Hello everyone!

I hope you're doing great! It's been a while since I updated my journal. My time is really limited and I barely have the chance to make freebies like I used to make before. Hang in there! I have a big christmas gift for you all though.

Anyway... This is just a quick update to let you know that I'm gonna move to Shanghai in 2 weeks and spend some kick-ass time over there working for a huge worldwide company doing mostly Art Direction and some UI/UX Design.

I'm really proud of myself and this upcoming experience is gonna be a huge challenge for me, since I haven't live all by myself in several years, due to the complete failure the last time I've tried. LOL.

What else should I add? I'm in love with a super-awesome girl, my work is going great, my musical project is 90% complete and I hate Twilight.

In the last month I've been distant from all the online activities. I mostly update my twitter [link] (add me and I'll add you back!), so in case you wanna know what I'm up with, drop me a "follow" over there haha.

So... what happened in this month?

You're aware of all the swine flu shit, right? Well, turns out that I was one of the suspicious "cases" in the hospital a few weeks ago, since I had a lung infection what refused to die. Stupid bacteria! I was on the hospital for a while and the doctors did a good job, although I felt like crap (and I still do).

One of the positive points is that I don't smoke anymore, haha. Finally!

Well, on the work side, I've been really busy with lots of things. After that week in the hospital I had to catch up with delayed projects including some stuff for ^snowmask and other cool clients.

This month has been awesome. I signed with CoolIris, Avid and Education First. More cool clients to Banicci's collection!

I know the dA profile for *banicci haven't been updated in a while, but hey, I have around 20 things to post over there, so be ready to give us a watch over there and get lots of freebies.

I also worked on a couple of Desktopography 2009 projects, which I think you will enjoy when gets released. Stay tuned on =wirestyle journals for more information about the event. Of course, you will have a sneak peek here soon!

So, what you guys have been up to? I'd love to hear what I've missed in all this time.

Hello my fancy watchers!

My review of dA's Artist Bag

My Review of dA's Artist Bag [link]

Considering I'm an addict to dA related stuff, I'm a proud owner of lots of things from the shop including devWEAR, Prints, Mugs, Buttons, etc. I never had the chance to buy the Laptop Messenger Bag, so I finally decided to get myself the artist bag [link] .

I wasn't sure of buying it with all the extras I saw available, but somehow, $liquisoft convinced me that it was a really cool bag and I should get it. After getting my order, this is my experience from the Shopping, Shipping and Unboxing of my new bag (with several extras). This is a small review that I hope you enjoy. It doesn't intend to advertise or anything, but just give a proper opinion about what I received.

The Shopping/Shipping experience

While shopping here on dA can be easy and very intuitive, there were minor issues once I paid for my order. There was a delay of around 1 week before my order got shipped from dA facilities. This wasn't a problem at all, and as long as I've been told, it was a normal timing considering the ammount of orders they receive.

With my invoice from dA, the FedEx tracking number told me where my order was each day, which was awesome. After a few days and with minor delays (blame FedEx), I received my bag without any issues.

The Unboxing/Assembling

I was surprised by the size of the bag, since it looked bigger on the pics at the shop, but once I filled it with the extras I bought (like the wacom sleeve, shoulder strap, etc) it really looked big. Once I added one of the flaps I bought (I got 2 of them), the bag looked awesome an giant.

I put my wacom, wires, phone, camera, pencils, markers, 3 books, 17" Laptop + charger and my deviantART green cap there without any problems. Everything fits tight and very protected. The soft areas on the bag are awesome and they will keep my stuff safe, I hope

The bags are manufacturated by Brenthaven [link] and customized by deviantART. The bags comes with a lifetime warranty and the quality is above any bags I've had (and I have a really good one, that costed me around $150. This one beats it Fo' sho).

The veredict

Carrying it is an orgasmic experience...

And all the amount of work I have to get done, I'm affraid I haven't had the chance to watch the season finale yet. I totally missed it last wed, and now I gotta... umm... get it on the net. lulz.

So... this journal is just a short break I took from a project I'm doing for miss Katie & Mr. Keith. This is indented just to share a personal opinion, and not to start any discussion or a ZOMG SPOILER forum. lol.

