This month, AMC presented "The Prisoner". A six-part miniseries which is a reinterpretation of the original British 1960's cult television series that starred and was co-created by Patrick McGoohan.

Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ, The Thin Red Line) plays the role of Six; and two-time Oscar nominee Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code) co-stars as Two.

When I was younger, I used to stay up late to catch re-runs of the original series. So, I was curious how this remake would measure up. Having watched the entire series over the last three days, I have to admit, I wasn't overly impressed. The pacing was hard to follow, and at times, completely incoherent. "Surreal", I suppose, is the most appropriate (and entirely accurate) word I can think of.

If you've seen it, I'd like to know your thoughts. In my opinion, the best thing AMC did was to make the entire original series available free for your viewing pleasure. You can watch all 17 episodes from the 1967-1968 television show here: [link]

Enjoy!

CLUBS...

Journal CSS created by <img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/s/o/soundlessw.jpg" alt=":icon...

Section 1:
10,000 Page Views & Such

After being with dA for nearly two years now, I noticed today that I've reached over 10,000 page views. Not that this is any monumental feat; after all, some members have the ability to accumulate this many page views in a matter of days, but I do believe it's worth mentioning anyway.

As a full-time art instructor, my time is spent encouraging others to be creative, which is a wonderful way to spend your day, but it often leaves me feeling drained by the time I get home. dA has always provided me the ability to share, discuss, and draw inspiration from other like-minded individuals on a global scale, which in turn, fuels my own creativity and motivates me to pick up my camera or walk down the steps to my studio.
So, as a small token of my appreciation, I'd like to offer this small feature for some of my fellow deviants.
Summer has officially ended for me today and it's time to return to the classroom once again. Despite certain less than favorable changes in our school district brought about by hard economic times, I'm trying my best to remain optimistic. Since the arts are usually the first thing to be affected during such times, I'm also reminding myself to be grateful that I still have a job teaching a subject I so dearly love.

CLUBS...
 <img class="avatar" src="http://a.deviantart.net/avatars/4/b/4bstr4ct4...

In case you haven't noticed, I've been rather absent around here for the past several months. Other than making an occasional comment on a random deviation that caught my eye, I haven't contributed anything to dA. Quite simply, I needed some distance for awhile. If you've been around here for any length of time, I'm sure you understand.

I also put down my camera for longer than usual, but a recent visit from my good friend Troy inspired me to pick it back up again and go exploring. More often than not, these "explorations" quickly became thinly veiled acts of trespassing, but a friendly wave and a confident nod always let us slip by with no questions asked. Besides, it's these little indiscretions that make the event more memorable, right?

I am reminded that, as artists, we are always in constant need of inspiration. Whether it be in the form of a local art gallery, a glance through dA or a visit from an old friend, inspiration to fuel our creativity is essential and shouldn't be underestimated. After all, it is the simple act of being creative that lifts us from a mundane existence to one filled with wonder and awe.

It's good to be back!

CLUBS...

Journal CSS created by

In addition to my full-time teaching position, I've also picked up a part-time job working at a meat market early in the morning. I like the work and the few extra bucks it puts in my pocket, but I usually come home exhausted. Though I still set aside a few hours each Thursday evening to paint in my studio, I haven't been around here as much as I used to be. This place has always been such a great source of inspiration for me, so I feel like I've been rather negligent by not posting anything of any real significance for quite some time. I guess this is my way of saying that I'm still around, even if I'm not as energetic lately.

On a lighter note, I have been preparing for several upcoming solo shows for May and June. This will include a collection of my recent photographs, collages, paintings, and perhaps some pottery as well. Our team will be working on this initial piece from January 16-20, until I move on to sculpt in the international competition with my friends from Team Mexico/USA, January 21-24. Troy first picked up an ice chisel and began carving a few years back at Snowfest when we needed his help, and I'm happy to see him return. So, as a way of saying, "Thanks for freezing your ass off", I'm offering this feature of Troy's amazing photography. Enjoy!

CLUBS...

Journal CSS created by

During that time, I've managed to accumulate just over 5,240 page views, and (more importantly) I've also managed to make some wonderful connections with like-minded individuals from all over the globe. This ability to share, discuss, and draw inspiration from, has been a benefit to both me and my work.

So, as a small token of my appreciation, I'd like to offer this small feature for some of my fellow deviants. Thanks for your support and friendship over the months. This year, I'll only be doing one event-- Zehnder's "Snowfest", in Frankenmuth, Michigan, but it'll prove to be a busy week nonetheless.

