Being home and being able to take over just a FRACTION of what my wife always did is really helped me see how amazing she is. Holy shit fellas, these ladies are nuts. So many balls in the air that'd it make your head spin. I'm finding myself setting alarms for myself for some of the simplest tasks just to keep it all straight.

There's alot of not fun, not creatively satisfying things on deck that need to be finished before I'm gonna reward myself with starting other VERY fun stuff (like taking Scotty's layouts for the "Of Man and Monster" story and start working on finishes). So far the reward system isn't working, because the lettering that I need to get done isn't getting done.



I'm flailing a bit right now, sorry for no posts- I'll try to make up for it and get back on track.

Some of us comic bookers are lucky enough to land day jobs that allow us to work on or at least fiddle with our comic book projects while getting paid to do something else. I have been lucky enough, for the last three years, to have one such job. There were good days and bad, but a whole helluva lot of MAM was conceived and constructed while on the clock.

Sadly I'll soon be joining the ranks of the many unemployed folks out there due to job elimination. They don't even call it "laying off" anymore....essentially it'll be cheaper for them to farm out the work we do, to states that pay less and offshore folks. My last day is Friday the 13th, go fig.


I'm not saying this to start a pity party, I just want folks to take this into consideration in terms of production on my projects and web updates, etc. If I do manage to land something else (which currently isn't looking promising) then who knows if it'll be a job that will allow the level of "free time" that I've been enjoying, that's been integral in getting my comic stuff done. I'm hoping to not end up a shiftless layabout...in which case you'd be seeing a TON of updates, I'm guessing.

Well, onward and upward.

So when I finally resigned myself to the art end of things (outside of inks or letters or colors or tones, etc) I thought it would be awesome because that meant I'd be able to work on that many more things at once beCAUSE writing takes less time. The thing that I didn't consider and the thing that I haven't heard any big time writers talk about is this: Being able to take on multiple projects means you DO take on multiple projects. You add post-production stuff and schedules and all that other jazz and the whole thing turns into a giant juggling act.

Certain projects have precedence for personal reasons, others for scheduling conflicts, others because of deadlines and others because of five hundred other reasons. It's nuts. It's really REALLY fun...but it's nuts.


I want everybody to know if my posting seems a little scatterbrained and random, don't think it's stemming from lack of focus. It's coming from multi-focusing. I also want all the fellas that I'm working with to know that everything that you work on with me means a lot to me. Even if you don't hear from me in a while or it seems like I've forgotten you, I haven't. I've rushed things before and they've come out shitty. I've been burned financially and time-wise in the past, so making sure that I get it right is a big priority for me...even if that means postponing a project for a little bit.

Rest assured, I'm working on it...and if you're worried I'm not? Shoot me an email, I'll give you an update.

I finally got to put a bunch of faces to screen names and handshakes to email addresses. It was a pretty damn cool experience. Scotty and I COMPLETELY sold out of books and we brought a decent bagload of'em with us. People seemed to respond to the book pretty well, which was a great thing to hear. We had one guy who bought one issue Friday and came back on Sat to get the other (thanks camera man guy).

I finally got to meet Ray who was one of my first contacts in my early days here on DA. also stopped by to buy our LAST issue when we were at the Atomic booth.

Our neighbor was pretty fun to bitch and moan with. It wasn't until day two that I realized the reason his art looked familiar was because I actually owned the first issue. You all should pick up his book The Path it's a fun read- Arthurian legend meets Lovecraftian horror. He's a negative fuck but his girlfriend's cool as shit!

On Sunday and I did free sketches for kids under 12 at the AtomicComics/GoldenApple booth. Holy shit-fuck, you've never seen so many Deadpools or CaptainAmericas in your LIFE! It got so bad/busy that in spare moments we would just do extras so we had spares for the next time there was a rush.

Now I also had the pleasure of meeting some of THE coolest motherfuckers on the planet. There must be something in the water down there in the 'Niz. There are some comic booking Arizonians that are just a great bunch of guys.
(and others who's avatar's I couldn't find) We all enjoyed a second floor oasis together- a secret hidden bar with free booze.

