Lots of great people, great food, and a great boat (which we were on, as many people tweeted much to Andy Samberg's dismay).

I'm sure you'll find stray pictures of the party from the various staffers who attended. One thing you won't see many photos of is the day after (with hangovers abound).

To those staffers who left for their homes this morning whom I didn't get to say goodbye to: thanks for coming and I hope I see you again next year!

I don't want to be one of those people who constantly talks about having a baby...but I have a baby and it does weird things to you. A number of our fellow staff members have had a child or even multiple children, and I'm not going to fool myself into thinking my experience is unique, but despite that I feel a hankerin' to talk about it.

Since having our child last Tuesday (a week ago), we've mostly kept ourselves indoors. Our days are filled with feeding and changing diapers, and once in a while we'll manage to sleep a little bit. It's strange how simple your world becomes when you're not out in the exterior, larger world. Even my internet usage has decreased, meaning I'm not able to pay as much attention to all the stuff happening on dA, in HQ, or elsewhere. It's certainly an odd experience, to say the least.

That all said, I've had a chance to get into heavy usage with a couple pieces of software that have made me think about User Experience (UX) in a different way.

Total Baby

This is an iPhone/iPod Touch app that we put on my wife's iPod Touch. It's great because it allows us to track pretty much everything worth tracking in our baby's life: feeding, diaper changing, sleep, baths, doctors appointments, vaccinations, etc etc. It does its job pretty darn well, but unfortunately it's ugly. It's one of those things that's built well and designed well, but it hasn't been polished well. When I say it's "designed well," I mean a lot of thought and knowledge went into this app's construction and it shows. Prettiness does not equal design, remember kids?

Anyway, the app is smart but ugly, yet I'm able to look past the ugliness since it does what we want it to do so damned well. This really shines a light on the idea of good design vs pretty design. There are something like 100,000 apps in the Apple App Store and I'm willing to bet a good number of the popular ones are damned pretty but horribly frustrating. Hell, I've used quite a few of them. People have a way of thinking that Apple's "style" is all polish and no intelligence, and that's simple not true. The reason people enjoy Apple products so much is because of their dedication to intelligent design and simplicity. They don't get it right 100% of the time but they get it right often enough to make their stuff worth buying.

When an app has both intelligent construction and some great polish it makes it worth having, though, and makes you proud you own it. The facebook app is a great example of this. It's nice, it's simple, and it meets expectations nearly every step of the way. I wish more UI design was like that.

So basically, it comes down to the idea that a good designer is able to take an idea and build it intelligently, and while he's at it apply some polish. The polish creates trustworthiness while the intelligence keeps the people coming back for more.

Things

There have got to be thousands of "to-do" apps on the iPhone, and Things seems to be a pretty popular one. I decided to try it out since I need to manage my to-do's a bit better, these days. Thus far it's pretty well-done, but as with a lot of apps it feels like they left some important things out. For example:

Things has a scheduler but no notifications. You can literally set due dates for tasks (awesome) but they have no way to let you know that your task's due date is coming up (lame). This negates the usefulness of due dates.

Things has a projects system where you can sort tasks into projects for better organization (awesome) but there is no way to make a project as your "default" so every time you open up Things you're offered a list of tasks associated with your current project (lame).

Things has a desktop version that you can sync to (awesome), but the desktop version costs $50 (lame). Keep in mind this is a to-do list desktop app! I'm sorry, I just can't see the appeal right now. The iPhone app is $10 and does all the same stuff. If you wanted to manage your tasks across everything (without an automatic sync) you'd have to shell out $60. This is uber-lame. Jumsoft has the idea right with their Money app. The iPhone app is free, and the desktop version is $40.

Granted, I don't have a ton of gripes with this app since it does its job far better than a lot of other to-do apps I've used. Still, I have to complain a bit because I'm certain it'll effect the development of the app (yeah right).

Speaking of to-do apps, it's...

Update: Due to requests by a number of people, I've published this journal as a news article located here.

As designers, many of us look at packaging with a trained and criticizing eye. We'll often focus on the problems we see with the front of the package as well as the construction of it, talking about the poor design or ridiculous colors, not to mention how overpackaged it is or how dumb the wording is.
But rarely do we flip the package over and scrutinize the backside. Namely, the ingredients label.

Most people don't realize this, but ingredients labeling is intentionally designed to make it difficult for you to read what's inside the food you're eating. We tend to not think about this stuff, but sadly it's true.

Take a look at Fake Label 1 below

This is the common label you see on the back of your food products. The ingredients I chose above are meaningless and random. What's more important is the typesetting. Notice how it is set in all caps, bold, and is force justified. These particular methods of typesetting are known to reduce legibility in large blocks of text and actually cause people to be feel less motivated to read.

