Then I see my stats.
* 14 Deviations
* 113 Deviation Comments
* 43 Deviant Comments
I could use a little more contributing, maybe I should release them under the Creative Commons? Maybe I should do higher quality art. I scrap stuff too much, and speak up way too much. 320 pageviews...

Hold on, 320 pageviews? I mean... cool! Alright, enough talk, more deviations. Let's map the caps lock key to backspace and start inkscape!

mmm, if I describe myself as being a "programmer", maybe I should do art drawn by programs using mathematics?

My whale is back. It has been two or three days since it has been so, but only today did I have time to refit my computer to a working state.

Somehow, they managed to lose my windows recovery CD. With the assistance of linux, I managed to make my own recovery "system".

****GEEKS****
dd if=/dev/hda1 | gzip > hdd #do a backup
dd if=hdd | gzip -d - > /dev/hda1 #do a recovery

The image is 2.0gb instead of the 4.7gb a DVD takes, and it takes 15 minutes and not 30 to recover windows, **not counting the initial setup on that last figure** (with the certainty it won't damage linux!!). For best result, zero your harddrive first. (I zero my harddrive before shipping it to repair). Linux sysadmins would think this is a stupid but efficient way of doing backups, nongeeks think it's an incantation.
****END OF GEEK****

Anyways, I'm putting back all the data back in there, making DVDs and MP3s play, installing my favorite apps (inkscape tomorrow), madwifi (driver) and firefox...

Populating the hard drive, quoi...

Speaking of "quoi", french tends to surface up these days, given I'm getting tired and cynical about anything and everything.

Still sad, because I only write when I'm sad. If I was at peace with the outside world in real life, I wouldn't need to come here to complain -- where I'm more than often heard. Still listening to sky.fm. My mp3 library is getting repetitive... "Numa Numa" doesn't amuse me anymore after listening to it for 50 times.

--

One night, I thought to myself, "What is my reason to be?"

Not the meaning of life, the universe, and everything. That's too easy, the answer is 42.
I did say, "my reason".

I found a new way to make my thoughts still.

I don't have any material capable of vectoring. My mind is just not in raster graphics. This whale of mine is still not back from repairs.

I'm contemplating buying a new computer. However, it would be premature as I don't need anything higher in technology than my whale, and with the "new today obsolete tomorrow" nature of computers, I'd be throwing money out the window.

Speaking of money. The area where I live might be hit by a natural disaster soon. My home will be fine, but I will be off the grid. What's a computer without electricity? This sort of activity won't matter if I resort to the emergency kit for the two weeks that it will last. It'll be a waste of money, and most unwise.

I have a deviation pending submition, raster/vector.
raster: pixel based. vector: geometry based.
The world through my eyes is raster. plains of light is vector.

The raster portion really is a failed attempt. The problem is I can't draw shapes, only vague outlines after several attempts. The object I wanted to draw in raster is too complex for my level (grr). I changed the design, path, and target so I could use vector graphics to complete the deviation and still produce the same "feeling" as my original idea.

Here is the title of deviations that I want to post someday:
plains of light (close up)
plains of light 2
radome
split horizon
night

Random thoughts going by me:
Don't give up on your dreams

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." Benjamin Franklin
(Are you free?)

It is better to die free than to live miserable and a slave.
(In death there is peace)

"I rather be misunderstood, miserable, and alone, than misunderstood, miserable -- with obligations"

I'm back from vacation. I had a lot of fun, but at the end of it, I was ready to come back home.

The trip was really nice. Even with no computer, I found plenty to do.
On the way there, I almost got sick because of the turbulance. I'm not generally the type to get sick while travelling. We arrived 10 minutes early, but got out 10 minutes late because the bridge that connects the terminal to the plane was broken, and we had to call a mechanic to the scene.
I visited local points of interests, visited the local places, without much planning. Just the way I wanted it.
I also saw a show, a humourist. The guy was very funny, made me laugh all the way.
My grandparents (my hosts) held a party and invited a bunch of relatives. It was really nice to see my old pal, new ones as well. I had to ask everyone to present themselves again, because it had been almost 5 years I haven't seen any of them.
The next day, good and well respected friends of mine brought me to see even older contacts of mine. Contacts that I saw 10 years ago. I also met a -very- respected friend -- both by myself and my mother -- that gave me wise counsel. That day, I had dinner a group of friends. It was most pleasent.
My holidays ended with little relaxing activities with my hosts.
I came out of the plane on my way back 20 minutes late, 10 minutes for the wind, and 10 for the paramedics to attend to one passenger.

