On a funny note, one of our computers died due to a virus. It's funny because the computer was super old anyway, but we lost tons of photographs. There goes the family memories, yes? My printer is pretty much dead, as well, so trying to work on the current commission will require me to use another method or someone else's printer. I'm very mathematical when it comes to getting an image transferred to a larger (in this case) canvas. Obsessive compulsiveness seems to run in the art world. Also had my first root canal just recently. How many people would tell you that a root canal was fun? I had so much fun after the procedure because they numbed my mouth and trying to drink from a cup was such an oddity I just HAD to experiment! Totally awesome experience. My tooth doesn't hurt at all, so that's a blessing. The other blessing is is I have a bf now. Hehe. Uhhmm... there's more to the list to add but I'll leave with that. Hoping to work on some artwork when I feel a little better. Started an image a few days ago after listening to Owl City. Not sure where I'm going with it but I'm trying to get out of the art block. So we'll see.

During the funeral they spoke of saints and how they didn't have to become saints by doing large acts of kindness, but small. An example of such kindness was holding doors for others, just as my grandpa had done for so many others. Later, while a song played, a lady behind me weeped loudly. I saw my sister grab kleenex from her bag and hand it to her. Small acts of kindness that our grandfather had showed us.

Anyway, I heard recent rumor that Fullmetal Alchemist (the new anime version) already has about two episodes out? Does anyone know anything about that? I'm super curious to see it! I heard it's supposed to be based more off of the manga this time around.

I also just found out a few days ago that the second Transformers movie is coming out this June. I heard Linkin Park is doing a song for it again. HOORAY! I can't help it, I love their music. lol

You'll be happy to know that I've been getting more used to the wacom tablet. I still can't fully draw an image on the computer, but I did draw a new hand on a character today, so I'm thinking it might not be too far away! Right now I'm working on character designs for the series I'm working on. I drew about four new character designs in the past few days. I don't plan to submit them on DA.

I'm thinking of doing some fan art again to get back into the drawing groove a little more, so if anyone wants any digital fan art done for free, let me know by commenting to this journal. The first reply gets one. See below....

The next few weeks might be fun. I was getting a little frustrated with trying to color images on Photoshop with a mouse again, so I bought a Wacom tablet. I figured it would be a good investment since I plan to continue drawing animations, too, and I have so much paper flying around that maybe I should animate through digital imagery instead. I played with it a little bit today. It's so weird, but it's kool. It'll just take some time to get used to.

I also wanted to update here about my current status. I am open for:

So yeah... living on-campus. I originally felt that I needed to do it (reasons were: 1. Series concerns college students in the dorms, 2. My workload this semester is so horrendous that driving would have been impossible, and 3. To get out of my box, obviously. ). Last semester I felt well enough visiting other student's apartments that I figured it would be a good place to strike it out on my own. I was originally going to quit and start working FT over summer, but after talking to my advisor, I realized I at least needed to take Character Animation before I left. It's supposed to really kick your butt and work hard on your skills. If any class was going to tell me how I would do in the future, that'd be it. I'm still not sure what to do, so I'm hoping I'll be given a sign within the next two months (November 1st is the deadline for moving-out forms). After being in college for four years already, I just feel more like I want to work than be educated at this point. Art has always been a past time for me and so doing it 24/7 at school last year kicked my butt.

Next weekend I'll be heading home for a few days (unless something unexpected comes up). I'm hoping to go to the state fair and finally find a pair of pants that actually FIT. C'mon! My butt isn't THAT big.............

The Big Project

The series research is coming to an end. I was writing down some information the other day and realized that there really isn't much more that needs to be looked up. Just a few odds and ends as time progresses.

So this morning we had one working land phone... and then our garage door died. A bolt of lightning struck too close to the house and fried it, we think. Trust us. We heard it.

Thinking... "Okay, we have cell phones. Thank God for them because at least we can communicate this way." I checked mine this morning and it told me "ttyl." You can imagine my surprise when my cell phone tells me it'll "talk to you later." Can't call out to anyone, and incoming calls are pretty lagged.

Good gracious... what's next? I'm waiting for the Internet to die.

So our school has been having laptop trouble and just this morning my laptop started showing some symptoms of hard drive crash. If it happens, my laptop will be out for two weeks and it's my main Internet access. Just an FYI for watchers and such. (However, according to its symptoms, I'd be more inclined to say that it's an electrical problem than a hard drive malfunction.)

Better to have it happen in the summer months! lol

Otherwise, it looks like I'm probably going to stay at MCAD now. I had thought about going back to my old college but I can't stand writing papers anymore. All I ever want to do is draw or make things. Making animations intrigues me so much it's just like I have to know how everything works. I just don't really want to wait, so I want to practice over summer.

