The little fan fiction that I'm tackling is taking a bit longer than I thought. Damn. I'm being thorough, I hope, in the crossover. Check out it out if you like Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist. I've changed my goal of illustrating it to finishing the prose properly. I, too, don't know exactly how it will end. I prewrite one thing and have a plan when the characters come up and kick me in the head, making the story go in another direction altogether. I try to update daily.

[link]

"Everything is plastic." He sat onto the empty seat near me, and complained about everything. I got the gist that he was a very young guy, probably in his teens. He really annoyed me. He said he was a writer. I carefully keep from rolling my eyes, because I knew what was coming next, which was to say he would want me to illustrate something for him. For free, of course.

He then got a phone call from his boyfriend, and began arguing with him. Which scared away possible clients that were looking at my work.

Sigh.

Screw it. Next month I'm doing characatures.

I now think I should have said some things and shouldn't have said others. Regardless, the ball is in their court as to if I'm in it or not. It looked like they were way more interested in the guy I was sitting next to. Not that I'd blame them or anything, cause he was sure cute and all. Talk about camera ready, unlike frumpy old me. (There's a good reason I don't like working in front of cameras).

Missed a bunch of friends at the SDCC. They simply didn't show.

Damn the crowds. I couldn't even get into one panel this year. Not even a small one. I think I was right in my decision of last year to avoid the con altogether, as I accomplished nothing but blisters on my feet.

Oh, I lie. I got a poster from a film I had never heard of from the freebie table.

Wah!

Anyhow, I look forward to getting some artwork done, and maybe get started on my animation project just in case the titmouse thing doesn't work out. I want an animation short done by the end of the year, afterall.

Had great time and managed to sell a piece, which was pretty awesome.

The weird "artsy" questions like, "what inspires you to paint this?", I can do without. Though they are entertaining.

This time there was a particularly memorable fellow, who said he was previously a bank teller, who had an epiphany, of sorts, as to a painting's value. Or what value means in a painting.

He was babbling badly, saying that painters often worked in groups to complete paintings, with just one signing the finished piece to protect the others' good name in case the painting did not make it big. They would work months on end to get the colors just right, often consulting one another. He said that he was just in the hallway, with his hand shading his eyes, and his forefinger just in his vision. He then said, wouldn't that make a great brand on a painting, always having that slight shadow of a finger in the painting...And the view that he saw in the hallway, well you just couldn't tell that the year was 2009 unless you looked carefully at the clothes...He then let me in on the know that the building that I was in was well over 100 years old.

....

I just sat there listening to the guy, thinking that he really needed to go back to school and really study art history, instead of trying to impress "Art Girl" with a vast array of non-knowledge. I was polite, but I think my thoughts did show on my face.

....

....

And then there is the "muralist" from Redlands that stopped by. The one who doesn't know how to use acrylics, only oils....

Anyhow, ran into some good friends of mine that I had met over at freedomgardens.org. One fellow works on an organic farm in Corona. We compared notes on the veggies, as the piece I was working on is related to my gardening experiences. Yep, it is a bit late for brussell sprouts, but I have 'em anyway.

The Army recruiter so far has reminded me of stupidly annoying supervisors past in my sordid security guard career, emphasis on stupid as he kept repeating his questions and was actually insulted that I was "window shopping" for the best placement.

Maybe that's a good sign for me to stay out of the Army.

Hydroponics...the combination of growing veggies with fish. I already have the fish(they're goldfish--overfed feeders that is ) and the waterpump in an outdoor wannabe pond/bucket thing I tossed together. Had it for months. I thought it would be way to expensive to try to add the plants and drainage. Not to mention it may be high maintenance.

Last night I stumbled upon a youtube video featuring one guy's setup using goldfish for the system. I had thought it wasn't a good idea to use them. Now, it looks feasible.
Today was the day that I dug them up. I got a whole whopping pound out of 3 plants, using the bag method. I think I need to develop a system with taters, but I know for sure that the tower method doesn't yield as many as the bag.

I even had one fresh sweet pea. That's right. One. The buttonquail got the caterpiller that was happily munching on the plants. Revenge is sweet sometimes. Too bad the season for peas is coming to an end here, as I'd like to try again.

Still, it's nice to have fresh herbs, onions, strawberries and such. If I had to survive though my gardening efforts, I'd be as skinny as a supermodel.

____________

Dinner!

What's better than beans for dinner? Beans with PASTA! I thought for sure that I'd loose her. I just introduced another chick into the sick box for the time being, to keep her stress levels low.
I hate being a guard. It's not really the job itself, it's the wacky rules that certain guards, who think they are boss, come up with that I "have" to follow. Some people should never be promoted to more responsibility. It goes to their heads. Things do not last long, fortunately....or you can choose to ignore the "rules" and suffer the consequences of annoyed co-workers.

The latest annoyance is the morning console person who says she is the shift manager--There is no such thing because there are only 3 of us there, and the real supervisors are offsite. She says I am to do alllll the patrols, which is frankly impossible because I am posted at the gate. It is simply too busy with truck traffic for me to do. Meanwhile, she sits in the console office playing solitare and surfing the 'net. Who's the one who really should be doing the patrols, hmmmm? I do just one to show I am a team player, though. She usually has to run to the gate to cover for me while I do it, too. Stupid.

Anyhow...onwards.

I hope to get better work soon.

With my work problem solved, for now, here's an update....:
____________

I just decided to finally tackle C++, and maybe wrap my head around object oriented programming. I'm no stranger to "OOP"s, having dabbled in it on the web through javascript, php, and python-- but I didn't know what I was doing when I was doing it in all those programs. I was even lost a bit in "Swish-script".

