaroni and cheese for dinner.

Can I be honest? I absolutely hate online Manga that is toned in grayscale. It looks like crap. I came to this realization when I became a subscriber at WirePop [link] and of course the color comics like Realms of Ishikaze by Dan Hess [link] are beautifully rendered in color for an audience reading them on monitors capable of beautiful color range. Then you have many other people making comics on color computers, yet going out of their way to tone and shade everything in print-friendly black dots. It's not like these comics will never see the printing press, ever. I mean, even the few success stories like *svetlania's Dramacon [link] are impossible to replicate since companies like TokyoPop are going under as people find more and more webcomics online. (And I'll even admit that I loved Svet's black and white "NightSilver" because her art style outweighed my gripe about the tones.) Still, printing black and white books is quickly becoming extinct.

So anymore I don't even bother reading comics online that aren't in color. The 90's are over, gimme some beautiful 24-bit color and I'm a happy guy!

I slipped on an ice patch while scraping off my car (All you folks in southern states feel free to brag) and relocated my kneecap to the right side of my leg. It was about as painful as you'd imagine it was, and I laid there in the icy road while my neighbor ran to tell Nicole who called 911. While they were moving me the kneecap popped back into place and they cut up one of my nicer pair of slacks getting at my knee in the ambulance.

The X-Rays came back good, well, no bone damage as it were, but the muscle and soft tissue began to swell and throb. I'm immobilized for a few days until the swelling goes down and then on crutches for a while. My knee is the size of a softball. Ugh. On top of the fact that my ER co-pay went up to $120. When I gave the lady my debit card I told her it hurt more than my knee did.

So, I'm couch-bound. And if you know anything about muscle sprains then you know it's a low, dull pain all the time if you don't move it, and a sharp pain if you do. I'm screwed and immobilized.

So... I'm taking the time to work on a web site I needed to finish anyway. And maybe some art stuff once I can sit comfortably.

-John

I've been tablet crazy lately. It started out as a means to improve the commercial quality of my art with things like this:

But then I got caught up in trying to pencil on the tablet, and I really tried, but I've come to realize that I just can't do it. It's a tool issue. It's just the wrong tool for the job for me.

The tablet is great for an illustrating finish. It allows me to line and color with amazing precision and I've definitely improved my technique. But it doesn't work for me as a penciling tool. I can't "rough" with a tablet so I just kept coloring other people's pencils like so:

And those were a lot of fun, but I keep failing to get any of my own art off the ground. So I'm going back to basics. I bought a small set of graphite pencils, a couple pads of Strathmore, and an angled desktop drawing board to get back into pencils. I hope to merge the technique of penciling, scanning, and digitally finishing in the long run; but for now I'm going to spend some good quality time with my pencils.

I'm going back to this sort of thing for a while:

We'll see if I can find my groove in graphite.

There is a field of work where girls who didn't go to college get to prance around in skimpy outfits and have their pictures taken for magazines or advertisements.[1] They get paid for this, as do the set designers, make-up artists, and photographers. It's all paid for by an ad agency or corporate sponsor. It's kind of a neat gig if you can get in, but it's a bit overpopulated so don't get your hopes up.

Then there's the self-supported model. These are the girls[2] that usually meet up with photographers and shoot for experience. It's hard to get paid because both the photographer and the model are usually paid for by the sponsor, but in these cases since there is no product, no advertisement, and no sponsor - Therefore no pay. It's fun. This is where I'm at as a photographer.

But lately there has been an ever-increasing group of models with their own web sites. Not the promotional/portfolio type of web sites, I expect that, these are the hey-you-wanna-give-me-your-credit-card-to-see-my-pictures kind of web sites. There's another industry that uses this method, it's called the porn industry. But these girls swear it's not that. It's just that "models work hard and should get paid." Well hey, I agree lady, but by whom? Should people simply passing by shell out cash just to see you model a bathing suit? The viewer has NEVER been expected to pay for modeling. (Well, not directly. You can argue the sponsor sells the product to the consumer who is the target audience for the model, but still. I don't give a chick a dollar[3] cause she's hot while I'm standing in line for a morning donut. I just look at her for free, right?)

So my ponder is this: Can a model pay site really support itself without going porn? How "slightly erotic" are these models willing to go before they swallow man-sauce to draw in more subscriptions? I'm obsessive about accurate color on a monitor.