To get specific about it, let me break down the "ingredients" to this intentionally broken ingredients list:
All Caps: When setting long lines of copy in all caps, every glyph takes the general shape of a rectangle and the human eye has more trouble distinguishing one word from another at a quick glance. Caps should only be used to indicate the beginning of a word or a series of words when used in long lines of copy.
Bold Font Weights: Similarly to all caps, when setting long lines of copy in bold it creates a more visually solid reading atmosphere. In other words, the glyphs appear to be solid black shapes instead of uniquely varied tones of gray. The typical "regular" font weights are usually the best for typesetting legibility.
Force Justification: This is a huge no-no amongst typographers. There are several reasons why it's a bad idea to force justify multiple lines of type. For one, the human eye needs the semi-random and free-flowing rag on the right-hand side of the copy block to help distinguish one line of type from another (in fact, the more jagged and random the length of the lines are, the better). Second, the large gaps between words further reinforce the human eye's difficulty in focusing on individual lines of copy.

Contrary to what you may think, there is no law requiring food manufacturers to list their ingredients using all caps, bold, and force justified alignment. The only rules about ingredients lists revolve around the order in which the ingredients are listed, not the typesetting in which they are displayed.

Now take a look at Fake Label 2 below:

I've taken the exact same ingredients as in Fake Label 1, and the exact same amount of space available, and set the type in a more comfortable manner. It's suddenly a lot easier to read the ingredients, isn't it?
Every label on your food could be set similarly, but it's not done. Why? Because companies don't want you to read the ingredients! They want you to gloss over that back label and ignore what may/may not be inside the food you're buying.
You might find, in your travels, that some food packaging is actually very simply labeled. Usually when ingredients lists are short and sweet, they are set in a comfortable-to-read fashion because the companies are trying to say, "Look! Our food is simple and good for you! See how few ingredients there are?!"

Conclusion

As you have seen, it doesn't take any more room to set ingredients lists in a typographically-sound fashion. In fact, it can take less room to set copy pleasantly. The obvious reason why ingredients lists are set as they are is because food companies don't want you to read what's in the food you're buying.

Stay sharp and buy smart, because now you're better informed than the vast majority of your fellow consumers.

The Realization of Groups

A thing being touched on a lot via the Groups talk and promotion that we all see from #hq (and from admins like myself) revolves around how Groups will create new homes for you...sort of like building special little sub-communities within the larger whole community of deviantART. This sounds cool in writing, but you don't really get a sense for what it means. Not really. So as a member of dA since the beginning, let me clarify how Groups will change our landscape from a perspective only an OGD (original gangster deviant) can give you.

Attention Span

In the old days of dA, it was easy to focus. Very very easy, in fact. There was a small stream of content, and you could visit the home page and see new stuff every hour like you can now, but the difference was that you could actually view and comment on all of it. Nowadays, you can't do that. There's just too much being uploaded to dA, and it's hard to find stuff that interests you. Groups will provide people with a more easily-managed stream of content that we'll all be able to focus on. That's a good thing.

Everybody Knows Your Name

Way back when, we all knew each other. We didn't really even need to watch people because we would routinely visit one another's pages to see what the latest news was. Groups will allow for this same type of behavior, and will encourage it. You'll be together with your select group of friends and maybe even their friends, not to mention a handful of people who apply or get invited into your group. And you'll all get to know each other in a way that's not as easy in the current dA setup.

Competition

We've all heard the phrase "necessity is the mother of invention." As we know, the meaning is that when you discover a need for something you're more likely to find a way to fill that need. Well, when you're an artist (like you are), competition spurs self-betterment. When I was first on dA, I saw work being done by other people and I envied it. Like crazy. I wanted to out-do a lot of the other artists I saw because I wanted to be at the level they were at, and then some. So I worked my ass off, produced a lot of bad work, but over the years bettered myself. The same will happen on a larger scale with Groups. For one, you'll find Groups all competing for your membership and/or fanship. Secondly, you'll find that the Group you're in will find another similar Group and want to kick its ass (via art/content betterment). Thirdly, you'll find yourself vying for promotion within your Group (unless you're the founder). All of this competition will lead to people bettering themselves and bettering their respective Groups. It'll be great for our collective creativity.

Unforeseen Cleverness + Trend-Setting

One of the great things about having been on dA in the early years is that I saw how people got clever with the tools they had available to them. Sometimes that cleverness would mean they'd totally abuse the system and cause new guidelines to be put in place, and new code to be written to protect areas from abuse. Other times it would mean they would inspire everybody else on the site in a new way, and we would see new trends emerge. Groups will encourage this because each Group will be like its own ecosystem, where members will feed off of each others' work and new ideas will be born.

