I think it is time I started an art blog. I know I have dA, but I feel like I get very little feedback there and it is almost not worth it anymore. I guess it is partly because I am a sketch artist and do not really do "refined" pieces... but isn't the whole point of an art community about dialogue and suggestions from other artists? I might as well have a blog and it might as well be a pink blog.

Anyway, to get it started I thought I should move a small selection from my dA gallery. Suggestions would be lovely.

I will probably still post things here as well, old habits die hard and, though frustrated, I do not give up that easily.

I plan to take advantage of my mother's scanner a lot over this vacation ahead. This means a lot of owed sketches and such will at last be posted... maybe?

Also, I made a rather large mixed media "painting" this morning using a Sharpie, watercolors, and crayons. It is called "Stars" ( after the Janis Ian song ) and I will be posting it as soon as I have a digital camera on hand. It's not the best work, I'm still figuring out how to make watercolors do cool things on purpose. ( I have a lot of awesome watercolor "mistakes" to scan too! )

Things I want to work on artistically:
-Watercolors!
-Mucha imitation powers activate!
-Actually getting somewhere in comic making...
-Illustrating a full fairy tale. ( as opposed to just making plans and never actually completing )

What I am doing with writing:
-OLIVIA! I would love some beta readers when I have it typed. Please help me get a hold of some grammar.
-Short stories. I have tons to type up and I promise to post most of them here.
-Therapy writing/"Trips to Colleen"
-Poetry. It will be in your inbox, even if you don't want it.

Am considering putting out another "for me" publication on lulu books. Will include some of the highlights in this year's writing and some sketches. No one will buy it and it will be up for free PDF downloads. It will not feature middle school poetry this time - exciting, yes?

Also... thinking about saving up for a laptop. Preferably one with WindowsXP. Any suggestions?

So... ummm.......

I HAVE BEEN WRITING A "NOVEL."

Okay, several novels. But the one I am here to talk about today is for younger peoples. I want illustrations. For reasons unknown, I actually would like someone else to draw them.

Usually, I am a bit more like "DUDE, I can so WRITE and DRAW at the SAME TIME!"- but I honestly think my art and my writing are going in different directions and it is time they both saw "other people."

Anyway, this story is about a young girl. She is probably eleven. Sometimes I think she is six, but apparently she is a little bit older than that. ( Some people have no idea how eloquent a six year old can be! ) She is loosely inspired by Little Red Riding Hood and Eloise. Basically, she is a little terror running about a fairy tale world.

You may have heard of her before, when she was fourteen. She is Olivia, she can be found, avec Theo, here: [link]

Luckily, now she is younger and has very little sense of romance. She still, in my head, talks with a "monster" voice/font. She still does not tie her shoes. She just is not chasing after Theo all the time, she would rather climb trees or steal his horse or something.

So, style-wise, I am looking for something less "Colleen pretends to draw realism" and more "HEY! This is Olivia! She's little and vaguely cartoony. This suits her!"

Olivia would greatly appreciate it. She might even stop running around my brain in a red poncho/hooded tunic for five seconds and be all "thank you" about it. Then she would steal Theo's horse. She likes horses because they like to run around as much as she does. Her hair is a massive blond tangle, because she is sticking it to the man. Brushing your hair and tying your shoes is conformity, fools!

Ask me for a sample of the book if you are interested! I cannot, really, pay for the illustrations at this point. ( I am bankrupt. ) BUT, I can probably swap favors or send you random surprises and arts in return. Eventually, providing I get a "real job" sometime soon, ( Dear Businesses in My Area, WHY have you not responded to my applications?! ) I would love to give monetary compensation for such efforts. Should such efforts be made.

I don't know, it seemed like a good due date?

I also forgot this part: A contest for which there will be a small surprise prize sent to the winner(s) by mail. IT WILL BE SILLY AND FUN, I PROMISE!

