Things didn't quite work out with my roomies, so I'm moving back home with my Mum for now. I've been talking to a few fellow artists and friends about the touchy subject of "Mary-sues," and I thought I'd give my humble opinion. If you don't agree with me, that's all right, but PLEASE don't send me flames or hate messages n' such...cuz that's just mean, yo. O.o

Me, personally? I'm really tired of the whole "Mary-sue" witch hunt that's been going on. I'll admit, sometimes people make original characters that are a bit ridiculous, with limitless superpowers, perfectly styled sparkly rainbow hair and no flaws who make their intended fall in love instantly and without hesitation. And I'll admit, there ARE a lot of them out there. But some of us actually work quite hard on our OCs, and I happen to be one of them.

I'll admit, a lot of my OCs are self inserts, but I work very, very hard to make them believable and entertaining. I don't make uber-powerful, uber-perfect supermodel characters who make their intended instantly fall for them at first sight. All of my original characters have weaknesses and flaws (without being "emo" or overly tragic) and when I do introduce romance with a Canon character, I write it out very carefully, making sure to keep as true to that Canon's character as possible. If that means it takes almost the entire story for the romance to develop, so be it.

Perhaps my characters and stories may fall under some folks "Mary-sue" category, but I've honestly stopped caring. It's gotten nearly impossible these days to design an original character that isn't automatically labeled "Mary-sue," so I just follow my heart and do the best I can.

There are folks out there who assume that ANY OC is automatically a "Mary-Sue." Some argue that any character that is a self-insert (An original character modeled after yourself) is a "Mary-sue." The truth is, the definition for what "is" and what "isn't" a "Mary-sue" varies from fan to fan, and is often not clearly defined.

Personally, I think the whole thing is just really petty and elitist. I mean, honestly, who cares if our characters are Mary-sue or not? We're not making any money off this wish-fullfillment, guys, it's purely for our own enjoyment and fun. And surely you've got better things to do with your time than hang around waiting to pounce on people who don't meet your standards of fandom. We're ALL fans, guys. As my favorite cliche' quote goes, "Can't we all just get along?" I suppose not...^^;

NOW...that being said, If you're going to make up an OC, I'd advise you to try and avoid some common mistakes. Watch for making your character overly powerful and perfect. Don't spend entire paragraphs describing your character's hair. Give them flaws! Avoid overly tragic backgrounds and personalities, if you can. If you write a romance with a Canon character (and many of us do, it's fun!) stay true to who THEY are. Don't just have them fall for you at first sight (unless they happen to be Takeshi aka Brock from Pokemon) without conflict or hesitation. Really take time to think about what they would really say and do, and how they'd react to your character.

Anyways, I'm doing a series here on Deviantart about it, entitled "Michan's Muppetational Museum Adventures." Cheesy, yes? But hey, the opportunity to sketch the Muppets, props from the Dark Crystal, and Gobo and Cantus Fraggle (Whoopee!) does not come along every day. Or every lifetime, for that matter. Though my meager works do not in any way, shape or form do them any justice, I shall attempt to render them as best as I can. On the back of my Tour Script, mostly (I wish I was joking...).

And no, sadly, I am not allowed to take photos of any kind. Apparently everything is super-duper copyrighted, and they're really strict on everything when it comes to the props, art, and muppets. It's quite scary, actually. O.o

Oh, and if anyone, anyone at all wishes to gift me with Gobo Fraggle art, I'll love ya for ever. I'm officially in love. :heart:

Michan is my "Author Character", commonly known as an "Avatar." She represents me as an artist. Many anime artists in Japan have such characters. The creator of FMA uses a cow with glasses as her character, and the artist for the Slayers manga draws himself chibi with a cape and a giant inking pen. I love cats, have been compared to a hyperactive yellow tabby, and love cat-girl characters, so Michan had to be a yellow tabby catgirl.

Michan's hairstyle, skin tone, eyecolor, and overall appearance are my own, with the exception of the bubblegum-cotton-candy-pink haircolor and cat ears. I've always secretly wanted pink hair, and have a weakness for it as well. Utena from Revolutionary girl Utena, Lacus Clyne from Gundam Seed, and adult Small Lady Serenity from Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon are just a few of my favorite pink-haired anime heriones.