You'll Have A Veteran Story

Nine out of ten old-school dA members have said, at one point in their lives, "deviantART was way better back in the early years." Everybody who is here when Groups is launched will have a similar story in 5+ years, when they decide they liked it better when Groups was new and all these damn kids weren't hanging around uploading their [insert popular entertainment of the future here] fan artworks and derivative crap.

So in general, I think there's more to look forward to than just the feature set. When we look back upon the release of Groups we'll wonder how we got along without it. It'll be cool, believe you me.

I've received a few inquiries into design work, lately, and while not all of them were of the topic I'm about to discuss I've certainly received my share of "freebie requests" over the years. It just seemed like an ample time to raise the topic again so we can all share in discussion, as per usual.

Work for Free

Every once in a while, I get a request asking if I'll do work for free. Sometimes it's an inquiry into working on a website for free, sometimes it's just a wallpaper request, but the most common request is for a free logo. I think it's obvious that these requests are insulting, but over time I've learned to see them from a different angle. You see, the people who ask for free work aren't intending to be hurtful or even selfish. Rather, they just aren't informed as to the difficulty, time, and value that design work has.
Part of the problem is software like The Logo Creator, which gives people basic tools to create what they're told is a logo. In actuality, it's a basic image generator that lets you mix and match shapes, letters, and textures. These really aren't logos, but the average folk usually don't know better and think that logos are easy to whip up in a flash.

Why it's not Free

Design in general, at least as it pertains to the Communication Arts (my area of expertise), is a difficult field to be in. On one hand, the job of a designer is to create work that seems untouched by human hands. It's intended to be without a particular "style" because it exists to communicate a message. On the other hand, we all know we have a style and that's why people keep coming back to us. But what makes our work worth anything?
Well, let me break down the assumption and the actuality of how good designers are born and how they come up with their creations:

The Assumption
Average Joe -> Gets copy of Photoshop -> Is now designer -> whips up cool graphics -> done.

The Actuality
Talented Artist -> Studies art throughout early school years -> Goes on to trade college, studies design for at least 4 years -> Gains experience working at agencies or shops where he perfects his craft -> Spends a lot of money on software, hardware, printers, books, and other necessary supplies -> Continues to work to perfect his craft -> Gets request for logo design -> Hashes out several dozen ideas over several weeks' time -> presents ideas to client -> refines those ideas a bit more, presents again to client -> client decides upon direction -> designer finishes project, hands over final files -> designer wonders if it was good enough and how to do better next time, also ponders if he's personally good enough yet.

I summarized that a bit for your reading pleasure, by the way.

So what does this all mean? Why exactly isn't it free? Well, because a ton of time, energy, knowledge, experience, and education is wrapped up into every project a designer does.

To Put it Into Perspective

Using some gross generalizations, I'd like to help clarify why good designers deserve to get paid just like everyone else does for their work:

Doctors
Let's say you're very ill. Who would you rather go to: A guy who picked up a stethoscope and white lab coat and called himself a doctor, or a real doctor who went through about a decade of medical education, coupled with years of on-the-job training and holds several degrees? Wouldn't you pay him for doing his job?

Architects
Hypothetically, you need a house. It's cold outside and you want to not be so cold anymore. So you decide you need an architect. Who would you rather use: A guy who knows how to nail two boards together because he found a hammer, or somebody who went to architecture school and learned all of the required safety codes and guidelines in order to build you a home that won't collapse in on itself and kill you and everybody you love? Wouldn't you pay him?

Pilots
You're boarding a jet headed for fabulous Las Vegas! Who do you want flying it: A guy who saw "Airplane!" a few times, or a trained pilot? This one's pretty simple.

A Brief Conclusion

I'm hoping this has been somewhat clarifying for everybody who questions design. However, there's one more thing I have to address. Obviously my analogies were using professions where one's physical safety is at stake, and it can be argued that bad design isn't a travesty that would threaten to kill a person. Good design isn't going to make you healthier or keep you from dying, but it will make that package of vitamins easier to understand, and it will communicate the differences between one car and another. Design is really a method of communication, very much like writing except using imagery...

Maybe it's been a persistent hum for the past 9 years, or maybe it's something that has grown louder exponentially over those same 9 years, but recently I've noticed more and more complaints from deviants about nude artwork on deviantART. Some say they're sick of seeing it all the time, some say it's inappropriate and tasteless, and others liken the nude body to outright pornography. In addition to all of these complaints, there is a secondary stream of upheaval surrounding male nudes, where the complainer is perfectly okay with female nudity but completely appalled by male nudity.

