I tend to over-plan things a lot. Not sure if that's good or bad. For example, the comic I want to do, Nemina: Earthen Legacy. Here's some things I know I have to do (well, I think I have to do them) before I can even really get into doing the comic itself:
-sketch and finalize all the character designs (this applies more to official characters than it does to my OCs)
-make color pallets for every character (this I may want to do a little at a time... there are a lot of characters, so the pallets would probably be done on an issue-by-issue basis. However, issue one there's at least 8 main characters, if not more.)
-make a list of every character's personality traits so that when I write them, they're consistent in the way they act and interact with other characters

And that's not even taking into account what I have to do for the comic itself, which is pretty much everything. I haven't even finished the script for issue one yet. Probably because my mind can't just script a c... ]]> ~kira-mcgrath

Allen and I went to my mom's for Thanksgiving. Yummy food, but she didn't make sweet potatoes! p_p I love her sweet potatoes... no apple pie either, but I think that's b/c my brother came home about a month ago for some school break and she made apple pie for that. Although to be fair, I didn't even think about the "missing food" until after we got home - I was too busy enjoying the food that was there!

So go home and go to bed @ 7:30pm b/c I have to get up at midnight so I can be to work at 1am. Well I slept for an hour, but then I laid awake in bed until about 11:15pm, when our roommate came home with his girl of the day and they started being loud in the kitchen. ¬_¬ So I got up, ate food (well, pie), got ready for work, and then Allen and I left. Allen went to Black Friday shop. I got to stand outside in near freezing temperatures for 9 hours, 8 of which it was raining. So we both had a crappy day in that sense. Q: Is Kira Ani McGrath your real name?

A: No, it's my pen name. My pseudonym. My alias. My screen name. Whatever you want to call it, it's not my real name. I wanted my pen name to look like a real name, but I will also freely admit that Kira Ani McGrath is not my real name (or freely (but gently) correct, as some people have assumed that it's my real name and I've had to (kindly) set them straight XD).

Q: What should I call you?

A: My friends call me Kira, because they know who they're referring to and so do I. But Kira is a bit of a common internet name now (especially with Death Note lovers), so I usually just go by KAM.

Q: How did you come up with your internet name?

A: First off, Kira did not come from Death Note. I was finally made to watch Death Note this past August (2009), however I have obviously been calling myself Kira for a much longer time. As you can see in this deviation, there is hard evidence that I was calling myself Kira before Death Note even came out in Japan (much less the US).

I've actually been calling myself Kira online since I first started using the internet, which was back in the summer of 2001, when my family moved to a place close to the public library. The reason for this was that my use of the internet came with stern warnings from my parents, teachers, and librarians never to use my real name online, lest some internet predator deduce my identity, find my address, and come kidnap me (hey, I was 13, okay?).

But my use of Kira is even older than that. I originally came up with "Kira" in 1999 (the end of fifth grade (age 10) and the start of sixth grade (age 11)). I needed a name for my original character that I was making up for Pokémon (which was brand spankin' new at the time, thank you very much). At first I was thinking about "Kara", because I liked the name. But I wondered what I would get if I changed the vowels. So I played around with the name on the mini chalkboard that hung on the wall beside my bed (yes, I actually remember doing this), going down the list of vowels: "Kara" "Kera" "Kira" "Kora" "Kura" "Kyra". I liked Kira and chose it as the name for my character. When I started getting into other shows (Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!), I used Kira as a first name for my character for those shows as well (but I differentiated them by middle names). Because when you're that young, you pretend/act/feel like you are those characters you make up, I "became" Kira. So when it came time to start using the internet, Kira was the natural choice for a name so that I wasn't using my real one.

"McGrath" was added as my alias last name (what can I say, I wanted a full name) soon after I started using the internet. The first drawing I can find on my computer where I signed my name "Kira McGrath" was dated May 6th, 2002, so I added McGrath on or before that date (although I'm pretty sure it was before). I really don't remember how I came up with McGrath, but I *think* it was the last name of a character on a show I watched at the time (I think it was one of those kid's cartoon but in 3D types of shows). In any case, McGrath was added. When I joined dA in 2003, I was Kira McGrath, hence my dA name. (When I joined back in '03, I'm pretty sure dA didn't distinguish capital letters in user names (I would have tried doing it because I'm anal like that), so that's why my user name is lower case and hyphenated to distinguish the first name from the last name.)

