"Why don't you draw for the mainstream?"

I went to the comic book store today and opened up Previews to see what is new in the comic book world and ran across a book that I was supposed to illustrate. It hit a sore spot with me. in order to keep my deadline, I illustrated the cover to the book while my wife and I was in the hospital after having our first child. When I saw someone else's art in Previews on the book (even though I was told that my art would not be used) it hit a nerve. Maybe it's because I just had a son and the need to further my career is more important than ever. Or maybe it's because I looked at my hands and saw wrinkles for the first time. Or maybe it is because I have been striving hard to do what I do only to be still looked over for jobs.

Either way, this answers the question that I got today about "Why I don't draw for the mainstream". It's not because I don't want to. It's just not happening.

Superman Celebration 2009
MAW Productions is headed out to Superman Celebration, June 11th - 14th. We will be there as guests artists along with other members of the “Memphis Mafia”. Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa – Defiance
Optioned for Live Action Motion Picture

MAW Productions is proud to announce that Lizard Brain Productions is
developing a live-action adaptation of Defiance, vol. 1 in the popular
series of independently published graphic novels, Jetta: Tales of the
Toshigawa. Lizard Brain producer Zephyr Blue and filmmaker Bruce Williams
said, “the project is in the very early stages, and the excitement here
is palpable.” Williams promised “a high degree of faithfulness” to
the graphic novel, and adds, “We are thrilled to get Calvin Roberts, from
Ultraviolet and Star Wars fame, to work with us on the project.”
Jetta is the story of one woman with a life-changing destiny. Shianndrea
Toshigawa is the ‘Chosen One’, meant to lead the Toshigawa warriors
against the evil of her father, Terminus, and his organization, the Knave.
Death and destruction rain down over Japan as a war for control rages in
this tale. However, through the anger, terror, and blood…a savior is
born – whether she likes it or not.

Defiance is an 80-page graphic novel, bound with full-color cover and
black-and-white interior.

Martheus Antone Wade

Martheus’ love for martial arts (he is a 2nd degree black belt in
Shotokan Karate and a kickboxing practitioner) along with his talent as a
graphic artist, was a natural fit for creating the characters and
storyline. His artistic style is a unique blend of Japanese manga and
traditional American cartooning. Martheus is currently a freelance graphic
designer and comic book artist. His clientele have included the Heal the
Hood Foundation, the Girl Scouts, the YWCA, the Larry Finch Foundation,
Trust Marketing, and Senior Services. His work can also be seen in Image
Comic’s Bloodstream, Pencilneck Studio’s Bushi Tales #2, Shooting Star
Comics (of which Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - “Defiance” was
published), Approbation Comics, Andrew Dabb’s Slices, Maximum CNG Gaming,
Southwest Tennessee Community College’s Graphic Arts and Technology
department’s comic book Start, just to name a few. He is currently
collaborating on a project with Gene Simmon’s House of Horror writer Sean
Taylor as well as Action Man for Hasbro Toys. Martheus is a 1993 graduate
of Overton High School and a 1998 University of Memphis alumni.

Janet Stone Wade

Janet co-writes Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa. Not only does she help
write the storylines, she also creates characters, renders pin-ups, and
inks the pages of the comic books. Having lived in Okinawa, Japan for the
early part of her childhood helps contribute to some of the research put
into Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa. Janet graduated as valedictorian of
her class at Sheffield High School in 1994 and is an alumnus of Southwest
Tennessee Community College with a degree in graphic design/interactive
media.

Kevin L. Williams

Kevin is founder of Kevin L. Williams Productions and creator of Muley the
Mule and Friends (Muley Comix and Stories and puppets). He has served
since 2000 as President of the Mid-South Cartoonists Association, a
subchapter of the National Cartoonists’ Society’s Southeastern Chapter,
co-chairing events and art shows on behalf of the MSCA as well as other
groups and associations. He has had comics published in international
publications, been seen in print and video around the world, appeared on
radio and national television, and auditioned with the Jim Henson Company,
Sesame Workshop and the Walt Disney Company. Since 1995, he has been
editor of MAW Productions’ Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, and has

It’s birthday time for me, and every year I reflect on what the year has brought me, where I have gone and where I am going. This time last year, I didn’t feel like I was in a good place. It was kind of a turning point for me when I said, “Screw this. Life is to short to not live the way I want to live.” While my position is not perfect, (whose position in life is perfect?) I feel like I am in a better place. There are a lot of good things brewing on the horizons that I can be proud of. One of those things is my family.

My wife is the most important part of my life. Now with our new son so close, I feel more strongly about our little close knit unit. Yes, I do mean our cat, Black Kitty, as well (for those of you who know me personally). I want to take the time to say thanks to them for making my personal and professional life that much better.

I want to take the time to say thanks to my friends as well. My partner in crime, Kevin Willams, my artistic brother at arms, Adam Shaw, and the spiritual gangster, Andrew Chandler, (There are more and you know who you are) all keep me sane in this world of art craziness.

I also want to take the time to thank those of you who have or are watching my artwork and picking up our graphic novel series. I get great enjoyment speaking to each one of you and reading your comments. I hope to meet you guys on the convention super highway at some point and I hope that you continue to take an interest in my future endeavors.

