So my daughter Renee and husband Mick are due to fly in tonight ... can't wait.

This is their first visit to our new home. They have been on honeymoon/holiday in Perth, Margaret River, Sydney and now here for the rest of this week :-)

All we need is for the sprinkles/rain to stop. Mind you Renee is going to freeze ... today is a cool 18 degrees C ... she is used to it being in the mid 30s in Cairns at this time of the year.

At least Beechmont is in her best shade of green everywhere for my special visitors.

I know that out the window there are, in the distance, other houses, fields of green, rolling hills, lots of cows, Mt Warning and other rather high bits of ground. But for the last couple of days all I've seen is rain, mist, more rain and low clouds (well we are over 500m above sea level).

Not that there is anything wrong with that. It is very peaceful listening to the rain on the roof ... knowing that it is more than filling our water tanks ... but it does make gardening jobs for Greg (who is on holidays) a bit wet and difficult ... and yesterday I started to paint the garage ... but a heavy downpour after I stopped washing some of that paint away :shrug:

So of course today I must do a feature of some of the beautiful waterfalls I've collected - don't know whose ... just like them ... just because :shrug:



I've got to say that the plus side of joining groups is finding some amazing pieces. And of course the down side is my deviations to check just keeps growing and growing. And to be totally honest the quality of some of these pieces just either isn't great or to my taste ... so lots of deletions. I'm not for one second suggesting I'm brilliant, but surely this is where you should submit your best pieces :?

However, I did find some :jawdrop: pieces when doing lots of :+fav:s and runs this morning and here are a few of them. Congrats to these brilliant artists

So yep I am now on five weeks holidays. One week home by myself, then Greg has three weeks off, then one more week home by myself :-)

Lots of jobs still do after moving house but at least they don't need to be crammed into a 2 day weekend. My aim is to have all the final unpacking/sorting/tidying up/setting up done by the end of this time frame. Greg's aim will be to continue to establish gardens and in particular do something with our barren front yard ie some turf, some gardens, some gravel areas for cars.

This will be our first Christmas without either of the kids being here :-( That will be weird. I miss them so much but am very happy that they are happy and contented in their lives.

Almost had my first traffic jam on the mountain the other morning ... waiting for cows to cross the road on their way to milking :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:


Despite rumours to the contrary Maz is alive and kicking (well actually she is alive and still unpacking from the move but more importantly loving life in the quiet retreat of Beechmont. The most difficult thing about living here is driving off and leaving every morning to go to work - down the mountain, past the dairy cattle, past the baby cattle, past the horses, past the occasional early morning walker or hang glider, trying not to take eyes off the road to glimpse thr all the trees the views of the Hinz Dam and the distant views of the Gold Coast and ocean (especially when going thru the particularly windeeeeeeeeeee section of the road).

More on all of this later.

Just wanted to say HI :wave: glad to be back (I proved I can live without the internet for about 5 weeks ... but it was difficult). I'm working my way thru journals, news, submissions etc ... slowly.

In the meantime just have to quickly share (b4 bedtime) that my daughter's wedding went off beautifully :love: ... luckily Cairns only received the outer-effects of the dust storm that went across much of Australia that week - it was hazy but it wasn't red dusty yucky hazy :phew:

Yep, still in sunny Queensland - it is in the hinterland of the Gold Coast ...
Up a nice little 550 metre high 'mountain' (please remember even Australian's highest mountain is probably like a molehill to those living in Europe :shrug:)

Yep, I'm still :+fav: and running this weekend. For various reasons I haven't been attached to my computer as much this last few weeks ... had a lot of catching up to do ... but what I saw I really enjoyed.

For those of us who have pets, especially dogs ... sitting at the computer for any length of time usually includes the odd paw being scratched on our legs saying 'move away from the computer and come and play with me ... pllllllllleeeeeeease mummy'. So for those of us who have this problem I've put some loving shots of pets into this week's journal. Then I'll go play ball ... I suppose :-(

Sorry about all the :+fav: and running this weekend. For various reasons I haven't been attached to my computer as much this last two weeks ... had a lot of catching up to do ... but what I saw I really enjoyed.

Three sleep-ins this weekend. It is the Queen's Birthday Weekend here (ie the British Monarchy Queen). I'm definitely a republican/anti-monarchist ... but still I find them fascinating (more so in the old days - now they are just like every other family - except richer :lol: - scandles, divorces, over-spending etc etc). I would kill to visit some of the great old castles that you Poms probably just take for granted. Oh well, one day :fingerscrossed:

Just a beautiful time of the year in Queensland - warm sunny days, cool but not cold nights and a late-ish sunrise for those of us who like to sleep in :boogie:

Anzac Day


ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

All Aussies and New Zealanders know what Anzac Day is all about. Most schools have ceremonies to commemorate. The students at my school took part in a moving ceremony this morning. Usually the office girls don't get to attend, but today we shut up shop and joined in. I was doing fine till a group of students did one of the best renditions of Amazing Grace I have heard in a long time ... I lost it and had to watch from a slight distance ... luckily I took my supply of tissues ... I'm such a softie at times under this bitchy exterior :lol:

I can still vividly remember the first time I saw the movie Gallipoli [link]

I was in my early 20s and like most of my generation had heard the story thru our years at school. But this amazing movie brought home the human side of war to me like no other movie I had seen ... and only equalled by Saving Private Ryan [link] ... I used sooooooooo many tissues watching both movies.

I don't believe in war. I don't believe in glorifying it. But I do believe in honouring those who have taken part and been affected ~ either by being there or having friends/family there ~ whether they survived or not.

So I leave you with some images. If you believe in praying, then do so for those of my country and yours who have been involved in any war. Or remember them in any way that suits you.

Just don't FORGET them.

One of the more unusual DDs


I'm planning my new journal ... but just have to ask your opinion. Maybe I'm just an old fart. I know I do have particular tastes in art. I know there are often items in other genres that I think :wtf: ... why did that get a DD.

But checking thru tonight's entries I personally just can't for the life of me understand why the item below received a DD. Sorry ... but ... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This is not a vindictive statement against the artist. It is just my view. Please let me know what you think :plotting:

Saggitarians Are Top for Foot in Mouth

I thought it was just me ... but 2 other saggi's now work with me. And we are all the same.

Sorry for the waffle, but I would appreciate your making your way thru it and commenting back to me. I don't feel I'm totally wrong ... but ...

The Sort of Short Story

So to explain my subject.

At the weekend the VERY talented :iconmattlauder: put out a journal which has raised some controversy that I managed to get myself in the middle of.

Matt's work is :jawdrop: amazing. He has been a dA member for 2 months. I found him very shortly after he started and immediately :+devwatch: him. I would be happy and proud to display his work in my home.


BUT


Matt is also a professional photographer who has his own website and from there he sells his artwork plus tutorials.

If you read this latest journal [link] he mentions his tutorials and details of selling these. The first person to put a negative comment to this journal was :iconvongynz-guethle: So I noted Lee and said I agreed with his point of view and he requested I put my comment out there so I did. Then the shit hit the fan.

Now maybe I'm naive as I said to Matt but to me dA is not about this. "I'm here to enjoy the community spirit that I have found with my friends on dA. I'm here for improvement like lots of others. I have improved and so have they by viewing others works, gaining critical comments and learning from others' tutorials etc."

I'm not trying to suggest that he cannot/should not sell his tutorials. I'm not asking for his deepest darkest photo secrets. I just don't believe dA is the site to channel that thru. Of the people I watch I am only aware of one other person who has sold a tutorial. So many others generously share their talents and knowledge ... such as