I was greeted by my mother at the airport. I spoke about my trip while my baggages tooks their time to hit the belt.
My sister did miss me, contrary to her initial thoughts, not to my surprise.
My father went to great lengths and pain to greet me, as he faces pain with each movements he made.
Myself, I brough with me music, comics, and food for everyone to enjoy.

---

My computer has yet to come back from it's repairs. I am currently typing on a PIII 600mhz 128mb memory computer running an older version of DamnSmallLinux.
The fonts are terrible.

---

Nothing prevents me from doing art, it might be challenging, but feasable. You will be hearing from me

That been said, I'm back!

The insanity of test has come to a conclusion. My thoughts are going about my head like a super bouncy ball in a small room still. I'm having a really hard time typing, where normally I type a good 250 cpm (roughtly, 60wpm). My mind is playing a lot of tricks on itself. What was that? Oh, it's just that ribbon hanging from one tree to another in front of the sign saying "keep off lawn" flashing back it's rays from the sun to me. Is someone pounding on my wall, trying to get my attention? Ah no, it's part of the song (High - James Blunt), never heard that one before.

I'm going seriously offline from Monday to ten days from then. I've been inactive because of exams, but watching the userpages of some users I care about.

Which makes me think, I should start creating art before I go in recovery.

By the way; I'm not high, I'm not smoking anything, I'm not remotely drunk (from my typing, I would be, this message took three times the time to type it), I'm on caffeine -- but that should improve my typing somewhat -- I'm completely exhausted.

Ever wondered why Ozzy Osbourne gets bad publicity? Tell me.
Compare Crazy Train with Take a Walk on the Wild Side. Fair enough.
Compare their lyrics now. Fair enough?
Crazy Train has less "naughty" concepts and ideas that Take a Walk on the Wild Side.

See you all in a long series of days. Until then, don't let society destroy the creativity you hold.

Well, you won't be seeing me for a bit of time.

Tests are coming up, in large amounts, essays and assignments are coming my way too, and a case study. I have a ton of programming projects to attend to.

That is, I'm going to be busy until my semester ends, where I'll be heading to a little vacation.

Speaking of vacation, I'll be gone during the two weeks of vacation I'm going to have, and I'm not bringing my whale. ~arr-matey and I have the same computer model (It's a toshiba P30, I've made a mistake in my post to the deviation). Indeed, my whale is heading for computer repair during this time. When I return from my flight, it'll be fixed and working, hopefully.

I'm refitting my computer material, and I'll handle all this when I come back. That is, no computer during the time that I'm gone. That's right, I'll be suffering from withdrawal perhaps, but I'll be enjoying myself a real vacation.

For you, that means that you won't hear from me on your "deviantWATCH" for the next month or so.

Enjoy those deviations I posted recently, they will be the last in a great length of time.

Letter to ~risu
If I make anything, I'll do it with a certain expectation of how it's going to come out. Art is picky, I've got a big picture, a small pencil, but after an insane amount of erasing, I've got nothing pleasable to me.

I can make computer generated graphics, that's not a problem. If code and technical knowledge is required, I can do it... but if everything is done on the computer, and the computer is doing the job, the computer succeeded in doing it's job, not me. It looks good, but it's not "me".

I'm surprised, and honestly flattered that you come to my userpage everyday. Surprised because I don't post everyday, and it's barely if I make an updated weekly.

However, as I'm reading your comment, I'm affraid that I might not be the promised source of inspiration that you think that I am, fear that I may not live up to your expectations.

I can try doodling, but...

the fear of failure will keep me from succeeding.

Hello everyone!

It's Sunday again, and you know what that means, it means mimithebrain will update his journal! I'm going to be talking about pear, favorites, and misc digital processing blablabla...