SO.... you can imagine how pee'd off I might be at the fact that my stupid Cintiq WON'T color calibrate right!!!!! ARGH>>> I frequently color something that looks fantastic on the Cintiq, then I post it on DA and look at it on ANY other machine and it looks awful. The last piece I posted is WAY too yellow and oversaturated. The one before that was too yellow-green where the browns were supposed to be. I corrected some of it on this machine, but I'm getting damn pissed that I can't get it to work right. the whole point of buying a hardware calibrator is to make it stupid-easy to get consistency across many screens. Not a tablet LCD apparently, the one true artists tool in the whole pile of my crap.

Ugh... I guess I could try it again. Or just manually adjust it until it looks visually close enough. Anything is better than what I'm getting.

I have a few things still on my plate that need to get cleared up but I expect to get them under control by the end of the week. I got's plans after that. I'm going to spend some time drawing. Not a lot of color, not a lot of line-art, but just old fashion pencil and paper. Maybe even some rough figure drawing too. We'll see.

I'm getting out of practice. We can't have that.

Going to eventually pick up a Bluetooth Wacom for my laptop (if my boss won't buy it first) and get into the habit of mobile work too.
This is an expanded entry based on a deviation comment.

=Mako-fufu had an image removed from her gallery because the character (an original character) was ... well, I'll let you read it yourself:

"Upon review a member of staff determined that the characters depicted in a nude or erotic fashion in this deviation are established as being underage. Removed as violation of policy."

And the DA mods wonder why most people around here don't think very highly of them. Now, the image is somewhat risqué with the frilly panties and whatnot, sure, but as an original character that is so stylized that aliens probably wouldn't think it represented a human at all, who has the right to come along and label it as kiddie porn on a whim?

This is stupid.

Let's put this into perspective. The whole point of prohibiting underage persons in photography is to prevent the exploitation of minors. (As the US legal system believes that minors to not posses the experience or judgement to understand the long-term consequences of their actions.) That makes perfect sense. However, THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO DRAWINGS!!! You cannot exploit a character in a drawing. You can't even pretend to without leaning a little delusional. It's not real.

With that said I understand that drawings that depict the exploitation of minors violates DA policy, and this site justifiably has that right to limit it's subject matter on such a sensitive issue, but deciding wether a very stylized drawing depicts an underage minor is about as subjective as wether or not Norman Rockwell was an artist or an illustrator. Aside from images clearly representing children (RE: infants, pre-teens) where it's obvious, the decision of wether a very stylized image depicts a minor falls entirely within the mind of the original artist. Everything else is subjective opinion. If Disney wants to say that Kim Possible is a minor, and DA chooses to endorse that, fine. I agree with that wholeheartedly as Disney owns the character and they state there is no question that she's a minor. But for the admins to take that judgement into their own hands for original characters without consulting the creator of the character in question is out of line and offensive to all freedoms an artist possesses. Who the hell do you think you are? How do you justify that action based on personal whim?

Policies that mirror the law are admirable. This, however, is nothing more than ignorant censorship.

My car broke. Then it broke again.

First I cracked the Thermostat housing, which is still leaking a bit. I just keep putting water in it until I can find a new one. Car places don't seem to carry them for my car.

Then I lost a brake pad yesterday on the way home. Not as bad as it sounds, but it does cause what's left of the pad to scrape and dig into the rotor. So now I have to replace the pads and rotors then bleed the brake lines. Ugh, fun eh?

So this morning, in the mean time, I rode my bike to work in 90 degree weather and high humidity. About 40 minutes of miserable biking. Add to that both tires were low and all I had was 50 cents, but air at 7 Eleven costs 75 cents. (Yes, a few seconds of air costs 75 cents) So I rode on low tires about 15 minutes until I came upon a Marathon station where it was only 50 cents and filled up my tires.

Add to this that 10 minutes into the trip my seat came loose and kept taking cheap shots at crushing my nut sack. Thank God I was quicker than the seat was, or else I'd have really had a bad day. Right after I passed the Marathon station I stopped at a Walgreens and picked up some pliers to tighten the seat so it wouldn't tilt anymore. The twins are very thankful.

