Just thought I'd drop a line and say hey to all my fellow deviants out there. Seems I remember to update my journal seasonally now a days. Fall is here so I've been out in the woods as much as possible. Gotten a few good photos out of it too. I did get a deviant art print of some of my own work the other day and the quality of their products is pretty nice. I'm planning on making calendars for close friends and family members, and maybe a few mouse pads and coffee mugs too. DA has nice big thick mouse pads. I'm going to do a pet calendar for my wife, a cow calendar for my dad, and a farm calendar for some of my aunts and uncles. It's going to be part of their Christmas ....sssshhhhh. Well that's what's up with me so far, how are all of you doing?

Wow time flies, my last journal was in April! I haven't been on a whole lot here lately, had surgery a couple weeks ago and that has had me sidelined a bit. I had to get a new bellybutton, my old one was an inny which turned into an outy all of the sudden and apparently they aren't supposed to do that. Its all fixed now, I'm just on lifting restrictions, nothing over 15lbs for the next month which I'm trying to follow. I'm hoping everything will be good to go so I can get out in the woods hardcore once October is here. Hopefully all of you are getting along ok and if I've been slow to respond to anyone, now you know why.

That may not be a lot for some of you, but its kind of a milestone for me. Since I do mostly photography I will dedicate a photo to whoever gets the 4000th page view. Just send me a note telling me you made it and I will dedicate either my next sunset, landscape, or wild or domestic animal photo to you with a note in the author comments - your choice. Or if you so choose I can make a 3d picture frame (similar to my devID) for you to use if you supply me with a photo to put on it. Sound like fun?

Well as of Sunday I am officially 30 now. Hold the old jokes please! One of my 20something coworkers gave me a card that said "I was going to get you a humorous card, but then I remembered how easily people your age pee their pants." She's going to get it in a couple of years. My wife just almost pulled off one of the best surprise parties ever (the neighborhood gave me a surprise hog roast). I got a little suspicious when my neighbor showed up with a live pig a couple days before. It was an awesome party and everyone had a great time. I think we had about 40 people there.

I love the digital iso levels on it and it's ability to take pictures in near to total darkness (which comes in handy when I'm chasing the deer off into after the sunset). I will try to get some photos up soon. Figures, I get an awesome new camera and the whole week here has been dull gray weather and low animal activity. I am totally excited though, 2009 should be a great year in photos for me.

A close neighbor and friend of the family was killed in a tractor accident on Saturday. I had already heard the whole story and the brutal details a couple days ago, because news travels fast out here in the country. I just happened to be perusing the article about it online from our local newspaper and there at the bottom of the article was the dreaded link to reader comments. It was full of know it all's and sarcastic comments from members of my local community who clearly had no grasp of the gravity of the entire situation. Stuff, like "stupid old man, he should have sold his old tractor and bought a new one with proper protective equipment, I drove a tractor once and I'd never do something like that." The kind of mindless drivel you'd expect to see on a youtube video, but not what I'd figured to see on a local news website especially considering it involved a human being's death and in a place where friends and family of the deceased were sure to see it. As a bit of a self admitted net junky, it really made me think, how much has the internet altered our way of thinking and our empathy for our fellow humans? Just curious if any of you have had a similar experience or more intellectual opinion on the matter. It's really getting under my skin, but no point in starting a flame war or returning insults on my local news feed, the way I see it, my neighbor and his family deserve better than that.

