This Thursday August 13 I'm going to try to have my first schedule Livestream broadcast on tellyMaiji [link] at 7pm EST (GMT-5). It may start a bit earlier depending on what time I actually get home from work :{ but the idea is that having this scheduled time(s) each week will hopefully help me move forward on some multi-part art projects. So it might be a bit unexciting (especially in the beginning when you can't see much) as I'll probably be doing lots of sketching and finetuning as I go along, and there is a nice chat feature (and hopefully I don't lag too much lol)

So, the project. This first one is kinda long, nowhere near the scale of the Valkyrie Profile Tarot I did years ago (when I had way more time) but somewhat similar. The idea is a Second Story Oracle which is a Star Ocean 2 fanart project based on the idea of a Tarot-inspired deck. There will be 15 images: original 12 playable characters plus 2 NPCs I most wanted to join my party from the original game, as well as a card back. The cards will be numbered according to the order in which you encounter the characters (with the exception of the 2 NPCs who will just be at the end).

Also, as I've mentioned before on LJ, it always bothered me that for coming from over three different planets at various levels of development, the character designs looked too consistent. I'm hoping to somewhat redesign the characters as well so that each group has a more distinctive look as follows:

Expellians - medieval with a bit of an Asian twist when possible
Federation members (Earth, Tetragrene) - clearly SF (ultramodern) appearance
Nedians - almost Atlantean? I haven't quite figured this out yet, but only three cards will really need to take this into consideration.

To keep the designs cohesive I may try to draw all the people from the same group one after the other (e.g. all Expellians first) but that's pretty hard to say.

That about sums up the concept - and that's the hope anyways. XD The first card will be 02 THE MAIDEN gee guess who that is. I've pretty much figured out the general composition and outfit redesign (not too different) but I have no idea how long this will take XDD I just have to figure out if I want some sort of consistent background style/border theme by the time Thursday rolls around ack.

A HUNDRED QUESTIONS. LET'S GO.

01. What is your pen name?
Maiji. It is a fat little squirrel that rules the universe as its squirrel queen. For you see, all things in the universe are made up of maijis. Like atoms, for instance. Atoms are maijis running in hamster wheels.

02. What made you choose this name?
I honestly don't have a clue. It was something I came up with to put as a chat handle when I was in elementary school and really into the Yu Yu Hakusho fandom. Pretty boring story, just pretend it was a lighting bolt of intuition regarding the nature of the universe (see above).

03. Do you use PC or Mac?
PC. Used Macs in school, but I can't justify the cost of buying a Mac when a PC can do everything I need to do and then some.

04. What programs do you use most often?
For art, that would be Paint Shop Pro (image editing) and Corel Painter (digital painting).

05. Do you use mouse, or tablet?
Tablet. I try not to invite carpal tunnel ...

06. What color or color combinations do you ... (Note: this question was cut off, so I'll assume it was asking what I like)
You know, when I was younger, I always used to say that my favourite colour was blue, and then narrowed it down to a silvery blue. But that hasn't really been the case for a long time. I've come to appreciate pretty much all colours, and try to use a lot of them in my art as well. There are things about each of them I appreciate in terms of creating a mood, an ambience. I think if I had to pick "one colour", I might say a light, cheery daffodil yellow or a fresh, minty-tea green for the associations I have. But I do understand why my mom always used to say her favourite colour was rainbow.

07. What part of a picture do you put most effort into?
The face. I try to put more effect into my backgrounds (I try to think of them more as environments), but I can't help but spend a lot of time on the face. As humans we naturally gravitate towards that since it was always such a big part of survival and success, being able to read faces, and if a face is a bit messed up, you can't help but notice it in a picture.

08. How long does it take you do draw a picture?
Anywhere from ten seconds to forever.

09. Do you keep your rough drafts?
I try to. I'm a sucker for saving different images throughout the stages of development as well. I like seeing snapshots of things in progress, stuff "behind the scenes" so to speak.