As you know (or should know), I went through a rather rigorous education involving art history. I wasn't unique in my education, mind you, since most of my fellow design graduates underwent a similar education. Still, the fact remains that I've studied the shit out of artwork (I was like "Bam, take that, art history!") and I'm fairly well informed on the topic (not brilliantly informed, but fairly well informed), and I know with utmost certainty that at one point or another in the history of mankind somebody drew or sculpted a nude figure. Amazing, but true!

Okay, let's get down to reality, here. The people who complain about nudity are most definitely de facto fans of those artists referred to as the Old Renaissance Masters (or some variation of the title). If you're curious who I'm referring to, just think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who are named after some of these Masters (look, you learned something already). Coincidentally, all of the Ninja Turtles' namesakes have drawn, painted, or sculpted nude figures before. Does that make them pornographers? Does the portrayal of nudity turn an otherwise brilliant artist into a creepy and disgusting porn distributor?

Before we answer that rhetorical question, let's look at the artwork that some of these greats did. Artwork you've probably all seen but forgot about that whole naked part (arguably the best part, but I digress):

Michelangelo

Michelangelo is most famous for a scant number of paintings and sculptures, and most average folk recognize the works but don't know the name attached to them. For the sake of my grand argument, let's focus on the ones where he forgot to add in pants (what a sicko, right?).

The Statue of David

David, the hero of that whale of a tale known as David vs Goliath, is portrayed in this sculpture. And yes, he's naked as the day he was born (and look how coy he is about it). Before you cringe at that penis of his, consider that Michelangelo was a poster boy for religious propaganda. Back in the day (way way way back in the day, to be precise), Michelangelo and most other brilliant Italian Renaissance artists made their money and fame by working for the Catholic church. His work got the thumbs-up from Popes, Cardinals, and other guys who wear robes and funny hats. Do you think they'd keep hiring an artist had they thought him a pornographer? I think not.

The Sistine Chapel Ceiling

This is the ceiling of that chapel that everybody knows about but usually calls "The Sixteen Chapel." There's some nekkid up there on that ceiling. Specifically, there's a naked Adam (from Adam & Eve, the hit reality show) who is outstretching his weak hand towards that of God's, who is seconds away from touching his hand and bestowing life upon him. Remember how in the story of Adam & Eve there's all that talk about how Eve sinned (that's women for you) and that's why we have to wear clothes? You can't really paint that all-important piece of religious history but put a burlap sack on Adam, can you? Of course not. And for fuck's sake, it's painted on a church's ceiling! People go to church and look up while they're bored from the sermon, and they see nudity! If it's good enough for church it's certainly good enough for you prudish deviants. Oh, before I forget, here's that penis shot I spoke about:

Leonardo Da Vinci

Star of "The Da Vinci Code," Leonardo Da Vinci is considered an all-around genius. Most people know him from his popular pieces The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, and some even know him from <a href="http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwone/images/tank_image1...

After a couple years of trying to cure our cat, Kennedy, of a respiratory infection we've begrudgingly decided it's time to put him to sleep.

Previously I'd mentioned that Kennedy had been having a hard time breathing and we thought he wouldn't be around for much longer. Well, we've been giving him a lot of antibiotics as well as kitty morphine, and while I'm sure he's felt good from the morphine he still continues to cough/sneeze up bacteria-ridden boogers and sounds like he's got a horrible case of smoker's lung. Technically he's suffering from 3 different forms of bacteria, and we can't treat all 3 simultaneously because they're all resistant to most anti-biotics. The vet finally said that there's no way he's going to be cured of his affliction. We can't have him around our newborn, coughing up bacteria everywhere, and we also can't afford to treat him for the remaining period of his life. He's already an old cat, we know he's suffering and in pain, and so we don't really have much choice.

We've resigned to put him to sleep this coming Tuesday. It's not going to be easy on my wife, who has had Kennedy for a very long time and feels very connected to him. Of course, I know what it's like to lose a cat as my cat Oliver passed away earlier in the year.

No fun.
For a while I've had a small Bamboo Fun at home, and it's served me well enough, but more and more I've been in need of a decent and ergonomic mouse for all the stuff I do at my home desk. You see, the Bamboo Fun is fine for tablet uses, but the one I have is so tiny that it's become frustrating to try to move around in the well-defined sensor region, and it's also been aggravating my near-carpal tunnel wrist pain.

So a few days ago I did some research on ergonomic mice and came across the Microsoft Natural® Laser Mouse 6000. It's touted as the most ergonomic mouse available, due to its thick construction and tilted angle. This afternoon (after I got my broken iPhone replaced, nice work on that hardware Apple) I headed to OfficeMax to pick up the mouse of my soon-to-be dreams. I bought it, took it home, and set it up.