I want to draw your Teen Titans OC!

I would like to take this opportunity to say a few things (even though I have a pounding headache and have a day off tomorrow, I still feel the need to post this tonight).

1. I have said this before, or at least thought it to myself, but I'll state it here just in case: I am most inspired, most excited, most willing to create art when it is in praise of the Lord. I push that aside a lot in favor of drawing my DC universe (Teen Titans and Justice League) OCs. As much as I love developing my OCs and as much as I want to do a comic book of my story line for them, what I should be focusing on right now is a project that I have some (very rough) preliminary sketches for already. What?
Yes, that's right. For some reason, I just enjoy drawing other peoples Teen Titans OCs. Some of my watchers may have noticed me doing this already (drawing random people's TT OCs), but sometimes it's difficult to find OCs with good reference images. I do have a bunch of pages bookmarked for my own choices, but there's many I've missed/overlooked/decided against (usually due to their old date and the lack of them in their owner's gallery, indicating that the owner may not be interested in that OC anymore). In any case, before you get too excited, there are some rules.


Rules

1. You request an image by commenting on this journal (not any other journal, not any of my deviations, not my main page, and not by note, plzkthnx). You do not need to ask if you can request an OC, because that's the whole point of this journal (if anything that just makes everything more tedious with pointless comments).

2. Teen Titans original characters only. The OCs don't necessarily have to be on a Teen Titans team, but their main point of interaction in the DC universe has to be the comic or cartoon Teen Titans storyline. This means no OCs from any other fandom or self-created story (even if still within the DC universe); however the character can belong to any Teen Titans storyline (animated series, comic book). This also means no costume re-makes or gender bending of official Titans, as well as no "TTNG" (Teen Titans Next/New Generation), whether your own OC's children or children you created for official Titans.

3. This is not a guaranteed thing. I do have a life (which includes working 5 days a week), plus I'm one of those people who really needs to be in a drawing mood in order to want to draw. This is more of a "suggest an OC, and if I feel like it, I'll draw it" type of thing (sorry if that sounds harsh, but I can't force myself to draw). As such, there isn't a "slot limit" - if you make a request, I'll put you on the list (if anything, it gives me a bigger pool to choose from). I will try to draw for everyone who requests (because I guilt trip myself ), but just understand that it may take a while.

4. There is a maximum of three characters per image. You can only request one image at a time. If I finish your requested image, you may request another, but I will only draw a maximum of four OCs, and I will only draw any particular OC once. _{(Example: You have OCs A, B, C, and D. You request an image of A and B. I draw it and post it on dA. You can then request an image of C, D, or C and D. If you request C or D, you must wait 'til I finish the image before requesting the other OC, and after that fourth OC, you can't request anymore. If you request C and D, even after I finish the image, you cannot request any more images.)}

5. I probably will not draw your OC with any official DC characters. You can suggest it, but don't count on it - I will more than likely only draw your OC.

Why?

Okay, soooo...

I was working today, though not doing anything nearly difficult. I had been using the hand-held computer device (called a telxon) to scan some items in the back room when I came across a portable printer battery. I was walking to return it to the charger, when I felt a sharp pain shoot from the left side of my chest up to my scalp/brain. A few seconds later, there was a second pain like the first. But afterward, I was fine, except for the left side of my chest (my heart) felt a little weird, but I wasn't sure if it was real or just in my head since I had recently read a story in Reader's Digest about women's heart attacks and how they can be so non-dramatic that a women doesn't even realize she's having one because it just feels like a random pain that goes away, so I was kinda "ZOMGOZORS" in my head. But I only "noticed" the strange feeling when I thought about it, so more for the "in the head" theory. But then when I got home from work, something odd happened. First the tip of my pinkie (from the last joint to the tip of the finger) of my left hand felt kinda weird... like numb, not the tingly numb or completely numb, just less feeling than normal. Then it "grew" - my whole left hand, then also my forearm, and for a little bit up to my shoulder. PrismaColor Pencils
Details: Thick, soft-lead, professional quality colored pencils. There are 124 pencils total, including 2 colorless blenders and doubles of a few colors of which one pencil is on the short side (so the other one can replace it). Most of them are sharpened.
The original set is the boxed 72 set (the cool stand-up box, not the tins that they sell now), with more pencils added on (I bought them all separately at the RIT campus store). However, the original 72 set has been split up, as I rearranged the colors that the box contained. The extra pencils (52) are in a small white plastic bag, but I also made a nifty holder out of cardboard that holds 32 pencils. A few of the pencils are a little chewed on one end (darn cats), but they are still usable. I also have a 36 count Verithin set (again, in a stand box, not a tin). It wasn't long after that, couldn't have been more than a month, when I read 1 Corinthians Chapter 13. It made me realize that my choice had been wrong in a way. Now, 1 Cor. 13 is not saying that love is more important than faith in terms of salvation; one could be "the most loving person in the world," but faith in Jesus as the Savior is still necessary for salvation. What 1 Cor. 13 means is that, as Christians, if all our acts are without love as a base, then those acts are pointless. That's why Paul says that love is the greatest in this chapter.

