Holiday Cards 2009
They will be mailed out this evening! Technical difficulties were responsible for the delay, but all should be good now. It would be great if you could let us know when you receive your card. We don't want to be left wondering if they got lost.

Other Goings-On
If you haven't already learned through LJ or Twitter, starting this Friday I will be working at a scented candle store in the nearby mall. I am fed up with the way the company I currently work for handles my paychecks. After almost a year of nagging, they still refuse to change their habits (not paying me every two weeks, unlike what we agreed on when I was hired; only paying me when they remember or when I'm knee-deep in bills and begging, etc.) and I see no signs of being given the full-time gig, so it's time to go. I will be getting paid more at the candle store anyway. Unfortunately, all I do is sell candles. There's nothing web design-related involved.

Oh well. I intend to find a better job while I have this one.

Anyone see the season finale of Dexter last night? OMG, I did not see that coming. It saddens me, though. Next season will be a bit lonely...

It's that time o' year again!

Anyone interested in receiving a signed holiday card from *Busiris and myself this Christmas? Each card is a printed Christmas-themed artwork by us (size is roughly 4" x 6"), with a little handwritten holiday greeting by the both of us addressed to the recipient.

Address: (please include your country if you don't live in the United States)
Dedication: (i.e. "To Bob"--let me know who you want the card to be signed to; can be your real name, username, etc.!)

Please double-triple-quadruple-check your address! Last year we had a few cards bounce because you guys spelled your addresses wrong! ALSO: Please format your address as it should appear on the envelope, as sometimes address formats outside of the U.S. are different to me!

Kids! If your parents are the paranoid type, please ask permission or let them know that you are going to receive a card from us before signing up so they don't freak out over you receiving mail from strangers.

We won't be printing out the cards until we get an exact number of participants! Cards will be sent out the day after and, depending on where you live, it will take a few days to a week or so to arrive.

Quarter machine trades!

How do you do a quarter machine trade? You trade handmade art in quarter machine capsules! Here are some steps:

1. Participants post a wishlist and/or set of hints, guidelines and interests that will help others decide what to make for them. Can be as specific or as open to interpretation as you like.

2. Contact somebody else who has posted a wishlist and ask if they would like to trade.

3. Go out and buy something from a quarter machine. Take the original toy out of the capsule and make something else to go in there, using your tradee's wishlist as a guide.

4. In keeping with the spirit of getting surprise loot from an actual quarter machine, it is recommended that you do not make specific requests. However, this is completely up to you. It's your trade!

5. Once your prizes are made, put them in their capsules and mail them to each other.

Guidelines:

DON'T BE LAZY. Put as much effort into your half as you would like the other person to put into theirs. Materials needn't be expensive, but they should be durable and your work should look nice. Treat your prize as an art piece.

Make sure that you are both working with the same size capsule (if this is important to you).

Be creative! Consider the quarter machine capsule as a form of presentation, not just a container.

Be sure to sign your work, and/or the capsule that you send it in.

Prize suggestions:

Handmade sculptures or figurines

Flat artwork on tiles, sturdy cardboard, etc.

Pins/buttons with your art on them

Mods of existing toys*

Keychains, charms, bracelets or other wearable art

*These should clearly be MODS. I.E, don't just paint a plastic kangaroo a new color--sand off its head and sculpt a new one, attach wings from a different toy, glue spines on its back and then paint the entire thing in stripes. Put your mark on it.

I haven't been practicing web design as much as I should and I have surprisingly few design tasks at work (most of it is front-end development), so I am thinking about dedicating the month of November to catching up. I need to beef up my portfolio, anyway.

So it'll be 30 website designs in 30 days. Because I don't want this activity to take up all of my free time, I'll also be limiting myself to an hour per design, kinda like speed-painting.

I took the 100 artist prompts commonly seen around here and picked 30 random keywords from it. Each prompt will be the subject/inspiration for a website I will design.

Saw Paranormal Activity this past weekend. While it was an interesting film, it doesn't live up to the hype. Seriously, it's not scary unless you are a religious nut or have a strong belief in supernatural forces or--taking from *Busiris's comment on the jumpy audience in the TV commercials--you had too much coffee. I did like that their kitchen looks like the kitchen of my old apartment, lol (coincidentally also in San Diego).