One important note is that Michan is not intended to be the typical anime stick figure girl with huge boobs. Despite a few of my past deviations, she's actually intended to be a full-figured character with a little chub, like myself.

This decision was partially inspired by the cute, sexy, and often positively vector-licious art of :iconcaramel-kitteh: , who is a talented anime/anthro artist with a knack for designing awesome outfits and writing hilarious comics. She is very much NOT afraid to draw cute, attractive anime girls with healthy figures, and I say kudos to her. ^^

Anyways, I'm currently in the mood for art trades, and I'm going to try and ressurect my Teen Titans RP board. It's still PG, but I may allow some Shoujo-ai or Shounen-ai, as long as it's romantic and not sexual. I'm trying to keep the RP with the same overall theme as the TV show, which was made for kids. I think this girl makes a very strong point when it comes to the way people feel about anime characters, as well as times when they want to write stories or do art with their characters interacting with them.

Anime wasn't made so that people could fight and squabble and be mean to each other. Anime was made to be fun, for people to watch and enjoy the characters, to feel sympathy for when a character goes through trials and hard times, to laugh at their antics, to connect in a special way all their own.

Every person's feelings are unique. That's why no one person can claim one character as their own. That's ALSO why every person's feelings for a particular character are just as important as everyone else's.

By the sheer grace of God, I have survived Hurricane Katrina. Many, many people in New Orleans, not more than a few hours from my house, were not so lucky.

I went without power for a few days. No lights, no air conditioning, no tv, no phone. But this was not a crisis. This was an inconvienience. My house was fine. My neighbors had trees in their living rooms. My aunt's coworkers have lost their homes entirely, and are living with relatives in groups of over ten, in houses with no electricity and sometimes no running water.

Getting internet back is a mixed comfort. Every time I read the news, I hear more horror stories. People dying on rooftops of dehydration and hunger, looting of stores, the murders, rapes, and brutalization of innocents in the superdome...CHILDREN HAVE BEEN RAPED, DAMMIT!!

Forget Iraq. This is HELL in our OWN country!!!! We need to get our National Guard out of there and back HERE, where they'll actually do some GOOD!!!!

And Bush, the Fucktard, acting like everythings's hunky dory...I hate him even more than I did before. Damn bastard...cares more about his fucking PET WAR than the people IN HIS COUNTRY who need help NOW!!!

Nevermind God bless America. I'd be happy if He'd just SAVE IT.

I apologize for not being on for the last coupla' days, but I recently bought one of the only video games I'm actually not sucky at...and one I'm horribly addicted to...

Yes friends, I've bought Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.

Now I'm consumed with the daily chores of growing my crops, feeding my dog, riding my horse, wooing my girlfriend, milking my cow, shearing my sheep, taking care of my chickens, and a hundred and one other tasks this game provides for me to engage in for hours upon hours...slowly devouring my soul. I can't get enough of it.

My current stats:
My name: Orenji (named after Michan's male form)
My Fiancee: Celia (Cute little brown haired farmer girl, looks a bit like Tora but acts nothing like her...very sweet and likes eggs and flowers).
Meh Doggy: Shippo-(has pointed ears and is named after lil' Shippo from Inuyasha).
My Cow: Momo (Peach Blossom in Japanese, currently preggers with a baby cow :3)
My Sheep: Al (After Alphonse from FMA...I wanted to name it Dekala, but itsa boy..^^; )
My Chickens:
Edward- Meh Rooster. (If you don't know who I named him after, you don't know ME very well.)
Claris-My first hen (Named after the girl in my new comedy vampire spoof manga "Just Bite Me.")
Freya-My second hen (named after Freya from FF9..that and I love the name Freya)
Keiichi-Meh Horsie (Named after Keiichi, my horse youkai chara on WJ)

Stupidest thing I've done in this game: I kept wondering why my chicken wasn't laying eggs...I waited for days and days....then I introduced a rooster to see if anything would change...and it got angry. Suddenly I realized why I had no progress with eggs.....I bought Claris soon after that and sold one of the roosters..O.o

This game is so fun...I'm thinking about making an RPG board where everyone is a character in a farming village...PG rated of course...I don't want a Grand Theft Harvest or hundreds of Chicken sacrifices or something..O.o...I'll probably allow Shoujo-Shounen ai...but no outright Yuri/Yaoi. I may make a magic room if enough people want little chibified farmer charas to have sex...O.o...yeah..

