Some of you will remember that last week I stated that "Originality" might well be the last rant of my series.

Well, it's true! After many weeks of spreading enlightment (if not exactly peace) throughout the land, I've made the decision to step down from my status as Most Holy Goddess of Long-Winded and Caustic Rants, as Leland might term it.

This is because, for me at least, it's the last Sunday before the new school term begins. All honors classes, advanced maths, CAPT preparation, the whole bit. As much I love writing this, and as much as I love the feedback, my busy schedule (I'm also taking part in an extracurricular arts program and possibly doing some outside acting) won't allow for these weekly bits.

So, as this is technically a rant journal, I'm going to take this time to review the points I've made in the last eight weeks.

--References, like ellipses and puns, should be used sparingly. They don't allow for originality or improvement!

--Mediocrity is never a good thing, and nobody likes to see it. Improve yourself, knowthyself and your capabilites.

--Complaints are idiotic. Nobody wants to see them, either, especially if you've got worse grammar than a three-year-old Chinese love child.

--Style is important. Make your own, love your own, but don't steal somebody else's. Also, all styles are not created equal!

--Etiquette, like in real life, is important on the web, especially in a community of artists. (Also learned that week: don't get involved in a flamewar with Eileen. It is not pretty, and you will always lose.)

--Inspiration is necessary to the creation of art.

--Originality is also necessary. Fanart is usually bad and makes the baby Jesus cry.

You can also consider the overall theme of the series, as pointed out by *Quisa:Try to better yourself and your art through your own exploration and creativity.

Well, my Constant Readers, this is where it all ends. I would like to thank all of you, but especially *Quisa and *queen-of-cupcakes, who have been there since the beginning; ~Orihime922 for, in a roundabout way, inspiring me to do my first rant; ~Lizard-, who always brightens up the comment section with her witty repartée; and last but not least, ~Sheltan, who one day said "Fuck yes darling, keep telling it like it is."

Maybe someday (maybe one Sunday next year) I'll come back and shock the community with my loud obsession for self-expression. Until then, my friends; for my sake, never let the flame go out.

So, originality. Like inspiration, it's necessary to art. Just to clear this up, you're not original if:

--you use a reference for absolutely everything

--all you draw is fanart of bad (or good, or mediocre) anime

--you use other people's ideas, such as taking a certain pose, etc. from them

--everything you draw has been done to death already

Now that we've discussed the bare bones of unoriginality, I'm going to explicate.

As I've said, I think that originality is necessary for art. Fanart is fine--in small doses, that is. I recognize that I, indeed, used to draw fanart, but I've seen the error of my ways. Keep your shitty inside-joke filled fanart of Inuyasha giving it to Shippo to yourself. Nobody wants to see it, and if they do, they probably frequent 4chan. Go there and desu your heart out.

Now, using other artist's ideas is just stupid. Not only will you be caught and reprimanded, you'll never learn or grow. At least some fanart is original.

As for the last thing, nobody wants to look at something that's been done to death already. For example, the artist I was talking about last week and his deadly dull still lifes of flowers. He's pretty much faded into obscurity (sad for an artist as young as he was, really) and that was probably because his art was eminently, astoundingly boring. If you can manage a new spin on something old, that's good; that's great, actually. Good for you. But if it's one of those same old themes or ideas, it'll be boring.

Inspiration was an interesting suggestion, as it happens to tie in, in its own fashion, with some of my previous topics, such as mediocrity and references. It's also a topic that focuses more on art itself than the artistic community on dA.

Inspiration is something that's necessary for art. For a lot of people, this may be obvious. However, with the demand (of watchers, or fans, or friends), people seem--and this is just a guess--to take/make pictures just in order to update.

Therefore, the product is mediocre. Remember, my children, this is not a good thing. What comes out is something ordinary and bad. Personally, I think it's better to wait to update than to update regularly with crap/mediocrity. If you've an idea, go put it down on paper. If you see something that's beautiful, take a photograph. Artists, don't waste your sketchbook on half-erased doodles and the like; photographers, don't spam your watchers' inboxes with plain and unexciting sceneries.

