They're cool like that. So why not have a field guide to all the types of dragon beyond the chromatic ones? Anyone can enter, and you may well get published. Anyway, nothing much to report. I've been incredibly stressed over something lately, and I can't quite figure out what, but it's making my left eyelid twitch a lot. Probably job search plus commissions plus Shalkith, but those last two I don't mind.

On Saturday I went to Pokémon Rocks America in San Jose, which was cool (though the lines were long). I got 5 Mystic Tickets (one for each cartridge!) and 5 Metang downloads. XD I'll give ~illucian her two games back when I see her this week. I also ran into a friend from high school who was working there. I didn't get a chance to chat with her though. Later on I made a possible connection at Nintendo. *wants to work there so badly* The guy apparently remembers me from allllllll the random people he met at E3 while working at the Pokémon booth there. 1. Where do you want to be?
If the answer is working artist professional, this is what the rant is for. I'm writing this trying to think of myself on a professional level, working for large companies with national liscences and side by side with other industry professionals. I, in the end, want to be in charge of creating games, and maybe one day move into film or media.
You have to decide for yourself what level you want to be. I think of this as concentric circles of influence, and the larger you think and work, the larger the influence gets. Smallest circle would be I draw for fun, then something like I draw and show my direct friends and they like it, I draw and show strangers on devart or something and they like it, I draw and show my work at cons and people like it, I draw for money and people pay me, I draw for small jobs and they pay me, I draw for a living, I draw for a living and freelance on the side, I draw for large companies and I can't draw on the side due to NDA, I draw and am kept on retainer when not drawing to keep me from drawing for others, I create national franchises, etc etc.
The larger you dream, the more you have to work for it, and the farther you'll go.

1. DRAW EVERY DAY, DRAW FROM LIFE.
Still life, strangers, your hand, your dog, the texture on your wall, SOMETHING. Stronger sense of real life drawing will only contribute to fantasy work.

2. Want to be a professional? Act like a professional.
Rise above name-calling, shit-flinging, and obvious baiting. Take the high road, and the other party will look all that much smaller. And even if it's not immediate, their petty behavior WILL catch up in the end. If you act like that person isn't worth even the few minutes for a response, drama ends right quick.

3.Each job is a contract.
You enter into an agreement with a client for a piece of work in a predetermined amount of time. The cilent has a duty to pay you, give you clear info, and only request the amount of changes you designate (I go with one pass through in final sketch, and one on the final) or pays you for more changes. You stay in contact, and finish the work ON TIME. Or you don't take new work until that work is finished, AND stay in contact with the client. If this is a giant painting comission that's going to take 80 hours and 2 months, say so, bill accordingly, and do it.

4. Balance out your influences.
You love Miyazaki? Look at Pyle. Love Giger? Look at Monet.
Broadening your artistic influences helps make you a far more well rounded artist. You may not even like all the artists you look at, but that doesn't mean you're not gleaning something from them, even if it's "Damn I'm never doing that."

5. You influences should not stop at your Deviantart/Sheezyart/Flist
People from 5, 50, 500 years ago also have something to teach you. Baroque, Art Noveau, hell the cave paintings have something to teach you. Get off the internet and go look at the library/local museum.

6. It's okay to look at photos for reference.
It's NOT okay to trace them.

7. Don't be so crippled by the thought of ART TEEF that you don't make a piece.
Just because someone else on the internet drew something with the same theme doesn't mean you can't visit the same theme. My roomate was afraid to paint a fantastic idea because she saw something in a Spectrum with some of the same themes. Not even the same composition, but both involved a girl standing in a tree.
So what, do your girl standing in tree piece, because it's been done, it's probably being done right now, and it'll be done in the future.

8. If you ARE traced, bucket filled, or bitten off, let it go.
How much time and energy are you wasting hovering over deviantart or someone else's gallery page because they've ripped you? Could this energy not be put to better use?
Kids are going to rip, uncreative people are going to rip. But you, and your clients, and your peers are going to know the difference, and that's what matters. Keeping a calm, professional attitude is going to say worlds more to these kids than yanking each one aside. Joe Mad isn't running these people down, Todd Lockwood isn't either. They're working on making themselves better artists.

9. Being ganked online isn't worth your time, but people stealing your art for profit is.
Find your art being sold on shirts? On ebay? On cds? Fire off a cease and desist, demand recompense, and if the company is large enough, take them to small claims. This is real art theft.

10. Don't limit yourself in your body of work.
I've got a lot of anthro artists on my flist. That's cool. But if you want to be a professional, have more in your portfolio than animal-people.