What brought this to the forefront of my mind was some controversy surrounding another deviant, who shall remain nameless (for those of you who don't know, "deviant" refers to "a user of deviantART," not the dictionary definition). This deviant's gallery and journals revolve around Christian themes and messages. As a believer, I agree with most (I say most as I haven't read every journal or looked at every deviation) of the message that is being conveyed. Unfortunately, I have to disagree with some of the ways this deviant chooses to present their message and deal with their critics. Even as a fellow believer, looking at back-and-forth arguments between this deviant and those who disagree, it is easy for me to see how this kind of behavior turns people away from Christ. In this deviant's journals/arguments/replies, I have seen no attempts to understand the non-believer's point of view. Again, I have not read everything everywhere in this person's account, but this seems to be true for what I have seen. Every objection that arises is either blown off with a nonchalant reply or ignored entirely. It's one thing if you don't like debating with people, it's quite another if you act as if their objections are silly and inconsequential. Sure, some people are die-hard atheists, and it's likely that no matter what you say, they won't give Christ a chance, but that doesn't meant that their opposing arguments and viewpoints don't deserve a thoughtful response that tries to understand their point of view.

The idea is akin to expecting a smoker to quit cold turkey and not understanding the chemical addictions and daily habits that drive them smoke in the first place. In order to truly help a smoker to quit, first off it would have to be something they want for themselves, and then you could help by being supportive and making sure they stick to their quitting method, but also understanding that it is difficult, and that the desire for nicotine and the old habits will always be there. So, as a Christian, one can't just spout off Bible verses (especially without any sort of explanation or context) and expect someone to all of a sudden "see the light" and stop their argument. Obviously, salvation through Jesus is a free gift that each individual must decide for themselves whether or not to accept. Of course, that is in very plain terms. Some don't believe God exists, some believe that Jesus isn't the only "path" for "salvation," - to a Christian, it is seen as these people rejecting Christ's gift, but Christians also have to understand that that is not the viewpoint of a non-Christian. We as believers need to remember others' viewpoints so that when we discuss Christian views with non-believers, they might actually be able to relate to and understand what we are talking about.

What is necessary to do this? What embodies kindness, truth, compassion, empathy, justice, sympathy, morality, helpfulness, understanding, considerateness, and more? Why, love, of course. Pure love, the kind that God has, not the "love" that is thrown around casually these days. Of course, we'll never be perfect, and we will make mistakes, but what 1 Cor. 13 says to me is that wherever we go, whatever we do, we as Christians should base everything out of love. Love for God, as He loves us, and love for our fellow human beings, and a desire to show them the fraction of God's love that we are able to show them. Shouting "You're going to Hell!" from a street corner doesn't show love. It may be true, it may be grounded in faith in God, but it doesn't show the love that allowed us to be saved in the first place. IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT MY ARTWORK:
I work faster and better when I draw something I'm interested in.
I prefer drawing original characters (totally original or fandom-based original) over official characters/fanart.
I am much better at drawing females than males.
I will not mimic other styles: I will draw in my own style.
I don't like drawing extremely detailed things. This is why my drawings are very undetailed and my OC's clothing/costumes are always simple. However, I pay very close attention to details, and I try to come as close to a reference as possible. Examples of my ability to accurately recreate a character can be found here (with the original reference here) and here ("And you're the first one to draw the outfit correctly~!").
Most of my drawings are refined sketches/pencil outlines with no background. I HATE inking and almost never do it. I color when I'm in the mood to do it, whether it be traditionally or digitally. Occasionally, I may monochromatically (pencil) shade something.
