With the holidays comes vacation time for me! I'll have nearly 2 weeks straight off work starting Saturday afternoon. I've been drawing like crazy and have quite a few projects I'm working on. I'm taking a break again from the #ShinXChange to focus a bit more on my own work but I hope to join back in next month.

I've also joined the group #DragonArtists for dragon lovers. Thanks to =Shinerai who nudged me in their direction. If you love dragons it's really the place to join! I can't thank everyone enough for checking out my art and adding it to their favorites!

As many of you know my fiance and I live at Fort Hood. The whole army base is locked down. The barracades are up. No one is allowed in or out. The phones are jammed for the most part and calls are nearly impossible. The whole ordeal happened across the street from where my fiance and roommate work. Yeager is home safe with me and can't get back on post with the rest of the unit. My fiance Ski is stuck on base near by three of the shooting locations. Last I heard at 2pm while this was all going on that he was safe and trying to account for the where abouts of all his soldiers. 12 are dead and 31 wounded was the last update and we dont' know if any are our friends or from Ski's unit yet. We have reports of at least 5 locations on the base where people were shot. All the local schools are locked down too. People living in on-base housing have been instructed to stay inside and close their ventilation systems. Basically this is being treated as an unofficial terrorism attack.

One shooter has been identified as an Army Major who worked as a psychiatrist in the military hospital and a recently converted Muslim. He was killed in the gunfire. There are other shooters unidentified as of now. The buildings attacked were centers used for training soldiers preparing for deployment and where they received help after returning from deployments. We are currently waiting for more news from the general and the names of the killed and wounded released.

Update: As I was writing this I just spoke with Ski. He is fine but his phone is dying because he's letting his soldier use it to call their families. Luckily he has one fo the few so far that haven't been getting cut off and disconnected. Everyone is locked down in basements and inside the buildings.

As was suggested by `FantasyStock and $Moonbeam13 I decided to join in on self-promotion month. Granted October is almost over btu there's still time to get yourself out there for the dA world to see!

1. Who are you?
:love:I'm an east coast girl currently living in central Texas with my fiance and our absolute zoo of animals. He's in the army and I'm well used to living the military life as difficult as it may get at times. I work as a Veterinary Technician at a local animal hospital and I love it! Animals are my life and generally I like them a lot more then people. I'm also a huge tomboy. If there's a sport to play or adventure to go on you can sure count me in. I don't mind getting my hands dirty.

2. What is your artistic passion?
I love drawing dragons. They seem to be my calling but I'm also a huge fan of beauty in nature. Texas is awesome for stunning skies and striking sunsets. Tattoos I think are the ultimate dedication to permanent art. As you can tell I have passion in a lot of different areas but dragons tend to be my main focus.

3. Why did you get into art?
My mom is a very skilled artist and always encouraged me to explore my own talents at a young age. The feeling of accomplishment I get from completing a piece is amazing. The drive to constantly improve and possibly get some recognition for my work beyond friends and family keeps me going besides my own personal satisfaction. it doesn't matter the medium, I'll give anything a try and love the varying ways to produce a piece of art.

4. How do you inspire yourself?
Anne McCaffery's books area big part of my inspiration. The world of Pern has endless possibilities. I also get inspired by the world around me. My pets make awesome models for new poses and there's never a shortage of suggestions coming from my friends. I like looking at he work of people I admire. It drives me to keep drawing and work harder to pick up the techniques I'm lacking in. Music is great for any artist's block. I just blast some hardcore or punk and it gives me the motivation to get to work and really focus on a task.:headbang:

5. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
In five years my fiance and I will be married (well much sooner then that) and hopefully we'll have a house of our own. I'll still be working at a veterinary clinic while I go to school part time to finally become a Veterinarian. I'm wishing by that point that I can keep doing my art as I am now and possibly making some money from it.


I don't have a portfolio yet but here's some thumbs of my better work.