If you're willing to comment here, awesome! Just don't ruin the season finale if you have watched it already.

Why I love LOST so much?

Starting from the fact that the TV Show is based on a bunch of survivors of a plane crash on an island, that tagline already tempts me to know more about the story, since the Humans are always curious about what other people would do in really dangerous or dramatical situations. The vouyerism on other people's experiences and suffering when "is not happening to you" is something ackward that is always present on most people's minds, and that was one of the reasons I started to watch LOST a few years ago.

Since it started... I always felt a big ammount of mistery on the show. I'm an open mind person, and I always expect weird things to happen without explanation, and this show fits me perfectly. lolz.

I really loved the characters at the very first episode of it, and it's awesome to see how each one of them (the one that survived) has evolved to what they are right now. If I would have known at the beggining how complicated the storyline were gonna be and how frustrating it was going to be, I'd probably haven't watched it at all, but I was curious, and I watched the pilot years ago. Now I just can't stop watching it, and considering I have to wait till 2010 to see what happens next simply makes me tear. lol.

It's amazing to see how the storyline gets so confusing but "logical" at the same time, since the writters and producers manages to tell the story in blocks and let you know the secret information months later, right when you had a lot of theories that gets bashed by the true story behind them.

The classical romance scenes are common aswell, but the main storyline is always on top of any other things among the scripts, which makes the show to focus on what they meant to. The island!

Comparing it to other series, I really have to admire a TV show like this one, and I'm sure there won't be a similar product...

The Ten Tenors.

I recently bought a dvd of this Aussie band of singers called "The Ten Tenors". The DVD "Here's to the Heroes" is a live performance at Germany. As a musician, I always enjoy different kind of styles, voices, rythms, genres in overall.

I must say I'm impressed by them, and I really like theyr style. Originally, I thought it could be a cheap copy of Il Divo, but after watching the whole DVD a few times (yes, actually, around 5 times the whole show) I realize they have a lot more of diversity in terms of arrangements and style.

Why some "designers" make us look cheap?

People used to think that a design career wasn't really a good option to pick among several engineering or economic sciences...

Now it's completely different.

Why should people pay for "design"?

To make it short... we're not here to change the world. We're here to make things look beautiful.

Let's say for example, if I charge $400 for a logo or $800 to build a standard website, or $250 for a single icon... do you think a client would pick me for my pricing if they have another one charging them less than $500 for the whole package?

I've seen people selling themselves for $20 to do a logo. $200 to do a website. What kind of attitude is that?

Have you seen those cheap "comic sans" logos? Or those default-layer-styled signs? They are invading slowly the market lately, and the current crisis around the globe is not helping at all, since all the people that needs "professional" graphic work is now looking for the cheapest options available.

Speculative work aka "send me some drafts"

What about the people that request several "sketches" or "drafts" to see if you are "good enough" to be hired by them? What about logo contests? Many times they just take the best concepts (if there is any) and hire a designer (usually a junior) to just re-draw the idea.

In other exceptional cases, people end paying a "standard" price for a logo. Well... Why take so long deciding among drafts to end up paying the standard rates when you can pay the standard price and get a great logo in a more professional way.

The approach these people are pursuing is one that seriously compromises the quality of work they are entitled to and also violates a tacit, long-standing ethical standard in the communication design profession worldwide.

Capable and professional designers do not work for free, and requesting work for free demonstrates a lack of understanding and respect. There is an appropriate way to explore the work of various designers, and requesting drafts or opening contests to see if "there is an option we like" is just plain un-ethical.

Just my two cents on this matter. Thanks to AIGA for the references!

So... what are your thoughts on this matter? I'm open minded right now. i saw an UFO, so I'm ready for anything coming up. lol.

2 days after the "incident", a local University located in one of the Valleys of my city said "their students were developing a wheater monitoring device", and that "balloon" was launched right before my eyes. Silly me and other lots of people that thought it was a UFO.

Ecuador's Latest News

Ecuadorian president Rafel Correa was elected again the last sunday. Guess what. Among all the other candidates, he won in the first "round" of the elections, with more than 51% of the total votes. Yay him! I'm not a big fan of the methods he uses to handle our poor country, but he is doing way better than the previous 10 presidents we had.