So this weekend we went down to Kentucky with my wife's sister and brother-in-law to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Show. It was a bit of culture shock I must admit. I can now say I've been to both extreme liberal leaning events and extreme conservative leaning events. I'm happy to announce that I'm still happy in the middle of the political spectrum. It was pretty neat to see but my ears really hurt now. Some of those guns made my whole body shake just from the percussion blast 50 ft away. I posted some of the photos, and here is a youtube link of the shooting action: [link]

Ok this is just about to drive me friggn nuts. I have a Kodak Camera. I used to have a Sony Camera. The Sony was all like ohh movies? Windows, wmv format yay I like windows. The Kodak is all like I like Macs I only record in Mac mov format piss off stupid PC person. mov format is fine if you want every 5 minute clip to take up a 100MB and you only want to watch it at home by yourself on the free MAC quicktime viewer and thats all you ever want to do with it. I mean I really don't want to sit here for an hour while it uploads to youtube in mov format because the file is sooo friggn huge. I've looked at all the googles and tried all the free programs and its like yes we can do that, then its like oh wait you dont have this codec and then you need that codec and then it doesn't tell you what codec you actually need it just tells me that I am missing the needed codecs. My buddies are constantly hounding me to upload my demo derby footage because in their mind I'm the only one that knows how to work all the techy mumbo jumbo to get it online. I have 25 minutes of footage which is 320 MB in mov format and all I want to do is shrink it down to a nice manageable size so I can upload it to the internets, and I would prefer to do it without having to buy $100 worth of movie editing software. Besides if all my buddies keep coming over to my house to watch quicktime movies its going to cost me $100 in beer too. So has anyone else run across this problem and if so what was your solution? I even resorted to borrowing our ulead movie software from work today only to find that it takes 4 hours to translate from mov to mpeg and then the result is upside down video and choppy sound - Im sooo glad I didn't actually buy that program. Help please anyone? - and if you say the solution is to get a Mac, I might be removing my foot from your pretty little proprietary cd drive bay.

So I got a new computer tonight for free. A business I am close to just moved and got all new computers and threw all their old ones away. So I went dumpster diving and came out with a dell optiplex GX270 with P4 2.8GHz, 512MB ram, 40Gb HD, DVD, Cd burner, 17" monitor, etc, etc - not bad huh? So I took it home cleared my desk for another computer and promptly reformatted the drive and put a clean new version of Ubuntu on it. I've been wanting to try it for a long time and this was the perfect opportunity. I'll be keeping my windows machine since it has pretty good specs and all the software to do my CAD stuff and games on, but I plan on using this one for surfing and home stuff, and exploring the wide world of open source software.

So I stayed out till 3 in the morning fishing last night and then I went out this morning to help my dad on the farm. It was quite an adventure. We were riding along taking our wheat to market in the grain truck when something exploded and I done thought I'd gotten shot. The outside back tire blew on my side and made those lovely little rubber strips you see along the highway. Now I've had flat tires go before on my regular vehicles but that's nothing compared to the heart stopping excitement of a big truck tire with 350 bushels of wheat on top of it blowing up right in your ear! Luckily we were only 5 miles away from the grain station and we limped the rest of the way on 3 back tires hoping another one wouldn't go too. Once we were unloaded, we felt a lot safer going back home even though it still had quite a shimmy and the thumpity thumb from the bad tire. Then we got stuck in a traffic jam as there was a horrible accident ahead of us on the highway. We didn't see what actually happened but it must have been pretty bad as we waited quite a while in the traffic and then turned off and took some back country roads to get home. Sounds like a pretty bad ordeal but it really makes you think - If our tire hadn't gone out and slowed us down in the first place, we might have been part of the wreck instead of just stuck behind it?

It's official, any more engineering calculations and I just might be certifiably insane. I've been doing Finite Element Analysis for 3 days straight now. Thats where you model something on the computer, input the material stress strain properties, add loads and supports and then the computer tells you how much force it takes to destroy your part that you just designed. It sounds exciting but virtual destruction just isn't quite as much fun as the real thing in the engineering world Grand theft auto, yes (I'll take virtual warrants and police brutality over the real thing any day). Come to think of it real world engineering failures aren't that much fun either - I'm sure the passengers of the Titanic would agree with me on that one. Ahh but in the name of science it must be done. The drag of it is that the calculations take like 15 or 20 minutes a piece for the computer to run, so I set it all up, get everything just right, and then sit and stare at the progress bar for the next 20 minutes while my computer sits and thinks. Fun stuff kids.