Umm... in other news, I guess, I saw a tons of police cars, a SWAT team, and a Negotiations team outside of school today. It literally scared me so much I was shaking. It wasn't taking place at the school itself but the courtyard was so quiet I began to wonder, as I walked in, if I was getting myself into anything. The security officer advised I stay inside the school until I received an e-mail of the "all-clear." I later found out it was a block away. Nonetheless, seeing that isn't something I'd like to see again.

Finally, my nephew's christening is this weekend. I'm god-mommy, so this'll be interesting. I hope he likes the cross and teether I got him!

So most of my Spring Break was spent on practicing my drawing skills. It took a few hours but I began to understand facial expressions again. I'll try to scan some later to throw into scraps.

ROAD TRIP/GRANDPARENTS
I spent half of my Spring Break visiting my grandparents. We stayed with the two who weren't doing too well a few months ago. My grandfather with the cancer and grandmother with the broken wrist. I got in my game of "War" (card game) with grandpa. Visited with aunts, uncles, cousins. Showed them "The Princess Party" and ate tons of food. I kept getting complimented on my haircut. I've had the style a few times but I forgot that none of them had seen it yet. I just got it cut on Wednesday again because the last hairstyle I had was seriously bugging me. So much for trying something new!

I also visited my other grandma out in the country on the way home. She always asks to see my artwork so I showed her the ones on my laptop. It was a bit hard on her eyes, though, so I only showed her a few.

FINAL ANIMATION
I'm sure Tom is gonna kill me. roflmbo He apparently got mad last time because I did character animation and he made it sound like we weren't supposed to at critique. He never said it when we started the project. Anyway, I want to do series animation. And so I'm most interested in character animation. So that's what I want to do.

ANYWAY. I was listening to a few songs over break and they gave me a great idea:

I suck at making music (I'm better at responding to it than making it) but I suppose I could try if I need to. We'll see what happens Friday in class.

Did I cry?

I received an e-mail last Friday from a teacher I'd had last semester. The phrase, (directed toward me) "aiming to leave," hung like a song note in the air. She was someone I had respect for and I knew I needed to talk to her soon, but she beat me to it. So we met yesterday.

"So what's up with you?"

I told her all I could remember of ranting here, about being unhappy of where I was, not looking forward to what I was told I'd be doing, but also mentioning that I have a deep love for both animation and comic art equally, so much so that I honestly cannot choose between them. And my ultimate dream of series writing.

"You're in the wrong major."

What?

"You're a storyteller. You want to pitch your ideas to people and have them help you make it a reality."

What a revelation! Honest-to-God! FINALLY someone was able to put it into WORDS for me! Like that blanket of fog and bricks lifted while the often-dreams of spring seemed to just colorize the world. (Don't laugh, I mean... it was ACTUALLY 50 degrees outside, also!)

I can see clearly now. The primary had been found; I am a storyteller. But there remain a secondary (the medium), and a third (how to accomplish this), to be discovered.

One small step now, and in continuation, I'll learn more and find a path on which to travel. There are many of them to choose from, and each require a lot of effort. But there are many more people to meet, many more people to learn from, and many more people to share days with before even that can be decided. People, friends, truly are grand.

Also, an update about something I posted back in November. [link] My grandpa is doing alright and things seem hopeful! They're trying out a new type of cancer treatment on him and we're hoping he recovers. My grandma, however, broke her wrist. There is a good part to this, though. She went to the hospital this morning so they could look at it again and found that she had a 99% plugged artery to her heart. They caught it in time to treat her. So you begin to wonder if the broken wrist actually was worth it, you know? I'm just glad that they caught it before she had a heart attack. I plan to go see them the second half of spring break week, which is one month away!

On a personal level I think I'm almost certain on the school situation now. I'm 99% certain I'm leaving. It'll never be 100% since that 1% uncertainty will always be there. I tried explaining why during a presentation last Friday in Sophomore Seminar class. I could tell that quite a few students were understanding the situation, and I'm glad I told most of the message before I had to bow out. That was only the job portion of it, though. There are so many reasons outside of that that it seems only to make sense to me. When I even say "money issue," most students write it off as the same situation they have, but there is a difference and I won't mention it here out of respect.

This summer I'm going to work. Would have either way. Might take an accounting course at the local community college, too. I'll be saving up my paychecks to buy myself a studio, including a 11x17 scanner (for my comics) and the After Effects program (or a similar program to make animations). I also need to up the RAM on my desktop computer. I have a lot of money saving to do.

FYI ABOUT THE GAME!
I'm a novice at Dreamweaver and so some of the pages open up in new windows. I have no idea how to fix that right now and I forgot to ask my teacher at the end of class, too. So just be aware of that so your browser doesn't start slowing down from ten pages open at the same time. (Likewise, if anyone knows how to fix that, please let me know.)