Any movies you saw this past year that didn't live up to your expectations?

I'm running out of journal titties. :\ Actually, seems I've been running out of journal subjects lately. My life is that boring.

Well, I bit off more than we could chew with these cupcakes. At one point we were all "Ugh, SUGAR." and couldn't finish them before they went stale. So we ended up tossing half of them (there were 18 in all--the photo only shows ones that contained letters and one of four Bu-Cakes). That, and because we thought we were gonna have the apartment fumigated on Monday and didn't want any food lying around (the old woman living across from us has a grossly unkempt apartment, so when she suddenly left for the hospital some weeks ago the little insect bastards migrated to ours >:U). Turned out the fumigation's actually this coming Monday...

I guess winter weather is upon us, as I keep freezing my butt off in bed and getting all Trinity Killer in the shower (kudos to those who got that reference). My plastic inflatable mattress absorbs the cold, so I have to double-up on sheets and PJs to keep warm. Last night for sleepwear I wore sweats over my jeans and had on a puffy winter coat with gloves. I keep telling Bu that I need longjohns. I can't wait for the building to turn on the radiators.

I saw a lot of movies in theatres within a one-week period. 4, to be exact (which isn't a lot when I think about it, as I've seen more before). District 9, Ponyo, The Hangover (finally XD), and Inglorious Basterds. I also managed to snag two tickets for the 15-minute preview of James Cameron's Avatar, which I saw yesterday.

District 9 was simply beautiful. I'm bad at writing movie reviews and sounding intelligent at the same time, so I'll just say that there were body horror elements involved that I, of course, loved and that the ending made me cry a little inside.

Ponyo was okay. Not the best Miyazaki film, in my opinion. I'm just not a fan of children.

The Hangover is a movie that came out 2 months ago and I'd only just seen it last week. I can see now why it's still making money (the theatre we saw it at was packed--quite rare for a movie released 2 months ago). If you haven't seen it yet and would like a good laugh, catch it now while it's still in theatres. The ending is a real treat.

Inglorious Basterds was a good film. I'm not much of a Tarantino fan, but unlike most of his other films I've seen, I actually had characters I could care about (I know it's all about the dialogue, but it's hard to capture my attention when all a person does is ramble :\ It's not just in movies, either, but in real life too). I enjoyed this movie even more than Kill Bill.

The Avatar 15-minute preview was very pretty. The first teaser trailer was released on Thursday, but I felt I didn't get a real first look until the preview yesterday. The CG was very real, especially with the cat-like creatures, who looked more like actors in makeup. I would like to see the entire movie now.

I love how it's gone from "WTF is this movie about, James?" to "OMG, I have to see it!" in a matter of a few days.

Other stoofs: my birthday was enjoyable. I received a lot of DVDs and a few books, notably Junji Ito's graphic novels Uzumaki and Gyo. I was first introduced to his work via The Enigma of Amigara Fault, which I found through an internet meme. Even though I've only read the first volumes of each, his work is pure love. I don't read a lot of manga, but these seem worth clinging to. It's got the body horror aspect that I enjoy and the stories give me chills. I need to get the next volumes as soon as I get paid.

I'll need to look into his other series, too.

...Well, this is the longest journal I've written in awhile. Sorry for not replying to many of your comments, even though I do read and appreciate each and every one. I'll get around to replying to everyone eventually.

God, this year is looking bleak. Okay, so Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays all kicked the bucket recently, but none of them were as effective on me as today's Hughes death. Unlike the others, he did things that really mean a lot to me.

Mr. Hughes was responsible for two of my top 5 favorite films of all time (Ferris Beuller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club). Many of his other works have never failed to entertain me either. There's just something about his writing that makes his movies memorable.

Rest in peace to a great filmmaker, John Hughes. We won't forget you! *corny*

I feel a need to curl up and watch those two films now.

I was waiting for *Busiris to post his Comic Con recap before I wrote this journal, because I am lazy. Go read if you're interested, since I was pretty much clinging to him the entire time (except for a brief few hours when we were separated during an attempt to attend both the James Cameron's Avatar and Dexter panels at the same time--failing and resulting in Bu being red and crispy).

