So to all of you I send a virtual cookie :cookie:, wishing you a happy and safe holiday.

And for all of you who could use a real cookie I give you a recipe for Anise Drops.
They're delicious, trust me.

Ingredients

4 eggs
1 teaspoon of baking powder
6 drops of anise oil
1 lb of powdered sugar
2 cups of flower
few drops of red food dye


Mix all ingredients well. Drop by teaspoon on waxed or parchment paper. let stand overnight. Bake at 350 F until slightly browned.

Yields 3-4 dozen.

Hey,

For all of us who work retail it is the holiday season. Store are busy, traffic is terrible and the Christmas music is driving us crazy. Needless to say I have not been regular with updates. For all of us here in the US Thanksgiving is next Thursday. I wont be home to post a deviation of the week and the following Friday is going to be crazy (I hate black Friday with a vengeance:fork: ), So needless to say there wont be any deviations of the week this month. But I will resume Posting them in December.

In the mean time I’d like to put a spotlight on a cute little independent film I recently saw called “Never Say Macbeth”:popcorn:.

The film follows Danny, a science teacher, from Toledo who follows his ex-girlfriend, a former drama teacher, to LA in an attempt to win her back. Once in LA Danny unknowingly invokes the curse of “The Scottish Play” an all hell breaks loose.

I was very involved in my high school drama department when I was younger and I got a kick out of this film.took me down memory lane. I myself remember having to “cleanse” myself after walking under a ladder during a production of “Oklahoma”(After nine hops backward, spinning clockwise and doing the Can Can, disaster was everted) . I have been so preoccupied these past few weeks that I have totally neglected my account. I’m going to try to be more regular but we’re entering that time of year where we are inundated with orders at work that need to be finished for Christmas. I think for the time being I’m going to try to update my journal every two weeks instead of every week, that will give me more tome to get things done.

It must be the cold wether ‘cuz I just haven’t felt up to painting lately. Of course it could be due to the craziness of work. I’m going to try and do something fun in honor of the fall season, which is my favorite time of year ( Hi, my name is Kami and I’m a halloween-olic!)
last night at the dinner table we were discussing halloween, actually the conversation was focused on beggars night and past experiences with people that passed out bad treats. My brothers and I were adamant that the wort treats ever passed out were the toothbrushes one of our neighbors gave out every year (they were dentists). My parents were arguing that while the toothbrush was pretty bad, the apples they got as kids were worse because the smashed all the other treats in the bag! (In my mothers case they would also smash the vanilla wafers one little old lady gave out every year.) this prompted my father to say that as a kid he felt that they should of amended “Trick or Treat” so that it would go like this...
...”Trick or Treat, give us an apple and we’ll burn your feet!”
I spent ten minutes laughing an coughing up my dinner.

I thought that this week I’d do something different and try to offer up some info that may be useful to know instead of my customary Deviation of the Week (which will resume next week). Most of us on deviantArt are not going to be custom framing our own artwork, but you might know someone who will be in need of framing services, so you can pass the info on and look like an expert at the same time:D

Here area few questions I have been getting at work lately.

1. should I mat my artwork? Why?

Yes! Mats don’t just look good. Their main purpose is to keep your artwork away from the glass where condensation can form and cause your art, photos, or whatever you have framed, to stick to it.

What you should look for in a mat?

look for your framer to show you a design that includes at least two mats. One mat just doesn’t leave enough space to protect your art. You also want an acid free mat (acid is the No.1 enemy of art) preferably a “rag mat”.

2. Glass or no glass?

Most conservators are suggesting you put glass or plexi on all art types, including oil paintings. I second that. Everything, including archival inks to stabilized pigments in pants, are susceptible to fading. Framing quality glass will block out over 90% of UVA and UVB rays.

But I don’t want the glair of glass over my beautiful painting!

No need to worry. Most framers offer an museum quality glass that not only reduces glair, like frosted non-glair glass, but looks almost invisible (seriously, I have had clients on numerous occasions look at their finished frames and exclaim that we forgot to put the glass on their piece...... until they touch it and leave a finger print!) but be prepared to pay a pretty penny for it ( though I have never had a client who regretted getting the better looking glass.)

3. What makes you qualified to frame my art?

I get this one a lot and it’s a very good question to ask. Wether you go to a mom and pop shop or some place like Michaels, Jo Anns, or any other large craft store that offers framing, you need to know that your framers know what they are doing. I work in a shop inside one of these large craft store and some clients assume that I’m just a regular associate who happen to pull frame shop duty that day. I’m not, I’m specially trained to work only in the frame shop as the framers at your local craft store are. If your still unsure of your framer ask them about how they would frame your art. Key words to look for are preservation, preservation mounting, acid free, and UV blocking, basically if they look and sound like they know what they are doing they probably are.

4. Finally, how much should I expect to pay?

Well, ultimately it depends on size and the final design but expect to spend at least $150 if not much, much, more. If your intimidated by the price your framer gives you feel free to ask for a quote and think about it. Remember custom framing is a custom service, so in most cases once you place your order there is no going back.

I have a odd tendency of remembering lots of useless information. Today at work while finishing up a project I started contemplating the use of bumppons. We use them for their intended purpose, protecting walls from the back side of a picture frame, but others have come up with some more interesting uses for them. For example, the properties master for the series “Enterprise” uses them to simulate buttons on those palm pilot thingys ( I’m not a treckie, so I have no clue what they are suposed to be called). The costume designer for “Repo: the Genetic Opera” used them on the Genters for placement and ventilation purposes. (<-- That was the useless info:D)

So I was thinking that I might come up with another use for them too, see how far outside the box I can think. I challenge everyone to exercise your mind and come up with a new use, piratical or artistic, for something you use every day.