He is like our Obama.

Wait. What?

I saw an UFO. For real.

Although I always believed in these things, I never had the chance to see an UFO by myself, until today! Seems like people tend to think the ufo sightings has something related to wheater measurement devices, experimental aircraft, drugs, etc. Believe me when I say I wasn't on drugs at all (I've been clean for the last 26 years of my life. And I'm 26. lol).

Long version follows as:

I was going out from the University I'm a teacher at, so I get into my car and start driving back home. Since there is a lot of traffic here at 5pm, I decided to take another way that goes down to a river and then connects to a big freeway so I could "flank" the main city and get home faster. It usually takes me 15 minutes to get home from there.

It started to rain suddenly, a lot (it's common here in Ecuador), and at some point of the road, there was so many rain fallin that I had to slow down to keep the car steady on those deadly turns.

In front of me there was another 3 cars on different lanes of the freeway and since the road is on a cliff side, you can see the valleys from the car while you drive. Awesometastic.

So anyway... as soon as we get a big turn to the right, just at the exact moment where the main valley appears on the eyesight, a big UFO was leaving through the damn woods. It was so freaky for all of us (the drivers) that the cars in front of me started to freak...

Once upon a time...

I was a teacher. Then I wasn't. Now I am again.

Yay me! I'm teaching several subjects at the Metropolitan Institute of Design, here in Ecuador. It is the most traditional art college here, and the 70% of the professional designers on my country studied there. It's been a great experience so far in the last 2 weeks, and there are cool things ahead.

A funny thing that happened was... Picture this lol:

I was walking "manly", trying to hide my nervous mood because of the big experience of being a teacher there... so there I was, walking in the classroom where 23 students were waiting for me.

I walk in.

Everyone shuts up... Uncomfy silence Then one of the students goes "No way!" I tell him "No way what." and he replies "YOU ARE MANICHO!"

Around the 50% of the class goes like " " while the other half is like " ". One of the unimpressed guys says "What? Who?" and then the first eagered dude says:

-"The wallpaper guy".

The whole class went crazy and I felt like a pornstart

Working as your own boss
can be awesome. You can manage your own schedule, your own time, your own clients, your own everything!

It took me long time working here and there, jumping from a small studio to a giant corporation, going through a channel station and even a news radio

BUT... Everything has pros and cons.

So what am I writing this? Because I know many people would like to freelance 24/7 and get money from their chairs at home, working on what they love and being paid for stuff they really like to do!

As an advice, I'll tell you about my own drama in the last months lol.

The goods: Your own time and good $$$

Since I've worked online for a big advertising company in Kuwait, another in US and another in Spain, most of my day I was sitting working and designing and designing and... designing.

I loved it! It was like a dream lol I had to quit my job as university teacher and part-time consultor on a local agency.

I was at home, with my family and my girl, and she handled all my accounts and balance pretty good.

BUT. BUT. BUTT. The bads.

Most of the projects were small enough to give me the chance to handle everything with responsability, accurate timing and great quality. The bad thing about it (and I didn't consider that part) was the fact my brain wasn't doing a good job after some months with that workflow.

My ideas got stuck, my designs started to feel recursive and out of shape, and I started to spend more and more time on the same things I used to rush in only a few minutes. How can it be possible? Because you need to take a break sometimes.

Talking about art can be subjetive, since many conceptual ideas can't be expressed accurately if you don't have a clear idea of how to handle the technique and the communication concepts through your designs. Imagine your brain is working at less speed and spreadage... RIGHT! you suck. LOL

So... On a normal day my schedule was: I get up in the morning to work. I take breakfast. I get back to work. I have lunch. I get back to work. I go to university. I get back home and do homeworks and assignments. I get back to work. I go to bed and sleep.

Next day the same. 5 days a week. 4 weeks a month. Around 11 months per year.

Yes! Money can be really good (more than you can even expect, sometimes). But then I felt like I was working too much and...

Oonce upon a time...
My friend ^snowmask did a DAMN AWESOME avatar for me! It was made following my strict guidelines (my bad lol).

So... the avatar got removed for "violating" some stuff that I wasn't aware off, apparently.

