Here I go talking about Cancer again. As my hair is not 'virgin' (ie not dyed) I couldn't pursue with my plans in cutting my hair and donate it to charity (but I will!). However, I later found out that a friend of mine had planned to cut her long beautiful hair and donate it, together with a funraised amount of £1,000 (~€1,090), to Cancer Research UK. I will leave you to her personal message which speaks by itself.

Dear all,

One in three people will be affected by cancer at some stage in their lives. You might know someone who has or has had cancer, I have known a couple.

My project started two years ago when I decided to grow my hair so that I could donate it to a charity that could make a wig out of it, so that someone going through chemotherapy would have the pleasure of having hair in a time where they may not. Having a human hair wig in a time where you are going through a lot of emotional pain will help the patient remain strong, hopeful and confident about their health. Along the way, I hope to raise £1,000 to donate along with my hair!

My hair will be cut at mid-end of May 2009 in Manuel e Mariana, a hairdresser in Cascais, Portugal who have also donated to my cause.

The article that I was writing before and went went bye bye on me, was the one about the birds and climate change: [link] . It's based on a lot of reading from different sources, so that is why I was nearly crying - I worked hard on this one.

Each year, hundred of thousand seals - mostly babies under 2 weeks old - are slaughtered for no other reason than peeling off their fur. This massacre is starting again this year in a matter of weeks.

Killing baby seals was a recurrent practice in Canada until major public protests forced the country to ban killing "whitecoat" baby seals in 1987, and the seal slaughter essentially collapsed. Then, in 1996, that changed, as the Canadian government started subsidizing the massacre in an effort to rebuild it (for some motive that is not openly identified).

It has grown almost every year, and it is now the largest marine-mammal slaughter in the world, with up to 330,000 harp seals killed annually and all through an inhumane method.

In the US, the sale of seal fur has been banned since 1972. Belgium and the Netherlands have passed laws banning the importation of seal fur, and the European Union is considering similar legislation. Just last week, a committee in the EU Parliament voted in favor of a strong prohibition on trade in seal products - this brings Europe one step closer to a complete ban.

Canada will be hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and so the world’s eyes will soon be turning its way. That’s why PETA, one of the largest animal rights organization in the world, has thrown this campaign against the seal slaughter into high gear - and they will be keeping it there all during the coming year, right through the Games.

As you can see things are changing but it is still not enough. The perfect time to act is now

How can you help?

1. Urging Canadian Olympic organizers to save the Olympics by saving the seals by calling for a ban on future seal massacres. It will only take one click: [link]

2. Spread the word. It is essential to inform others about worthy causes like this one, bring them along and, effectively, be aware.

3. If you can donate, support PETA's work to stop the Canadian seal slaughter and to end this ridicularity by bringing an end to animals murdering for their skins: [link]