I've been neglecting my art horribly so far this year. The stress of my fiance being deployed and trying to settle back into normal life when he came home in July has been rough. Honestly I got lazy and uninspired the past 9 months. It was easier to come home and do nothing or work my ass off at my job then be creative by any means. Depression doesn't help matters either. Just when I though I had it under control, all my favorite hobbies were totally ignored. For me that's the biggest sign that depression's hitting.

Now Ski's been home nearly a month and a half. I'm a lot happier obviously and feeling more inspired every day. It took a few weeks before I could find the focus to write again and the urge to draw has just started. I'm managing to balance work, college, time with Ski and my hobbies again. It's always a good sign when the voices of your RP characters start speaking up and demand that you sit down to write. Now I'm carrying a small sketch pad around the house. Anytime I catch the cats in a funny sleeping position I draw it out. They're amazing help when it comes to breaking out of my normal stiff dragon poses.

Music is a miracle worker! It's impossible to stay down when you've got such great tunes to get you through the day. Music makes me happy, especially when it's live. Thank you so much to my little brother Madison and army buddy Hare for introducing me to some amazing new punk and hardcore bands. With them I've passed my 9 months alone rocking out and heading to every concert I can hit in a 100 mile radius of home. They helped the time pass by quicker. Since Ski's been home we've had an awesome time seeing our friends Ember play and even got to see Mayhem Fest this year! I'll always be a CTHC girl at heart! I grew up following the bands from tiny venues to national shows and I doubt that will ever change as I get older.

Thank you to my friends and family who know me well enough when times get dark. They're the people who give me a good slap and drag me out of the house to have fun again.

The future?
For art, I'm currently working on some new dragon sketches inspired by my sleeping kitties. I want to keep developing my skills and finally get some good use out of the tablet my parents got me for my birthday. Embreth's reference was just the beginning of the level I'd like to achieve and surpass with my art. Mixing drawn dragons and real photos of people is very hard to pull off but that one piece is one of my proudest moments. I have no shortage of dragons to draw and ideas rolling around in my head.

I have a lot of tattoo work to get started on too. I have a tattoo project for my dear friend Cass that I can't wait to sit down and work on. Ski has given me free reign of designing half of his body too. I'll be working with our tattoo artist Roman on getting everything down on paper and inked into Ski's skin.

As for the rest of life, I'm currently in my second semester of college for my second degree. I got stuck on my English essays for months but I'm made a bit of progress. I just really hate structured writing with 50 million pre-writing steps.

Our furry crew has grown. We still have our three cats (Syndher, Hayze and Riley) and snake Elly. She's finally shedding and eating regularly again. Our newest editions are Kiira my sable German Shepard pup and Rascal, Nick's husky pup who lives with us. Kiira is the half sister to my black Shepard Riddick. Buddy and Tank are still hanging around being the always lovable lazy boys. They both have finally filled out and look like solid dogs for once instead of lanky awkward adolescents. Tank tips the scale at over 100lbs now!

I'm still the head technician at a local animal hospital. I've got a great crew to work with and the surgeries I assist with every day keep life very interesting. Ski gets out of the Army next Marc and is headed to the police academy. We're planning on getting married in the coming months and starting to save up for a house.

Life is good right now and I can only hope it continues to stay that way!

This new year came up quick. The holidays were rather lonely spending them by myself with the pets but I did get to talk to Ski a few times. I'm working on a list of resolutions like I usually do which I'll post later. While I was home in Connecticut I started a lot of drawing I never expected to have the time to do. I'm doing reference sheets for all my dragons at Arolos Weyr. Since I can't draw people I may just include a silhouette for size comparison and will eventually add in the rider's pets too. There's a ton of new music I've been listening to and have managed to get all my friend's hooked on too.

All of the plans that have been made over the past few months have been torn to shreds. With only 24 hours notice my boyfriend/fiance was deployed to Afghanistan. He is non-deployable but the Army doesn't care if he can walk, they want him fighting. The med-board that was supposed to get him out of the Army was rejected and he was put on the first plane out. We scrambled over the day we had to get all our affairs in order so I can handle everything alone over the next 6+ months. Our last moments together were supervised because he was a huge risk for going AWOL. When the Army screws you over too many times sometimes the only option is to run. He didn't this time.