And now I'm relaxing in air conditioning at work. What's that? You want me to go across frickin campus for somehting? ...
One of my favorite comedians, and philosophers, has died. George Carlin was one of those querky, but very observant people who was often misunderstood, but never really gave a shit about it.

- "Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck."

- "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

- "Guys who fly around the world in a fuckin' balloon. What is this, 1850? Get a fuckin' airline ticket, would you please? And when are the media going to realize that people are not interested in some rich trouser stain who's so bored he's got to fly around in a balloon all day? I hope the next guy gets hit by lightning! And flies around in little fart circles: Fffffffffffffffbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb! And lands in a sewage treatment pond. And sinks with the rest of the turds! "

I spent my teenage years watching his many HBO specials. Learning to see past the rants and obscenities, while understanding that there was a point to it. If you were offended, you were taking life too seriously.

- "I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

- "If someone with multiple personalities threatens to kill himself, is it considered a hostage situation?"

- "Weather forecast for tonight: dark. Continued dark turning into partly-light in the morning."

I have never taken an airline flight and NOT thought of Carlin as they go into the Safety Lecture" and teaching me how to use a seat belt buckle.

- "As soon as they close the door to the aircraft, that's when they begin the Safety Lecture. I love the safety lecture! This is my favorite part of the airplane ride! I listen very carefully to the safety lecture, especially that part where they teach us how to use the seatbelts! Imagine this: here we are, a plane full of grown human beings... many of us partially educated, and they're actually taking time out to describe the intricate workings of a belt buckle! "

- "By and large, language is a tool for concealing the truth"

- "When someone is impatient and says, "I haven't got all day," I always wonder, How can that be? How can you not have all day?"

- "What's all this stuff about motivation? I say, if you need motivation, you probably need more than motivation. You probably need chemical intervention or brain surgery. Actually, if you ask me, this country could do with a little less motivation. The people who are causing all the trouble seem highly motivated to me. "

I am going to miss you George. You were a friend to us all. Take care.

I've found that inking at original resolution is actually easier that increasing the DPI first. I'm not sure why that is, but I used to convert people's pencils to 300DPI first, but the inking process allows for a lot more mess-ups at that resolution, and I just shrink it back down to 72 for web anyway. So I tried a few at 200DPI, and most recently just drew at web resolution and I thought it looked ok, but not good enough. Perhaps I'll try one at 150DPI.
I bought a PS3 a while back at Kmart. It was $499 for the 80GB (PS2 compatible version) with MotorStorm and for a while it was fun. I love MotorStorm and will probably get the sequel. But aside from being a nice Blu-ray player, the PS3 bores me with game selection. I don't like shooters, or sports games, and I can only take so much racing.

So anyway, we keep looking at Wii games, since they are usually more family-friendly, much more variety to choose from, and the intrigue of motile interaction. I had to have one. And so I splurged.

So, one Wii, 4 controllers, and four wheels later - with Mario Kart Wii, Smash Brothers Brawl, and games like Wii Sports, Zelda Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Okami, and a couple others... I am in heaven. My wife and I frequently beat the shit out of each other in Brawl (Who needs counseling?) and I love Mario Kart's racing with the wheel.

Used Darwiin to hook my Wiimote up to my Mac and play some old Nintendo ROMs. That was cool.
Calling all cartoonists! May I have your attention, please!!
I need assistance. Many of you know that I've been trying to make a video of my process for coloring and inking line art for a while now with some bumps in my road. hospital stays and catchup at work withstanding, I'm close to getting back to normal around here. And.... I'm asking for submissions.

The Dealio
If you would like to offer a character penciled by yourself (either your own or fanart) that you would like me to use as a starting point for my tutorial (and have it colored at the same time!) I would be very grateful. I'll consider any submissions and decide by the end of the week which image I'll use in the video.

What's this video about?
It's video capture - while I'm working. The video will be likely split into 4 separate files/sections: My workspace and setup, Inking, Laying in the colors, and then some effects to finish it up. I'll edit out some of the long, repetitive stuff, but you'll be able to see all of the important aspects of what is being done, with explanations of why I'm doing these things. If you are interested in learning about how I do this, or just curious to watch, these videos should be a lot of fun to watch.

Feel free to post in your comments links to any artwork you'd like me to consider. I may do a few videos if the demand is sufficient and I like the images. We'll see how the first one goes.