Now, step by step, I hope to learn. There's a free compiler that I'm using, and a free e-book that I downloaded on Monday.. I'm on chapter 3 already. Made some .exe's that didn't register as viruses on this stoooopid Vista machine. (Man, i just hate nanny programs....)

To keep me motivated, I even downloaded CrystalSpace, a free 3d game engine written in both C++ and python script. Now I just have to figure out how to use the thing. It's even supposedly compatible with blender3d. After all, the whole reason anyone learns C++ now is to program games....

___________

Progress on the new RL painting...good. I have one figure all done. Skin a might too orange for my liking, but that's easily fixed.

___________

Vertical garden is taken apart and transplanted. The plants that survived are happy where they are now planted. The garden itself is doing well. So far so good.

Wormbin actually managed to produce a potato. It's about the size of a dime, but it's definitely a potato. I really need to make sure to chop up those potato skins to a finer degree to prevent a plant from happening in the future.

Just transplanted the watermelons today. I think the lufta can wait for their transplant a few more days.

I hope it rains soon...those clouds are just sucking up all the moisture as they pass by.
___________

Buttonquail are fine. The 3 babies are getting their first feathers now. The momma bird looks like she wants a vacation from them, already.

I'm getting at least a egg a day so far. Not pushing it, as I want the birds to live to at least their 2 year life expectancy. One bird even demands a bribe before she will lay an egg. Fortunately, it's in mealworms and what garden bugs I collect.

___________

Cute neighbor guy just emailed me this link:

[link]

I think he gets me. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

___________

Just got a new post...and it's like it's a full circle from four years ago. Only this time it's the competing company that is the contract. I get the gate. So employment woes are over for now, though I'll miss being able to do substitute teaching. The new schedule doesn't allow it to happen, unless classes start at about 9am.

Anyhow, art postings will be slowed down a bit, because I'm doing some "live art" for the upcoming Artswalk here in Riverside. I plan on getting a room in May in the Arts building. I want to get some fresh work done between now and then, hopefully more than 2 pieces...so there will be less computer time for me.

The garden is going well. The vertical garden experiment is doing ok for now, though I think I found a better place to plant lettuce: under the boganvilla, which was an "oops" that took off really well and unexpectedly. The squash and other summer plants are being transplanted from the "seedling" tray to their new home. So far so good.

The buttonquail managed to hatch 3 babies this time...out of 15 eggs. I guess that's better than 1 out of 11 eggs like last time. How the heck do these things survive in the wild? Did we breed the survival instinct out of them over the 1000 or so years these things have been domesticated or what? Yeesh.

I'm in the process of eliminating a lot of stuff I don't need, and learning new skills to boot. I already know how to garden, and I'm re-starting my garden tomorrow.

What I'm oddly happy about now is that I have 2 lifeforms in my fridge right now.

One is the sourdough bread starter -- it makes damn good bread now -- that I started from an apparently wild strain of yeast in the flour I left out for a few days during the summer. I had found the directions for how to make the starter when I was bored one day on the internet. Who knew that it would actually work?

The other is yogurt. Yep. Homemade yogurt. I just had some tonight for dinner and I'm not dead or sick, yet. Thus, I think I managed to make it correctly. You use dry milk and evaporated milk to make it, as well as 1/2 cup of store bought yogurt to get it going. Next batch I just use a tablespoon of this stuff, and it should do the trick. Yep, another internet recipe that worked.

For my next trick, I'm going to make ethanol out of potatoes. You see, I never seem to be able to eat a whole 10 lb bag before the spuds start sprouting, so these possibly poisonous "sprouters" are the designated food for the fungus that produces ethanol. This yeast I bought at a local winery shop cost a whole dollar, today. All I have to do is wait a week, if it works, distill it, and I will be gas independent...

...that and convert my scooter to using ethanol for fuel.

Anyone know how to distill? I seem to have slept through that chapter in chemistry class in high school.

My dad went to the emergency room this week due to chest pains. In short.. a very scary situation. I spent the time digitally painting and looking after my mom. (She's a bit handicapped, though it is amazing just how much she can do on her own now.)

And watching cable tv, since they have it, and I don't. A tv that is. A thousand channels and nothing worth watching.

I was bored and worried. Messed up my sleeping schedule, which means I went nocturnal -- the schedule I used to keep due to guardwork. Old habits die real hard. When I came home at my apartment, I got obsessed with cooking bread. Just wanted to keep busy, I guess.

Dad came home today. No heart attack. Or blocked anything.

My bread I started yesterday is ready to bake today. In a few hours, it will be in the oven. I hope I made it right.

Welp. Here's to hoping that the week ends in all goodness.

Which means lots of nervous energy in which to paint!

Anyhow...I've decided to participate, once again, in the Daily Sketch Group over at conceptart.org. I call it dsg.

It's a good exercise to get your creative juices going, because you just don't know what the next subject will be. Hosted by the nearly invincible William B.
I earned a BA from here in studio art in 1999, which means I have a very general, but formal, arts education that covers traditional media, photography, and digital media, websites included.

Currently, I hang around a website called conceptart.org in which I participate in the various activities in the hopes of improving my skills, which my formal education left wanting.

it may help with the mental blocks.

The past few days I've been playing with a blender render, which is taking FOREVER, and drupal code, which is a gleeful thing for my inner geek.

(One of these days, I get my own website working. It's a toss up between drupal and wordpress. The css boggles the mind on both, though. )

The blender render is my attempt to get as close as possible in blender to the current opening sequence of Doctor Who. When I started, I figured, why not?. I'll post it as soon as I'm satisfied with it. So far it's taken a lot of time to get to where I am now, so I guess I'm not the most efficient production person alive or anything. 3 weeks for 8 seconds And a lot of test renders that weren't quite right.