I've dealt with deployments before. I was married to a soldier for nearly 3 years and I know all too well how the Army works. Normally there are months and nearly a year to prepare. The rest of the unit had been deployed in July so I am happy that my boyfriend has a shorter time to deal with but he can barely walk. A shopping trip to Walmart has him limping for days. There is nothing left of the ligaments and tendons that hold his knee together. The hardest part is knowing the deployment is viewable on video. MSNBC is following Viper Company through all the battles, injuries, deaths and weapon malfunctions.

So we're not going out to dinner this weekend like we planned on, not picking up the loan so we can drive home to Connecticut for Thanksgiving. He's gone now and I'm managing to find some way to go home alone. The loneliness is starting to settle in. Friends are stopping by to see how I am and help around the house but it doesn't stop the huge weight I feel in my chest and lack of motivation to do anything. I'm fighting what feels like the beginning of depression. I can't have him worrying about me, he needs to take care of himself.

I have animals to take care of, an animal hospital to run and school to finish but right now I don't want to do any of it. I spent the day drawing and finishing my ShinXChange piece. I haven't even gotten dressed yet but I'm hoping some music gets me up to doing something other then sitting around letting the loneliness sink in.

Yes, I'm not a famous artist by any means. I'm learning every day and trying to develop my skills into something more impressive. I thank everyone who takes the time to check out my art, favorites it or watches.

When I posted my latest WIP I got some immediate responses. Of course I went to look up their pages and see what kind of art they did. One guy who favorite my picture was just plain creepy. His whole page is full of pictures of his own cock and whoever was possibly unknowingly sleeping beside him. It looks like he practically plops the camera in his lap to show everything off to the world. His journal spouts off about how it's art and not porn but I think this guy crosses the line. I don't even want to thank him for the favorite, wanting absolutely nothing to do with him or ever seeing his page again.

Yes the nude body can be a beautiful thing and has been a staple in art forever but there is a huge difference between a stock model, photographs with thought put into lighting and mood, as opposed to this guy's without a second thought crotch shots.



On a much happier note I'm working on my piece for the Inner Demon contest. I've been curious about other types of art lately so I'm trying my hand at a little bit of photomanipulation and incorporating stock pictures into this entry. I also still want to try drawing a stained glass piece. I haven't figured out how to make the colors look like glass yet on GIMP but I've figured out a few other cool tricks.

My puppy piece for the other contest didn't win but it was still very much worth trying. I had fun practicing digitally coloring.

A very unfortunate event has hit close to home. A fellow Deviant found a few blogs filled with art stolen from other artists with no regard for our rights of ownership. Not just a few pictures but hundreds. I recognized nearly half of the stolen pieces as belonging to artists I watch and admire. Many of the pictures were cropped to hide the artist signatures yet on many others it could clearly be seen who the original artist is.

These people are claiming these pictures as their own. In an effort to keep my art safe (though I still wonder if it's worth stealing), I'm reloading everything I can with a watermark added. I urge everyone to do the same. At least if our art is marked we can prove ownership should something this horrible happen again.

My folders will be shuffled around in an effort to help me keep track of just what I have marked and have not. A lot of my older pieces may be removed too.

I'm definitely sticking with the water color pencils. I'm quite proud of the results (the increase in positive comments helps too). I may still mess around with GIMP doing some digitally edited versions from time to time but it seems I'm back to my roots of being a traditional artist.

Who's it gonna be? Who will land my page at 1000 views?

I see the other artists with thousands upon millions of views and watchers. Quite intimidating really. I'm no where near that caliber but I'd like to thank the people who do take interest in my art. I'm not new by any means to the art world but DA has given me reason to take it more seriously and work towards growing and transforming as an artist. I loved drawing Kaleeko's dragon and I can't wait to have another piece started for the contest winner. Remember you've got to send me a screen shot for proof.