After seeing gore, blood, close up penis and vaginas as "art", I thought... "Damn, my pixel avatar is not that bad after all" since there was ppl that didn't even know what the hell was goin on my 50x50 thing. I'm not gonna tell if you never saw it btw.

So... anyway. The last week... baam. Manicho is suspended. lol

I think it's kinda dumb from me and kinda harsh from the dA side, but I'm not gonna rant about it

Today I'm gonna talk about LOST.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, please leave a comment with much love for me anyway

I remember those days where the first season of LOST started to broadcast on my country. It was catchy, misterious and it even had a touch of "Survivor", an ancient reality show that was big hit on TV. After several weeks and many episodes, I started to fall in love with the way the Writters/Producers handled the series. Enigmatic "random" events weren't that random, and each of those moments had a big influence on other things that kept happening on the Island (and "outside").

As the 1st season advanced, the action scenes were starting to get more and more evident, which was a signal of something bigger coming ahead. But then, it didn't happen anything bigger, but GIGANTIC. Once again, the writters/producers slapped me in the face with mindblowing scripts that fucked up all my theories about "what the hell is goin on" or the famous question "Guys... where are we?"

The 2nd and 3rd season revealed so much info about the place and all of their characters that I thought the end was near, since the Series didn't have any path to keep goin'.

I was wrong.

The 4th season came back loaded with more confusing stuff. It even made millions of people in the world to dump the series and start watching other stuff lol (because of the OH-SHIT-CONFUSING stories). The 4th season was my favourite, because of the way the series were being told.

The bad bad bad bad writters decided to stop working for some legal and financial stuff, so many series (LOST included), only had a few episodes last year. Aside from that, the cropped story told on the 4th season was even more confusing, while it kept closing other misteries on the Island that weren't that important at that stage.

And now...

LOST season 5 started. After 5 years, the producers still know how to trick our minds, how to make us drop our jaws and how...

Then, Bees created honey with their asses.
After that, honey created Cake, which was as lie.
Since Cake was a lie, god killed Bees.
In the six day everything was drama about it.

Holy Bonsai! My new CSS is ALIVE.

As you might know... I've been trying to code this CSS for a long time, but I failed succesfuly. BUT... The best CSS coder on deviantART =AimanStudio helped me and now it's finished!

I must admit, this is the sexiest CSS I ever designed, and only Aiman could have coded it so perfectly. Be sure to go HUMP him!

Man! 2008 was a year full of bright surprises for me. There are a lot of things that happened in my life that I'd never have expected before.

Well, I want to bore you to death, so... here is a list of some of the goods and the bads of 2008.

The goods
$4500 in January, good start lol
2 Online jobs kept me busy and happy
1 lovely girl called Bel kept me happy and "in shape"
My music band is famous, finally
My 20yo sister married my best friend Charlie

The bads

A sharpy edge almost kills me
I broke up with Bel
I broke my finger
My car is getting old (1997 lol)
My dad is still working at Chicago

Hello!

I found some free time today and I feel like writing a journal!

Things are going great for me this year. I'm happy with my new Senior Designer job at Spectacle Media & Advertising Co.. This was a job opportunity that *waelalbenali, a very good friend, made possible.

My family is doing good, my girl is amazing, my dogs are smelly, my mouse is dusty, my belly is growing (lol) and my music talent is getting better than ever mwahaha.

Well, on the artistic side, I gotta admit that I haven't been really in touch with the dA Community as I used to be. Lately, it's been difficult to find myself doing free artwork like before. I have some projects that takes out my time, and some other minor real-life things that I gotta deal with.

I just made a collab with my brother, Kev Harris aka =hypoxic that I'd like you to check. I hope you like it!

Hello!

Do you still remember me?

Well I've been really busy lately, my University studies are really though lately and I'm always rushing to get done my homeworks and freelance projects, since I'm not working full time anymore.

Apparently, I've missed a lot of stuff here in the last month! Hehe, don't worry! I'll catch up with everything and I'll start to post goodies again in a short time. Just bare with me

On another news, the new iPhone 2.0 update is amazing, and I already got several stuff from the AppStore. I'm impressed of how good are the apps there, compared to the ugly-designed Jailbroken stuff I used to get from Installer.app or Cydia.app

Anyway, until a decent customization app appears on scene, I think the themes/wallpapers for iPhone I had in mind to release, will have to wait a bit more

Once upon a time...