Ergonomics

The first thing you notice is how big this thing is. It's also got a bit of weight behind it, but once I got used to holding it properly it felt very comfortable. The way it makes your wrist rest on the table is very nice and I can see they did their homework when it came to ergonomics. Like I said, it takes some getting used to, but after 5 minutes it feels comfortable and appropriate.

Setting Up

To use it on a Mac (which it says it's compatible with), you pop the included CD into your drive and install Microsoft Intellipoint. During installation the installer seemed to have trouble with a particular file, but when I checked its location it was there. Kinda strange to give me an error, but the installer said everything finished correctly. The preference pane has settings for pretty much everything the mouse has on it: left/right clicks, wheel functionality, and the ever-popular back/forward buttons stationed on the side.

Using it

It doesn't work.
What's that? You want me to elaborate? Well of course I will, you imaginary person who didn't ask the question I just posed!
This mouse does. not. work.
You see, mice have a specific set of tasks that all mice must do to qualify as mice: point & click. Sadly, the MIcrosoft Natural® Laser Mouse 6000 doesn't want to be a normal mouse, it wants to be an expensive paper weight. Left-clicking works decently enough, but requires a very firm press-in on the button for it to actually register the click. The same is true for the right-click. The scroll wheel scrolls just fine, but the wheel's click is random: it realizes I'm pressing down on it maybe once out of every 8 times I try, and like all other buttons I have to press very firmly. To give you an idea of how firmly these buttons must be pressed to register anything, it's about how hard you'd press down on a ball of clay if you wanted to make a 1-inch deep impression with your thumb.

Verdict

I'm returning this piece of crap tomorrow and doing what I should've done to begin with: I'm buying a Logitech mouse.
Sometimes I wonder how Microsoft thought it would be okay to release this product. I did some more digging using specific terms regarding the lack of clicking, and found a whole pile of similar complaints, basically verifying that it's not just me suffering these mouse woes. Clicking is core to the purpose of a mouse, and this mouse cannot do it properly.

My wife and I are in the market for a new car, and we've been digging through car details and information like crazy. I almost forgot how painful this process is. There's something to be said about the car industry, which is that they don't seem to be capable of producing an all-around "good" car. The important term is "all around," mind you, since there are plenty of cars out there that are good at certain things. It just seems like, in general, they all suck for one reason or another.

Some cars have a lot of style but lack in safety. Other cars are safe and economical but look like shit. Still other cars have a ton of stuff going on but are too expensive. It's a wonder there isn't one car out there that has it right.

It kinda looks like we'll be getting an Accord, when all is said and done. They're good cars all around, except they sort of lack in the style department and they don't come cheap (or as cheaply as we'd like them to). At the very least they're not as hideous as the new Civics.

Man, having a baby is a lot of work, and she hasn't even been born yet!

On the topic of babies...

I'm pretty much done with my portion of the baby's room. While my wife busies herself with getting the clothes and other materials put together, washed, and organized, I busied myself with building a boatload of furniture (which may or may not have come over on a boat) and also painted clouds along the walls of the room (per the below little shot).

Thanks to dA for being host to countless reference images of clouds. If you're interested in how I painted them, it was basically a matter of getting a painting sponge and cutting it into small, medium, and large shapes. I then got 2 small cans of primer and had one of them tinted a grayish blue tone. Sponge white paint onto the walls very lightly to create the fading effect (where the clouds are thicker/deeper in some areas and more whispy in others). After your first coat of clouds is done, dab in the gray paint to fill in the shadows. Let that dry, then paint over it a little bit more with white paint to imply layering, and you're done. I made sure the clouds were heaviest by the window in the room and tapered off the farther away from the window they got, and yes all the clouds share the same light source (the window).
It's funny how I now think in terms of Photoshop when it comes to creativity. Even though I was working with some of the most basic artistry tools, my mind outlined the process of building the clouds as if I were drawing them out using brushes in Photoshop. I was thinking about layers, transparency, etc. Sorta weird, but in many ways it takes away the lofty process of traditional painting and puts me in a mental atmosphere that I'm more comfortable and familiar with, and I think it worked out.

A noisy bit of drama (or dArama) has accompanied the addition, with people exclaiming (incorrectly, mind you) that these links make it easier for people to "steal art" or even suggesting that we're putting artwork off the site and somehow make extra money in the process.

$spyed wrote a brief rebuttal to the drama that's been spreading around, and you can read it right here.

In addition to what he wrote, I'd just like to say that the outrage at these links has been ridiculous and completely out of hand. The buttons that we added to enable easier sharing do one thing: they paste links to deviation pages. They do the exact same thing you could do by yourself just by copying the URL from the browser address bar and pasting it someplace. They're not making it any easier to steal art.