It's pretty funny that I had to go to Long Beach to really get to know a bunch of fuckers from Phoenix.


Amidst Tom Jane's drunken PA announcements and the sounds of unprofessional wrestling, there was alot of great art created this last weekend. Hopefully these guys will get to post some of it.

for now I think I'm going to go write some dark fantasy.

Don't let it happen to you.

There's a crapload of fucking insanely talented deviants out there offering commissions right now. I'm sure you know about most of them and have already done the bullshit "I'd love to get something but I don't have any cash right now." Don't do that. Pony up the bread, because these guys will come to their senses soon. They aren't gauging like some of the semi-pros on here and they produce quality work within a reasonable amount of time. We're not talking, take the money and I'll give you an excuse in 3 months about why I haven't done the job yet. These are respectable guys trying to make an honest buck and doing damn fine work for it.


I can't say enough about this fuckin' guy! If I had a man-crush on anybody, it's gonna be on this mother fucker right here, Scott Godlewski. The dude's gonna be huge! He's got pro chops now and he's getting better with every page he draws because he agonizes about the final product in a way that I've never seen. His style is classic without feeling old or out-dated and it still reads great for contemporary stories.

Now that summer has (more than officially) arrived, the Summer issue of Mysterious Adventure Magazine is almost ready. We had planned on packing almost too much awesome into this issue, so we've done a little bit of a reorganization. We've shifted things around and added some stuff that wasn't originally planned as well as pushed some stuff to the next issue.

will be masterfully whipping up another gorgeous cover, this time featuring everyone's favorite cleverly cloaked vigilante. You haven't seen Scotty in his element until you've seen him draw the Major City Skyline on a dark night. We've been assholes and haven't shown ANY of "Night Shift" starring theCLOAK.

Maybe if you beg him, he'll post the first page for you.

Scotty's gotta second story in the Summer issue called "Down To Zero!" It's shrouded in mystery even to those involved. That story is inked by the Maniacal Mikey Babinski I even got to get in there and screw up the line art a little with some clumsy tones.



We've got multiple dudes stirring multiple pots out there right now. It's pretty damn cool, I'm starting to know what those big-time writers and editors feel like- I've been getting totally badass page-art in my inbox pretty regularly for a while now...that's the life.


First off, lemme announce the newest member of the MAM Family, Joshua Covey! He and I are tackling a Canadian lake monster story called "The Brokenheart Of Ogopogo." I don't mean to toot my own horn, but I really liked this story once I was done writing it, but now that Josh has got his hands on it, I fuckin LOVE it! His work is phenomenal ANYWAY, but to see him reinvigorate a story that I was starting to think would never see print? Insanely awesome!

It pains me to only show the first 3 pages...but we've gotta save something for the book, here ya go.

DISCLAIMER: I have not read this new crop of Bat-books, so if you want to dismiss my uneducated and uninformed opinions, I give you the opportunity to disregard this and not waste your time reading it.


That being said...I understand many of the choices made in the latest changes to the Bat-family universe were made for dramatic impact OR to draw out the whole shittery as long possible. I'm throwing this out there again, I DO NOT read all 12 of these books on a regular basis, so I don't know if they've morphed these characters INTO the types of characters that would do these sort of things, but it seems like some of the actions don't stand to reason. It feels to me, like some of the character's actions are soley to move the story in the direction that's wanted, NOT to service the character's true motivation.



Dick Grayson, happy go fuckin lucky boy wonder turned darker solo hero in a different city. To me, I always thought some of the entitlement went to his head. To storm off in a huff and quit being a sidekick because he doesn't want to play second fiddle anymore, seems to be the seed of not wanting to be a team player. There's already multiple issues against THAT theory w/ him staying w/ the Titans and whoever the hell else. The problem that I see (which is a common one) the guys in charge think "No, this will be cooler." Regardless of whether it stands to reason with the characters true motivation. I don't think Dick would take over the Bat-mantle...for a couple reasons: One, if he was so disenfranchised with the whole hero/sidekick arrangement, why would he choose to become a part of one? Two, I don't think Dick has it in him to take over for the identity that (whether he likes it or not) has a God-like status in his eyes. Now I realize the new Batman&Robin dynamic that everybody loves wouldn't work w/o Dick as Bats and that Damian kid as the new Robin. But whether he's known Bruce the longest or not, he was RAISED by Batman, he was trained throughout his entire life by this mythic figure. I think it's more realistic to say he would be one of the people saying that NO ONE can fill those shoes and show a great disapproval towards whoever did take on the cowl.

