Very few photographers are ever recognized for their lifetime of work. Even fewer deserve to be recognized. However, XtremeCamera’s very first “;pro” member, John Running, is currently enjoying a huge retrospective of his work in Flagstaff Arizona.

The show, Forty Years Runnning” opened on October 28th and will run through November 30th, and if you have ever wanted to seek out inspiration for your own work, or wish to simply admire the work of a true artist, you should make plans today to see this gorgeous exhibit before its too late.

FORTY YEARS RUNNING
OFFERINGS TO THE GODS OF LIGHT AND SHADOW

The Flagstaff Photography Center’s next exhibit will feature John Running’s retrospective exhibit, Forty Years Running: Offerings to the Gods of Light and Shadow. This show will display a comprehensive collection of Running’s work from the 1970s until now.

On display you will see framed photos, work prints and memorabilia,
a caldron of work slow-cooked over four decades. The exhibit features iconic photos of cowboys and American Indians, photos from travels, and years of working in the Grand Canyon and the celebration of fine art nudes.

Running believes that his photographs are truly offerings to the Gods of Light and Shadow - that they are offerings of thanks for the privilege and gifts he has received over the past forty years. His work has been described as documentary in style and this exhibit documents his life and evolution as a photographer. The exhibit opens the evening of Wednesday, October 28th and will be on display until November 30th.

You are all invited to the October 28th Opening Reception starting at 6:00 PM at the Flagstaff Photography Center off Flagstaff’s Heritage Square.

The image comes first.

In the beginning, before there was language, there was a non-verbal way of
comprehending the world. There was the image. Now, except in our dreams, we
tend to translate images into words.

Recently, I made a series of photographs in my studio of women with wild animal skulls. Now that I have made these images, as I am trying to find words, it comes to mind that these photos are more about something from our distant past – from all the way back to the time of the ice.

I recently read the idea that, back at the time of our emergence, the female - the woman - was more than a fertility deity. More than a mother, she was also the first practitioner of medicine and magic and that, in fact, she was the Creator. Back in our stone age emergence, God was female and this still imprints our genetic codes.

For me, the image comes first. I see it in front of me – a woman holding an animal skull. I suggest to the model that this is about life, not death. She works with some
direction at first but soon it seems to me that as she carries and caresses her animal totem she becomes a soul carrier and spirit guide.

I react to this by submitting myself to the model and her intuitions. We become
collaborators as we respond to our GENETIC IMPRINTS.

Re-entry. I am in re-entry mode after 10 days on the Colorado River rafting through the Grand Canyon. My son JP was the boatman, he was the youngest on the trip (41), I was the oldest (68).
This was my 70th trip it was his well over 350th someplace.

I made my first trip in 1972, and since then have worked as photographer or boatman. I love making photos there - but it is a daunting subject. So big. So beautiful. I love the light - the play of light from sunrise to sunset.

I love the challenge and the results

I usually submit my photographs as series, which is the way I usually work. But, for the next month or so I will post a photo each day, or each day I am here in my Flagstaff, AZ studio.

I will row a boat 225 miles down the Colorado River on a science research trip.

18 days away fron it all. Life on the river is rather simple make your way down stream negociate some rapids try not to flip do the science cook some meals and just be.

This will be n my 60 something trip I like to thing I have made a trip for each of my almost 68 years.

I am new to this So many of you have souch cool journals how do youdo it like add photos and colors annd sound

I do keep a written journal have for over 30 years have 2 book cases full