Here’s to another year.

Hi, Gang,

I’m writing this as Editor in Chief of MAW Productions: Big things are underway for Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa and I hope we’re able to release all the good news soon.

In the meantime, the website is undergoing some reconstruction at [link], and part of that will be the addition of new web comics. The stories are already written, but we’d like to have some artists join in the fun!

Each story is around 8 pages long. We will use one artist per story (so far, but that is the plan). The artist who wants to participate should submit samples of their art (copies, not originals as they won‘t be returned) - at the address below, next dinner meeting or low-res files via e-mail - to me (I’ll partner with Antone and Janet later). We are looking for an art style that works well with the Jetta saga of graphic novels. The artist will be notified if he/she has been chosen and will have 2 months’ deadline to complete the pages (this includes submitting the thumbnail layout sketches, roughs, pencils and inks for approval by myself and Antone Wade).

The art will be featured at [link] in the online comics section. For your comic pages you will receive lifetime artists’ credit, of course, and an actual page from a prior Jetta publication! If the works are compiled into a publication, you will receive a copy of the book in which it has been published.
This is a chance to be a part of something that is big and stands to be bigger yet!!

The fine print:
Art submissions remain the property of the artist. Art for these stories should be submitted in original form. All comic art associated with Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa becomes sole property of MAW Productions for use in online and publication print form for or without profit and for advertising purposes. Copies of the art can be used in portfolios but cannot be sold by the artist. There is no set publication date for the comic art submitted, but the artist will usually be notified when the art is published.

1. I have always thought that my name sounded like my mom combined her name (Melina) with my fathers name (Arthur) to get Martheus.

2. I once fell off of the roof of my grandmothers house into some sticker bushes, while trying to retrieve a GI Joe man that I threw up into the air.

3. I didn’t learn my lesson from the previous fact, so I lost my first Snake Eyes GI Joe by throwing him into the air (he was acting as a para-trooper), the wind catching him and swooping him to the top of my apartment building.

4. From previous fact: I returned to the spot where I could see said Snake Eyes action figure everyday for a year hoping he would roll down from the roof.

5. I got run over by a car after I flew over my bike handle bars and skidded to a stop on my chin along the concrete.

6. I was afraid of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

7. I am still afraid of Michael Jackson. He looks like an alien.

8. Jetta was my first female character that I ever drew. Her original name as Ninjay. (That’s so awful)

9. I had a crush on the woman who played in Ninja 3 the Domination.

10. I knew I loved my wife when I first met her in class.

11. Said wife turned me down 2 times before she agreed to go out with me.

12. Prince is my favorite musician.

13. When I was 9, I got on my dirt bike and pretended to be angst ridden Prince from Purple Rain. I sat by a lake for about 3 hours like he did in When Doves Cry until I figured that I look stupid and I was scaring the old people fishing.

14. I ran into a door and knocked myself out when I was 5.

15. I knocked myself out when I was 9 while performing a Nunchck Kata.

16. I knocked myself out while pretending I was Batman and jumping from the top bunk of my bunk-bed to a nearby counter.

17. I once chased a guy down the street because he kept “talking smack” after a basketball game.

18. If I could, I would watch my wife sleep peacefully. That brings me peace.

19. I wish I was taller and my face was a little longer.

20. I want to grow an afro but I can’t stand to look like I’m trying to grow an afro.

21. I want to take my son with me to a Power Ranger convention where we can dress up as Ninja Storm characters and take pictures.

22. I once tried out for Power Rangers. It didn’t go very well.

23. I was asked why I never was a comedian.

24. I once got jumped by a gang after a new years eve party.

25. My wife is the best thing that I have been blessed with.

Not sure what I think yet about the new DA layout.
In some ways, I like the new look. I just hope that this does not turn into a myspace or a facebook. The artist community here needs to stay the same. I don't care about "what I'm doing at a certain moment" or "your friend just threw a snow ball at you. Would you like to throw one back?".

Just my thoughts.

Alright. I’m going to rant a bit here.
I know you guys have seen the illustration of Jetta and Crew over in my gallery. If you haven’t here it is.



This is Cover B (or the flip cover) for the independent magazine and ordering catalog from Enemi Entertainment and Haven Distributors. This cover and magazine is important and I will tell you why.

I was visiting a forum where a comic creator who I respect, was upset at the seeming lack of interest in indy books and the poorer sales that he got after a killer promotional drive for the book. (Trust me, the lack of interest is not because of the book being bad. The book is very well done and the story is nicely written.) It sucks that a book like this may have to go to a web comic format (nothing against it) or stop being published all together. That forum topic prompted me to write this journal and I hope you guys, as comic readers and artists will read this and help make a difference.

As an indy publisher, I have felt the same disappointments as the guys that were venting in the forum above and I think that the problem is found in the distribution system of comics. One of the burning questions that I get is, “Why can’t I get Jetta in my local comic book store?” One web site wrote that Jetta looks like a good book, but they won’t take a look at it until it is in Previews. I have found that most comic book readers don’t really know how their favorite books get placed on the shelves and this is causing a huge problem.