This weekend was wonderful. Just a normal weekend but we had some crazy weather which made for really good picture taking. I didn't do too much other than that, worked in the garden some and helped my grandpa trim a tree that had fell down in the backyard which made me feel good because he is very independently minded and never asks for help even though he is going on 82 and lives alone.
Yesterday and today was a different story. I won't go into all the details but in an odd twist of fate after commenting last week that I'm very fortunate to have a very good job in these trying times, I found out that we are having serious money issues and that everyone will be taking a 28% paycut and going to a part time work week for the next couple of months in hopes of getting back on track. The people I work with are very good hard working people, but as a small medical research and engineering firm everything we do hinges on government approval to sell the stuff we design and make profits. Most of the startup costs are covered by private investors but the investors aren't willing to invest more until the government approves our latest project. It is under a "realtime" review which translates to me as hey this looks good or hey this sucks instant gratification - government guidelines define it as a 30 day waiting period with open dialog throughout. It's going on day 50 with no dialog from the other side which makes me wonder if?:

A: Some incompetent moron has lost our paperwork again and is too ashamed to admit to it.

B: It's wedding season and everyone is out on vacation to crash wedding parties.

C: Some large corporation with deep pockets and crappy medical devices has gotten wind of us and is scared of what we might accomplish thus leading to a secret payoff and deliberate loss of paperwork and communication.

D: It's just business as usual in Washington DC where crucial decisions that affect hundreds of people's very livelyhood are made by untrained monkeys who spin around on the wheel chance.

Needless to say I'm a little stressed out right now but maybe I will have some free time to do more art with my upcoming part time schedule.

In other news I voted for the very first time in my life on Tuesday. 29 Years and Ron Paul was the first candidate that I agreed enough with to actually vote for. I haven't voted before now because I don't hold with the picking the lesser of two evils theory. I'm also reading his new book and though only halfway through it, I have to say it is a pretty good read. I'm not much on politics and government in general but its the most informative and interesting book on the subject matter I've ever had the chance to pick up. I'm going to stop there because the book lays out the way things should be run and contrasting them with the way that they are currently run will only start a political rant - and I don't want to scare you all off this early in the morning.

Well after a 10 year hiatus I was finally able to make it back down to the sunny state of Florida for a so called vacation. The last time I went, I was 18 years old, fresh out of HS, and 2 weeks away from my first semester of College. My how time flies. Of all the times to go to Florida my dad took me in August, we drove the Brown Buick, in 95 degree weather, with no AC and the big cushy grandma seats that bout smother you to death anyways. It sounds like I might be complaining but it was actually a pretty fun trip just me and my dad back then. This time I went with my wife, my buddy, his girlfriend, and their 4 kids. This time was an adventure. It was almost something out of a Chevy Chase movie. But we had fun, nobody killed each other (barely) and we are all back home safe and sound. Needless to say I have lots of new photos and plan on uploading them in the near future.

Indiana residents have a saying (as I'm sure most other Midwestern states do as well) - If you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes. That is sure as heck true tonight. Driving home from work it was a balmy 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15.5C for those international folks out there) - hardly normal January weather for here. About 20 minutes ago a big thunder boomer swept through with lightening, rain, hail, 60 MPH winds and reports of tornadoes just north of us up in Indy. Right now it is about 35 (1.6C) and it's supposed to snow in a little bit. The reported low tonight ... 10 (-12C). Talk about a sudden change in temperature!