Ye ole contest information:

I would like YOU *strikes Uncle Sam pose* to draw ONE OR MORE of the characters from my comic-in-the-works, "Eleison". References can be found in my gallery in the Eleison folder. BEST FEATURE dA EVER CAME UP WITH. I LOVE FOLDERS.

ANYWAY, here is some more info on the characters:

Mikayla Darling: is twelve years old. She is the protagonist and she can see angels. Or so she says, she might just be crazy.

Mr. Jonathan L. Hall: teaches theology. May, eventually, be the Giles to Mikalya's non-violent Buffy. Has zero self-esteem as he is approaching 40ish and no one thinks he's groovy.

Margaret "Maggie" "Mags" Mitchell: is also twelve. And, yes, she is named after the author of "Gone With The Wind", although they actually have nothing in common. She is comic relief, mostly, and wears "hippie" pins on her uniform to tick Ms. Stacy off- even though Ms. Stacy terrifies her. Mags is a born rebel.

Stuart Blair: is a boy. I think he's eleven. And has slight violent tendencies, because no one wants to be named after Stuart Little and my old character Blair. FOR REALS.

Ms. Adeline Stacy: is probably a rare species of vampire that can take sunlight as long as they are dressed in awesome. Students and faculty a like fear her because she pays for everything and has tremendous power and, scariest of all, a beehive. Yay for being the St. Elliot's Academy chairwoman of DOOOOOOM.

Rebbecca "Becky" Chapel: is fifteen and a half, and therefor more adult than anyone ever. She is the RA for Mikayla and Mags dorm and has a long standing crush on Jonah... which, recently, has made her grades slip.

Jonah Wales: knows that his name is a pun. He also knows that no one will tease him for it because he oozes natural cool. Even Ms. Stacy finds it hard to tame his cool and knock him into submission. She can't even expel him for growing his hair out. Also, he is afraid of spiders. TELL NO ONE.

The Angels: have the best design ever. Also, they might not exist.

I plan to watch a bit every day up to the fourth.

Today, of course, is the day to really celebrate! THIS is the day Richard Henry Lee of Virginia's resolution on independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Very important stuff! Getting a legislative body to adopt such a radical thing is not something to be over looked.

To honor Mr. Lee, I dug out my "Founding Fathers" biography book and opened it to his biography for a brief refresher on his awesome. Then I listened to "My Name Is Richard Henry Lee" from "1776" on repeat for awhile. (Hey, it ain't accurate, but it is damn cool!)

At noon I headed to my first day of volunteer work at the Shelburne Falls Historical Society Museum. I gave three tours, located a special booklet in the "library"- and praised my limited knowledge of the Dewy-Decimal System, helped an Arms Academy Alum find her 1950 year book, and otherwise kept busy until four o'clock.

I could easily see myself working there long term. It was enjoyable to soak up knowledge AND be genuinely useful. I don't feel USEFUL at school and I don't particularly learn anything that could be called KNOWLEDGE when at a paying job. This is a happy in between for me.

To top off my day, I think I will read a chapter or two of "John Adams" or "Benjamin Franklin: An American Life."

(Anyone who wants to toss a good biography of Jefferson or Hamilton my way will have my eternal gratitude.)

Which, by the way, I am open to suggestions as to what sort of machine I should get. I have already decided firmly against another laptop for the time being. Unfortunately, I'm really not liking Windows Vista, as it apparently defines all things sucky. I liked WindowsXP well enough though. In fact, I miss it.

Cost, for now, matters very little as I don't really NEED to post my art right now or anything... and I am perfectly capable of typing things on the family computer as long as my siblings are not home.

P.S. :
This is also giving me the chance to finish all the request and other art I owe you all. Nothing increases producitivity like a lack of technology.

I really ought to stop naming these journal entries after whatever lyric is passing through my ears. Today's title comes from "Possession", the only Sarah McLachlan song I can stand at the moment. And by stand, I mean listen to repeditively.