I was a Gallery Director.

I was used to see a report desk where we received a lot of reports of miscats, and many times, the person that made the report was the same one in a specific category.

For example: =AndrewDBarker used to report like 50 miscats each week, which was really amazing and very helpful.

Although I don't know how the Help Desk or the Copyright Violation Desk works, I'm sure it does in a similar way, where the staff in charge of Copyright issues has to look at the reported deviations and find out where the copyright infringment was done.

Sooooo...

The thing that fucking pisses me at this point, is that one of my BEST FRIENDS here on deviantART, Chris aka *Psychopulse, decided to leave deviantART and delete almost all his deviations.

Why? Because some retard reported a COLLABORATION I did with him ages ago as a "Copyright Violation". WTF.

A collaboration with one of my best friends here, was DELETED, even after sending the permission documents required from the HelpDesk. A nice automated reply was sent without explaining why the hell the permission documents wasn't valid for them.

It's like CTRL+C / CTRL+V / CTRL+S / SEND

That's old school yay.

What kind of permission did they need? Where the hell was the copyright issue after all if I gave MY permission to do it?

The picture used both in my work and psycho's was completely free to use, as ALL my stock pictures. Copyright was never an issue on my works, neither on psycho's.

So, for all users on dA: Next time anyone is gonna report a copyright violation on a deviation, open your fucking eyes. I've been reported many times before apparently, without reason, without legal basement.

If envy makes a person report an artist just to get rid of better artwork than the reporter's art, go fÃ»k-off. That's a childish play and an unfair method for all the artists.

Thanks to that mess, a person that became a legend and a true inspiration to many Deskmod artist on the planet is gone.

FACT: The SQL script that updates de pageview number on deviantART is really fast, with MILLISECONDS of difference between timestamps.

Soooo... what does this mean? That the chances of having 2 screenshots with 666.666 are 99.99% impossible, BUT EIGHT? hahaha... damn.

Now that I did that, I just got the idea of recording a new series of Tutorials. But honestly, I have no idea of what to do them about.

Manichonews

My Viewsonic LCD is diying. The backlight is flickering once in a while and the lamps suddenly turns off. I have to keep turning on/off the monitor to get it working again, and it's really frustrating.

I've read a lot about these issues, and seems that is a common problem with big LCDs and the "Inverter" card. The bad news: On this model, the inverter is part of the "motherboard" of the display, and I can't replace it with another $15 one.

The warranty is out, and I can't bitch to Viewsonic's customer service to get a new one... so. I'm screwed.

Anyway, with some works I've been doing, I'll be able to get a new 24" display. I'd appreciate suggestions about brands, models, etc.

I might get two 19s instead. What do you think?

Well... As you might noticed, I've been away from dA for a while, and I understand I missed a lot of things. Specially on my message center. Jeez, about 5000 items to check between deviations, messages and notes. Oh well, I'll catch up soon.

1. Desktopography 2008 is gonna be manichized by 1 entry by me
2. The Week Project 3 won't be wallpaper-based only
3. This time I won't sold the project to 3rd party corporations (blame me for needing money on the past edition of TWP lol)
4. After doing some work for Microsoft and Apple, another BIG company might be interested in my talent. Damn. I'm awesome lol.

1st: OMG POKEMUNS!

UPDATE: Seems like people thought I'm leaving deviantART... Hell no!

As you might noticed already, I left the Artist Relations Team this morning. Lately I'm really busy and I can't keep doing a good work with the Skins & Themes gallery.

I'd like to thank $Moonbeam13 and $FallenRox for being so awesome with me.

Also, a big hug to all my mates in the dA staff, like my master $zilla774, my 1st bitch $spinegrinder, my 2nd bitch ^PurpelBlur, my gansta ^allhopeislost, the awesome ^KevLewis, the sexy ^oilsoaked, the amazing ^opioid, the classic god ^DigitalPhenom, the uber-cool brother ^archanN, the sexy-voice-crazy-ass ^guruubii and OF COURSE, the lmaoful $lolly, among others.

I really congratulate the Artist Relations Department for being a strong teamwork!