Okaaaaaaaaaay, I am not lazy enough to not post pictures of my SDCC goodies, so here they are:

A lot of these photos are terrible because the auto focus on my Canon decided not to work today.

Talked to my supervisor this morning and the final say is: they won't hire me as a full-time developer because of budget cuts. Buuuuuuuuut, I get to stay on part-time for as long as I want or until I find a better job. Plus, my supervisor will try to find some freelance stuff I could do on the side.

Well, at least I'll still be employed and wouldn't have to worry about finding another job anytime soon. B: Yes, I'm disappointed, but as long as I get my paychecks on time I should be good. I may open up for commissions again to cover "fun" expenses, though... More on that later.

Money, money, money...

I'm trying to think of some kind of commission I can keep doing without discontinuing it out of boredom or because it takes too long to complete. Any ideas?

So far all I can think of are quick sketches, as these take me from 10 to 30 minutes to complete, given the character design or pose isn't too complicated. After breathing down ~atomicfiction's LiveJournal for the past several months, I am also wondering if I should do icon commissions too. Not pixel icons (if you are not familiar with pixel art, then you should know that doing these things takes a lot longer than the final piece lets on), but normal 100x100 icons. Commission collabs?

I can't do anything like colored full-body art lately due to my lack of pose ideas. Maybe I could take on some sketch commissions to improve on that. Maybe. Posing characters discourages me a lot. I also get impatient with inking. It wouldn't be as bad if I weren't so paranoid about messing things up with traditional inking. Inking with a tablet... has become more tedious and less fun to me.

If I had a well-paid job, I wouldn't have to worry about commissions and could instead work on my own personal artwork. *sigh*

Actually, I should know for sure by the end of this week if I will be working full-time as a web developer. God, I hope I get it...

I have not been feeling well for the past few weeks. Two weeks ago I had a fever, and from last week to present I've been having a persistent cough. I wasn't able to draw in a breath without getting the feeling of something caught in my throat. That's gone now, though, and I currently have general rawness. I finished off half a bag of Halls (which belonged to my roommate >_>), a bag of Ricola, and another roll of Halls.

Swine flu? No, that's silly.

We got an air conditioner yesterday, which was fun to put together and install. During this past weekend our apartment had been a sauna. Even I was complaining and I was raised on humid weather. Now it's too cold. XD

Arts? Been working on various things, but nothing worth posting here (*cough*checkLJ). I need to finish up a contest (non-dA) entry due Monday and I'll probably submit that one here. Geez, time goes by fast.

I found a neon green unruled composition book among the random junk I brought with me when I moved. It was a notebook I used for Graphic Communications in high school (which was a waste of time because the entire year was spent doing nothing but listening to shoddy hip-hop and obnoxious teens).

Yay, now I have paper for practicing with a pencil. There's a crappy sketch of a dragon on the last page, lol...

So I heard I made $60 at Kawaii Kon, which is sexy. It's a small number, but I didn't make much merchandise to begin with (about $30 worth of prints, stickers, and bookmarkers). I underestimated the stickers, which sold out the first day. I only printed about 40 of them. Next time I'll print out 100 or more. I was afraid that nothing would sell, because 1) it's all original work, not fanart; 2) my style isn't very animu; and 3) I wasn't there. Turns out I need to stop putting myself down like that.

I also would have made actual profit if it weren't for FedEx's overpriced shipping. I was going to use USPS, but a balding, fuck-ugly hag wouldn't let me wrap up a used box in brown paper to hide the old shipping labels on itÂmy fault for waiting to wrap it when I was already in the post office.

But it was fun, even though I wasn't there to sell them in person. I doubt any of my customers will see this, but I really appreciate the support. Also thanks a bunch to =Ne0Xer0, ~Pinponn, and especially ~chibiyoshi for representin' me!

I guess a lot of con attendees who recognized my work didn't know I was from Hawaii, either.

Spending three and a half years living on the mainland must do that to you. If my current job goes well, I wanna see about saving for a plane ticket for next year!