Tim, even though his "stuck as a 14 year old" status wouldn't physically work for the new Batman, I think he's the ONLY choice for the Batman takeover. He's the only faithful ward to ever come into the Batman/Robin relationship on a more equal footing. Obviously no Robin will ever be EQUAL to Batman, they're called a sidekick for a reason. But Tim was a partner and is the only one that has the makings to produce a quality Dark Knight. I hope that in the worldly travels that they're sending him on, have him return seeming older and more suited for the role than he already is. Tim made the Robin character kick more ass than it ever had before. The skills that he had even before Bruce's training set him on the path to become someone LIKE Batman already. I think that the hurt Bruce feels from losing Dick and Jason (as different as the losses were) would make him have much less of an "old chum" sort of relationship between he and Tim. That would allow for a hardening of Tim that would facilitate the transformation into Bats even more.


I like the simplistic design of Tim's costume and the old school comic booky illiteration of the adjusted name, RedRobin. The direction that they're taking him now has the possiblity of being cool, but i have a feeling that regardlesss of the mysteries he uncovers, the glory of uncovering those mysteries will be left to Dick because he's the one in the BatSuit. It'll be more graphically dramatic to have Batman on his knees holding the recently recovered body (alive or not) of Bruce Wayne. I personally don't think Dick has the chops, if they're true to the characters, Tim would blow the lid off whatever their plans are...whether he'll get to do so, though? Doubtful. I've seen a whole bunch of folks pissed because Tim is not the new Nightwing....WORST IDEA EVER! If there was a better way to completely invalidate Tim's character? I can't think of it. They made the right choice by having Tim make his OWN new version or darker version of Robin. Nightwing is Dick Grayson, and there's nothing wrong with leaving it that way. DC pulling back on the whole "rotating indistinguishable white guy in a mask" thing is not a bad idea. The Flash has the market cornered on his end, let's not let that weakness into the Bat-family.

A bit of bad news, my work has blocked deviantart again. So a big thanks to all the folks that keep picking all the titty pictures for the daily deviations and getting the site locked for me. Don't get me wrong, I love boobs as much as the next guy- hell lookin' at boobs is a great way to spend your day, but i specifically steer clear of that kinda stuff while at work so that they would have no reason to block it.

Sadly our internet traffic at work is monitored, and if while looking at my own messages and your posts, dA still kicks up the "spread eagle fetish" pics that they constantly give out daily deviations for. I used to be able to respond to alot more messages and journals while on breaks and lunch at work. I will not be devoting that much time at home because I've gotta family and other shit going on like all of us do.


This is not a gay "I'm leaving deviant" journal, this is me saying that the ease of access is not there for me any more, so brace yourself for a little less on deviant, or at least diminished frequency.

I'm working on wrangling all the guys that are hard at work on MAM issue 2, so I'll be pretty busy anyway working on the book. Hopefully within the coming week or so, I'll be able to give you all a concrete creator lineup for our next issue. I'm pretty pumped, folks.

We didn't get to spend that much time, but I did get our book into the hands of a few different folks. The guys at DWAP Productions [link] seemed to really dig it.

I finally got to shake Brohawk's hand.

I got to talk to Erik Larsen for a little bit again. There's usually no one around him because people seem to be afraid of him due to his "He's a dick reputation." He's never been anything but daisies and sunshine with me. He seemed to really dig MAM at first glances which was amazingly gratifying.

pick one....they all say roughly the same thing. Different examples are references and different sources cited.

Okay, so i call this a conversation because as an argument, it's incomplete. I'll mostly be throwing you personal knowledge gained from what has happened to me.

