We are used to photos and images in a rectangle.

Why is that?

The eye actually sees things in a circle and two eyes see things in a funny fuzzy ellipse. Just like you reading this and the other text is out of focus and blurry...yes, read it again and think about it.

But really, why do we put images as rectangles?

Is it because film was in sheets at one time...then rolls?

There is no reason we can't have circles or whatever shape.

but we stick with rectangles.

Our monitors and displays are rectangles. Movies are extreme rectangles.

Biology actually prefers the circle.

Your eye is a circle....ok it's a sphere, but the image is circular.

One might think because of this natural thing, that art esthetics might favor the circle.
It sure seems to be a state of mind in photography with some sort of saturation of your senses when you actually capture some images.

What do I mean by this?

Here is the observation.

I take photos and do my normal thing and look at them. I like some shots more than others. The usual thing.

Months later, sometimes I look at them again and think. "Wow, I really like that. Why didn't I like it before?"

Could it be like a movie that you have watched seven times, not only getting sick of it, but seeing all the defects?

Does that happen with photos when you are taking them?

When you study a photo hard, trying to achieve that shot, does it just play out your senses till you are sick of it and just focus on the defects?

I'm thinking that actually might be the case.

If so, the trick is to make you mind see the photo as fresh no matter how much time you spent dwelling on it and photographing it.

Maybe this is an artists gift....

Other than taking some mind altering drug or hiding my photos for months, I don't know how to do it.

Emo denial

So the newspaper had a whole story about the EMO crowd. It talked about what the stereotypes are, what the music is like, how it originated.

But the thing I noticed that made me laugh, and seems typical of a lot of teens is, the denial aspect and the aspect that people treat them differently.

Well hello! Just like the Punks in the 1970s and 80s, and Goth crowd, when you dress dramatically, people are going to treat you differently. Why, because you dress like you want to be different. And I kinda thought many of you do want to be different?

Then comes the paradox. You want to be unique and different, but you dress like everyone else in the same group. I mean it's not subtle either. It looks like a dress code, so much so, that there is a clear list of what Emo kids wear. If you really wanted to be individual, you would dress with your unique style.

Then there is the denial. The newspaper had some dialog from people who dress that way, I have seen it here and other places. There are kids, who listen to the music, dress the style and then claim they are not Emo! Come on! If you are ashamed of it, don't dress like it, but at least be true to yourself and admit you are in the group. That is what bugs me. I thought the style and ideal was cool for a while but now hearing about all the whining that people are judging you, I have lost respect. I have lost respect because you are not being true to yourself when you are clearly dressing up according like a well defined group of people, listening to the same genre of music, and then claim you are not part of that group.

I don't remember the 80's punks denying their group affiliation, nor the Goths. But it sure seems a lot of Emo kids doing that.

Sure, you're going to say "People don't understand us." Well that is certainly true, and mostly because you really don't understand either.