Pear
It's been some time since I liked an artistic result like this one coming from me. I saw this pear in my fridge, beaten up, looking at me with this pathetic look as to move me to pity for it, almost to tears. So I took it in my hands, and thought that if I felt pity for it and had feelings of remorse for not eating the pear earlier as to not have it suffer.... then it must have some artistic value. More on the pear below, in digital processing.

Favorites
My favorites is a place were I put all the pictures that I personally liked, because either it had emotional value to me, or because it was well drawn from an artist that nobody knows about. That's why I won't just go nuts and favorite 10 in a day from those artists that always end up in the first search results. Search for "naga" and see what I mean.

So this week, there is three favorites.
Non au sida by *gueuzav . The text in the deviation literally means "Protect yourself", "No to AIDS". The rest of the picture is an exercise of observation.
Comic - Be My Penguin and .::A Cup Of Tea::. by *Rimfrost . Rimfrost has a talent at making comics which warms your heart. I really like the expression on the faces of the characters in "be my penguin", the message behind it makes me cry. "A cup of tea" is making me cry right now... So beautiful message behind it

digital processing
I spend more time on the computer than I spend drawing. So I spend more time playing with my "tools of the trade" than I spend time with my pencil and eraser (mostly the eraser!).

The pear was fairly easy. Take a picture (it'll last longer), upload it to the computer (plug it in!), fire up The GIMP, *crop crop*, apply the oil filter, upload the devart, there you go. The pear that I never painted and instead-went-cheap-and-took-a-photograph-of-it-and-then-just-olified-it... You know me, can't complain...

Ah, yes, the entire purpose of this section is to write about how I scan artwork to digitize it on the computer

Here's the deal. A local artist makes excellent artwork. She sketches everything on paper, and color things out on the computer. What I do is take the artwork, and process it so it can be worked on.

There is the outline on how I do it, I'll post a more complete howto if there is interest in it:..

Do the sketching
Put it on a good scanner, doesn't need to be expensive.
Scan it at 300 dpi
Save as a PNG. (You lose quality with JPG, and introduce artifacts)
In the GIMP (or photoshop), convert to grayscale
Here is the magic and tricky part...
Adjust the color curve so that black is blacker and white is whiter. When you do that, there should be only two colors left, black and white, no gray. The midpoint should be where there is a "dip" in color generally. Don't just convert the entire image to black and white using the available menu option, it won't work as well then if you do it yourself and pick the midpoint yourself.
Use the select by color tool. There is two ways to the next step:

1. Click on the white of the picture, and select the inverse of the selection (it's in the menus).

2. Click on the black of the picture.

Copy this selection, open a new document, but with transparency as a background, not white, and as a grayscale document.

Paste the selection, save as a PNG. Again, you don't want to lose quality, and in this stage, it permits you to use layers when working on the image.

Layers are a pretty powerful thing! I don't know much about it because I'm "just the IT guy". I had to fight with the artist for weeks to get her to use layers, but it paid off... (You know who you are )

If you can do with the text above, cool, if you can't, remind me to do a deviation showing how to graphically do it. The best part about this method is that it only costs you a $50 scanner. "The GIMP" is free. It didn't learn how to do this...

The 1st player of this "game" starts with the topic "6 weird habits/things/hates about yourself" and people who get tagged MUST write a journal about their 6 weird habits/things/hates as well as state this rule clearly. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you are tagged" in their devpage comments and tell them to read yours.

In this journal, I'll speak of two-three things. 1. My first impression of dA. 2. People I've met here. 3. Deviations I favorite... And finally, at the bottom, the reason I joined deviantArt.

My first impression of dA.
It's a nice place, it really is. The people are really nice, and the moderators are pretty nice too. Most deviants are nice. I have seem a little hostilities from some excited deviants, but nothing that is too disturbing, there are idiots everywhere afterall, dA is not immune. The website is slow at times, but you can't beat the fact it's free so far! I haven't had problems with the management, I even managed to pass jokes without getting hurt, kicked, or banned. Deviantions such as KA2500xP might sound offensive to some Message Network Operators, but in fact, I had the reaction I was hoping for, a smile.