I've finally dipped my toes in the self-publication pool and really enjoyed it. I also went it with zero expectations other than putting out a good book and spending money to do so. With Mysterious Adventure Magazine, Scott and I are at what we lovingly call "an all loss position." The cashflow for MAM is a one way street.

Mostly because we're doing what we LOVE, we're doing what we'd LOVE to be doing FOR a living, but for a LIVING, we have dayjobs. So I do argue with the battle cry "Diamond is killing independent comics!" Independent comics can be made, we made an Independent comic. People have read our independent comic. Maybe not thousands of people (or even hundreds) to say something that can be done, is an impossibility, is untrue. Will it probably suck for independents for a while? sure....but when does it NOT? It'll take alot more work and effort and DIY ethic.

Our beloved readers are paying to get these things printed and in their hands. We've done our best to give the most bang for the buck possible. We aren't making money off of our book....but that was also never our aim. We actually got charged for the first batch because we didn't charge enough for our printer to make their end. We felt like badasses though for giving such a kickass introductory price.

Maybe the battle cry can be shifted to "Now it's a helluva lot harder to make a living making independent comics." Blanket statements like that don't always work...but they're a little more realistic.

Here's a little blurb about retailers: I actually QUIT going to my not-so-local shop because I couldn't even get books like Invincible and AtomicRobo. The fact that these books sold really well overall didn't mean anything to my shop owner because he couldn't move the minimum order he was required to get, so he wouldn't. This shit has been in the mail for a WHILE.

We are partially responsible for ALLOWING Diamond to gain a monopoly as they have. This hasn't been a secret. Alotta folks have been talking about their hold on the industry, crying out for free trade and because they had been relatively cool, they were ignored. One of the articles said we were alright with it because Diamond had a benevolent monopoly. But it's like putting a leash on a wild dog and then getting pissed when it acts like a wild dog. Diamond is a business...a big one. We can not like it, but we can't cry fowl when a big bisiness acts like a big business. Maybe saying we are partially responsible is invalid, but pretending this came outta left field or that we never saw this coming is crap.


Personal thoughts: I find it strange that the entertainment markets (that can be considered optional by consumers) have done little-to-nothing to lower their proces in our current financial pinch. In some cases even RAISING prices. While other industries are making cuts in prices in order to get their hands on your business. Do yourself a favor and go shop the fast food joints in your town, check out all the deals. They're just one example of a big business making a business decision that benefits themselves and the consumer. They look at what we were willing to pay for a burger, what we're willing to pay now, and how low they're willing to drop to get it.

It doesn't just stop w/ fast food either. It's a good business decision: JoeBlow had $5 for lunch, so we charged him $5. JoeBlow now has $3 for lunch, he won't buy our $5 lunch, but we want that $3 just the same....we'll give him a $3 lunch.

Comics haven't done that.

Diamond knows they have a strngle hold and are making THEIR money where they can because they know the end result will be hikes for us, but those hikes will ultimately be made by the shop owner.

I wanted to open up a dialogue.

My buddy and I were having a conversation of sorts about the design principles of pulp characters. We were looking at it the issue from the position of creating a new pulp character and the guffaws of cynical fanboys when your design parallels an existing standard pulp look.

Eventhough I'm guilty of it too, I think one of the lamest things you can say about someone's character design is "Hey that looks like the Spirit." Most of the time, if somebody's got a design that shares similarities with a pre-existing design it's for two reasons: unavoidability within the style or homage-like intention.

What I wanted to expand on and have other folks jump in with their two cents, is this: I personally believe that the accessibility pulp heroes in general is partially derived from the fact that they're instantly recognizable. We feel familiar with them because they fit into a nice pre-designed niche in our head.

Obviously of late we've gotta resurgence of interest in the subject matter. Marvel's Noir line, theSpirit movie, and old character fan-art is running rampant.

How do you feel?

Is pulp dead?
Should no one try to recapture the spirit of those old adventurers for a new generation?
Do we not have room for hard drinkin, dame chasin, well dressed, brooding heroes?