Starting Sunday, January 18, my partner Sam Licavoli and I will be carving a large exhibition piece for WNEM TV 5. [link] The sculpture will actually be a working studio set which will be rigged to broadcast the evening news from during the weekend of Snowfest, January 23-25. You can check out the quick concept sketch below. To my knowledge, this has never been done before.

We'll have around three days to complete this sculpture before we meet up with our other two teammates to begin carving for team Mexico/USA in an international competition. This will begin Wednesday, January 21 and conclude Saturday morning, January 24. Measuring 20x10x10 feet, international blocks at this event are rather large.

While I'm carving, I'll also be coaching four of my art students in a high school level competition, Thursday thru Friday, which means that I'll be bouncing back and forth allot. If you're from mid-Michigan, and you have experience working with kids and some knowledge of sculpture, plus enjoy standing outside in below freezing temperatures from 8am-5pm, feel free to drop me a note if you'd like to help coach. I'm serious!

If you happen to be in the area, please stop by and pay us a visit. We'll be carving in the parking lot of Zehnder's Restaurant, just across the street from the town's glockenspiel. [link] And remember, there's no such thing as poor weather, just poor clothing!

CLUBS...

Journal CSS created by

Halloween is just around the corner, which means it's time to bust out the pumpkins once again! However, instead of carving the same old tired jack-o'-lantern this year, why not try something new? Using nothing more than a few clay ribbon loop tools and a paring knife, sculptor Ray Villafane offers a unique alternative. You can find his easy to follow step-by-step tutorial, plus a bunch of other cool looking pumpkin pics (like the one below) here: [link]

About nine years ago, I first stumbled upon Ray's pumpkin carving technique when somebody gave me a video tape featuring Ray giving a demonstration on a local cable television program. At the time, he was working as a high school art teacher in Bellaire, MI. As I teach art in a rural school district, it's always easy to get my hands on a lot of pumpkins, so I quickly adapted Ray's technique. Pumpkin carving has now become part of my curriculum each October.

Since that time, Ray has quit teaching to create Villafane Studios, and has become a full-time sculptor. His clients include McFarlane Toys, Bowen Designs, Sideshow Collectibles and DC Direct. While checking out his pumpkin carving tutorial, make sure you also have a look at some of Ray's amazing looking toys and collectibles. His work is truly inspiring.

*If you're able to, make sure you tune in tomorrow (10/26/2008) at 8:00pm EST to see Ray carve pumpkins on the Food Network Show, "Challenge". He'll be one of four carvers competing for a $10,000 cash prize!
*UPDATE (10/27/08): If you missed it, Ray actually took first place and the cash prize that evening. Congratulations, Ray!

Happy Halloween, everybody!

Having read Chuck Klosterman's book, "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs", I was inspired to create a new (yet short) artist feature. In the book, Klosterman states that he asks 23 questions everybody he meets in order to decide if he can really love them.
For the sake of this entry, I've randomly selected Question #19. The first five (5) people to respond to this question with a reasonably coherent answer will receive three (3) features of my choosing. So here's the question...

Your best friend is taking a nap on the floor of your living room. Suddenly, you are faced with a bizarre existential problem: This friend is going to die unless you kick them (as hard as you can) in the rib cage. If you don't kick them while they slumber, they will never wake up. However, you can never explain this to your friend; if you later inform them that you did this to save their life, they will also die from that. So you have to kick a sleeping friend in the ribs, and you can't tell them why.
Since you cannot tell your friend the truth, what excuse will you fabricate to explain this (seemingly inexplicable) attack?

1. ~scheinbar

2. eggymintun

3. ~Frenz1986

4. ?

5. ?

 <a href="http://www.deviant...

OK, no more "Feature Tag"! I confess to being a bit obsessive compulsive about completing things, so since I could only get 7 out of 17 dA tags, I've gone ahead and just turned this into a feature of 20 dA friends.
Next month, a group of artists and myself will once again be participating in Marshall Fredericks' well-known "Saints & Sinners" annual gala, to be held at the Arbury Fine Arts Center of SVSU. On Friday, October 3rd, an Italian themed "Saints, Sinners and Sopranos" event will feature Italian cuisine, wine, music and art. As always, the highlight of the evening is the silent art auction, which I've donated a piece for (tax write off, of course). Proceeds from this auction will go to benefit the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum. For more info, please visit [link]

On an unrelated note, I received an invitation in the mail yesterday from The Tourist Office of Valloire, France. I have the opportunity to form a team and represent the USA in an international snow sculpting contest this January 20th-23rd. I would love to go, but I'll also be carving snow the following week at Zehnder's "Snowfest", in Frankenmuth, MI, not to mention I'd need permission to take some extra time off from teaching (if only I had three months off during the winter instead of the summer). The application deadline is November 17, so I guess I better get busy. For information about this event, and a really cool (no pun intended) video, please visit [link]

Cheers!