People I've met here.
(~akairisu,~chyeahxlovee,~Dosu2,~starfox64,*xxSkaterChickxx)
akairisu was (still is) a nice user when I first met her, so I checked her galley and found this deviation (Baby Dragon biting my thumb ). I commented on the fact I thought it was really nice. Little did I know she'd make another dragon (If I can't burn them... ) very soon afterwards.

Dosu2 told me he'd help me with my drawing skills. Let's see if I can hold my side of the bargain and actually draw.

starfox64 is a user whom I bump into on a regular basis.

chyeahxlove and xxSkaterChickxx deserved themselves a nice devWatch...

Deviations I favorite:
(Anemones) by ~PhanthomKitten is a non-photoshoped real life photograph of anemones in a small pond.
(The Toaster ATTACK ::.... ) by *LilChu . Very nicely done. Made me laugh for hours.
(.:Sadness Is Overwhelming:. ) by =Jackspicerrules13 . The proof that simple drawings can be good drawings. Encouragement to me.
(Polaris) & (Biter) by *snapesnogger . I had first fav-ed Polaris then Biter. Polaris is a very nicely done deviation, and Biter as well.
(A Magical Mirror) by *akelataka . Akelataka is an artist whom I've been looking at her art for longer than I've been on deviantart and longer than I've used Linux. This deviation of the two pichus is one deviation that I like very much.
(If I can't burn them...) ~akairisu . After making another dragon (I really really really like dragons and another other creature of the similar form and type) a fav was in order.

Most importantly:
The reason I joined deviantart.
I'm a very pessimistic and negative guy. When I draw, I'm often unimpressed by what I did, annoyed or disgusted at times.
This made me almost scared and afraid to draw as I hate to see myself fail so often.
I've been looking for reasons to draw and ways to encourage myself into being more optimistic and positive... and I need to find something else to do than computers all the time. What was my pass time now became my job. I need another pass time.
I had created a game called the drawing challenge in one private network I know of. The game was good, but the workload that each user had in real life made the game difficult, and ultimately failed. I haven't been back on the private network in a very long time.

I joined deviantart in order to encourage myself into drawing, and see myself succeed were I failed. Also, I wanted to encourage other artists to become better, like lilchu who didn't think too highly of his comic ("CHuUuuu i suck at comics and stuff oh well").

What you want others to do to you, you yourself must do.

After two deviations, I feel better than I thought I would. Public humiliation isn't so bad...

These three ways to get around DeviantArt:

Draw.
If you have a talent at drawing, do that! That's the main purpose of this place. So far, I haven't posted a single deviation from my own hands, they've all been created by some sort of machine (Dragon mod: Inkscape and "The World Through My Eyes", well, a camera.)

I can stand some public humiliation, but I'm not crazy

Writing:
Seems like there is deviants who like to write, I wonder how well that goes? Do people really like to read scripts of pieces of dreams, stories "a dormir debout"? (To sleep standing, said of something that sounds unreal, like sleeping standing )

Uh, yeah. The idea of me learning drawing is to actually put all what my mind spits out on paper, because it's driving me nuts to keep it inside and daydreaming on it until it fades.

Ranting:
I read BarFurDay's multiple rants on his Journal, and he's not the first to rant about this website. Personally, I think it's great... it's free afterall, and I'm not paying any subscriptions. I mean, I would if I'd find that there would be a significant advantage to me, but right now, not so much.

As far as an Army of stupid deviants go, errr... I'm not involved in DA politics, so I'm not affected by that.

but wait wait wait waitwait a second...

This is not a contest of popularity, "who sucks the most" or "who rox0rs the most". It's a community, granted, but it's about the art, right? Then again, what's the motivation behind sharing art?

The others (LilChu, PhanthomKitten), they are pretty good. The world gets their art, and they are given popularity and fame.

Me, I suck, the world gets nothing, I get nothing.

'Nuff said.

If you'd like to know what's to complain about, check out BadFurDay's complaint in his journal [link]

Hello,

My name is mimithebrain, and I'll be commenting on your art today.

I see some very good art on deviantart, and I thought that I'd be nice if I'd comment on it.

I'm artistically challenged, but I hope that eventually, I could post some of my pathetic art for everyone to laugh at.