I think they nailed down THE best Wolverine i've seen to date in this HULK VS DVD. His look, voice, everything is really well grounded in the spirit of the comics.

I'm hoping they start to develop a more cohesive and quality animated universe like DC did with all their Batman/Superman/JLU.

I really wanna thank all you guys and gals that comment on my stuff. It's pretty cool to hear thoughts and shit, on my own drawing, that I never even thought about.

It's nice to know that when you've got something to say about a post of mine, you say it. I rarely put "advanced critique" on my stuff, but that's mostly out of laziness. As are most of the easy target stuff that I don't fix in a drawing and then post anyway...CALL ME ON IT! If it's legit laziness, I'll admit it, if not? I'll cry and you'll know you're doing your job.

There's alotta folks that I'd consider friends/contemporaries/colleagues etc that don't watch me back or comment on my posts...EVER! That bums me out a little, because generally, I could learn alot from their thoughts and comments and critiques. Eventhough DA can more often than not be a big circle jerk of "good jobs" and random emoticons (i'm just as guilty as anybody for that) but the critique side shouldn't be forgotten.

Hell, i TOTALLY understand not having time (or even feel like bothering to comment)but if nothing else? Gimme a 3/5 or 3 out of 5 sort of rating to at least lemme know KINDA what you think.

This wasn't meant as an attack, and I don't want you guys who DO comment alot to think that you're not doing enough. I just wanna little more feedback as to what I should be doing different or what I should change or what i should try.

On accident of course, but my thing is this; I've (at this point) had to help re-roof about 4 or 5 different assorted houses of friend's and family's. I learned on the FIRST one where to step, where not to step, and why. These guys have been in the biz for decades and I realize shit happens, everybody has accidents, but as I'm cleaning up this clusterfuck of a mess I find a buncha fucking PEANUT shells. Now I'm no architect but last time I checked they didn't build houses w/ fuckin peanuts! My guess is the guy was more concerned with shelling his nuts than watching his footing.

Sheetrock, wood, dirt & shit all over my guitars and amps. fuck. I mean I'm guessing it's not necessarily bad for'em but i know it's not GOOD. So huge ass mess to go with the fact that we're broke from having a new roof put on.

I've gotta couple things colored and i'm trying to keep up on drawing, but i do believe that even though it's just your hand moving, it still comes down to an energy issue. If you don't HAVE the energy, it's tough to draw. I'll dump a buncha crap tonight and we'll see how next week goes.

It was cool, but one day SERIOUSLY just isn't enough. You need the first day just to absorb. Then you go back day-two once the information overload wears off. I didn't check out any panels or anything (no time) I spent most of my time scouring artists alley to little avail.

I FINALLY got to meet this fuckin' guy
did up a Starblast sketch for me
i got one of his great Hulk prints

I was TOTALLY bummed i couldn't find . (I have NO idea where you were, Jerry)
There were quite a few folks that I was looking forward to badgering for drawings..., , and Wegener were amongst a mutlitude of guys I never made it to.

Hopefully it wasn't too torturous for my buddy who went with, but the road trip aspect was awesome...despite the driving part.

Funny how life and procrastination tend to always get in the way. SOOOooOOOoo, I'll only be able to make it to SDCC SUNDAY. I did a couple deviations with unmasked headshots of different characters from EveryMajorCity. A few folks have thrown some guesses into the ring and almost got'em all.

I said that if no one guessed'em all that I'd throw out some better clues for the hard ones. I tried to make it fair by having a couple freebies, a couple that you might need to know a little about my characters, and a couple that were obscure and hard as shit.

So I'll address the ones that nobody's guessed yet (for the folks who have been guessing- hope this helps) Here's some clues:

so in this one, 4,5,8,& 9 are the toughies...and rightfully so. I considered not doing these...but I'm an asshole. Keep in mind that this one I said I was messing with ages too (Sydd being a kid etc)
CLUE: 4&5 are buddies...like Carter & Kord
CLUE: 8 is a badgirl...she really hates 3 guys
CLUE: 9 is (supposed to be) asian...and has claws