I'm just curious... Recently, someone told me about myartspace, and I must confess, I never heard of it before. Is anyone else familiar with this community? Is it comparable to, or even better than dA? After taking a quick tour, it seems like a decent place to network with fellow artists and post work. Even better, I found no traces of manga or anime bullshit, so I'm guessing that it's more suited for mature users.

So, if you have the time, please check this site out and let me know your thoughts.
Wow! I can see by my last entry that I haven't posted anything new in almost two months. I guess I've been a little distracted lately.

For the past several weeks, I've been laying the groundwork for a new project in which I'll be collaborating with a synesthete from my home town of Madison, WI. In case you've never heard of this unique condition, synesthesia is a perceptual condition that results from a bleeding-over of the senses. An accomplished and talented musician, Chris is also one of my closest childhood friends. For an interesting article about synesthesia and an interactive interview with Chris, please follow this link: [link] As of now, Chris and I plan on doing a series of large paintings this summer based on his perceptions.

Last January, I finally completed the storyboards for the upcoming film, "Sex Drive" for Summit Entertainment. Currently this film is in post-production and is scheduled for release sometime in October. Among the cast are James Marsden, Clark Duke, and Seth Green. The director, Sean Anders, is another childhood friend of mine. Apparently, I enjoy working with friends! Though the studio still has many of my best sketches, I do plan on posting some of what I have in my Scraps in the coming week.

And lastly, while visiting my family in WI last week, I purchased a brand new Nikon D300! This is a beautiful DSLR, and a real joy to use. I suppose this camera can be considered both a distraction and an indulgence for me! Now, I'm on the look out for what Cartier-Bresson called "the decisive moment."

Let the flames begin!

Clubs...

After being gone for six days, reality hit hard Wednesday morning when I discovered that it was mid-quarter and I suddenly needed to have all my grades submitted. I also came home to water dripping from my basement ceiling because the water line from the ice-maker in the refrigerator upstairs had somehow broken. Reality, it seems, is not always pleasant.
The Festival du Voyageur (literally translated as Festival of the Traveler) was a wonderful experience. This 10-day event is held in the Winnipeg's French Quarter, and is Western Canada's largest winter festival. The event celebrates Canada's fur trading past and her unique French heritage and culture through entertainment, arts and crafts, music, exhibits and displays. While we carved snow in front of Fort Gibraltar for four days, festival-goers flooded through the park, many of which were wearing period clothing. I was also lucky enough to be present in Manitoba for the first ever Louis Riel holiday last Monday!
The snow carving event was unique in that it wasn't a competition, but instead, a symposium. This means we weren't carving for placement, but instead, for the pure joy and fellowship of the art itself. Whereas competitions can often be stressful, the symposium was a wonderful, relaxing change of pace. If given the opportunity, I would definitely return next year.
Our three-man team decided to carve a voyageur thinker as a homage to the famous sculpture by Rodin. We thought the toque, boots and sash were uniquely appropriate for the festival.
Special thanks to the organizers of the event, especially Gary Tessier, for making sure we were all well taken care of. I'd also like to express my gratitude to all the event chauffeurs who made themselves available to us night and day so we could travel freely around Winnipeg. And lastly, thanks to Roger LaFrenière, the event photographer, for opening up his home and studio to all us carvers Monday evening. Roger, your party was the perfect ending to an amazing week!
Please feel free to look through my scrapbook for more pictures from this event.

