I can't believe it, I am so happy! Since graduating from college last July, I have been doing some webdesign and graphic design freelance work while learning learning and learning like crazy about HTML, CSS, web standards, a bit of PHP, and search engine optimisation. Just after I had graduated, I was going to go for some magazine design jobs and things along those lines, but my heart was really set on doing website design, so I thought I would learn as much as I could and build up a decent portfolio, so that's what I have been doing these past months. Besides, magazine design pays a lot less... hehe.

So anyway, I was offered the job straight away! I start on Monday the 4th of June. I have been jumping up and down since yesterday :XD:

If anyone is interested, here are some photographs of some of my portfolio pages. I put a nice mix of web design, graphic design and illustration in there:



I have also been creating some vector illustrations for iStockPhoto.com. You can check out my contributions which can be purchased as fully editable vector files here.

Remember I was asking about US coins? Yes, I made those for iStock. Thankyou to everyone who helped me out with that, I appreciate it a lot! I just hope I got the coins the right sizes and such... they're here if you want to take a peek. I made two dollar coins in the end, a 'Sacajawea' coin and a silver dollar. I made some British coins too, they're here.

I also made an alternate dA account, to put my vector/commercial illustrations, and perhaps some graphic design stuff later on.

So, I haven't been sitting on my lazy arse, I've been doing stuff! Hehe :D

Hey peoples!

Have you noticed my new wonderful journal? I'm quite excited about it. In fact, I bought a subscription yesterday *just* so I could design the journal. Is that a bit silly? Plus, I can see the large thumbnails in my devwatch, so it just might kick my arse into commenting on people's works, because I've been a bit lazy with that recently. Naughty me :giggle:.

I'm completely free right now, so I am available for commissions and freelance work for anything - digital illustrations, pencil drawings, website design and graphic design. Take a look at my website for examples of my work, my CV and contact details. Or, just contact me from here, I don't mind. I will charge about £8/hr for web work (roughly $15, as I have just finished college and feel I'm not professional enough to be greedy yet heheh), and drawings etc. would be priced on size/complexity.

I just graduated about three weeks ago, by the way! I came home for the weekend because it is my friend Hayley's birthday. I got home yesterday evening around 10pm, watched Big Brother, and had a really good nights sleep. Then this morning I had to get up early to catch a hair appointment, finally got my hair cut after more than a year(!), and got rid of all those nasty split ends and such. Hayley had a BBQ in the afternoon, and then we went directly to the pub and then onto one of East Grinstead's completely amazing (not!) clubs. I got home about 30 mins ago and immediately cooked some potato waffles and ate them with hot relish - yummy!!! I'm still hungry though so may search out something else to eat... or maybe I'll go to bed as it is just past 2am... hmmmm.

I have to go back to Bournemouth tomorrow though as I have to collect my results from my course on Monday around midday... which will determine if I can actually graduate! Eeeks! Graduation is next Friday also, scary! I'm pretty sure which grade I got, so I'm not too worried. It'll be fine. I've also got to move out next week, that should be interesting!

I have nearly finished my course at college - I can't believe it, time has whizzed by at an unbelievable pace. I have got my FMP unit and my professional studies unit out of the way now, I just have to make my personal website and put it on the web. I've done my portfolio, I just might want to finally tweak it before I print it out properly. I aso have to buy a portfolio box, which will put me back around £50 - £50 I don't have! There is just one more unit to go, called 'Exhibition and Evaluation' - I have to write a 2,000-2,500 word report, and help set up our graphic design exhibition in our studio. I'm on the web team, so I'll be assisting in creating the website for that, also.

Erm... what else? Ah yes, last deadline is 16th June, then I've got to stick around for the exhibition at the beginning of July, and the assessors are coming around that time also, which will be extremely boring. Then graduation - that's on the 14th July. I had to pay for graduation the other day - the tickets, robes, etc - it set my parents back £120 (as they're paying for it, thank goodness!) - I felt so guilty telling them how much it would cost. Arg. I also get kicked out of my student house on graduation day even though the contract is meant to be up to the 15th. So, I'll probably have to transfer a lot of my stuff to my boyfriend's house (who luckily lives very close), prior to that. So, busy busy at the moment!

Then I've got to get a job!

As for drawing... I really want to get back into it. I have quite a few unfinished drawings from last summer I really want to finish, and I started a new drawing a few months ago which I really want to do but have been too busy will college stuff. So I think I will just have to make the time because i don't really want it to take a back seat.

1. I CANNOT stand the sight of blood. Especially my own. When I was 16, in my science lesson at school we had to watch a video about blood transfusions. I was kind of fine watching the video, but when it ended, and it was playing on my mind, I started to feel really faint. I had buzzing ears and couldn't see properly, so my friend took me outside for some fresh air, and I managed to fall over about 3 times on the way out X_x

2. I have a toy weasel and a plastic army man in my shoulder bag I take everywhere. The army man likes going to the pub, and if someone has cider, he always manages to jump in it... I also have a whoopee cushion (just in case an appropriate situation arises!) and a toy grasshopper, which is squished into one of the front pockets. I'm such a kid :)

3. I had a dream last night about a really fast centipede that was chasing me. Scary.

4. My hands and feet are always cold.

5. I can't stand babies. Being around them makes me angry.

6. I have a birth mark on my left knee exactly the colour, size and shape of a penny :D

I'm feeling rather happy, actually! I got my coursework stresses cleared up for now, and feel quite confident about what I am doing, which is fantastic, it makes such a change from stressing about my work, which just turns me into a nervous wreck! The bad news is, I have a crit tomorrow morning at 11:00, but after that I'm just gonna relax and take it easy for the rest of the day, and I'm going home to see my family and my kitty cat at the weekend! My lovely boyfriend is going to drive me home for a couple of days, it will be great to get a change of scene :D