Feel free to share this journal with anyone else you might know who would be interested. This has the potential to be very interesting.

I'm back (kinda) - I've been in and out of the ER/Hospital with extreme abdominal pain recently. Sorry I haven't been around much. I'm rearranging the house a bit and plan to make drawing a priority once I get back on my feet and get the house in order. It's a wreck and so an I.

I've been diagnosed with diverticulitis, then retracted that and diagnosed with appendicitis. But instead of operating on me they just treated it with antibiotics. So we still aren't sure what is causing the inflammation. Now we're just waiting to see when it happens again. I may still have my appendix out, I may not... Who knows anymore.

Fun eh?

So just before all of this crap happened I did go and buy the big screen TV. (The main reason the house it mid-rearranged. This happened as we were setting it up.) Still, the TV is nice as I lay here and recover while the swelling goes down. We watched the Ah, My Goddess movie this morning so don't be surprised if you see some artwork from that pop up in my gallery. We'll see. Sitting upright to draw is painful right now, so it may pass by the time I'm mobile again.

Later!
-John

Sometimes I feel like I'm on a roll and everything is just great. Sometimes I feel like I'm alone in a big room with like one or two other people way over there just minding their own business.

I've been drawing a lot lately, which I love. And I've been coloring other people's pencils lately (my last 6 deviations) which has really been fun. And today I looked back over those deviations and kinda sobered up.

Woo hoo, thirteen people liked one of them. I'm-a movin' on up in the world. My wife faved them all too, and she's supposed to do that so you can subtract one from each of those for a better perspective. It's like hanging art on the fridge, she's obligated.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't do it for the attention. But it does bother me that some crayon scribbles of Naruto characters can often 50 favorites in a day. I feel like I'm up on stage, rockin' away and I suddenly look down and there's maybe 3 people in the back of the huge empty room going "Woo, yeah! Grind the axe, man! Grind it!" and I'm like... wow, that totally killed my motivation. Art wants to be seen, right?

Maybe I should work harder at promoting like some people do. "Hey thanks for that fav on my deviation - conveniently linked here for everyone else to see too." To be honest, I don't like getting those comments, and I don't really feel like leaving them as well. Does that make me seem ungrateful? Is it just par for the course around here?

I have changed my Modus Operandi quite a bit. Maybe I'm still recovering from upsetting all of those photography fans that watched me and then left because now I'm drawing again. I suppose if *bleedman suddenly switched to needlepoint he might lose some watchers.

Anyway, there's my therapeutic rant on the subject. No sympathy is required. Just wanted to get it off my chest so I can move on...

... And draw more! Keep on grinding that axe, man! Grind on!! (I keep picturing Will Ferrell when I read that for some reason?)

Ever done something so incredibly stupid that you find it hard to believe you could do something that stupid? I just did.

So about a week or so ago I sold four items on eBay. Three of them all shipped on one day, but the forth - an iBook LCD screen - had to wait another day because I couldn't find a box safe enough to ship it in. So it went out the next day.

... to the wrong address.

It seems that I send two items to the same person. Now, in fairness to him, I sent them from two different UPS stores as well, so he probably didn't even realize they were both from me. So now I'm hoping he's honest and UPS can recover and re-deliver the package to it's intended recipient. If not, I'm out just under $200 for the whole mess. The buyer is pissed and wants to know why his package is in Kansas, and the unintended recipient is getting a letter explaining the situation in hopes that he'll help me out. If he says "I never saw it" then I'm screwed.

So much for making a little money on eBay. UGH!!

Head, meet wall.

This story is fictitious. The names and situations have been changed to protect the the people who just don't get it. - Got it?

Ok, so let's pretend that you bought something from a site online, like Amazon or something. And then when it arrives you notice that it's pink, and you thought you ordered blue. What the heck is up, let's inquire about it, shall we?

So you write customer service and they write back stating that they only sell pink, and that no one has ever complained about it before. So you get frustrated and tell them that you had the impression that it was supposed to be blue - and perhaps they should make a note somewhere on their web site so this sort of thing doesn't happen again cause hey - even if I'm the only person in the freakin world to get upset about it, I still feel I have a good reason to be upset given the circumstances.