As part of a four man team representing the USA/Mexico, we carved on the international side of the competition. We competed against four other teams, including Canada, the Netherlands, Mexico and the USA. Having begun Tuesday afternoon (1/22/08) and finishing on our deadline of 10 am on Saturday morning (1/26/08), I'm happy to report that our team took two awards; People's Choice and 2nd Place.
On a more personal note, I'm also pleased and honored to be the recipient of the "Ohm Award". Having been nominated for this award by numerous sculptors, the Ohm is the highest award a sculptor can receive at Snowfest. Essentially, an Ohm award winner embodies the qualities of a sculptor of exceptional quality and merit, and one who promotes the art of snow carving in a positive way.
If you're interested, please visit my scrapbook for more pictures from the event, or you can visit the Zehnder's Snowfest link: [link]
Now that Snowfest has been completed, I am currently gearing up for an international snow carving symposium in Winnipeg the second week of February called The Festival du Voyageur.
Starting tomorrow morning, I will be carving with my friends from Team Mexico on the international side of the competition. Measuring a staggering, 10x10x20 feet, our four-man team will have until Saturday (1/26/08) at 10am to complete our sculpture. We'll be carving against sculptors from all over Europe, Asia, and North America. Though I haven't seen any sketches, I'm told it will be polar bears on top of floating icebergs, with seals and fish swimming under the water line. We're also going to attempt to make the entire iceberg appear to be resting on one very small sharp point from the front. We'll see...

Starting Wednesday afternoon (1/23/08), I also plan on working with my three-man team to carve a more modest 10x6x6 state side block. Our idea will be a kneeling arch angel holding a sword. This means that I'll be working on two blocks simultaneously. I suppose this means that I like a challenge, or I'm completely mad.

What makes snow sculpting a particular challenge is the uncontrollable element of the weather. If the temperature rises, there's very little you can do but cover your piece with a tarp and come back to carve through the night. It can be very discouraging when you feel like you're trying to shape a giant slushie. However, with temperatures forcasted to be below freezing all week, I'm feeling very optimistic. Not to mention, I've also acquired a brand new set of ice chisels which I'm really anxious to try out!

See you next week!

Yesterday I got together with my teammate, Sam, to sharpen our tools and work on our design for an upcoming event the last week of January in Frankenmuth, MI. "Snowfest" draws sculptors from all over the world and is one of the largest events of its kind in North America. [link] This year, my three-man team and I will be carving on the State side with about 18 other teams, though there is a possibility that I will also be helping out my friends across the street on the International side from Team Mexico too.
"Why do you carve snow?", is a question I hear quite frequently. Most people simply can't understand why anyone would be willing to endure long hours and frigid weather conditions carving something that will eventually disappear. Why invest the time and effort into something that has no permanence? A Buddhist monk may be asked the same question when he takes days to create a mandala out of colored sand, only to sweep it away once it has been completed.
In the case of the Buddhist, he would tell you the point is to embody a spiritual experience fleetingly in a work of art. The mandala reminds us that one day, we all will die. It reminds us to think of other living beings compassionately in this impermanent life we have.
I believe the same message can be applied to snow sculpture. Like the sand in the mandala, and the snow in a sculpture, life is constantly flowing away. We cannot cling to this life, but the impermanence of life, like the nature of the snow itself , is what makes it more beautiful.

I'm pouring over a newly acquired gift today; "The Jim Morrison Scrapbook", by James Henke. As a long-time listener of the Doors, I find this book extremely fascinating. Many years ago, I had read several books on Morrison, including "No One Here Gets out Alive", by Jerry Hopkins, "Light My Fire: My Life With the Doors", by Ray Mansarek, and "American Night", a collection of poems by Morrison himself. Yet the scrapbook is different. It's actually a collection of over twenty removable reproductions from Morrison's life. Within the pages, you can pull out handwritten poetry, lyrics, artwork, letters, and photographs. Some of the more touching mementos include Morrison's report card from kindergarten, a handwritten copy of his first poem, and a typed letter from Admiral Morrison to the Florida Probation and Parole Commission commenting on his son's arrest for indecent exposure. It even contains a 60-minute CD of interviews and unreleased spoken word poetry which I haven't even listened to yet. I find it to be a wonderful, intimate look into the life of a true rock-and roll icon and modern poet.
Of Morrison, Henry Rollins says, "He was an incredibly heavy and complicated guy and that's why the music and the man remain timeless." While Iggy Pop remarks that the Doors are "The only rock art band that was ever worth a damn." Regardless of how you feel about Morrison, there's no denying that after only 27 short years of life, he managed to have a tremendous impact on the world of music.

I thought I should throw in a quick bio about myself. After looking through my modest gallery, it's evident that my style as well as my choice of mediums are rather eclectic. I've been a practicing artist and visual arts educator for over ten years now. As an artist, I primarily make my living as a teacher, but I also spend time exhibiting and doing some freelance work in my spare time. I find that I draw inspiration from other artists as well, that's why I'm glad I stumbled upon this website. Cheers!

Clubs...