No, not that kind.

(at least, I hope not) Starting tomorrow or Friday or next week I'll be setting up a fixed time on weekdays for working on art. It'll be a minimum 60-minute block in the evening, maybe longer if there's nothing else to do that day.

I'd like to see myself keeping this habit and maybe I can get artwork done faster instead of dawdling. Drawing *almost* everyday would also keep me fresh, instead of going weeks without picking up my tablet pen. Maybe keep some kind of log, too, to keep myself motivated.

Also many thanks for the response to my previous journal.

The intention wasn't to reveal myself to those not already aware, but I guess it's safe to be honest, too. I do hope the people that journal was targeted at got the hint.

I guess I should reinstate this since it's been over a year and perhaps twice as many people know me now than last time. And because I will be meeting a few of you in person later this year!

Respect the gender preference or you'll look like a retarded Bible thumper. I'd been seeing the opposite a lot in the past month alone and I felt it time to say something.

Some of you may remember December 2007 when I came out with the whole transgender thing. Yes, I am technically still a girl, but please, don't call me one. Just don't. It offends and I am sure other trans agree. It's offensive because we don't enjoy that label to begin with.

Family (because they keep forgetting/are in denial), employers, and the general public are the exception, as most of them don't know anyway (I still love Starbucks employees--either they are easy to fool or they know). I know it's easier to be a boy online, but I try my best in the real world as well (when appropriate). Because it's easier online, I expect you guys to accept my choice (despite a common rule that the internet shouldn't be taken seriously).

Feel free to ask questions, though I may not be able to answer all of them. :U

Other news:

My finger is still healing. It's mostly scab and an odd-looking hole, but it looks better than it did three weeks ago. I still can't use it because it still hurts when I press lightly.

Also, that Ustream bandwagon... anyone interested watching me work? Right now all I have to work on are commissions and art trades and I'll have to ask my clients if they're okay with the public display, but I thought I'd ask anyway. If there's interest, I'll post a later journal with a schedule or something. I am generally shy when it comes to drawing in public and I want to get over my fear of that.

Seriously, I am a danger to myself. Remember how I said I fell down the stairs last week? Well, this morning I cut off a bit of my finger while making breakfast. The pathetic part is that the wound was inflicted with a serrated butter knife.

I made my roommate take a half day off from work to come home and take me to the hospital. ._.;; Man, it was a good thing my dad's insurance still works. We were there for about 3 hours, which isn't bad. It's the shortest time I've ever spent in one (as a patient). And there was free hot chocolate in the waiting room! Because the cut was too close to the fingernail, my finger was patched up with medical glue instead of stitches. Afterward I got a tetanus shot because that butter knife wasn't clean.

Eh, maybe I was in too much of a panic and it's probably just a flesh wound... *cue graphic description* If having my fingertip sliced off is considered a flesh wound. Really, the only reason it didn't fall off was that it was attached to my fingernail. If I peeled it back I could probably see the inside of my finger. The two pieces aren't perfectly aligned, though, so I wonder if I will have a killer scar there when/if it heals. The sliced off piece is looking a bit pale and gray, which makes me a little concerned. :<

XD I know, I know...

"But Neekko! Didn't you say last year that you ripped the skin off your right thumb with a hole puncher?"

Yeah... I'm not very kind to my fingers! We also need a medical kit in this apartment! *nags to roomie* But good news: it happened to my left hand this time. So I can still hold a pen. But hitting Ctrl + Z will be a little tough. I already smashed my wounded finger into the keyboard twice today.

In short: I am now employed as a web designer at an ad/marketing agency, but not before taking a nasty fall down some stairs and missing Wednesday's now-irrelevant interview.

Wee. :> And now I am more chipper than usual. I guess not having a job was bringing my spirit down.

~~I still have another interview later today. Seeing as my current job is part-time and doesn't pay much, maybe I could snag another to make up for it.~~ Lulz, I got that one too. So now I have two part-time design jobs. HOT.

And because dA is pretty stern with penis art--and that I refuse to submit any more pixel art here--here's a little treat I worked on last night:

It's based on the barrel man, a wooden figure that's sold as a souvenir in the Philippines. Probably one of the very few things about my ethnic background that I don't despise. I used my own barrel man as reference.