Or not. You dont have to just a thought. :D

One is 30% done, so you won’t see it for a while and the other is like 10% done so it will be a while. But I am working! I spent the whole day in my studio painting.

So this past Tuesday evening I attended the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition’s opening reception where, to my delight, I discovered my piece “Harassment” was awarded an Artist Choice award. I have actually never won anything in my entire life (seriously not even a spelling bee in grade school) and I can’t describe how wonderful it feels to receive an award for my work (even if it is only the state fair;) )

The reception was much nicer this year than in past. The main reason is because this summer has been a fairly cool one and the Cox Center For fine Arts building is not air conditioned (one year a sculpture of a bunny made of wax melted :o ) so it wasn’t unbearably hot. Good food, good music, great art. The quality of the pieces chosen this year are superb. There is noticeably more photographic and textile work this year, which is great because sometimes they just get overlooked. i was blown away by a quilted peacock that I so would of bought if I could afford it. So If your going to be in Columbus in the next to weeks and need a day outing, head on over to the fair and see the show. It’s not all about the cows ya know!

Speaking of poor writing I Had to finish and send in an artist statement about my photo “Harassment” that will be on display at The Ohio State Fair . [link] Everyone who has won something has to submit one and as I have never won before I drew a blank as to what I should say or what they would be looking for.
so here’s mine.

In much of my work I explore the idea of the artist as the actor. Thus many of my pieces are self portraits where I become other people. The final product is the result of hours of physical transformation and exploration into each character that I become. “Harassment” is part of a series where I explored what it would be like to be someone that was so well known that they would often be bombarded with paparazzi, unable to escape the prodding eyes and blinding flashes of the cameras.

I guess it’s Ok but I really wished I had taken time to read some of the artist statements from past years :stupidme:. Keeping fingers crossed that mine doesn’t sound like a forth grader wrote it compared too everyones else”

I don’t usually look at custom dolls but Marina-B’s are amazing. Not only are they beautifully painted but I cant get over the little details in the face, hands and feet. It is like each of her dolls has its own personality. I highly recommend visiting her personal website and watch the videos on the gallery page of her manipulating the finished dolls. They are even better when being moved and actively posed.

I was thrilled when I discovered hanatsukuri’s wonderful gallery full of Tsumami kanzashi. It finally gave me a name and explanation of what the lovely hair ornaments that geisha wear. (I sorta became obsessed with them when I was little after seeing the Shirley MacLaine film “My Geisha” ) This lovely piece beauty comes from the wonderfully died fabric and simple but elegant arrangement of the blossoms and falls.

EDIT: So I was crusin' the new deviations (as I do)and found this journal [link] if you haven't read it you should. This is just one of the things that really pisses me off as an artist. There are way to many people out there that think that just because they buy a piece of art they can do whatever they want to it ie. deface it. WRONG! You still have rights to your work even after you sell it! If a purchaser destroys a piece of your art it is copy write infringement. I urge all artist to go out and buy a copy of Tad Crawfords book "Business and legal Forms for Fine Artists" and use the ready to use forms EVERY TIME you sell something commission or not. make sure you you have a Non-destruction, Alteration clause in your contract. We need to stop these people and protect our selfs and our art!

Congratulations!

I know I haven’t uploaded anything lately but it’s coming! I’m working as fast as I can on my new painting but oils don’t like to dry very quickly. I’m very happy with it so far an cant wait till I’m finished because I already have an idea for my next painting which I’ll tell you about later

EDIT: So I've been a little crazy this week because I have been waiting for my acceptance/ not accepted letter from the Ohio State Fair Fine Arts committee (or whatever they're called). I enter pieces every year but last year I did not get accepted so I was very nervous this year. Well not only did I get something accepted I won something too! (I wont know what until the opening of the exhibit in July but I have a feeling It's not a major award:( ). So if your going to be in the Columbus area between July 29-August 9 and want to see some of my work in real life and have some fun at the same time, head on over to The Ohio State Fair. I'll try to get the piece I entered up soon so for those of you who don't want to or cant travel, can see it:D

I hope everyone has been having a better week than I have. I arrived at work this past weekend to discover that, once again my hours have been cut. I’t very frustrating To go from working 28 hrs a week part-time to drumroll................................. six! A well, I guess I should just be thankful that I have a job. Anyway the good news is that I’ll have more time to finish my painting so it may be up sooner than planed.

In other news I’ve submitted a new design over at moderntee.com [link] so go check it out and vote! I even suggest signing up and submitting your own designs.(Tries Jedi mind trick)Do it...you'll have fun.:D

I really enjoy the warm/cool color relationship in this piece. One of the things a portrait artist has to learn is that flesh tones aren’t just peach (or brown) with white mixed in to make a highlight and black to make a shade, there are pinks and blues and greens and every other color imaginable. The Call is a wonderful example showing the many colors that an be present depending on light an atmosphere.

I have decided that I am going to feature every week a new piece of art from my favorites gallery. Everyday I find more and more things I love here on DA and I just want to share them with people. So here’s how Kami’s Deviation of the Week is going to work. Every Thursday I’ll post my choice for the week here in my journal along with a little wright up on why. I’m also going to create a folder in my fav gallery to archive my choices.

I am also working on a new painting, so for all of you who are waiting to see my next canvas all I can say it’s coming but it will be a few weeks. Sorry but thats just how paintings are, they need time for the layers to dry. But that doesn’t mean you won’t see new stuff in my gallery. I cant paint 24/7 so I’ll post some drawings and photos in the mean time.

Also if anyone is interested I can post some of the portraits I did in school (just basic studio work but nice none the less)
