I have been thinking about creating a book for a long time. It will be about my aviation art, and about that from Raptorguy (look him up in my watchers list).

Now will we two create artwork for this book, this artwork will consist of only aircraft, without any background. WW2 fighters and bombers, and of course all modern stuff, from Awacs to Buccaneer. But, we need about 80 (!) good drawings in order to create a good book worth looking in, but for us two to create 80 drawings within a few month, that will never work. So, we need a third artist! So if you are very good at drawing aircraft, would like to see your art in an official book, join us!

Post some links of your stuff in this journal, and why you want to join us. You need to be committed, and be okay with the fact that you cannot upload any images you create for the book (well, VERY tiny ones only!). We will use about 2 drawings on each page, and our best drawings will cover one or two entire pages!

Together with the artwork comes some text about the aircraft, history etc. It will be a very interesting book, and we will even explain some of the techniques used to create these drawings.

I hope to hear from you.

Nick

PS< 4000 pageviews reached!
Journal time!

As all of you can see, I have been very busy drawing al sorts of aircraft lately. Very smooth ones, very rough ones, ugly and nice ones. This is all because I want to become an Aviation Artist, not only in pencil, but eventually also with painting.
I won’t draw many things that are not related to Aviation anymore (with some exceptions here and there), so if you are going to ‘watch’ me, please don’t expect more cars, animals, people etc.

So.. Having said this, I want you all to take a look at [link]. Ehangar is an Aviation Art related site, where artists and collectors of Aviation Art come together. So, if you love drawing airplanes as well, I would say sign up, and show your work to all of the masters that take a look at Ehangar.

Oh yes, I get huge amounts of note’s with just a few questions, I will answer them now.

Q: What are the materials you use?
A: I use 100grams smooth Skitzenblock paper, and 0,5 and 0,7 H and 3B pencils for almost all of my drawings. The size of the paper is almost always A4 (8’’x11’&#146.

Q: How long does it take you to create a drawing?
A: Depends. Sometimes I am finished within 2 hours, and sometimes it takes up to 25 hours.

Q: How do you create that smooth shading?
A: Easy, draw slow and use short strokes, and then blend it with a tissue or with a blending stump (tortillion).

Hi,

As you know, I am not the fastest artist on the planet. It can sometimes take me weeks to complete a drawing, or not even finish it at all, because I am just too darn lazy. Though, I have been working on a Word 2007 document called The Art of Drawing. It’s all about realistic drawing, and it is coming along pretty good. Though, I need one or two more good artists who would like to help me with it. When it is finished, I want to transform it into an PDF document that everyone can download for free!

There will be detailed information about materials, step by step tutorials, information about shading, creating highlights and much more!

There is already a lot of text in it, and the lovely artist Daisy van den Berg, also known as D17Rulez, let me use her art for this document. She may even help me with it, but nothing is certain yet.

So, are you interested in helping me with this project? It is in English, so most of you should be able to read it.

I’ve added some text here that is also featured in the document, so please do not use it for any other purposes without my approval.

I am hoping to hear from you!

Part one: Not only drawing is difficultÂ

Drawing things is an art, not just a hobby. It takes a large amount of time and effort to create a good drawing. It isn’t just a picture on some paper, it’s much more than that. It is hours and hours of hard work, study and patience. Without these three elements (Time, patience and study), you cannot create a good drawing. You really got to put your back into it, and give it all you can. Don’t rush it, stay focused and stop drawing when you think you’ve had enough or when you get tired. Start a few hours later, or maybe even a few days, weeks perhaps, but make sure you never rush a drawing, because I can guarantee you that your drawing will not look half as good then if you just put some more time and effort in to it. That’s why drawing is not easy. Not only does it require some skill, it also takes a lot more. Let’s say you drew something, but it isn’t finished. Are you still going to finish it, or are you going to leave it the way it is and start drawing something else? If you do that, you will never be able to present your drawing, or for that matter sell it. But, do you want to finish it, or did you get bored with it? And now that is also a big problem when drawing something. In the beginning it’s fun an challenging, but when you already spent a lot of hours on it, you get bored. Then you will need some self discipline, and tell yourself that you have to finish it. But, then there is another problem. Because you are bored with it, but you do want to finish it, you are going to rush it. And then, then everything is lostÂ

And I will warn you, teaching someone to draw is very difficult, and almost impossible, especially when you are using words and some pictures. I never learned how to draw, but that does not stop me from trying. I just kept on going, and eventually I became better. Even now I am still improving my skills, but not because of books. No, I am improving my skills because I practice, and keep on drawing. That’s why teaching someone how to draw is very difficult, though I have a very simple explanation on why I can draw this good; I can draw what I see. It sounds very stupid, but it is the truth. If you see a light grey, then draw it! If you see some straight lines, then draw them too! You just need the patience, and maybe even some skill to copy the things you see. And please, do not listen to people who say ‘everyone can become a great artist’, because it is just not true! I know it sounds mean, but that is just the way it is. If you cannot keep a pencil steady in your hand, you will not be able to draw a straight line. If you cannot apply equal pressure on the paper, you will not be able to create smooth shading. Though, you can practice creating smooth shading by just doing it. Just practice as long as you need, and who knows you will get better. Then you already took you first step towards being able to draw ‘good’. And yes, I say good, because if you can draw like me, you can draw good, not perfect. I still got a huge deal to learn, but I will learn this by practicing. I still make mistakes, I make them all the time, and you know why? Because I do not always draw what I see, and I do not have enough patience. And why do I not always draw what I see? Because of my lack of patience! So patience can be seen as the most important thing when drawing. I can also tell you that when you are good at let’s say sculpting or other things that require a steady hand, you will be able to pick up drawing faster than people who do not practice hobbies or crafts that require a steady hand and eye coordination. That’s why I also recommend you to focus on the things you are already good at. Don’t start drawing just because you see all those go...