That, and some pixel fruit, has been the only art I worked on in the past two weeks. I'd been in a mouse-clicking mood. Once I figure out the schedule of my new job, I'll hop back into the art I owe. I've been thinking a lot lately about traditional art and I think I'm going to try to use a pencil more as well.

I always fail to bring this up: I had to remove a few of you off of MSN and AIM because you never talk to me or because you keep changing your display names so much that I don't recognize you anymore. If we'd spoken more than a few times then you're likely still on the list. Sorry about that.

My replying to messages kinda slowed down over the weekend. I'll pick it up later today.

I had my first interview for a web design job on Friday. I am unsure how well that one went. It was mostly talk about the company and the interviewer answering phone calls. He asked a few technical questions and also doesn't know what ActionScript is. Which made me mildly relieved. A woman was vacuuming the carpet during the interview, so that was a bit distracting. I was also amused by a pile of silk lingerie in the cubicle next to us.

Busy week!

I have two more interviews this week. On Wednesday I have to go to this farther-than-the-ad-stated church for a measly 10 hours/week job that's almost not worth it due to traveling time. On Thursday I have an interview for a paid internship with a design company in town. I hope I get that one because it requires the least amount of public transportation transfers.

I love how my first 4 months after graduation brought me no job leads, but now interviews are coming from everywhere I apply to.

My roommate and I went to see Dead Alive/Braindead at the theatre on Saturday. They gave us barf bags and the girl next to me smelled funny. The movie was fun, as it always is. :>

Aaaaahhh, so I finally got some unlaziness into my life and reduced the amount of comments in my message centre from... some ridiculous number... to ~~700~~ ~~666~~ ~~599~~ 458 + any replies I get after replying. ~~This sadly doesn't include the replies section.~~ x_x I also deleted without replying to any journal comments from months ago, as the subjects discussed are likely irrelevant today (and you've all probably forgotten ).

I may do more later today, depends on my mood. I've had this lack of motivation, not for art, but for interactivity. If you know me on Facebook you've probably noticed I haven't logged into most of my apps in awhile, hurr... As always, if something's super freakin' important, my AIM and MSN info are posted on my profile. You'll get a quicker response through those. Notes work too, but I'm actually not that quick with those.

I need employment like hardcore. ;_; At this point I'll take almost anything short of working in fast food (and those super-hard programming jobs, lol). I really want something degree-related, but at this rate it seems unlikely. Got a few interested employers, but that's pretty much nothing to me until I hear "You're hired!". Oh well, I have 2 more months before I start paying back loans. Let's hope for something good!

Correct me if I'm wrong _{(and I have been on several occasions)}.

From my understanding, it's okay to submit traced/eyeballed artwork on dA when you state references, don't claim it as original work, and/or submit it to Scraps or Fan Art, given the original artist doesn't report you. _{Did I read that right?}

I know copying and the like helps artists educate themselves, but from what I've seen, most of the "artists" on this site (and elsewhere) who contribute such works aren't doing it to learn.

*rant*

For a long time King of the Hill has been my number one TV/cartoon show. I enjoyed it because it wasn't silly like most cartoons. It was more of a sitcom, with real-life situations. There were goofy times, but there was never a moment that would require the fantasy of a typical child's cartoon (and certain adult ones). That's what I love about it.

FX was the channel because they aired the show several times a day in one-hour blocks. And then today I was looking forward to the 1PM block, but when I checked the station, Spin City was on. I figured they probably bumped KotH to a later time, so I checked the schedule for the rest of the day. It wasn't there. And then I realized...

Adult Swim has taken it from me. I can no longer enjoy watching the FX reruns because I guess Cartoon Network owns the rights now. I find this rather upsetting because I've disliked Adult Swim, and Cartoon Network, for awhile now for several reasons I've probably brought up before (live-action, Family Guy, etc.). They've gone downhill during the past few years and I've been avoiding the entire channel since. Even my love for KotH won't make me flip to that station.