10. What font do you use most often?
I use Myriad Pro at work a lot, but it's kind of the corporate font so ... it does translate into my personal work though, since I get so used to seeing the look of it. I also use Arial, Verdana and Georgia in websites, BM Mini on my images (for byline/credit and whatnot)

11. When you scan your image, what DPI do you use?
300 dpi out of habit, sketches at much lower, like 100.

12. Do you do anything else when you're drawing?
Listen to music, chat, surf the net ... I get distracted pretty easily.

13. Approximately how many pictures do you draw in a month?
Oh gosh. Like 1.5 lol. If we're talking full-on polished "finished" pieces. I doodle much more though.

14. What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
For digital works they're usually roughed out in my sketchbook. For watercolour pieces they are completed on a variety of grades ... I like coldpress for the texture, but I've also done watercolour paintings on cotton paper (depending on the stock, not necessarily the smartest idea lol)

15. What kind of paper do you use for rough sketches and drafts?
Sketchbook, whatever paper.

16. How long does it take you to ink something?
For freaking ever. At least that's what it feels like.

17. Do you do comics, or fan comics?
Yup!

18. Do you like comics? Are they fun to make?
Absolutely! Love sequential art, love seeing what truly skilled people can do to make still images come to life. It's amazing! Making them is fun too, although of course there's definitely a planning process involved in it that I sometimes find discouraging simply because I can't always find the focus/time to really get down to it.

19. Have you ever submitted anything to a magazine?
You know, I'm actually not sure. When I was little my mom used to enter my stuff into contests and things. I can't remember actually submitting any of my art to a magazine though.

21. Who are your favorite artists?
So many people. A couple of names off the top of my head:

For those who don't already know, the Doujinka Festival [link] is being held August 16th from 11am to 8pm at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre! It's the first event of its kind here and for people like me who loooove Artist Alleys and would love to go to Comiket in Japan someday ;-; it's so exciting to have a venue like this! There are still tables available so if you're going to be in the GTA area of Ontario, Canada, please do check it out!

Ahhh it's been insanely busy. I bought a condo (!) and we will be moving at the end of this month. On top of that, work, and getting ready for both DJka fest and FanExpo, AND doing art for a special project = one tired squirrel.

Believe it or not I actually haven't been slacking in art. I've been working with two friends on making an original artbook of totally new pieces Hopefully we will be done soon and have nice previews and things for everyone to see! ^^

Just little notebooks that you could throw into a purse or put in your pocket and jot down some quick notes or doodles.

My work place has a lot of awesome paper samples and swatchbooks that usually just end up being tossed/recycled, and plus we recently moved so there is a lot of obsolete letterhead/stationery ... I thought it would be neat to make some notebooks out of them because they are really lovely and nice quality papers that designers love to use, it's a shame to just get rid of it like that!

I've got a layout setup for four different cover designs, and I have 3/4 done. For the last one, I was thinking of maybe using an existing artwork, either the full image or a portion of it depending on the size.

SOOO the question I have is: Out of all my pictures I've done, here on dA or elsewhere (my website [link] or even my Tegaki e [link] I guess lol ... I doubt it haha) what would you like to see as a notebook cover?

Seriously though, the end of 2007 was pretty crazy in terms of work. I love my job and my boss and coworkers are some of the most awesome people ever, but it was definitely busy. Starting next week I'll actually be working from a completely different location (and a totally new building! I should not be this excited about getting my own comfy cubicle with walls to decorate, but I am XD /loser). Anyways, the short of it is that hopefully things will be settling down somewhat in terms of the weekends so I will be able to concentrate more on fun little art projects and comics and stuff like that. Whee.

I have been doing lots of silly openCanvas doodling/designing exercises with my friend orangisque though. They turn out SO ridiculous, but are great fun and really help you to stretch your creative thinking by imposing specific rules you need to work with. Here they are:

GAME 1
Each person thinks of a random word separately, then types them at the same time, and both then have to draw a picture based on the combined prompt.

