So, I finally got a Cintiq tablet that I've dreamed of for years. It's not the great big one, just the little 12" one. At first I thought it was going to be too small, as a second monitor it's kind of funny looking compared to my old second monitor. As a monitor it's not that useful but as a sketchpad it's pretty awesome!  I whipped up a little sketch in Photoshop this morning using the Cintiq tablet, nothing to write home about but it was a fun little exercise. So I've recently given notice to my employer of over 6 years and will be going to work for a new employer here in town.

I'm a bit nervous and have those new job jitters and wondering if it was the right thing to do. I sure was comfortable in my old position but that was probably part of the problem.

I'm also very excited to start at this new job, it looks to be a great opportunity to learn new things and to specialize more into what I like to do.

Of course my day job rarely has much to do with my passion for illustration but every once in awhile their paths cross.

The tutorial is still based on the same portrait illustration as before, but I've updated it with a few alternative and newer techniques I use to speed up the process.

I'm always learning on every illustration I do so please forgive me and let me know if there are any inaccuracies or typos, or even better yet... improvements to my work flow!!!

It's a portrait of the beautiful Keira Knightley, done mostly with the gradient mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator CS2. I haven't used the mesh tool extensively for quite some time so this has definitely been a test for me. Also,  I haven't completed a lot of things on it but I thought I would post it in the scraps to get some initial feedback so I might be able to fix some stuff as I continue to work on it.

I know she has no arms, boobs, or a left leg but beyond that feel free to send any thoughts you may have on it.

Finally posted something new, got some Wacom Tablet action going on in this one. Mostly pencil tool and freehand drawing. I know it's not quite the season but it was still fun to do none the less.

Needless to say my demo expired and after seeing some amazing digital painting work here from various artists I decided to give it another try.

So I popped into Photoshop and tried my first full digital pencil sketch using the #2 pencil brush in PS CS. Again, FRUSTRATION! I've used the PS pencil brush before to touch up a scanned in sketch but the changes were very minor.

I vowed to stick to it tonight and played around with the tablet settings. I drew the sketches without reference material so the anatomy may be a bit off.

I doubt that many stock photographers pass through this way but if any of you want to attempt the poses represented in those sketches I would be very grateful as it's always easier to do an illustration with good reference material on hand. I've tried both Safari and Firefox and both ask me to login 90%+ of the time when I visit. If others have this problem as well then the double hits to the home page just to log in have to put some unneeded strain on the servers...

Gradient meshes take sooooo long I've really got to find a way to curb my urges to use it so much. But alas the results can be good, not to say you all will like it but I think it looks just like the person it portrays.