For example, there was a local artist--he was only about my age, not very old--who had extraordinary talent. But he had no soul in his art. The was no inspiration. There was a still life of flowers; there was a painting displaying a night sky. They were extremely well-rendered, but failed to stand out in that they were, by matter of subject manner, sadly boring.

(Drawing for a deadline is different, of course, if it's your only way of living; but if your only source of income is your art, you should be able to work things out on your own, no? If not, I suppose you should consider another career choice. ;D)

Online as in real life, etiquette is important. It's becoming more and more apparent, though, that people seem to forget it.

On a community like this (that is to say, a community of artists) etiquette is particularly important. Let's face it: artists are, by nature, very fragile. No matter how you gild the lily, we have very large (and fragile) egos, false modesty be damned. If we really didn't like our work, we wouldn't post it; most people who say they hate it are just fishing for compliments. But the point here is, artists' feelings can be easily hurt. If someone trashes your art, you feel bad. Therefore, be nice about other people's work.

This all boils down to what can be called the "dA Golden Rule":

Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

Or, in the terms of a certain philosopher: Do not do to others what you would not have done to you.

They amount to the same thing: play nice, kiddies. If you want a comment, then go and comment. If you want a fave, get out of your hole of snobbery and put out a good word on something. If you want critique, give critique.

And if you don't want to be insulted, don't start a pointless flame war.

Not only will people reciprocate if you're kind to them, but hey, you just might get some karma-points. Think about that one.

EDIT: Personally, I don't mind v5 very much. I was originally kind of shocked because it was new, but I think I like it. It isn't all that ugly, and I do like the new comment settings. The thumbnails have got me a bit "oogy," in the words of King, but there is some merit to them. All in all, then, I think it looks fine.

So, style. Style's an interesting thing, I suppose. Everyone's got one in that everyone has a different hand and therefore uses their pencil (or mouse) in a different fashion. However, there's also style: that us to say, the umbrella under which yor art falls. For example, I draw either anime or realism; my girlfriend Raine has a cartoony (Western) style.

And then some people choose to draw in a "jhonenesque" style.


I have to say that this is a personal pet peeve of mine. I don't like it when people draw in a style similar to that created by Jhonen Vasquez. It isn't that I dislike the style; on the contrary, I've been a JTHM fan since 2002 or so. Maybe 2003; I don't really know or care. The reason I don't like it is this: it amounts, basically, to art theft.

When people draw in this style, they're essentially staling the hard work of Vasquez, who has developed his own style, all by himself. I believe that Jhonen's devout followers (read:copiers) should take a cue from him and do their own work.

Anime is different from that, because anime isn't one specific way of drawing developed by one specific person. There are guidelines to it (large eyes, exuberant hair, vibrant colors and cell shading) that make it considered anime; but it's possible to develop your own style while still belonging under the umbrella of anime.

I also dislike when people hide behind style as an excuse. If something is out of proportion or just downright wrong, people defend themselves by saying it's their style. If it's complete shit and you tell them so, they chalk it down to style. Certain things such as large noses or high eyebrows can be attributed to style, while many other things (wobbly/bad lineart, bad coloring, etc.) can't.

Conversely, it's not right to attack someone solely because of their style. Everyone has their own tastes; I, personally, don't like some of Rumiko Takahashi's work, while some people enjoy it immensely. Respect other people's artistic boundaries.

This journal's been rather meandering, and in keeping with that fashion, I'll add a final note: I don't like when people claim not to like something, art-wise, because it's popular. For example, people who claim to hate anime just because they want to come off as rebellious and cool. I don't like those kind of people in the first place, but in art, it's especially annoying.

I really hate when people make journals complaining about utterly meaningless shit. When I rant here, I talk about problems centered mainly here on dA; but the people I'm talking about (not really anyone in particular) just whine and bitch (mainly in capitals) about how nobody loves them/their art.