So like I was saying, I took another break this morning. I've been surfing the web like the old days and found some helpful links for young adults. College student or worker, a lot of these articles were pretty interesting.

First up... happiness. Reported by "60 Minutes." It's a video that I haven't watched yet even, but I intend to once I am off campus. [link]

As college students we often get little to no sleep. And when you eat some foods, you may end up wasting your sleep time just *trying* to sleep. So "Yahoo!" had two articles up about that. One is what foods you should eat before bed, and one is what foods you shouldn't eat before bed. (Personally, I was taught never to eat within 2 hours of bedtime or you might gain more weight!)

I was trying to think of something interesting theme-wise. For some reason, the "old woman who lives in a shoe" rhyme keeps surfacing. That's what I get for being overtired.

I've also been researching for my seminar class's presentation assignment. I found something other animators might find interesting! This site has a ton of information on it about what to study most while in school, to jobs and the market itself. The news archive is really beneficial. [link]

As for life-wise, during Spring Break I'm probably going to visit my grandparents for the first time in about two years. My grandma just broke her wrist so I feel I should go down even more. Too bad it's another month away.

Also finished my walk cycle. I'll post a link to it later. It might be a week from now because I have to update it with a DreamWeaver site for Media II for a week. It'll go back to normal pdq afterward.

Guess I should get back to homework. I want to catch up more so I can work on my series and put it into comic format. One of my teachers said she knows someone that seems to own a small publishing company. People who have previously looked to be published suggest to either look for an agent or a small publishing company if you haven't been published before. I read about it somewhere on the net, but the bookmarked link where I thought I'd found it isn't working so I'll put that up later if anyone wants. (I believe it was comixtalk.com.)

...I have to drive in that.

I'm waiting to get some projects back to upload them. Many of them will be thrown into scraps but I'll feature a few of them. Today I have to do a project based on the "Five Obstructions." The movie title escapes me but I know that Lars Yoixtrier and Vorgen Leth were in it. We had to write down five things we usually do that we could not use on our next project. For instance, I do a lot of inking so I said that I couldn't use ink. In the end, my obstructions were:

1. Must be a full-color image
2. No coloring with, or overall use of Photoshop (though I might just to shrink it so the teacher can at least bring it home).
3. No black line
4. The only media you can use is paper and whatever adhesives to have them stick
5. One of the pieces of paper must be a pattern that was pre-made

This is going to be interesting.... I haven't really done an "all-paper" assignment since high school, and that was with magazine tear-outs.

*HERE* is where I begin to say that I'm "treading water." I hate to go off about this but I REALLY need to get it off my chest.

I'm getting nowhere. Or at least... I feel that way.

To set some things straight first? I don't know a lot of things and I am certainly NOT better than anyone else. Everytime I see someone else's work that really impresses me, I try to work harder (even if I lose too much sleep over it). I've always held a competitive spirit and an understanding that everything I've done was meant to be. I highly believe in fate and it's brought me here for a reason. I also believe that I was meant to meet the people I have thus far in life. For that I have no regrets. I am not trying to make anyone side with me and I am certainly up for anything anyone has to say in return. I just ask that you understand my P.O.V. before making any hasty judgments.

SECOND OF ALL, I am NOT "anti-MCAD." Though this "rant" sounds pessimistic, there are good points and bad points to everything. It is just that the points in the direction of which I am heading don't seem so good.

Two years ago I'd decided to quit school after graduation and start working FT at wherever I could, believing that the small two-year degree I would leave with would be worthless. In fact, it still is pretty worthless. The economy is so bad right now that not a lot of college students are even getting hired in their chosen career. Only a few choice degrees are even getting jobs, and that's usually if you don't get the full degree (because they don't want to pay too much to keep you). I've studied the job market for awhile now and asked questions about everything I've seen. And now I'm even more up-tight about it. I came to MCAD to get a degree nonetheless, because I felt that it would help me pave the way to my career and help in getting my stories out there.

After graduation from MCAD... what about job opportunities?
I've only heard of one animation student that even received a job after graduation. The majority of others, of whom I've lost count, did not. Our teacher said that animation is moving to India because it is cheaper. Then why am I in it? There might be a ghost in the house cuz the downstairs room is totally going bogus! First the wind chimes, now the radio turns on whenever it wants to!

Went through a list of all the animation required courses you need to take to graduate.......... and the time frame because of the transferring. Only one thing I can say: OMG. I hope I can keep my head straight if I stay on the animation path.

Tomorrow is the ice shanty exhibit! I have to write this response paper on it, but I hear it's pretty kewl so I hope to have a bunch of fun!
