I think I've actually completed my personal goal of finishing ten knitted items. I need to sort through things, count, get photographic proof, etc., but I have finished ten things, but I'm not altogether sure.

My thanksgiving was marvelous. The few relatives I cannot stand weren't around, and it reminded me how much I like all of my other relatives. The amount of food served was astonishing. I'm used to my 80% empty refrigerator, and there was an overflowing dinner table and kitchen island providing for 20-some relatives. Big family.

Upcoming things I'd like to do: Finish my bead knitted purse (<50%), learn to crochet, learn to tat lace, trim a hat with flowers, knit and felt a tiny top hat, sew a vest, bowtie, and jacket for a costume, make a face mask for cold winter air, and sew an 1880's-esque outfit.

On a related note, how are burda's patterns for historical accuracy?

I wish some of this eagerness could be turned into determination for finishing things.

Not in general, just a particular vest that has been giving me piles of frustration. After cutting out the outer portions, I lost one of the pattern pieces before I could cut it out of lining material. Now I am trying to line up some of the lining with some of the exterior, and there is no physically possible way to make them work. Should I keep trying? Say screw the whole thing?
Or in other words, crafters, independent designers, and small businesspeople unite!

I really don't think it should come as a surprise to many people that I'm fond of Steampunk, and many aspects therein. While I don't have a livejournal account, and neither do I want one, I do enjoy perusing the group steamfashion: [link] That said, I'm NOT a fan of rude, condescending elitists in any situation. Why is this relevant? This post: [link] by [link] which came very quickly on the heels of this post: [link] If you don't feel like following the links, here's a summary: Velvetgarden, a designer, posted a picture of an underbust vest/harness-thing at her etsy shop. Jaborwhalky, the mod for steamfashion, wrote a post about comparison shopping, and pointed out that the same item (sans decoration) was available much cheaper elsewhere, and posited that the decoration on the vest could be re-created for a few dollars. She also misspelled "cheaper", but that's beside the point. My blood boils because jaborwhalky thought it would be appropriate to single out an independent designer's work as being overpriced, point out a place to buy it much cheaper, condescendingly told Velvetgarden where to find the item at wholesale price and stated that the attention being drawn wasn't such a bad thing, after all, and misspelled "cheaper", again. The moderator of a community singled someone out for charging more for a customized item, encouraged people to get it elsewhere and copy the modification of an original design, and was incredibly rude in the process. The absolute cherry on this @$$hole cake, though, is the fact that the comparison shopping post began with, "Ok, I do not have a lot of scratch for fun clothing type things, so when I want something I tend to shop around till I find it at the lowest price I can find." Not a bad sentiment out of context, I will freely admit. Problem: this sentiment was expressed by someone who has appeared in many pictures wearing a hat from Topsy Turvy Design: [link] and clothing from Retroscope Fashions: [link] Both wonderful sources of pretty things, but also quite expensive. Several hundred dollars worth of expensive for some things, and she (jaborwhalky) was fussing over/tarnishing a reputation over about $30? I must be missing something here. Jaborwhalky, this behavior is inexcusably rude, crass, and quite unladylike. Not to mention how disgusting it is to see someone blatantly suggesting that people should rip off a designer's intellectual property. You strumpet.

Disclaimers: I don't know/have any business with/have ever met any of the people involved in this rant. The only person I am upset with is jaborwhalky. All of the businesses mentioned should be assumed to make excellent quality, beautiful, original items; I have never heard of anyone having any actual problems with their merchandise, but most of their things are simply too expensive for my broke student budget (seriously, I shop for steampunk-able things at thrift stores). Also, it is a particular pet peeve of mine when people do not accept and take responsibility for being jerks. This is compounded by another pet peeve: sloppy language skills on the part of someone who is taking a superior tone.

Remember kids, play nice. Here there be monsters and internet bullies.

