Got to meet my very good friend, the famous Collette, better known here as :devetc-etc-etc:. I suppose "meet" isn't the right word, since I was staying with her and her family for almost 4 days :P It was really great to finally meet her after only knowing her through text, photos and her ridiculously long journals. In spite of my last journal, I'm still using flickr and even enjoying it. I still don't think it has the community that dA does, but now that I know some people on there and have some contacts so I can use the features, it's a more enjoyable experience. I like being able to upload any old rubbish on there and not expect to get any feedback.

On here I have a larger audience who will look at my work, so I don't like to waste their (your) time on things that I only half-like. When I put stuff on here, I want it to be my best quality work. I decided to try out Flickr the other day. I'd used it a bit before, for searching for photos and had read about it in some news articles, so I finally decided to try it for myself.

If you don't know what Flickr is, the Wikipedia defines it as,

"a popular Web site for users to share personal photographs ... widely used by bloggers as a photo repository. Its popularity has been fueled by innovative community tools, allowing photos to be tagged and browsed by folksonomic means".[1]

The site itself is well put together and quite intuitive and easy to use considering the number of pages and features. I'm due for a new one. In about January 2003 I got my Olympus OM-1n, in December 2003 I bought my DiMAGE Z1, and in December 2004 I bought my 300D.

The OM-1n was an old film camera from the 70s that I inherited. It's a good camera and I learnt a lot by using it, experimenting with it and even developing my own photos with it.

The Minolta DiMAGE Z1 was a great camera. It's half-way between DSLR and compact. One of the first ultra-zoom cameras. It served me well and just about every photo from pre-2005 in my gallery was taken with it. There are a few PDF articles you can download from their site and others you have to subscribe to read. I'm animating a character for a game I'm making as part of a group at uni. A walk cycle from the side is fine, but took me a while to get my head around doing one from the front. I guess it's the foreshortening that makes it hard. I'm also attempting to model a car in 3D with Maya and have a bunch of other stuff due within the next few weeks so I haven't uploaded anything for a while (that's my excuse anyway).

No.. it was good. :devh-o-l-z:, :devsirnick: and :devrogie: and I were the only ones that turned up (although we weren't really expecting a lot of people). We walked around Adelaide talking, taking photos and getting sunburnt (I did anyway...).

It would have been even better with a few more people and if it wasn't so hot. It was about 35 degrees Celcius (about 95 degrees Fahrenheight) in the shade so i can see why people might have decided not to come.

For those who don't know what i'm talking about, this guy John Safran (who is actually Jewish) made a series exploring different religions. He's a writer/journalist but he's really funny. Anyway, in this series he went around the world trying different religions like Zen Buddhism, voodooism, some Viking religion and all kinda of stuff. He was in animal sacrifices and stuff and wore the secret magic Mormon underpants.

So he's exposed himself to all these evil spirits and in the last episode he gets exorcised. It was really very powerful.

One that's taken up a lot of time is my 3D animation of a pepper grinder. We had to animate it in some way over 100 frames in Maya. I decided to do a bit more than that. My pepper grinder sits looking out the window as the days pass, wishing it could leave. Then there's a dream sequence where it grows helicopter blades and flies out the window. It ends with the depressed little grinder slumped over and crestfallen.

Felt inspired today when i got home from uni.  Walking home i saw these really interesting clouds so i rushed home and got my camera and started taking photos.  Got a couple of submitable ones too :)  Then later i took a few with my little studio set up.... my studio consists of a light with some tracing paper over it...and... well thats all really.  I just find some sort of background like my sketchbook or something.

I had them printed but in my previous experiences, the machines have defaulted to print 4x6 inch photos - but this machine i used defaulted to 4.5x6 inch which i didnt realise.  Anyway, i had no idea and came back a couple of hours later to find them printed with a white border on top and bottom with the edges cropped off! :no:

talking to myself obviously since no one's actually reading this.  But still, finally got it set up properly after submitting my user name with a typo in the join page and then trying to figure out what was wrong for about 15 minutes.

It's all worked out now though and here i am.  I might put some of my photos on here and get some sleep since its almost 4am!