I betcha Birdie'd be the village Vet, and Katsu'd run the tavern. :3 Oh, and I'd let them have ears/tail of their WJ charas..but no powers other than a "green thumb."

Enough ranting...O.o...must check RP boards...

What Katsu told me has really got me thinking...mabe I should try out voice acting. It's something I've always wanted to do, but I gave up on it a long time ago. I'm so worried. I don't know how to use the software, I don't have a microphone or recording equipment, and when I listened to Katsu's demos, I was blown away. I have NO idea how to blend clips and add background music and all, and I'm not sure my voice will ever have the range katsu does...it sounds so genuine in every role she plays. Still..I want to try. I just don't know HOW I'm gonna do it. T___T

I don't have much confidence in myself...most of my dreams have not come true despite how hard I've worked on them, and I honestly don't see how this one can either. I wish I had someone to show me how to do this. ^^;;

Great..now I feel guilty for being angsty...waaah.

On a positive note, I bought the dress I'm going to wear for the Nekocon Dance. Tis sooo prettiful. *drool* :heart: I need to talk to Birdie about making Tsu's ears and tail. And I gotta find a good wig site for Tsu's red wig.

I'm so freaking happy! ^^ I'm at my brother David's *you WJ peoples know him as Kuri* house right now with my other brother, and we're chilling out, playing video games, reading Megatokyo and watching anime and Pirates of the Carribean to our hearts's content. I'm out of school, away from my mom and little sister, and am absolutely and utterly free. ^^ Life is GOOOOOD. :heart:

I decided not to cosplay Edward Elric this year...too many people are doing him and I wanna try something a little more original. Mabe next year or the year after that when FMA isn't so freaking popluar. ^^;

Birdie had the sweetest idea for the Nekocon dance...Tsu and Tora in formal dresses! AWESOME! I love dressing up...this is gonna rock so hard. :D I LUFF JOO BIRDIE!! :glomp: *tackleglompmolesterbate*

It's come down to the last two weeks of school...and I'm so busy it's driving me nuts. I have two concerts to attend and four to write reviews for by Friday, at least three Finals to study for, A Freshman Orientation event to attend, A paper to write for Orientation, my German workbook's due today and I'm not done, and on top of that, I need to get a summer job, sort out stuff to give to charity in my room(which looks like a hurricane hit it) and plan for Mother's day, and about a million other small chores. And I have a sore throat.

GAWD, I WANT IT TO BE OVER!!!!!!!>< Cuz' then I can RP more in the WJ chat and concentrate on my art. Plus, I need to get a summer job...so I can earn money for cons and stuff.

First and Foremost, :heart: HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!!!!! :heart: I know a lot of people (including myself) are single at this time, so I officially want to send out my love to those of my buds who are lonely or bummed over this holiday. I'll be your valentine if you'll be mine! =D

My mom was awesome this year. She bought me a flavored-lipgloss- flower- mirror- thingie and a fancy sketchpad for V-day, proving once again that I have the best mommy ever. ^^

As far as my preparations for Megacon are going, I'm as busy as ever, and so excited that this week is gonna be murder for me....cuz' I hate waiting...grrr... I finished up my Tsubasa ears and tail, but they look really ghetto. ^^; Next time I'll commission Birdie to make them...she and Bunnie are the ones with the talent in that department. I'm finishing up Rouge's outfit, and found the prettiest pair of drop earrings for her.

I hope that they'll let me bring my bokken and Tsu's tail on the plane(it has a wire in it). Damn this paranoid government of ours....what am I gonna do, Hijack the plane with a coat hanger covered with fuzz?

Oh, and I want everyone to know, I gave up meeting Scott McNeil again to see you all!!! Numa Rei-no Con was in New Orleans last Saturday, and it was completely free...but I needed to earn money for Megacon...so my friend Lauren went and got to see him instead. Baaaah.....You all better appreciate how much I love you guys! (Which is a heck of alot), =D

Oh, and CYBORG GOT SOME LOVIN'!!!! X3 Saturday's episode rocked. Seriously. So cute...:heart:
