Alright. So, I'm trying to make tutorials for practice in case I do some teaching this fall. I wanted to submit them here for help, but I'm doing them in word for lack of any other program. I posted one here ages ago, but misplaced in under dA tutorials, and that would take a .doc file. Where am I supposed to put how-tos (I was told there was an artisancraft tutorial subcategory, but I can't find it...), and how do I get it to accept my files?

So there's the problem, and me and technology don't get along very well, so if you've any ideas, please leave them here. And use small words...

Oh, and I can't edit my features much because dA isn't letting me browse my own folders or gallery. Any ideas on that one?

Wish I could say I was off for anything of interest, but nope. Just was too ticked at DA's usual lack of help with technical issues and my own inability to get any projects to go well. Or photograph well. Was also hamprered by that whole MS update not getting along with virus protection. There were warnings online, but gosh, if you can't get online that's hard to check. *facepalm* So yeah, failure of a summer but hopefully I'll eventually catch up on pretty art and find suitable distraction...

Is there any standard or program to help you edit photos to the correct lightness for actual real life printing?

Seeing as I've already helped my mother go through a disturbingly large amount of photos and tried to help her balance the lighting a bit it's sort of a case of locking the barn door after the horse is out. Thought I'd ask though. I was trying to get some decent prints of my dolls and wraps and such to have a bit of a portfolio going, but what looks fine to a bit light on my laptop looks too dark on my parents pc and I've no clue which would be more accurate to the printed page. Ideas or tips anyone?

Hit the craft and antique shows between work this weekend. Another way you can tell spring is coming! Better than robins, handmade antique show signs are. Saw neat things, eyeballed things to try to make, the usual.

Had two standouts, one of the jewelers at the craft show was really fantastic (seemed like a nice guy too, chatted for a bit) he just had an unusual style, made me think of the mesoamerican empires. His website's [link] I'm not big on all of the stones, but the guy has some serious wire control skills. My other standout was a bit of an impulse buy at the antique show. Old watch, supposedly 20s. Looks like a watch stuck in a crystal marble. The front is magnified with a glass half sphere, ditto the back. So you can see the movement. Has a band around it with a loop. Anyone know anything about watches? It's the first I've had that you need to wind, and it doesn't seem to be keeping time so well, but I don't know if they need to get back into the habit of functioning after not having been wound for sometime, or if I ought to hit the jewelers to see if I can get the guts cleaned. Ideas?

Thunderstorm raging outside. I'm just hoping it gets the rain out of its system NOW. Because this weekend all my plans are outdoors.

Since I've a friend coming from out of town I've been cleaning this week. Tried to salvage my garb, not going so well, the skirt I tried to lengthen shrunk a bit in the wash (yes I used cold!) and I'm still having trouble with ubertarnish (my skin is just toxic, I swear). I have some nicer fair costume jewlery as it were, but that doesn't go wiht the peasant/wench look. So, I get all I can done, and pack away as much as my craft crap as I can. Which makes for an excellent reminder just how much junk and how many WIPs I have.

Then find out she needs to fix up her garb. Which is fine, but it means I'm going to have to haul everything out again.

That's the last time I try to be good and clean for company!!!

(Of course, the dusting really had to be done...)

Ah, but to my request, everyone be really nice to the weather demons and hope for good weather for us, last time this friend came we had storms all weekend and couldn't get to the fairs. (I think of Clavin and wonder if burning leaves would work as a sacrifice, but they're too wet right now...)

To my shame I had to go online to look it up, I'd forgotten who sang it and was thinking Marvin Gaye. Oops.

"For What It's Worth" (1966)
Buffalo Springfield

There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Work keeps getting worse, and me sending out more and more resumes is still not getting me anywhere.

I'm just so bloody annoyed (and tired and angry etc).

I spend the whole freaking day since I got out of work writing cover letters (I'll take hints on those too if anybody has some- why can't they teach us useful things like that in HS rather than say, typing on antiquated programs or calculus?) and then my mother comes and demands my presence, asks how my day was, I tell her, then she tells me that I'd better start pounding the sidewalks. What the FUCK does she think I'm doing surrounded my want ads and printing my resume?

So I have no good cover letter for the job I want most. *sigh* I've only been at it two hours.

ps- Is anyone having trouble with not being able to reply to cmments? It keeps flipping out on me.

pps- Everytime I go to reply it does the having a problem try in a few minutes thing and goes grey. I just realized it's been sending the replys though it says it hasn't. HUH?! Anyone else having this issue either? I swear the site's mad at me for not spending enough quality time with it!

Alrighty, got back froma bead show, went to finish a mini project. Had to liberate a clasp from an old project, cut the wie it was on, heard snap. Ducked. Snippet of tiger tail went flying, spring ring went flying. Had dinner, found another spring ring, went to cut chain...

The big snap was apparently half the jaw of my flush cut wirecutters. So all you jewelry folk out there. What are the best quality tools you've used. I've been doing this long enough I might as well splurge and get the good stuff and spare my wrists that much, or at least put them on my holiday list...

So, suggestions? Please?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, finally found a number to call and I got my delay.

So everyone cross your fingers my call in the next few weeks/months doesn't conflict with my three day weekend mini vacations I have planned to meet with friends through the fall. And keep thinking of ways to get me thrown off the jury.

I'm really relieved, but I'm still kind of fried from freaking out about this. I know it's silly, but there you go. I've been having nightmares about it. (As well as the usual work ones.)

So trying frantic last minute projects for the con. We'll see if any of it pans out. Feels like a lot of spinning wheels and getting nowhere. You forget how long each thing takes till you have a dealine.

And after the con, last minute HP crafty stuff for work. Last book, last party, gotta make it the best. (Hey, it's retail, I need to take my pride in it where I can )

Not only did I get called for jury duty.

Which my company will not pay me for.

It's in the middle of my vacation.

Which I took so I could try to sell my dolls at connecticon.

And if I deferr it I can't deferr it again so have to worry about missing my friend's wedding this fall and fucking up any chance I have of starting a new job.

FUCK doesn't cover it.

I was trying to go to bed at a half normal hour tonight.

Not gonna happen.

Have to try to compose letter and hope it reaches the right person and the judge pretends to give a fuck.

Then cross fingers.

And not sleep.

My dad suggested I ask how serious a crime I need to commit to never be eligible for jury duty ever again. Or at least use it as a threat against any particularly lousy customers.

How come some people never get called and I get it twice in a few years?

Why don't they get people who'll at least get paid.

The cheap bastards didn't even reimburse my parking costs or pay me for showing up to selection from last time.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even better, it's Federal duty.

Feels like a joke really, the government gives you only three weeks notice-there's no reason to cut it that short, then tells you to reply in five days.

Oh, and the pull off form that you have to send back? It doesn't fit in the envelope they give you to send it back it....

If it were funny it'd be a great joke.

Hit Philly for monsoon season apparently. If you're thinking of heading to the much hyped Tut exhibit, don't. Very not worth the money or travel (Wasn't day trip-able for me). The Met, Boston's MFA, the British Museum all have better permanent Egyptian exhibits. I'm sure plenty others do too. The pieces were quite high quality, but only 2 dozen small objects from the tomb itself. The symbol for the exhibition is the mask, but they didn't bring one of the several sarcophagi.

Gosh, morbid enough?

My big excitement was finding a Wegman's supermarket when I got lost. No. Really. Highlight of the day. (Jenn, I figure you're the only one here to get that. This one was all upscale and stuff...)

Visited family on LBI. Nice antique places, if you're an east coaster it might be worth a trip in a month or two (when more places are open.) Awesome fresh fish.

Oh, and now a serenade with an old poem I found on my hard drive. A few weeks out of season perhaps.

I've been remiss in my duty, figured I ought to move the features closer to the top.
You are The High Priestess

Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.
The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.
I'm still having issues with devart not showing properly. Unlikely to have anything finished anytime soon. Projects misbehaving is one thing, clumsiness is another. I had two days in a row off (very rare) and though, great, I'll try to get stuff done.

Lo and behold, I go out, lose my footing and end up rolling down some cement stairs. It's not pc, but I love my leather jacket. It took a good edge of the fall off, so I'm bruised, but pretty lucky. No blood loss. For me that's fairly good Screwed up wrist and elbow, shoulder, etc means I shouldn't be typing either. But I was going stir crazy trying to just watch tv. Had to do *something* and this seemed a lesser evil than my other hobbies. Still, anyone got good tips besides frozen peas to lessen swelling?

don't get me wrong, i was half finished with the presents part by january or march. only my difficult to shop for father and grandmother left to go. (and mother, but that's more trying to do crafty gifts on the sly, which is a year round battle!!!)

soooo not ready for the ladedah attitude of we're the only group in this country, agree with us, celebrate our holiday or shut the hell up. my company also ended up taking more of that tack than usual this year, and while i'm trying to quietly change things in our store a tiny bit, i really need to figure out who i can complain to in corporate without getting fired.

also soooo not ready for the what do you mean you can't get that in time, it was on oprah, or the well, it's a christmas book and it's red, why don't you know the one i mean, or the you're going to ruin my holiday if you don't find this book/cd/game.

okay, two questions.

one- why is it acceptable for a black woman to call me racist for not having a section of books only by black authors, whereas if i went into a store looking for books by white authors only i'd be shot? (besides, if you called it african-american they might have to let white south africans in to?) or to ask me what color the author is if you don't know? for the record, unless there's a photo in the back, i have no clue what race the author is. occasionally i'm not even sure on what gender...

two- the odder one. i was rereading an old terry pratchett book and in one part a character mentioned a guy putting weasels down his trousers for entertainment. which called to mind a part of a neil gaiman short story where said event occured.---is there some odd brit cultural ref here that i'm just totally missing? or are the authors i like just very strange? (okay, i'm aware that's probably true either way, and since they're friends i guess it could be a running joke...)

i finally get two days off in a row without requesting it, and what happens? my cold gets worse. it's not like i'm dying, just sore and cranky and sound like i've the plague. got odd looks from customers at work. can't get to sleep. so apparently it'll be an even longer while before i get anything good posted. *sigh*

okay, i'm not sure which is more frustrating- being pissed at myself that my old garb isn't fitting well because i gained too much weight, or being pissed at myself that my newer garb isn't fitting well because i suck at adjusting patterns.

so, since the weight loss attempts tend to end in failure and depression, any of the sewers out there have some good tips for fitting patterns?

(oh, and also quasi historically accurate styles that you don't have to wrench your back to lace up?! i tried like six bodices on today and i'm still sore from all the damn twisting to lace up...)

on another sewing note, a good chunk of my etsy listings expire this month. so a number of the dolls are up at seriously reduced prices right now. doll costumes are so much easier, you can make the body to fit i wish do it at home nick and tuck were as doable...

my denim purses are also at reduced prices and free shipping too. (come on, you know you want a last minute summer style bag )
