Just wanted to change the journal that I had up as it really was out of date. Things are pretty hectic my end at the moment with a change of job on the list of things to cope with. Im going to be working in a new resturant that is opening at the end of August and will be a quite high class traditional English restaurant but in the mean time because of the delays I am working in the owners other restaurant that is a huge Italian place serving about 300 people a night from a tiny kitchen. Now Im a more fine dining chef (with a rosette to prove it, although rosettes are bollocks really) so its a bit different for me but its fun, I have to switch off a little to the quality of the food but at the end of the day its bloody busy so they must be doing something right and everone likes pizza and pasta right?

As far as photography goes things have slowed down a little because of the work load but Im trying to get out as much as possible. Im sure that you can tell Im still enjoying infrared and I hope you arent getting too bored of that.

I hope that some of you may be interested in seeing some shots of the new restuarant I will be working in once its finished. We are having a baby grand piano and cool things like that so it will be a beautiful place to be.

Also due to the fact that I have wanted to keep in touch with the people in the place I just left I have made a Facebook.com page so if your on it then add me?! (Dave Giles, Southampton, England)

I hope this journal finds you all well.

Oh and on a final note. I have just got CS3 which has some great new additions but the infrared filter on the black and white conversion filter is just awful!

Chances are that not many will read this but I wanted to put up a quick update as to whats going on with me.

As I'm sure those who take the time to watch me will know, Ive bought a new camera. And of course, due to my new found interest inside the world of photography, its an infrared modified and dedicated one! This means that at the moment Im pretty much shooting everything in the invisible colour spectrum. For me its still really exciting and the world of IR still holds so much. For others on here I do realise that infrared photography does seem to have its boundaries. Basically it means landscapes with trees in white to alot of people. I still love to shoot the stereotypical landscapes too but because I know they are limited if alot are seen at once I have decided to limit my deviations at the moment so as not to bore everyone. I still follow the ideal that I post what I like and not what others may fave or comment on but I do feel I dont want to saturate peoples DEVwatches.

On the subject of DEVwatches I am now gettting around 40 deviations a day to look at and I do pay attention to every single one. So I hope that those who think I may be ignoring them in comments understand that its too hard to comment on every deviation but I still look at you and love your work. Every person I watch is worth it!

Ive also made a decision to stop saying "thanks for the fave" on peoples front pages as to be honest and not wanting to sound arrogant, this is taking up a good deal of time too. So please, if you do fave me, realise that I do honestly appreciate it.

Well thats it for now I guess. I hope this finds you all well.

Oh and I have an idea for a competition!! Keep your eyes peeled for my next journal.

Whore yourself on my page!

Those who watch me will know that since the sun has come out where I live I have become slightly addicted to infra red photography. During a look around other IR works on DA I stumbled across a new person to watch who had a great idea for a journal (or I thought so anyhoo). *RedStonePhoto's journal was simple. Ask to be featured in a list of ten and you got it! The only rule being that you also do a journal along the same lines featuring him in tenth place.

I thought it was a really good idea so I am now keeping my end of the bargain.

So its simple..... I am featuring 10 people in this journal, to get a feature simply ask an I will put up 3 pieces of my choice. But dont worry, I just like to feature people so I wont be asking you to continue the trend. (Of course if you WANT to then thats cool!)

I'm sure I will be sticking around but I just want to say thanks to all the people who have commented and helped me in the last year as I really do feel a sense of community here (although the community still has its berks too!). There are some people who I have met on here who have been very supportive to me and become a constant source of help. I'm not going to go into namechecking as thats not what this journal is about but thanks to the person who mentioned the site in the first place, the person who helped me understand aperture, the person who got me into macro and of course to the people who I know on as much of a personal level as the internet can give, its been good to talk some things through.

=amarand
=daliesque
*Serephiminelysium
=monkeyheadmushroom
*freakstate
=thesuper
*grymkrys

So here we go then.

When =amarand is ready, he will either choose, take or find (from stock) an image as the starting block. He will then post this into his scraps and send a note to the next in line with a link to it, this being =SunGryphon. Then =SunGryphon will take the image and manipulate it how they want and then post it in scraps and note the next in line with the link, this goes on until the end and we finish with a final image.

As you may have already guessed I have a little worry that people may take things a little far on their turn so just please remember that there will be alot of people working on the same image. But hell, lets just see how it turns up.

For people who arent really sure what to do or add you can do as little or as much (with the above remembered) as you want. Just some thing as simple as a levels change, a slight mess in saturation or hue of the whole or part of the image or even just a straight line weaving in and out can make a big difference and bring this idea to life.

If you do use brushes from deviantart please note who they are from and the same goes for if you want to add anything from any stock on here as when the final image is done I will be posting it (obvioulsy its all of ours so we can all post it if we want) with all the right credits.

One more thing, when you note the person next in line, could you please note me too as I would like to do a montage as we go of the way things changed.

Any questions, ideas or worries then either comment here or note me.

Have fun people

Photoshop Relay and update for "team members&

Anyone for a game?