Since I like the way my water color art has turned out better then slaving over the computer all day I may very well stick to it. I've been practicing by redoing a few older pieces and hopefully I can finish all the works in progress very soon (meaning something new will be finished this weekend at least!.


On another note, I DON"T WANNA GO BACK TO WORK! Yep, I sent this out during my hour and a half lunch break. Thursdays suck for the pure fact that I work a full 12 hours. We're short handed today giving me tons more running around and patients to juggle then I prefer. Hopefully keeping busy will make the time go by fast...

:iconkaleeko: Kaleeko finished her commission for me and I'm so sorry I hadn't a chance to say something sooner. Her piece with my character's dragon Blanth came out beautiful! She even added in Draken's canine companion Noble. All are from the RPG Arolos Weyr. Yes, I'm a Pern addict. =) The perfectionist in me combined with some birthday celebrations and the flu have slowed down my piece on her gold dragon but after many sketches I should be at least start painting it tonight and hopefully be done in a couple days.




I had an awesome birthday up in Austin. We went ice skating for the first time in years though I'm sad to say my stamina is not what it once was when I was playing hockey constantly. I finally fed my craving of dolmas (stuffed grape leaves) and got to do some shopping. Looks like Austin is going to become a more frequent hang out for us in the future.

Yes the contest is still going on, only about 100 more views to go...

I'm on an artistic roll right now. After a warm up picture with my water color pencils the other day I'm working like crazy. Hopefully it'll last and I can finish all my projects.

I've got a small following I'm quite proud of and hopefully as I produce more work that too will grown. The page view numbers are slowly but steadily creeping up there so I figured it's time do to my first contest. The person to send me a screen shot proving they are my 1000th visitor gets a custom drawn dragon by me. If number 1000 is a no show I'll of course accept 1001 and so forth.

Other big news is my birthday of course! It's exactly two weeks away and no big deal most of the time but this is the first time in four years there's going to be February 29th! Yes, I'm a bona fide leap year baby. This year will be my 6th (technically 24th) birthday. I do a lot of my art on weekends but don't expect any on this one. My boyfriend has planned something very special for me so we'll be off to Austin for the weekend. No Computer or internet but I'm excited. There've been promises of real ice skating and frankly this hockey player has been going through ice withdrawal in hot as Texas.

I'm in a dragon drawing kind of mood lately. Life has been pretty stressful and somehow I can find the time to focus more on my art especially when I'm angry and frustrated. Instead of taking a week per picture I managed to do two this weekend.

Lots has changed since August when I last wrote here. I've got a house of my own now off the military post. I won't be moving home to Connecticut for a couple years but there are some things making the stay worth it. I'm back on track with college and nearly through my first semester of Veterinary Technician. The drawing itch is getting strong again. There have been a few unfocused attempts but it's getting better. I have a feeling someone is getting me a new sketch book and art supplies for Christmas =) Life is slowly settling down into something more normal and quite enjoyable. I even have a plan for the future, one that gets me right to where I belong for once.

With all the good there's always something bad to accompany it. Tank my beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback / Rottweiler / Mastiff mix goes in for surgery today. He's not even two and plagued by hip dysplasia. After getting out of the yard last week and caught by the police he won't stop limping so I think more damage has been done. I won't be monitoring the surgery myself but I will be in the room assisting.

With everything crazy going on there's been an addition to the family. His name's Riddick and he's a full blood German Shepherd pup. He's one of the smartest pups I've ever trained and doing quite well for only being 9 weeks old. I've gotta work on picking out a pedigree name for him eventually though the big news this week is his ears finally stood up!



Horrible picture I know but it's impossible to get him to hold still long enough to take any photos.

It's been a while since I made an update and even longer for some artwork. Life has been crazy lately with my best friend's daughter in the hospital for the past two months, a new job and divorce in the works. I'm moving back to Connecticut in the next few months to start over from Mom and Dad's house. All in all I'm in a decent frame of mind and things seem to be going my way.

Maybe it's because Texas is only good for taking pictures of clouds, but that's what I've been up to lately. Crazy thunderstorms, rainbows and funky cloud formations have filled up my camera. Now it's just a matter of posting them.