GAME 2
joint effort design based on a character stereotype or archetype - e.g. one person does the hair and face, the other designs the clothes, combined colouring

Results: [link] ("a princely type character" and "a goddess of some sort" - we actually cleaned this one up so it's not as covered with stupid comments as the others XD)

GAME 3
Each person draws a separate hairstyle based on a theme without peeking at the other person's. THEN THE TWO HAIRSTYLES MUST BE COMBINED FOR SUPREME AWESOMENESS (can be extended to the rest of the design as well)

GAME 4
Using a theme list (we used a printed one haha) one person (who does not see the list) picks a random number and then both must combine their skills to create a single cohesive image fitting that theme.

GAME 5
Using a random generator (we used the fangirl fantasy generator at Seventh Sanctum [link] for epic lulz), one person chooses a number and each person hits the generator that number of times. Whatever comes out must be drawn by the other person.

Results: Sadly we only have our third set of themes as the program crashed during our drawings of the first two sets of themes we got T-T

(bottom right: orangisque) The tactful elf. His mysterious eyes are slate grey. His long and luxurious hair is the colour of fine gold. His clothes are imaginative. He has a preference for blue, and he has a thing for TIGHT pants and leather boots (which sadly did not fit into the picture ...

Thank you so much, for suggesting Thunderwall as a DD. Personally what a DD "means" doesn't stand as high with me these days as when I first started on dA, but the fact that someone likes my work enough to take the extra time to recommend it for something is one of the nicest kinds of appreciation I could ever get for my work. ^^ It means a lot to me! And totally inflates my head, so if you see a giant squirrel balloon billowing through the sky, it's probably ... XD

I've been quite busy and not particularly active on dA, mainly because I haven't had much time to work on new art. I graduated from university last month and started working full-time in a really fantastic Sales and Marketing position at a great company ^^ I also have more time in the sense that the weekends are my own instead of at the mercy of X number of projects and studying for this or that, so I'm very very happy. I have some art ideas I would like to work on, so hopefully I will be updating my gallery a little more often.

Thanks to everyone who has commented on my pieces and continues to look at my art; I always love to get feedback and thoughts on my work, and knowing that there are people who appreciate your work is one of the best things an artist can have. ^^

I don't understand the choice behind that, and I don't particularly like it. It's always been a pet peeve of mine when people ask questions that are easily answered in the artist's comments, and it's always been hard enough getting people to read them as it is, so with the apparent shift ... haha, it's such a little thing, but I dunno, I've always considered background very important (not to mention fascinating), so it's a bit of an annoyance. I'm used to having the other brand that has a hole in the back end, so I can just pull the forwarding button/clip thing to the back and pull it out. But this one has a white cap on the back end that I can't seem to pry off. It shouldn't be this difficult!!! RARRRR

EDIT: Never mind, my sis got it out with a thumbtack. How un-userfriendly! xO Anyone have better recommendations? As soon as I use up the three eraser refills I have for this thing, I'm off to find a better brand of $1.50 refillable pen eraser XDDD

This is part of the picture for the MAG thingy; I have to have it done for Friday Is it okay? It's supposed to be like ... a game box cover. XD Ignore the text for now, it's all just positioning/composition and such. Does it look okay?

I'm thinking of making it very dark; Foil (big head), Clare (upside-down girl), the mirror (that circle dealie in the corner), Squeak (little batwinged dragon you can see by the mirror and Clare's leg) will be in the "foreground" - that is, they will be coloured fairly normally and boldly. Everything else (Verge in the top right corner, Nefa and Gunther in the bottom left) will be in the "background", and they will sort of blend into the bg in one colour. Kind of like how on Suikoden covers, you have all these characters in the background, but their colouring is completely desaturated so that they don't stand out. (Except here they will all be really dark so they don't stand out XD; Hope that makes sense x___X;;;

If anyone is wondering where Rucafell/Andu/Nescen etc. are, they'll be there, just not in this part of the picture XD;; ]]> ~maiji
