What could be newer? this
new little bird
Not yet summer fat!
- Jack Kerouac

This new body of work is inspired in part by memory and also by Jack Kerouac’s Book of Haiku. His writing acts as a stylistic inspiration for my paintings, in that I also attempt to capture my own experiences in an evocative and simplistic manner, only with paint. The main motif throughout this series of works, as also in Kerouac’s haiku, are birds. They serve as a link to various memories, places I have traveled, a moment or day remembered.

My paintings are mainly acrylic and spray paint on canvas, featuring naturalistically rendered birds on mostly monochrome backgrounds. The works are small in scale, in an effort to create an intimate, personal feeling. I also find myself referencing a season, typically through color selections. This seasonal reference is traditional for haiku. I strive to evoke in a simple way the feeling of a time and place. The use of simple imagery relates to the brief, three line structure of the haiku.