I'm adding the DVDs to my Amazon wishlist (I'd purchase them now but I can't really spend on entertainment right now). It's about time I showed some support to Mike Judge & crew by purchasing them.

Overall this has put me into a depressed mood. :\

~~I'm almost done with the card image (procrastinated a bit XD), but the sign-up is now officially open. Please read on for info.~~

I'm having personal issues with the picture and I don't want to send you guys a crappy image. :X So the sign-up deadline has been extended to Wednesday.

For those just tuning in: this year, as a gift from *Busiris and I, we will be mailing out Christmas cards. Each card is a printed Christmas-themed artwork by me (size is roughly 4" x 6"), with a little handwritten holiday greeting by the both of us addressed to the recipient.

Sign-Up
If you would like a card, send the following information to =neekko in a NOTE:
First/Last Name:
Address:
Dedication: (i.e. "To Bob"--let me know who you want the card to be signed to; can be your real name, username, etc.!)
Kids! If your parents are the paranoid type, please ask permission or let them know that you are going to receive a card from us before signing up so they don't freak out over you receiving mail from strangers.

Sign-up closes Wednesday, Dec. 10 @ 6:00pm EST/GMT -5.
We won't be printing out the cards until we get an exact number of participants! Cards will be sent out on Tuesday and, depending on where you live, it will take a few days to a week or so to arrive.

If you have any questions, include them in the Note or post them below.

PS: If anyone wants to send us a card back, just ask in a Note as well so I may provide you with the info.

I Googled a bit of the problem, but I still don't know what's wrong (there are seriously only two sites that show up when the file below is searched). All I learned is that the file mentioned in the error message is a trojan and that it is missing(???).

~~HALP?~~

I know it's stupid to wonder why a trojan doesn't exist on my PC, but then why is that error message always popping up when I turn it on? But it doesn't affect my work on the computer, thankfully (at least, I don't think it is...).

Help would be appreciated. Feel free to poke me on AIM at NarGoesRawr for a faster response. No "USE A MAC" or "LOLVISTA" bullshit, thanks. :\

AVG couldn't detect it, but after I ran the software =DeMaulwurfn recommended and then rebooted my computer, the error didn't pop up. YAY!

Uuuuuh, I'll get to them all... eventually. ._.

Awhile ago I realized that Zazzle owes me money for October sales, so I'm looking at that for funding my Christmas card event. I'm working on the card image right now and will be posting the sign-up journal sometime this week.

The job hunting is still on! I finally managed to contact my career counselor today (she'd been away for two or more weeks on a business trip) and hopefully the school branch in this city will be able to provide me with something. I do hope it's just the failing economy (thanks for sucking the day before graduation) and not my lack of skill that's responsible for my not having one by now. >_>

Not that I think my art is horrible, but I have this urge to re-sketch everyone's unfinished commissions/art trades after looking through them today. It was August or September when I last worked on any of them and I want to start fresh (I'm the type to work on an image non-stop until it's completed or else I'll get sick of looking at it).

The hardest thing to nab is the pose, it seems. I don't want to present any generic standing, portrait, or my famous 3/4 view poses. :< My goal is to get all the art I owe into the sketch stage by the end of this year (30 days to go, whoooo...). Thanks for being patient, dudes.

This weekend I also realized that I left all my art books and manuals back in Hawaii. Grr!

This has got to be the most amusing King of the Hill episode ever. "Pec Nectar". CB

I've always wanted to do this. Dunno if I'm even going to do it this year because I need to spend as little as possible while job hunting, but I want to know your opinions anyway...

Who's interested in a Christmas/holiday card from me? Each card will be a signed print of holiday-themed art (yet to be determined) and will be sent to you via post. Also, how many of you do not celebrate Christmas, but are interested in receiving a holiday card from me anyway? It's free to sign up, so don't worry about money (unless you really want to pay for postage, then that's cool too XD).

More details will come later. If there is enough interest and if I do decide to go with the plan, I will post another journal for the mailing list sign-up.

For people who draw... don't you hate it when you've drawn something out in a picture, then suddenly realize it is irrelevant/too big/too small/etc., but don't have the heart to erase it because it just looks too damn good? What do you do in a situation like that? :\
