Do I really, really need to explain the difference between a short story and a not-short story in tiny words? I mean, I guess I do, since it's not like I haven't been asked to six times already. I've tried to be nice, I've tried to laugh it off, but I am seriously losing my patience. I especially do not appreciate logging in to see a bitchy passive-aggressive jab at the mod team because the person in question couldn't be bothered to read the forum announcements first.

In other less annoying news, my life isn't so much eaten by Aion as it is by the fall concert season. I also got a piano from my boyfriend's mother as an early Christmas gift, so yay!

I think on the Exalted front, it's just that I've lost a lot of my enthusiasm for the line as of late, between the increasingly obnoxious fandom and the developer's asshattery. >:/ Though I really do want to draw my Abyssals more. I've also decided to get back to basics with some simple tutorials and see if I can't unlearn some bad habits of mine.

I'm thinking of just novelizing the comic I was planning and making illustrations of key moments in it, and going with the idea of random 4-koma bluesid gags updated whenever. I want to finish Jo's story but right now I don't know that I have the ability to draw what's in my head for it, not without delaying this project another two years.

Anyway, in the meantime, I'm adding all my fanfiction I've written in the past six months. I'm also working on setting elements for a fantasy novel (possibly a trilogy!) but I don't know if I'll end up posting any of it here, since I think I'd actually like to try and publish it someday.

That's about all that's up with me right now.

1. An "orphan work" is "a work that has been copyrighted and it is impossible or difficult to contact the original copyright holder." I.E., you are dead or in exile or something along those lines.

2. The last time this bill came before Congress? 2006. Two years ago. Why it has come up again is that a new version is being drafted for consideration, which is so far from being passed as an actual bill it's not even funny. The last two times this bill was introduced, it was killed. With how much outrage it caused over the idea that orphan'd work would be passed into public domain, I seriously doubt it's going to pass this time.

Even better, from this article on OnCopyright:
"Given concerns previously expressed by some visual artist groups, the IP Subcommittee will probably make a few revisions to the language. Photographers, textile designers and graphic designers have argued that, unlike written content, their materials usually do not contain rightsholder information through no fault of the applicable rightsholders, and therefore orphan works legislation must address their unique infringement challenges."

In other words - they're considering changing the writing of the 2006 bill because so many people were so fucking pissed last time.

Even if this bill WERE to come up again in congress, there is literally nothing for you guys to worry about, if

1. You have included copyright info on your images, via using your real name to sign them, or watermarks.
2. You are still alive and have an internet connection, then you are not subject to it.

Please read ASMP's article on this bill being drafted for consideration. Orphan works bills in and of themselves are NOT harmful, they are intended to solve the problem of art that is not easily linked to its creator, and to assist organizations like museums, publishers, and academic institutions who would like to utilize orphan works once made public domain. This bill from 2006 was not intended to STEAL work from people, it is intended to solve the problem of how much it costs to try to contact people or next-of-kin who own so-called "abandoned" works, via the tax increase that was also proposed on this bill. It was killed due to the fact that the language was vague and intents unclear, making graphic artists and photographers in particular worried that any work they hadn't branded their name on would be used without their consent.

And for those of you wondering about the copyright thing, because I know this comes up a lot too, the United States is party to the Berne Convention as of March 1989. The Berne Convention, for those who don't want to read, states that copyright is automatic. As soon as you create something different from a preexisting work, your work is copyrighted.

Under the Convention, copyrights for creative works are automatically in force at creation, without being asserted or declared: an author need not "register" or "apply for" a copyright in countries adhering to the Convention. As soon as a work is "fixed", that is, written or recorded on some physical medium, its author is automatically entitled to all copyrights in the work and to any derivative works, unless and until the author explicitly disclaims them or until the copyright expires.

The only difference for the US is that if you want to seek legal action and reimbursement for attorney's fees, you need to register with the copyright office, which is of course a valid concern for a lot of people. The "poor man's copyright," i.e. mailing your work to yourself and using the postage date as the registered copyright date, has never once been recognized in a case of copyright law.

Turns out it blew a headgasket. Repairs are gonna cost $700. I can come up with half that. My parents agreed to the other half, as long as I agreed to pay them back, so I sold my soul for my car, basically. =_=

And... I'm just so upset. I was going to use that money to go back to school so I could get a degree and hopefully a better job... things are going to be super tight this month.

Anyway... suffice to say that I'm really trying to improve. I received a couple of arting things for Christmas this year (Prismacolors of yay from Lynne, an intuos wacom tablet from my boyfriend, woo!) and I'm wanting to put them to good use. I am, however, about to take the plunge and go back to school in an attempt to finish my degree, so updates will be sporadic when they happen.

I also got a PSP for my birthday and several games for it, so I'm currently, uh, addicted. ;

Anyway.

One of the absolute worst Suikoden fanfics I have ever read (worse even than a certain Gorudo/Miklotov rapefic with random bad Scottish dialect) is a two-parter called Raging Rune of Rockaxe. Seriously, I don't know what possessed this chick to post it on the internet without proofreading of any kind, but post it she did. We found it, and mocking ensued. (In fact, the line "Chala, your gonna have a childrens" was born from this fic. I have her to thank for that, at least.) About a year ago it disappeared from ff.net and I was sad for like three seconds before thinking "well, at least that's one less piece of crap online."

So this afternoon I was cruising the net checking messages and I Googled the title of the story out of curiosity. I didn't find it, but I DID find the authoress'.... "explanation" of what happened. It is a bowl of WTF spiced with batshit crazy.

Apparently, according to the authoress of this story, me and my "club of sadists" were TOSed, banned from the internets FOREVAR, and forced to pay $3500 in damages. For making fun of her poorly written fanfiction online. Obviously, none of this ever happened, but the lulz are A+++. Especially since fanfiction itself is pushing at the edges of copyright law.

Dude, I never even got a C&D letter from a fake internet lawyer like K'Arthur :<