Aaaah, look, a happy Michelle! Don't worry, I'm sure I'll be stressing again soon! Haha...

p.s. Oh! I saw Juliana Hatfield play last Wednesday in London, she was just FANTASTIC, and I have been listening to her music nonstop since. If you don't know about her, she was popular in the early 90's. I wouldn't have known about her if Justyn hadn't been a huge fan (he's about 12 years older than me, so figures) and given me some of her music to listen to. I thought her music was good, but didn't really get it until I went to see her live. There was such a huge buzz and such a good vibe from the crowd, as the diehard Juliana fans there hadn't seen her play live in the UK since about 1993... that's a LONG time! Wow wow wow. Just feeling so good right now.

Oh my goodness, I've had like a permanent stress headache ever since last week and this is not good. It's my last year at college, and frankly it's scary. I have a 'Final Major Project' to do (just how scary does that sound?!), and I've got to put together a stunning portfolio for interviews, create my own branding, remake an entire website, and loads of other stuff, noooo. Graphic design is meant to be enjoyable, surely, and this is all just making me feel miserable. I have seriously thought about just packing it in and getting just any old job, but I mustn't do that! That would be very naughty of me. I just had a tutorial with my tutor, and frankly my tutor thought my ideas for self branding were cr*p, sooooo, back to the drawing board *curses, swears, etc*. Well, I don't care what anyone says, I'm going to the pub tonight!

It's really cold here! Bournemouth is on the coast, so it is much warmer down there, but it's bloody freezing here in Sussex! Brrrr. I was shivering in my bed last night and saw frost this morning. My kitty cat is at this very moment sitting on the warm spot in the kitchen, where the pipes go under the floor. She is smart.

Hello!

I haven't done any drawings for a while... that would be because I'm up to my eyeballs in college work *grumble, moan, etc* Really SHOULD be doing work now actually...

Oooh this would be a good opportunity to ask if anybody has any nice insightful ideas for me as my mind is a big jumble of confused-ness right now and can't really think of anything decent.

I'm doing a graphic design brief where I have to make a new brand of whisky, J&B -6ºC, appeal to men of ages 25-35. It is a new whisky which isn't as harsh on the tastebuds as most other whiskies and is much lighter in colour. There is a picture and info here. It reminds me more of vodka than whisky.

Anyway, this whisky has to appeal to the younger generation. (In the UK, anyway) Whisky is currently very traditionally advertised and Scottishness is the appeal on quite a few of them, with tartan and all that rubbish. Basically, it's aimed at old men. We want to get away from that and present this new whisky as being associated with partying and having fun and as being very versatile - you can make lots of different cocktails out of it by adding mixers.

The strapline is "See through convention"

Been trying to come up with some concept. Here's some things I have thought of:

1. The whole rebirth thing - emerging as a beautiful butterfly etc. Cast aside the old perceptions of whisky and emerge as something shiny and new.
Man can relate this to getting his act together - becoming cool, casting aside his old self.

2. Versatility - an example my tutor gave me was a puzzle piece which could fit into any puzzle.
I thought of a man who would go out with any woman - relate the man to the whisky and the women to the mixers ( I thought it was cheap and nasty, men of 25-35 years of age would want to be more sophisticated?), or the whisky could be so attractive that all the mixers want it... Magnets?

3. Based on the "seeing through convention" strapline - seeing something extraordinary within something ordinary.
Some crappy initial idea I had was some big fat man in a kilt, then kilt is parted to show young woman's legs underneath.

Not really sure what to actually create either. I said to my tutor yesterday that I would probably make something to go in a pub or bar that would let existing drinkers know that there was a new drink. Was thinking of table ads, cocktail menus, some kind of drinking game given away when you buy the whisky, but my tutor frowned on that and said I should think of something a bit more crazy. But what?? I am a bit stuck! Could make posters, but that's not exactly crazy... hmm!

Any ideas will be more than welcome!

Well I have a commission to do, so that will come first, then I have a drawing which I started several weeks ago which is nearly finished but needs quite a bit of work still, a drawing I started the other day, and another drawing I started the linework for ages ago but other things pushed their way in front of it, and now it is at the bottom of the pile. No subjects for the drawings will be given away - it's all a secret ;P

I'd better get moving, not long to go before I start college again - my last year before I have to get a proper job! Noooooooo.

I just woke up, had some mixed up dreams which included my art teacher from my secondary school for some reason, and a huge fireball erupting through Brighton and nearly reaching me before I woke up in a cold sweat. I hope it's not a sign.

Oh yeah, and talking about art and art teachers, I found out recently that the college where I did my 1 year art foundation course before going to college has just closed down. That's quite sad as I have some good memories from that year, and the building had been an art school for 100 years. I might have to put up some of my work from that year in my scraps, including life drawings, just for the memories.

I'm just generally a lot happier at the mo, I had quite a bad 'down' phase about last June/July, I wasn't in a good way and just felt crap about myself. I am great now though, and have even been fitter by exercising, etc, healthier, and lost a bit of weight in the process (not that I was fat to start with), loads of people commented on it at college, its good to see that some efforts don't go unnoticed :)

Well I am back from college for a little bit and thought that I'd announce that I'm going to start drawing again, in fact I have already started one, the subject is a secret for now though, you'll have to just wait and see. It should be up within the next couple of days.

Expect to see quite a bit from me in the weeks that follow... watch this space :D