Well then their president (whom you've previously had a praiseworthy relationship with) writes you back and claims that you are being "selfish," "ungrateful," "offensive," and that your point is "arbitrary" and "lacks common sense." He gets up on his soap box and rants that it's not a lot of money in the big picture for his organization... etc.

So you say what the hell is that all about? What does any of this have to do with any of that? (and to be fair, I'm still thinking this.) Somehow my frustration over a failure of communication has become some form of personal attack. Someone needs to tell this guy to hire a PR guy, because he just failed miserably at it.

So I reiterated my point, and they told the guy to go pound sand. What a train wreck. All I really wanted was someone to just give a shit that the confusion happened at all.

Whatever.

It arrived!
I received notice that it was signed for this morning, so I ran (briskly walked) over during lunch and stopped by our receiving only to find that a student worker was delivering the boxes already, so I met up with her and frisked her (she liked it) to find my Cintiq. She was a little weirded out that I wanted this thing so much. Don't worry baby, it's not you, it's just a Cintiq. And you, young lady, are no Cintiq!

Click for wide shot: [link] (It's huge for details...)

So plug it in already!
So I get back and dive in. This is not a portable tablet. It's got gobs of cables off the tower (Video, USB, and a power brick too) going to a control box that then goes up one cable to the Cintiq itself. Ugh, I'll have to replicate many of the cables at home so I don't have to bring them with me when I travel with it.

So what do I think?
It's nice. It's like using an Intuos3 with an LCD display. The pivot/rotate is lousy, so I'll keep using my Magnavox TV Lazy Susan to rotate it, but that's not a big deal. It's DARK. The LCD came at full brightness, which under my office lighting seemed very dark for a display with a AC/DC wall-wort.

Pressure and line resolution sensitivity?
Top notch! It's just like the Intuos3. This is worth getting rid of the TabletPC.

Dual-Monitors?
There is a toggle button which makes it a standard tablet for the primary monitor. So I use it as monitor 2, but I need to go click something on monitor 1, but I don't want to grab the mouse. I press the button and the Cintiq becomes an Intuos for the first monitor. Sweet huh? I don't need a second tablet for the additional monitor.

Closer shot: [link]

Verdict?
Don't know yet. Let me draw something with it first.

So I wrote a very long entry yesterday morning and then sat my laptop down, It locked up, and I lost everything. Poo...

First, I've been sick lately. I had a very sharp pain in my abdomen and went to the emergency room to have it checked out. Turns out I have an infection with swelling in my lower abdomen. So I've been on 2500mg of antibiotic a day (in 5 pills) and I'm feeling much better. Had to go on a liquid diet for a few days, and had to drop the caffeine due to it getting in the way of the antibiotic doing it's job. Ugh... I'm better off though.

Aside from that, my Cintiq is backordered and I already gave the TabletPC back at work. So I'm just taking it easy for a while until it arrives. Maybe Ill post some sketches if I get the chance. I put my Intuos on eBay already, so I'll recoup some $$ there.

My workload going forward consists of the following:
Pic of Blackfire for =KartoonKween
Drawing of Sesshoumaru - Just because
Potential collaborations with ~Narya13 if she's still willing to let me color her drawings.

And that's about it right now. I want that Cintiq so bad I can taste it.

Ok, so my Cintiq is shipping soon (YAY!) and I've already decided to sell my current Wacom tablet. So here's the deal:

Intuos3 6x11 widescreen tablet

Product page: [link]

This thing is in fantastic condition, virtually brand new with very little wear. (I don't draw as much as I should.) 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity. The Intuos product line is the best non-LCD tablet you can get from Wacom.

Comes with: Tablet with USB cable and customizable buttons, Software CD for Painter Essentials and Photoshop Elements, Wacom driver CD, Stylus Grip Pen with extra tips, and pen stand. (All of the normal stuff you'd expect that it comes with.)

It's a very awesome tablet that works in Windows or Mac OS, widescreen and regular monitors, or even twin monitor setups. Wacom software will be provided on factory CD - however you may want to just go download the newer drivers from their web site.) Nothing is broken, gouged, or maimed in any way.

I paid about $350 for it new, I'd like to get $250 for it. (Shipping free to USA, others inquire first please.) First person to express interest and complete PayPal payment gets it for about $100 less than you can get it on Amazon. Note me for my PayPal address.

Tell your friends!! I don't want to fuss with eBay if I don't have to...
