I just dumped my old maxwell house coffee can with metal screen in the bottom. I used it w/odorless mineral spirits to clean my oil paint brushes, but I got sick of the screen tearing up my brushes.
So I considered one of the expensive brush cleaners from the art store, but tried this out instead.
Get a wide mouth glass jar (I have a mason jar) and put coiled soldering metal in the bottom. It gets in between the bristles but doesn't tear them up! Hoorah!! Soldering metal is really soft metal that plumbers and welders use on pipes. It's at Lowe's or Home Depot- You can get it in different thicknesses too depending on the size brushes you use. It worked WAAAAAAAAY better than my previous contraption.
Hope this helps some of you who like to save money and not fall for fancy marketing of art supplies.

I have several choices as to where to set up my studio. Here they are:
1)little house in backyard: good light, good vibes, but smells like mold.
2) huge empty room attached to wood workshop, but no windows at all, only artificial light
3) odd little room upstairs: very small, but temp controlled, built-in bookcases for storage, and has a window.

Wow, I am reveling in having these choices. Having a place to make art makes the screwed-up parts of my life bearable.

Yay studio!

I love this website. So many good ideas that fuel me to paint and draw and glue and cut...
Also, it is almost my birthday- June 8th- (happy bday to the other geminis too!)
Another very good thing is that we have a house under contract and I will finally have a place to paint! My "studio" went back to being a bedroom once Sophie was born. No matter- haven't had time to use it anyway.
Last week I drew more than I have in months and soon I can start a new painting too. Two weeks to move in time!
This has been a long time coming... thank God!