If you have a comic book that you have completed and you want to get it into stores, 9 times out of 10 you have to go through the direct market. The direct market allows comic book stores to buy comics without the publisher having to worry about returns by ordering through catalogs provided by the distributor. For example, Diamond Distribution publishes the PREVIEWS catalog for all comic book stores. The store picks up Previews, makes their choices for the month and orders their comics. Diamond delivers. (There is a better explanation for it but this is the quick down and dirty version.) It also allows for the comic book store to exist in the first place. In the early days of the direct market there were a few comic book distribution companies around that all sold to the same comic book shops. Through the competition of distribution, there was an increase in indy titles. Known by many of us as the “Black and White Explosion”, many indy publishers were able to acquire new readers and publish great books. Even books that were not all black and white but were still independently produced (Shi and Lady Death come to mind because I read the crap out of those), sold as much as DC and Marvel from time to time. Things were good until the comics crash and comic distribution companies dwindled into the one company we have today, Diamond Distributors.

So now all comics have to go through one source in order to get their books on the shelves for readers to see and enjoy. The problem with this is that Diamond has changed their stance on indy books over the years making it harder for publishers to get their books out on the stands. This creates fewer opportunities for new books to find an audience as well as puts a direct strangle hold on the sales of those same books. After all, Diamond is a business. They have ALL of Marvel and DC plus the bigger named indy publishers. It is in their best interest to keep the big dogs happy. That is still a problem for indy publishers.

Now, back to my original point of why this cover

is so important.

Enemi Entertainment has created a catalog of indy publishers that goes to every comic book store in the US. This book rivals Previews in size and features some really good books from indy publishers. This is setting up a direct outlet for Indy Publishers to get back on the shelves and gives the reader more choices. This is also how you can get Jetta on the shelves if you want to see it there. The problem with this is that a lot of stores only buy from Diamond. This means that, as a reader, you have to demand that you want to see these indy books on the shelves. This is the last day of 08 and in reflection, it wasn't too bad of a year. I'm looking forward to next year (as of Feb. I become a dad).

I hope that 09 brings people to speak up here at DA. I think everyone is afraid of me or something. ( maybe it's my profile picture? )lol.

I hope that I can share with you some GREAT news about Jetta that I am working on. I'm sure all of the readers of the book will be as excited as I am. ( Keeps fingers crossed )

My best friend and editor of Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, Kevin Williams, [link] is the master of puppets. His character Muley the Mule has been seen all over the globe and his skills with puppets has put Kevin in front of the fine folks that bring you the Muppets!

Every year, Kevin and Muley bring a special holiday greeting from their house to yours. This year, they had a special guest, SANTA FISH!

Over at our main site at [link] , every once in a while we have placed up free comic book stories on the site that tie in with our graphic novel and comic book series. I have decided to place these stories on my DA site as well. Some of the stories are written and illustrated by me. Some are written and illustrated by another team. All of them fit somewhere in the Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa world. They are all different stories that feature one or more characters from the world that we have created.

Before we get to the end of our story arc for Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa, we will be reprinting Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - Crucible, which highlights one of the first adventures of Jetta©, Turra©, Kim© and the rest of the Toshigawa crew. This book picks up a night before our first graphic novel, Jetta: Last Chances. Here is a little about the story.


JETTA: TALES OF THE TOSHIGAWA - CRUCIBLE
A WEAPON IS FORGED! Prophesy says Shianndrea Toshigawa (aka Jetta) of the Toshigawa clan is the Chosen One, the one who will protect the earth from the impending invasion of the demon army of the Knave. But, before she can save the world, she has to save herself! She has to prove herself to one of Japan’s most deadliest wariors, The killer Taki Sato.
The book will be 36 pages, 6.63" x 10.25", saddle-stitch binding, in full color!

The new release is what we like to call the directors cut. This will put back a lot of the shots that we originally took out with new artwork by yours truly. As well, we will be changing and updating some of the panels to give this important book its rightful place in the sun.
Look for Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa - Crucible to be available June 2009 just in time for Superman Celebration!!

We are witnessing history.

As an African American man, I am proud to see this moment. Not just for the fact of a black man becoming president, but of what this symbolizes. Here normal Americans stand together and, while recognizing the difference in one another, raise their arms in unison for change. No matter who you are or what the color of your skin is, you can make it. Words can not express the joy that I feel at being able to witness this moment in time. I am proud to, not only be and African American, but an American.

Now I can truly believe my own words when I tell my son, “You can do whatever you want to in life. Never let anyone stand in your way.”

If I publish this book, would you guys be interested in picking it up?

If you are a regular on my DA page or my site at [link], you are familiar with my style of illustration. I wanted to pose that question to you in this community.

I also wanted to ask, what do you guys want to see in this book? Keeping in mind that I don't own other companies characters and am limited on what I can show in a personal book, what characters do you guys want to see in there? What content would you like to see? There will not be any xxx in this book, however artistic nudity could be taken into consideration.

I would like to have this done by the christmas holiday so give me a yell and let me know what you think.