Not sure anybody actually reads these things but if your bored and have nothing better to do - here's my semi-monthly update. I shoulda got out and got some snow pics this weekend but I was lazy. I did get a couple of nice deviations done last week though. I had good intentions of going out this afternoon but I ended up delivering a baby instead. I know what you are thinking - its the wrong time of year and way too cold for that but it never fails - we always have one cow that is either way late or way early each year. I swear I think the bull is doing it across the fence when he is penned up sometimes. So there I was this afternoon chasing a heifer with feet sticking out of her butt across the frozen praire that was the consistancy of a mud flavored snowcone on the fourwheeler and trying to get her up to the barn (Ha ha have fun getting that imagine out of your head tonight). It all turned out good though - we got her up to the barn in time and it was a textbook delivery so we now have a bouncing baby bull and just in time for christmas. Well that's it for now, hope you all are having a good holiday

[link]

I also had this video on my computer for a while but finally posted it. My favorite part is when the rocket lands in the tree and Kim goes "Son of a ..." That's my quick disclaimer in case young ears are in the vicinity - otherwise it's very scientific and educational:
[link]

Random Survey

1.) Where did you get the shirt you're wearing?
The whole reason for filling out this silly survey was so that I could tell you that yes I got my shirt at the Tractor Supply Company in Illinois and yes I’m proud of it.

2.) Who do you currently like?
I like most people pretty much.

3.) Do they like you?
Most people do.

4.) Sunrise or Sunset?
I like both but sunsets are easier to catch in the summer when the sun rises early

Hey I'm such a fan of both here's a couple of my sunrise and sunset photos, you decide:
[link]
Sunrise on Lake Monroe
and...
[link]
Sunset on the Farm

5.) What time did you go to bed last night?
Way too late, I had to stay up for the post game show! GO COLTS!

6.) Time you woke up?
oh right around 7 – had to go to work ya know

7.) What movie is in your DVD player?
Well none at the moment but the last two movies I watched were &#147rimos Big Bucks 14” and “America - Freedom to Fascism,” what’s that you say? Sounds like a contradiction? What I can’t watch an intelligently directed independent documentary on the state of our county and a primal redneck hunting movie all in the same weekend? Says you now. Welcome to the idiosyncrasies that make me - me! On a side note I highly recommend the documentary to anyone that still believes in America, it’s amazing to see how the rich and powerful hijacked our country from us over 90 years ago and people are still too silly to sit up and notice. And if you like seeing a fun bunch of hunters take out some nice sized bucks (If that is your thing) I also have to give “Big Bucks 14” two thumbs up.

8.) When's your birthday?
Sometime in April – it will pop up in the birthday bulletin when it’s time. The reason I never give this kind of stuff out on surveys is that there are identity theft type of people that just sit and troll for this kind of information. In fact I’m quite sure they invented half the surveys out there on myspace. What’s your favorite color? What’s your dog’s name? What’s the last 5 digits of your bank account number? Of course if your bank password just happens to be bluerover they’ve already got it cracked and won’t even need the last 5 digits. When I take a survey I fill it out to be fun and entertaining – don’t take me serious on anything. However if you’ve laughed and chuckled to yourself with me this far, that was my shining moment of a Public Service Announcement right there.

9.) Last thing that pissed you off?
We actually had this debate a few days ago. I’m pretty happy where I am. Nothing is really getting under my skin at the moment. A few of my close friends (I won’t mention names) have been a little on the cranky side lately. I’m starting to think I’m the one that’s not normal.

10.) Are you cocky?
Not so much – unless we are playing football on the playstation – but you know that’s not really me, it’s the EAsports motto,”It’s in the game!”

11.) Can you speak French?
&#147arley vous Francais?” Well I know that phrase but a whole fat lot of good it would do me because I wouldn’t know anything replied back to it other than “we”

12.) Have you ever been to Mexico?
Nope but I want to go there sometime – Heck I might have to retire there if this country continues to decline.

13.) Do you make your bed daily?
Actually yes –surprising huh

14.) Your favorite movie?
Hmmmm I’m big on the Starwars and the LOTR. Geeky I know.

15.) Favorite TV show?
Ehhh not big on TV shows – I watch a little but find that most of it is mindless drivel.

16.) Single or taken?
Taken

17.) Do you own slippers?