What's more, within dA there is a culture of popularity that is encouraged by both the community and the administration. We have a "popular" filtering metric on nearly every area of the site involving artwork, and the majority of our artists strive to become popular by asking people to +fav their work or simply leave a comment. People around here feel like they NEED popularity, and in many ways that's perfectly fine and good. Suddenly, we make it 1% easier for people to become popular by linking to their deviation pages from outside of deviantART and it's a problem? Isn't this backwards? People want to become popular only through the limited means of deviantART and not through the means of exposing themselves to non-deviants?

I've also been reading comments from people saying stuff like "you understand why we'd be upset" and I feel compelled to say a resounding NO. We don't understand the upset surrounding this because honestly it's all completely misinformed! The idea that dA would build and implement a feature to encourage "art theft" is downright ridiculous. We hire and pay a whole team of people to find/remove copyright infringements and our community thinks we want people to steal their work? Admins aren't supposed to say stuff like this, but that's stupid.

So please, take a moment, catch your breath, and realize that all of this drama is for nothing.

I've been on a crazy hunt for a decent email client for my mac. Specifically, an email client very heavy on the IMAP support. One which notifies me of a new email the second it appears on the server, instead of waiting to check mail every 5 minutes.

Some solutions I've tried:

Mail.app. A decent email application that sucks at IMAP support.

Postbox. A new email client on the scene based upon Thunderbird. It randomly decides to stop checking the server, meaning emails go un-downloaded.

Fluid. An app that makes "single-serving web browsers," and I use it with Gmail currently. It does its job but I hate the gmail interface.

Mailplane. Does the same thing as Fluid, but is gmail-specific. Has a problem in that it still relies on the gmail interface. There is a skinning option, but it's unreliable because Google routinely changes the html in Gmail.

Thunderbird. Basically the same engine that's in Postbox. Fail.

Entourage. Slow, clunky, buggy, and unreliable.

Can ANYONE point me to a decent mac email app that doesn't suck ass when it comes to IMAP support?

As you may know, deviantart.com is home to two distinct artwork filters: Newest and Popular.
These two filters produce two very different browsing results. Popular, by definition, displays the most popular artwork (an algorithm dictated by $mccann's fairexposure wizardry) and tends to generally be accepted as "good" artwork, so much so that we use it as the default category for logged-out/new visitors. Then there's the Newest filter, which, also by definition, displays the very newest work that's been uploaded to deviantART, typically within the last minute (and sometimes quicker).

A lot of people prefer to browse through deviantART using just the Popular filter, and they do this because it tends to produce the best-looking artwork most often. I, however, prefer to browse using the Newest filter, and here's why: the concept behind it is fucking amazing.

Consider, for a moment, that the Newest filter is displaying artwork that has just been finished. Nearly every artist who you see using this filter has just recently completed their work of art, and has elected to upload it to deviantART the very second you decided to look at the front page. Granted, there are a good number of recent uploads which fail to meet the standard of being beautiful or "good" by any stretch of the imagination, but every time I look at the front page I see at least one nice piece of artwork.

I like the idea of seeing fresh artwork a lot, but I like the idea of collecting fresh artwork even more. Let me elaborate upon the experience I aim to create by collecting front page artwork. Imagine being the artist that just uploaded a piece of work, for a second. I know you've all been there, and I know you know what it feels like. You hit the "submit" button and the browser reloads, telling you your artwork has successfully been posted to deviantART. You sit and wait for a little while, wondering if anyone is looking at it right then. You refresh your page after a few seconds, and you see that your Message Center has a new message in it. You quickly check it, and discover somebody has added your brand new piece of work to a collection of theirs. If I've been browsing the front page, and I liked the work, that was probably me collecting it.

I know how it feels to get that early validation of work, and I like sharing that experience with others. I also like supporting the idea that the front page can be a gold mine of really great work. To get all of this done, I created a collection filled with nothing but nice front page artwork. When I decide something is "nice," I'm not saying it's brilliant or the best work I've ever seen, mind you. What I'm saying is that it's got a nice quality to it. Oftentimes it's a nice composition, or a really interesting color palette. Other times I'm impressed simply by the technique. I've collected work some might consider a masterpiece, and I've also collected work that was created by an amateur. Please allow me to share some selected pieces with you, so you might see how awesome browsing the front page can actually be.

<a href="http://Harnois75.deviantart.com/art/Warriors-of-the-Deep-123685996" title="Warriors of the Deep by ~Harnois75, May 25, 2009 in Traditional Art > Drawings > Sci-Fi"> <a href="http://macoeurbrille.deviantart.com/art/salvageasmile-128084916" title="salvageasmile by ~macoeurbrille, Jul 2, 2009 in Photography > Animals, Plants & Nature > Flowers & Plants"> <a href="http://BillCorbett.deviantart.com/art/Winston-126104934" title="Winston by ~BillCorbett, Jun 16, 2009 in Digital Art > Paintings & Airbrushing > Miscellaneous"> <span class="shadow" style="background-image:url(http://sh.deviantart.net/shadow/x/107/150/logo3.png);_background-imag...