For example:

nobdy comments my pics.................................and IM' SICK OF It.....

and liek when they do its just ;ike "OMG KAWAAII" snd nothing useflu....nobody really pay attention to my shit nemore.....

plus i hate that evry1 faves and dosent comeent..............likw why did u like my work? id' realy liek to no why.....

oh and worse i do'nt get ne pageveiws nemore.......

That was a little exagerated, but I did manage to get the point across. Here's what I, personally, find wrong with that:

Don't complain about your lack of comments. There's probably a reason why. Either you aren't that good, or you aren't well known. I only get three or four comments per piece, but then I'm not out there meeting new people and whoring myself out on the forums. Again, there's a reason.

Don't complain about getting favorites without comments. Sure, it's a little bothersome, and if it really pisses you off you can ask the favoriter to explain themselves, but most people are lucky to even get favorites. Don't take them for granted.

Don't complain about lack of pageviews. Really, nobody cares. It's the internet. Stop taking shit like pageviews or watchers so seriously.

I'm of the opinion that one's personal life should remain simply that-- personal.

Look.

I don't care about your personal life.

I never have...

...and I most likely never will.

Furthermore? You can say I'm a jealous lesbian Nazi bitch, but it all boils down to this: I do not want to see it or hear about it. I do not want to see you groping your beloved significant other. I do not want to see you cuddling (read: dryhumping) on my couch, or on anyone's couch for that matter. Frankly, nobody wants to see it. There is a limit to what one can display in public.

Normally, I'd say to let your own discretion be your tutor. Unfortunately, people's judgements are becoming lax. I repeat: there is a limit to what one may do in public.

There are, of course, exceptions: when it truly doesn't bother those around you, or if certain circumstances only allow you to be with your significant other rarely. I, for example, rarely get to see my girlfriend. However, I still exercise restraint, particularly around those who implore me for it.

Again, ladies and especially gentlemen: there is a fine line been what is acceptable and what is not. Please consider the emotions of others around you and excercise restraint when you feel the urge. Thank you.

John Cleese's Letter to America

To the citizens of the United States of America

In light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and
thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of
your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, will resume monarchical
duties over all states, commonwealths and other territories (except
Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Tony Blair, will appoint a governor for America
without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be
disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine
whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following
rules are introduced with immediate effect:

1. You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Then look up "aluminium," and check the pronunciation guide. You will be
amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour', 'favour'
and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without
skipping half the letters, and the suffix "ize" will be replaced by the
suffix "ise."

3. You will learn that the suffix 'burgh' is pronounced 'burra'; you
may elect to respell Pittsburgh as 'Pittsberg' if you find you simply
can't cope with correct pronunciation.

4. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to
acceptable levels (look up "vocabulary"). Using the same twenty-seven
words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is
unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.

5.There is no such thing as "US English." We will let Microsoft know
on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted
to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of
"-ize."

6. You will relearn your original national anthem, "God Save The
Queen," but only after fully carrying out Task #1 (see above).

7. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. November 2nd
will be a new national holiday, but to be celebrated only in England .

1. Good food. I know, I know. But it really does make me happy.

I mean, when I actually eat. I don't eat too often, actually, and I'm hardly ever hungry. By the way, these are in no particular order.

2. Meeting good people, or making friends. I always assume that people are horrible until they prove me otherwise, for the most part, and it's a pleasant surprise when I meet someone I truly like or respect.

3. Dreaming. I have cool dreams. Also, lots of my dreams are continuations of the ones I've had in previous nights.

4. The arts. I love the arts. That's why I'm on here, obviously. I not only love drawing, but singing and dancing and acting; just creativity in general.

5.Nature, animals, and the like. I love early spring and fall, but hate summer. Snow is good, but far too quiet and somehow insidious; rain has rhythm. I also like sunsets. Animals are amazing, and I love them all.