Ok, here is the idea. "PHOTOSHOP RELAY". We start with one picture, taken by one of the team (we come to that later), that picture is then passed on to another of the team who does something with it. Nothing huge and not a full manipulation but something that they think shows the sort of style they like to put across. It can be adding, taking away, drawing on, ANYTHING as long as you do something to the picture. Then..... Guess what? Pass it on to the next member of the team who does exactly the same and passes it along until it reaches the final person and we have a totally different image!
I think it would be a really interesting thing to see what a few people with very different tastes would do to the same picture.
If you want to give it a try then note me and I will add your id here. Once we have a few people then I will decide a random order, starting with who takes the original picture. Any means of manipulation are open but all I would ask is that you dont manuipulate the whole, sure do a big part but leave some for the rest to play with and dont manipulate a part that has already been added.
I'm thinking the file can be passed between us by email to keep it a secret until we all see it at once.

Any Takers?

On the team so far,

~jeruki
=SunGryphon
*mintmintmoomoo

Big thanks to *density-tmr. He is not able to join but is spreading the word!

JOURNAL UPDATE 1:

Ok the team has started off well and looks like it may still grow, hopefully anyway.
*freakstate isnt avaliable until the 25th so I'm suggesting that we start this after that so that we are all around.

Once the team is finalised I will draw the names at random to choose the order we go in. The first person has what could be the easiest or hardest part. The original image. It would be really nice if this was an original piece, either photograph or drawing rather than a stock image. Thought needs to go into a piece that can have additions made or things taken away, so its quite a big part!

When it comes to your turn please dont manipulate things too much, remember there are going to be a few people after or before you so leave something to play with! Otherwise we are going to end up with a huge mess!! Also, please dont manipulate or delete too much of a prior manipultion, sure if you want to lay something over a part of someone elses then go for it but dont cover the whole thing!

Once the first person has started the file will be emailed to me so that I can then forward it to the next person and so on, this means I can take a copy of each stop and post a montage of the way it progresed at the end of the "race".

Anyway, I'm ranting and this is just an update.

Let me know if anyone has ideas or issues. For example how long do you think we should get with the image?

And please, you dont have to be a person who just does manipulations! We are all artists, not matter how good or bad you think you are we are here on the same art site. It would be great to get alot of different styles, from digital artists to nature photographers!

AND WE ARE STILL RECRUITING!

As I'm sure most of you who watch me know, I do tend to love rather random close up macro shots of things and share this passion with =amarand (who has some stunning macro images, go see) so we thought it would be nice to get to see if we could get a small community going so that people get to see some good quality macros. We want to keep this a nice size and will be posting a maximum of ten of our members deviantions a week so as not to over load people. Please take the time just to have a look at the account, and hey, maybe add it as we promise to show you some beautiful work from deviants you may not get to see. Just give us a little time to get going.
No other news really, work is bloody hot in the kitchen right now and thats about it.
Hope people are enjoying some of the manipulations I'm doing more of now and I hope that you agree I might actually be getting slightly better at them. Still more practice to get better though!

Take care people
Im not anywhere near not liking photography, far from it. But because of that I'm getting frustrated with myself. I dont know what I want to take anymore. I'm writting this after standing taking close up pictures of a cherry for half an hour, getting it into photoshop and then just thinking "why?". I really have enjoyed doing the funny coloured fruits but I guess this one made me think that I may be stuck in a rut. There are a few things I want to do but right now I'm just not confidant they are gonna come out how I want them so I might not bother trying and I know thats wrong. I shoot pretty much everything in portrait because for some reason, and I dont know it, I dont like shooting in landscape. Seriously, at least 95% of my stuff is damn portrait, even my landscapes are in portrait!!!!! Do I start doing landscaped framed things or respect the fact I just prefer portrait. Hmmm, sorry, having a bit of a rant and I dont expect any comments, just getting a few things out of my head and somewhere else.

First of all I would like to thank the people that commented on my imaginary freind journal. It was the first time I have attempted anything like that and I was glad to see some people enjoyed it, even though it wasnt the most well put together piece. But hey, for a first try at text in photoshop I didnt think it was that bad.

But I got a note from the DA staff.

Here is what they thought of my Imaginary friend tutorial.
Senga, one of my old waitresses has just left where we used to work together to follow her dreams in getting a modelling career. She is a very smart, caring and generous person who really helped me keep my sanity when we worked together. She has had a couple of photoshoots and has got herself on a website where she has the possiblility of getting a contract it seems, or something along those lines. It basically works on a voting system and thats where you guys and the power of Deviantart comes in so please please PLEASE do me one favour and just spend 2 minutes of your time to give a wonderful person a possible help up a rung of the ladder.

In the world of art that we have put ourselves in this community we will always need models and Senga has the personality and looks to go far.

What you have to do

Go to [link]

Click on the multi coloured screen

. A different screen will appear then click on elpis star (on the left hand
side)….

. Skip the intro (unless you want to watch it) then click on vote (grey
box)

. photos will appear so click on vote underneath on Senga Howells picture

. Then enter your email address in the box on the left hand side and click
vote to submit it

YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL WHICH ASKS YOU TO CONFIRM YOUR VOTE, PLEASE DO THIS OR THE VOTE WILL NOT COUNT.

Thanks guys for taking the time to read this. I will be forever in debt to those who take the time to vote, I have little to offer in return but my art so for those who do vote I can send a full size high res version of a shot of your choice, its not much but its all I have.

Thanks,
OH AND....................

<sub>

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

I’m now head chef at a little restaurant in Southampton called
Langley’s, a restaurant that I actually worked at earlier on in my career. I know that sometimes it’s not good to move back to places you have been before but with some of the other things going on this really is a step forward as long as things go to plan.