We've seen a ton of action with the feature, and thanks to all that action we've also caught some more bugs that hadn't been caught before. Overall it's shaping up to be a great project that lots of people seem to be enjoying.

Still, there's one tiny thing people don't know about Portfolio. It's not a big deal, or anything, but it's a nice function our developers added in that makes browsing Portfolios a little bit more enjoyable: arrow key navigation.

While you're in a gallery, you can use the left/right arrow keys to move back and forth between images.
While in "zoomed-in" mode, you can also use the left/right arrow keys to move around, and then you can use the ESC key to exit that mode.

This won't change your life, or anything, but if you're showing your work to somebody in-person it can be a lot easier than trying to move a mouse around.

I'm wrapping up the design on a freelance web project I've been working on for a few months. It's nothing too major, just something that occupies me on the weekends and after hours. I noticed something that's funny with my workflow, though. I've been working at dA for coming on 2 years now (since returning to the post in February 2008) and over that time I've learned a lot about usability on the web. It's one of those jobs where you learn things without even realizing.
2 years ago I probably would've designed this website in an entirely different manner, and yeah it would've worked and done its job but it probably wouldn't have been close to excelling in the UX department like it seems to be doing.
Working with my team, and working with dT, as well as paying attention to how the members on dA actually use the things we build helps me gain so much more clarity than working in a bubble. It's kinda funny.

Have you ever been in a position where you've learned a ton without realizing it?

The Effect of Contemporary Art on Art Appreciation

Art in the Public Eye

Over the past handful of decades, many contemporary artists have been working to simplify the core message and structure of their artwork down to its most basic and concentrated form. In many cases, this focus on simplification manifests itself in the shape of a vibrant red ball sitting in an otherwise vacant gallery room, or a rope hanging from a ceiling in an otherwise vacant gallery room, or even a seemingly sporadic collection of objects sitting in an otherwise vacant gallery room. Generally, the subject matter of the works is deemed unimportant or vague by the public at large, because this focus on pure minimalism in art furthers the opinion that contemporary artists are lazy or that they make art "even my kid could do."

As you can imagine, the perception that art is easy to do (especially contemporary art) is both flawed and true at the same time. Most undereducated members of the public view art as a source of decoration, a means by which they can pretty up a room of their house so it feels more comfortable to live in. Few realize the significance art holds in our culture as a method of reflecting and defining who we are as a society. Instead, many people would rather go to their local Thomas Kinkade gallery and buy a $100 reproduction of some painting of a cottage. In many ways, true art is both extremely difficult and extremely easy. The difficulty comes in developing the idea and the means to illustrate it (be it using paint, metal, wood, etc), while the ease oftentimes comes in execution. Most talented artists are skilled enough in what they do that they know how to produce what's in their head–a process the average person couldn't do even if they tried.

But all of this is moot. The reality is that the public perceives art as being about attractiveness, while artists perceive art as being a means of communicating emotions, ideas, abstract concepts, and more. Yes it's about skill, technique, talent, and form (among other numerous things), but to Joe the Plumber it's about getting a pretty picture of a cottage. How we do combat the idea that art is all about prettiness and decoration?

The Source

Allow me to backtrack a little bit, to the source of the frustration you can probably detect in my words.
In Los Angeles, there is a school called Central High School No. 9, which is a high school for the arts that has (to my knowledge) recently been opened. It's located just off the 101 freeway just outside of downtown, and you'll best be able to recognize it by a gigantic metal sculpture built to seemingly serve as a landmark as well as a large part of a running theme throughout the architecture of the school, that theme being an abstract (and sometimes literal) representation of "creativity" as a very broad concept. It was also very clearly designed to fit into the now-popular theme created by the local Walt Disney Concert Hall, which was constructed in a very interesting form that actually supports the acoustics which take place inside.

You'll note from the link to the school that the construction budget was listed at $232,834,857. That's a hefty sum for a school, isn't it? It's not so much the school that's the problem, but the giant sculpture sticking out of the top. How much did that cost to construct? I can't find a definite answer, but in many ways the point of my frustration isn't even in the cost of the tower nor the school itself.