Not sure if any of you are big American football fans or not, but if anyone is interested, I am heading up a fantasy football league, and still have a few open spots for people to play. The season lasts through the regular football season (September to December - 17 games). You basically try to pick your favorite players out of a draft and then play them each week against somebody else's favorites and who ever scores the most points wins. I tried it last year for the first time and it was a lot of fun. We need 12 players, and we currently have 7. Our draft is set up for September 2nd. If you are interested send me a private note with your email, and I will send you an invite.

The deer have been hitting the bean fields hot and heavy the last 2 weeks and I've been burning the digital film like it was going out of style. I finally got a nice buck photo. It wasn't the big bucks I've been seeing, but he was nice size none the less and I'll take it for now. That's the big challenge with photographing a mainly nocturnal animal - getting close enough to them in daylight to get a decent picture. I'll try to get some more pictures up when I get some extra time.

Just had to tell you all, I saw the most beautiful sunset last night, but I didn't get it on camera. I was out fishing on a boat at Cataract, a nice sized lake in northern Owen / southern Putnam counties in Indiana. We were out in the middle of the lake and booking back to be close to the boat ramp before the sunset so we wouldn't have to idle for like a mile and a half in the dark. I looked to my right and saw just the most glorious display of colors as the sun sank behind the tree line and reflected off of the glassy water. I had seriously thought about taking my camera but I'm always a little apprehensive with expensive electronics on boats and the water and all. In hind sight I think it would have been worth the risk.

Well it is 2 AM and I am up way too late. Here is some fun stuff you all might want to check out though. I went camping last weekend in Southern Indiana at a fire festival. I got some really cool video footage of all the performers and finally got it all pieced together at the following location:
[link]

Seeing all the cool stuff there inspired me to finish the fire staff I have been working on for a while, and I lit it up for my 2nd burn earlier tonight. We got some nice video of that too which is located at:
[link]

I'm still a little slow with it but hey, it's only my 2nd burn on the staff.
The garden is doing very good as well. This week I was able to get my first peas and colliflower out of it as well as an early jalapeno pepper. I also have tons of broccoli, lettuce, spinach, and onions right now.
I'm working on a couple 3-d design things at the moment, but finding myself getting sleepy and unmotivated. I do have one more fun link to share though. I have a guest map for all my friends across my different social websites, so if you are still reading this and have nothing better to do, stop by and sign it. You know you want to:

It's quite amusing to see which of my deviations get viewed and which don't, now that I have a little bit of variety posted in my gallery. Some of the ones that I think are really good or interesting get like 3 to 6 views, while some that I almost considered scraps have gotten like 100-300 views. It kinda makes me wonder on the whole psychology to the keyword and title choosing process. Of course then I wonder if there is a co-relation between the timing of the submission or not. Do submissions posted during peak usage hrs (seemingly late afternoon to 11PM - prime time) get viewed by more random users browsing the latest entries than say one posted in the middle of the night / early morning? Just curious, have other users noticed this with their deviations, or am I just weird and think about insignificant details way too much? Either way, hope you all are having a good afternoon Now I'm goona go get some hotwings for lunch.

I'm new here so I thought I would devote my first journal entry as an introduction to the idiosyncrasies that make me - me. That of course should be obvious by the wide gamut of current things list that may appear to be full of contradictions, or things that just don't quite seem to fit. I am a simple farm boy raised in the mid-west United States and fairly moderate in my politics. I live in a very conservative rural area close to a small college town, so of course all my rural neighbors think I'm a raving mad hippie while the town folk might easily dismiss me as just another uneducated redneck. I dislike being forced into stereotypes. I have a lot of hobbies: model rocketry, fire poi, gardening, farming, enjoying the outdoors, car audio and home electronics, as well as exploring photography and art - which is how I ended up here in the first place. My style is a little on the technical side - I spend my day time as an engineering technician designing medical devices on a 3-d CAD system. I enjoy drawing animals, vehicles, landscapes, ect, and like to experiment with different mediums. Well that's a start into understanding me I suppose. I'm always open to questions providing anyone is still reading this of course - I know the internet has a tendency to lead to short attention spans.