Happy All Saints' Day! I saw Murders in the Rue Morgue last night. For a horror film, it was actually funny, albeit in a completely unintentional way. Afterward, I put some gel inserts in my shoes and walked around on State St. For free!
Historically, the Saturday closest to All Hallows' Eve has been a major event in my city. Unfortunately, the revelry grew to the point where large numbers of the people were from out of town, expecting to consume copious amounts of alcohol and riot. Now, State St is blocked off, and people are charged a fee to get on the (public) street, and there are cops. Everywhere.
Back to Friday- there were more pirates and fairies than you can shake a stick at, some incredibly underwhelming "slutty insert-costume-here"s, not as many jokers as I had expected, and a Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog GROUP. Those people made my night. Penny had a clipboard and asked me to sign, they sang, it was wonderful. Did I mention the fourth member of their group? Lloyd from Say Anything... with a boom box playing the Dr. Horrible soundtrack! They made me realize that the whole thing would be more fun if I were actually in character, instead of just dressed up.
And who was I? The White Rabbit, of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I promise, there will be a picture of that. Inspiration taken from John Tenniel's illustrations, NOT the movie version. KTHX

I'm currently looking for a new sewing machine. My old one consistently had problems, and I got sick of not being able to sew more than an inch before having to cut the fabric out of the tangled mass of thread.
Anyway, got any suggestions for models I should try/avoid? I can't afford to spend thousands, but I really want a good machine that I can get a lot of work done on.

Because of heavy rain and tornadoes last weekend, the governor has declared a state of emergency. I'm not really worried about my family- they live far enough away from the river that if our house actually did flood, the entire town would have been long evacuated. I just found out that I can't get a library card at the public library. I really need to find a summer job. I should also probably be sleeping now. On the other hand, I learned how to knit a fair isle pattern, knit cables, make chainmaille, and blow glass (badly). Hopefully I will learn to crochet sometime in the near future. I like cephalopods. Lack of sleep makes me silly.

tapir

I'm not sure if that is spelled correctly, as I've only ever heard it out loud. I am almost finished with this semester- one more full day, and then finals. I'm utterly tickled to be this close to done, as this has been a semester from Hell. After finals I will have a few days of hectic packing and unpacking, I will be taking a glassworking class and hopefully working somewhere in a not food service capacity. I've been itching to finish knitting a hat, finish sewing the massive stockpile of half-finished projects in my closet, and start tinkering with chain maille.
Of course, I will also probably spend too much time on icanhazcheezeburger.com and drooling over lovely steampunk pictures on dA.

A word of advice- If you ever consider attending a university and double-majoring in studio art and a natural science. Don't. Just don't do it. Scheduling is a nightmare, prerequisites are a nightmare, and people will unfailingly ask stupid questions about what you're going to do with that degree.

My spring break is 5 hours away from ending, and frankly, I don't think I managed to do anything productive except for finishing a couple of scarves and vegetating. I've also successfully determined that I have way too much yarn, and celebrated by buying 9 more skeins for potential projects. With the first full day of spring, I shoveled. Twice. My homework/studying is keeping me away from fun things.
So. it is my birthday today. I'm 20. I'm not really doing anything special, because I have class, and several paintings to finish and a paper to write and other things to do that will not wait. My parents sent me brownies (not the special kind) last friday, along with a birthday card from my brother, and lots of other food. 9 people have left a birthday message on my facebook wall, and my aunt brought me balloons last night. god and sanity willing, I'll have time to call my parents later tonight. A couple of people have written on my dry erase board, but aside from all of that stuff, only a few people have acknowledged my birthday in person. I really shouldn't complain- if it weren't for email and facebook, most of these people wouldn't have said anything at all, but seeing well wishing left on dry erase board or in pixels on my computer screen is so impersonal.

I hate this. My birthdays never live up to my expectations, no matter how low I set them. I didn't even get any junk mail. Getting cards and gifts and balloons and desserts are wonderful, but it doesn't really feel special if they are given whenever is conveniently close to and not on the actual date.

Ah, well. I'll post a wip of the sweater I'm in the middle of, and that will help.

If nothing else, I'm making progress on a sweater (first one ever!) and I'll have some delightful grayscale studies, still lives, and maybe a few color wheels from classes.