Nay, the frustration comes from the exclusion of function in form. Allow me to continue in the next chapter, as follows:

The Exclusion of Function

As a designer, I've been taught that form follows function. This is true in so many areas of my life, not to mention my work, and I believe it to actually be a staple of all arts, not just design. In design we hold the testament to mean that the shape of the design we create should serve to support its purpose, and quite frankly I think every piece of artwork should do that or else it fails as a work of art. Consider, once again, that the act of creating art (any type of art) is a form of expressing one's self and communicating one's inner thoughts into a visual form. Sometimes this form is metal, other times it's paint, and other times it's pixels on a screen. The medium isn't really important, but the method of creation should reinforce the message the artist is trying to communicate. In art studies we all learn about symbology, color theory, and wide variety of "tricks" which we employ to tell the viewer what we're trying to say. Sometimes we intend to be subtle about it, while other times we intend to be obvious about it. My profession aims square at the "...

Portfolios (The Awesome Version)

Portfolios are getting ready to go. We're so close it hurts.

Let me give you a very brief run-down of what our new Portfolio feature is intended to be, so you've got a little knowledge before you go checking one out.

The new Portfolio feature is intended to be a drop-dead simple way to create a professional-looking portfolio and share it online with clients, art schools, and anybody else you want to impress. Although I can't show you the wizard system quite yet, just know that we've clocked in the building of a Portfolio at around 10 minutes. What that means is that you don't need to be a super high-tech web guru to build a Portfolio and look like you totally know what you're doing. All you need is our Portfolio system and some great art to show off.

With that said, we've kept the look and feel of the Portfolios very simplistic. I'm going to show you just one template that I've customized using the Portfolio wizard. Keep in mind that this system is still in beta and has some bugs here and there, but we've ironed the vast majority of them out of the templates. Still, if you find a weirdness, let me know.

Some Portfolio Facts

You don't need to know any HTML or CSS to build an awesome Portfolio.

There are a lot of options you can use to customize your Portfolio: layout theme (dark or light), layout style (tall or wide), font type (serif/sans serif), accent color (10 colors total), and your own personal logo.

The word "deviantart" is not mentioned anywhere in your professional Portfolio, even if you're a free user.

Each template is designed with the visitor in mind. We want your visitors to be able to see your work as quickly as possible. It's a matter of getting people in, getting them looking, and getting them calling you. Simplicity ftw.

You can import deviation images from your deviantART gallery, or upload your own Portfolio-specific images without touching your dA gallery. It's your choice!

I'll share more facts with you soon enough.

New: Multiple Portfolio Examples

Some guys on the Creative Team got creative (heh) and built their own Portfolios.
There are several things worth discussing. Please continue to read at your leisure:

iPhone

My new iPhone arrived on Friday, ahead of schedule. So far it's working very nicely, as I expected. The speed of the device is really what's impressive. Going from a 1st-gen model to a 3rd-gen model is quite the contrast. One thing I definitely dislike, though, is the battery life–it's very clearly being drained at a slightly faster rate, probably due to the 3G usage. Kinda sucks, but such is life.

Baking

I decided yesterday to bake a couple new things. First, I tried hacking my banana chocolate chip muffin recipe to include strawberries instead of bananas. Although they taste fine, the strawberries don't have the same strength and as a result you sort of lose the flavor. I think I'll stick to bananas.
Second, I decided I wanted to make crackers. I have no idea why. I looked up a bunch of cracker recipes and found one for cheese crackers. I followed the recipe, but my crackers were a failure, as the dough wasn't strong enough to allow me to slice each piece into a thin-enough strip to bake properly. I blame the recipe.

Baby Stuff

I sat down with my sister in law, today, and she showed me all the junk we need to get to be prepared for the impending baby. She knows what we need because she has a 1 year-old (who is awesome, btw) and is the best person we know to act as an advisor. Turns out there's a lot of stuff. The economy will certainly be benefiting from the arrival of this kid, that's for sure.
On a related note, my wife and I have been occasionally watching MTV's show, "16 and pregnant." It's a very disturbing look at the trend of unprepared parenting in this country. In every episode we've seen, the pregnant teenage mother ends up being far more responsible than the teenage father, who almost always is a tool. It's quite depressing.

Portfolio

We're getting close to releasing a beta of the new Portfolio. I've been spending days digging through our design templates, looking for bugs, and $micahgoulart has been promptly fixing them. Tonight I found just a couple more things, and once those are fixed I think the templates will be good to go. Oh yes, I designed 4 base templates for people to use in their Portfolios. Did I not mention that previously? These templates are extremely simple but still stylish, and they don't get in the way of your work. There is a controlled range of customization within each template, which allow for 240 possible layout scenarios (if I did my math right). When the beta is out, I'll fill you in on more details.

World Tour

Looks like the World Tour is almost over and done with. $Heidi and $spyed just completed their Canadian adventure and will be returning home to KAHLEEFORNIA. If they're up for it, there might just be a little devmeeting down in LA pretty soon.