Ozzfest San Antonio was this last weekend. It was a first for Derek and (counting fingers) fifth for me but the first one we could both drink at. We missed Hatebreed playing but I got to hang with Jamie Jasta anyway. He sure didn't expect to see someone from his home town in Texas.

I've had the urge lately to draw out the dragons, firelizards and such belonging to my Pern RPG characters. That I can handle, the missing piece is I'd love to include my characters in these pictures. I can't draw people to save my life!

It's hard to know exactly what a character looks like in your head, play with them for years but not be able to get that person down on paper. Draken my first character that's still going strong at Arolos has been played in Pern RPGs for over 10 years. I can tell you every scar, scratch and mark on her body like it was my own but can't get her drawn. I've been watching some of the stock picture artists and have seen that people use their models and make them into drawings, I just have no clue how.

I'm not sure how all the DA lingo works but if someone would be kind enough to help me with my characters I'll draw my little heart out in return.

FINALLY!!! I've sat down for the past two days and put some serious effort into figuring out how to use layers in GIMP to improve my sketches. I can't tell you how long I've had the program and had no clue how to use it. I'm still doing simple things, mostly outlines, blurring and layer work. Now if only I can finally install Photoshop and learn to use it (Bryce too!)

I decided after 5+ years of drawing my dragons and firelizards the same way, it's time for a redesign. I'm back in the fantasy drawing kind of mood. I've got the urge to redraw and edit damn near everything I've ever drawn. Having a brand new set of Farber-Castell water color pencils helps.

Life overall has been good despite some HUGE changes. I got fired from my Veterinary Technician job and am currently looking for a new one. I'm working on catching up with college work. All As so far! I've been making some cash babysitting for friends which gives me plenty of time to draw. Summer has some big plans ahead. Ozzfest and weekends at the lake.

Leave me some love! I don't mind suggestions on my art. Theres some things I just get stuck on. I've been diving into the tutorials, especially for dragons and wolves so expect more of those subjects soon. Art is just like getting back on a bicycle, I'm just a little rusty.


I realize I really, really suck at commenting people back and I'm sorry. I'm putting in a lot more effort, especially for those of you who take the time to look at my work. You have no idea how much it means to me that someone is paying attention.

At least when I feel like I can't write, I have other hobbies to turn to. I got myself a bigger drawing pad and purse so there's no excuse for me to have everything with me. I've been working on a few different projects. I did finally finish Scott's tattoo commission, though it may take some redrawing before I'm 100% happy with it. (He wants less color). I've been watching a lot of cartoons lately. Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, and Samauri Jack mostly. Luckily it's gotten me away from just working on tattoos. It can get boring especially when I'm stuck. Photoshop 8 (I think) came in the mail from my mom. I haven't gotten it installed yet, hopefully this weekend.

Lately you'll never see me without a drawing pad, pencils and some Sharpies. I've reverted back into tattoo drawing mode and now's the time everyone wants one from me. I've got to go out and buy another sketch pad today since I'm blowing through drawings and ideas so quickly. I've got one exsisting tattoo to work around for Scott and damn near Derek's whole body to draw out besides working on my own body of constant work in progress.

Mom's mailing out my birthday box which I should have towards the end of the week. it'll have all my work from back home in Connecticut for me to post up here. My gallery won't look so pathetic soon enough and I'll actually have a real showing of my varried talents.

On another not so happy note, I'm missing my husband bad. It's half way point in this deployment. I'm obsessed with keeping myself busy so it doesn't hurt as much. I'm not all depressed and mopey. I function quite well on my own between work, school and hobbies. I've got some awsome friends who keep me busy and from falling down a black hole but as well as I've adjusted it doesn't stop me from missing him a lot especially when everything else in life is going so well.

I finally got my scanner up and working! It's about time. I've uploaded a few of the drawings I've been drying to get on here. I'll do cleaned up versions minus the eraser smudges and what not later. It's time everyone could see what I can do by hand instead of just on the computer.