Anyway, there is not too much to report. I am going to invest in some nice paper tomorrow so I can start taking "Snow White and Rose Red" more seriously. I spent last night and a good portion of this afternoon deciding how I wanted to adapt the story and decided that I wanted to play up the personalities of the characters, particularly the sisters, more than the original.

A lot of fairy tales did not bother with personality beyond the first encounter with the character. Cinderella was never more than "good and kind" and her stepsisters "were so mean it made them ugly"- that's it, bottom line. ( And, I do believe the prince is just described as "the prince"! Poor boy, he is nothing more than his title implies! )

I also have been working on the next few strips of "Eleison", but I don't think I will be uploading until I have a good stack of them to work with. ( This will, in theory, enable me to update on a schedule without having to worry if the next strip is ready. ) I really do love this story very much and can hardly wait to share it with you all.

Other works in progress include:
-VERY belated post-its for Merlin and BlueMoon
-A contest entry for Blue-Hawk
-"Born in the Wrong Century" entry that I am VASTLY overthinking. ( I am being overly realisitic and making myself a lower-middle class woman at the out break of the American Revolution. And I have a cold, so it is a little bit unpleasant.

But I LIKE V-day, contrary to popular belief. I know, shock and horror, the spinster likes the pink consumerism holiday.

While I don't believe that there needs to be a special day set aside for love, I have recieved proof today that it does help. My dad does not go out of his way to call his father on Christmas or do anything out there like that, but today he gave my mom a sweet, heart felt card and a box of choclates. Classic and cliche? Yes- but very, very welcome and needed considering my mom's life at the moment.

Sometimes it takes a little fire under your ass to get you motivated to do something you should be doing everyday- showing people that you love them.

Gosh, that was corny. It can just be "poke" if you want, or a smilely, I just can't tell if anyone is looking or if all those views are just me checking back over and over again.

Why? Because I am only on there when I have nothing better to do and will therefor, most likely, be more than happy to draw you things.

Commissions are something I do not really do, same with requests. I have a few requests from ages ago now that I am still working on and I do not want to get anymore in until I finish with those.

Trades are easy, I can whip them together, but often times requests and commissions get set on the backburner because, for whatever reason, they tend to involve more work.

That is all.

P.S.
So, yeah, busybusybusybsuy...... BORED.

The last, long awaited post-its will be posted this evening. IN COLOR. Because I was stupid and made them LATE and must make up for that somehow.

Been working on the last two designs for the comic and the first page... which I have restarted MANY times. I think I am finally getting the hang of it though, we'll see. I would like to get it going this weekend with at least two pages.

In writing news, my collection of ( partially horrid ) teenage poetry is finally assembled. Actually, it has been for awhile, I just kept hoping I would find one last notebook that apparently got lost in the move seven years ago. Anyway, if you want a copy... NOTE ME. I'll get it to you somehow. I just need to print out my copy and take it to Staples as soon as I have enough cash to afford printing and binding.
I thought about using Lulu books or some other self-publishing bookseller site, but I really do not feel like this collection is worth other people spending money on. It was a labor of love and angst, and it includes works from the seventh grade.

Also in the works: some prose. Of the kind I will actually allow myself to show on dA and not some private forum. It is a fairly old story, but I am in the process of rewriting it. There will be knights, ladies, a frog prince, a fan magazine, something like rock'n'roll, and some Freudian Little Red Riding Hood metaphors. I hope you all will take the time to read it- I promise not to be too wordy and smart... because I am not that wordy and smart anyway. "I only know enough to talk strangely", to quote a poem from the above mentioned poetry collection.

Lastly, ~Blue-Hawk-Dreaming and I are vaguely starting a story project using the characters from this old thing: [link] ...and some "new" characters. It will be marvelous and there will be many grand Indiana Jones-ish adventures in a world that is similar to our own, but not. So, yeah, watch out for that.
