I just realized that our dear Saint Nicholas is the prototype for Santa Claus... Santa Claus as New Year/Christmas symbol is something new for us, russian tradition knows Ded Moroz (grandpa Frost)and his granddaughter Snegurochka (Snowmaiden) as fairy personages of New Year celebrating. But they have nothing to do with Christian saints. On other hand Saint Nicholas is the most venerated saint in Russia...but he is not the main person in Russian Christmas...

Saint Nicholas of Myra, Wonder-worker, was the archbishop of Myra in southern Asia Minor in the fourth century. In addition to being honored as the patron saint of many countries, notably Greece and Russia, and of cities, he is the patron of many occupational groups, most notably of sea-farers. Nicholas was noted for his defense of Orthodoxy against the Arians.
St. Methodius, Patriarch of Constantinople, in the middle of the ninth century produced a life of Nicholas. After Methodius' life of Nicholas became available, Nicholas was acclaimed and honored throughout Europe and especially in Italy. When Myra was captured by the Saracens in 1034, many Italian cities planned to "rescue" his relics. In 1087, forces from Bari, Italy, attacked Myra and carried away his relics from Myra to Bari where they were enshrined in a new church. His fame increased.
In time his fame in northern Europe as a saintly bishop began changing to that of a giver of gifts to children, usually done on December 6, the date of his commemoration by the church. (Life of Nicholas says he became known for his generous gifts to those in need). As immigrants from the Germanic and Nordic lands settled in the United States the image of St. Nicholas, or "Sinterklaas," as he is known among the Dutch, slowly changed to that of "Santa Claus" with little tie to the spirituality of Christianity.

I am very grateful for this wonderful gift!

I do not know yet if i would change much the way my journal looks like...to say the truth I am not a great fan of much css and the stuff...but one of *subscribers* advantages makes me happy: now I can feature beautiful pictures, placing thumbnails in my journal!

So...I begin! For my first journal entry with features I've chosen just 8 artists...though there are a lot of others whom I would love to present here! But, after all, it's only beginning, yes?

We have new tool on DA. Now we can organize the pictures we've "faved". We can put them in collections - the same way as we organize our gallery, creating folders inside it.

Conny (~BeautifulDesaster) and me just noticed "favourites & collections" line at deviation pages ..you know..at the right side, in details - instead of usual "favourites"
