This decision has nothing to do with you in person. I still might do it if I feel like it, but dont expect it.

Reason:

Clicking the fav button - or that collection thingie - is similar to stating "I do like this work". Well, that's cool. It gives me some feedback and I appreciate the fav. But it is just a click and a total no-brainer. If there was a "Thank-You" button, I'd click it in return. But there is no such thing.

But from now on, unless you take the time to elaborate on why you like this specific work of mine, dont expect me to take the time to say thank you for it. Talk to me and I talk to you. Otherwise, you can simply assume, that I do appreciate the click and that's it.

You probably have your reasons for not taking the time to further comment on the work. Just to make it clear: this is a joke!

I guess everybody knows the mindless favers who just fav things because its from popular people. and i guess everyone has received one comment that simply says that your work or maybe even you is great, but not why. lets face it: constructive commenting is rare on dA (which is why us germans have a group that encourages it (*realcritique).

Well, after being frustrated with dA yesterday and after getting just another fav without a comment, I had this funky idea to have a automated commenting and faving system for all these mindless people here. Now, a day later, i am quite amazed at how many ppl actually believe this was a serious suggestion.

... yup, I'm talking about dA.
To say it with B.B. King "The thrill is gone" and I might wanna add "for a long time now".

I cannot remember when was the last time I spent time to discover new artists. I got 6003 deviations waiting in my message center. I rarely bother to look at them and if I do, it is because I like the ppl who posted.

Same goes for the groups I'm in. I dont care anymore. Forums? After 4 years they get incredibly repetitious. So why am I still here? Answer is, I dunno.

When i joined dA in Jan 04, I was excited to showcase my .. yes.. lets call it art .. given the trash galleries that was, are and will ever be on dA. I dont think my stuff is anywhere near the few top-notch artists dA does have, but I'd also like to think my stuff got better with time.

But apparently no one is interested in anything but "Coffee Love" and "Sushi" and that is a bit frustrating, especially since those faving those dont comment on it. Instead they copy it to photobucket, myspace and their silly blogs, like it was free stock. I'm not even mentioning the torrent and the wallpaper sites Coffee Love is in/on without proper attribution.

Well, I never expected to become famous here, but then again, I expected something. I dunno what exactly, but its prolly along the lines of having more responses than 829 - half of which i did myself by saying thank you - comments in 4 years. After all, this is the supposedly biggest art site on the web.
And its along the lines of not having my better and more tedious work get ignored, while a spontaneous oh-so-cute shot of a powder heart I learned to loathe is spread through the web by stupid kids incapable of at least attributing me properly.
And its along the lines of being in a nice place, a social community instead of being with mute people, clueless teenagers and the green diseased company that dA has turned into.

Well.. to get this to an end.. Im fed up with this place. It didnt live up to my expectations and so I might as well leave here soon.

While this works fine on each and every site on the web - no ads to be seen - dA has decided to wrap its ads into large chunks of styled html, effectively keeping the space reserved for the ad intact - just instead of the ad I see a replacement image. Now this reserved space in the gallery is HUGE and ANNOYING. I do understand that dA needs to make money off this site, but hey.. littering the site with ad casts is not the way to go.. especially if they are not degrading gracefully and hurt the user experience like they do! it is eye vomit! take it off!

surprise, surprise.
apparently some of my work is used by people on the internet.

guess what.. thats fine. unlike the copyright fanatics in the ripping forum, i am very easy going about art "theft", recognizing that in most cases, it is just peoples desire to pass on what somehow appeals to them. it doesnt hurt anyone to have my work in some blog post and tbh, i appreciate if ppl like my work enough to share it.

this is why i submit most of my work under a creative commons license. i did that long before deviant art considered including CCs for deviations (in fact, i even suggested it once or twice but got turned down).

so, usually this means you can use my work as long as you attribute me and do not use the image commercially (if you do Ill sue you). furthermore, if ppl ask nicely, i even very rarely mind if someone uses even those images that are not licensed under a CC. thats generous, isnt it?

however, it angers me when those very little things I ask for are not met. not only is it disrespectful, but its also taking away my time. i dont want to track you down and write an email to you. i dont even want to write a journal for it.

so for all you ppl that want to use my work:

1. Read the license attached to the deviation, stick to it and you are all set!
2. If its not a CC license, contact me and ask if you can use the image.

easy as that.

After having seen Death Proof a few weeks ago I went to see Planet Terror today. Both movies are shown as double feature complete with fake trailers in the US. but in germany, they are shown as separate movies with only one fake trailer at the beginning of Planet Terror. Well, what can i say about them? As much as I liked Death Proof, as much did I dislike Planet Terror. Im actually happy I didnt see them in a double feature now.

The story of both movies is shallow to non-existent, with Death Proof obsoleting the stories of all but one character in the first half through their deaths. That came as a surprise, but it didnt make the movie less enjoyable. In fact, I found it hilariously funny. The scene is a total jaw dropper. The second half of the movie is more or less the same than the first half, just now the new female characters take the upper hand.

Death Proof is violent and bloody, fast cars and whisky, tits and asses... the sound of the cars is pure purrrrr.. and dont expect meaningful dialogues... but all that comes packaged and polished with a good sense of self-irony and it just got the "tough-and-cool" attitude right.

Planet Terror on the other hand, is first and foremost a splatter flick with zombies (tho they are not zombies in the undead sense). It is fully loaded with action too and there are many elements in it that are totally absurd and comic-esque. all of that looks good and expectedly disgusting. but it wasnt humorous or cool. where deathproof managed to get it right, planet terror failed, despite the enjoyable cast and the very well done special fx. i wouldnt call planet terror a bad movie, but i also wouldnt call it entertaining.

my main issue with planet terror - or for the matter of fact any zombie splatter flick (with the notable exception of braindead) - is probably the lack of sufficient gore. you read right: lack.
in deathproof, gore is used scarcely and when its used, it will make you go OMG.. that is sufficient.. it is quality. But in Planet Terror, gore is a key element and you will get used to it very quickly. after 15 minutes you wont have any OMG moments anymore, leaving you with no story, nor well developed characters.. just endless slaughtering of zombies with lots of different weapons. and that is just plain boring, even if its done with a railgun mounted on a leg stump of an otherwise hot chick.

so, thumbs up for deathproof but yawn for planet terror. i guess, once youve seen the guy from braindead wading through a sea of blood and guts with a lawnmower strapped in front of him, splattering his way through an undead zombie horde with blood pumped at five gallons per second to rescue his love from the clutches of his very own mother that turned into a naked 20 foot zombie with saggy boobs, there isnt much to get from the zombie genre anymore.

im a bit late on this... but only cuz i rarely bother with any 'improvements' dA has to offer... well, there is [link]

so, the management noticed that video sites are all the rage, so now dA gets the youtube treatment. and of course, they do it for us.. the artists. right now, that section isnt filled with too much stuff and that what is in there looks ok.. now..

it will be interesting to see how dA will prevent people from uploading their random cellphone crap and copyrighted material like music videos, anime clips and the likes. and it will be fun to see their outcries, when the first "artistic nude" videos appear. horray for boobies and schlongs!

and to quote [link]
"Music and movie creation is a recognized and respected artform. However, due to the nature of how our site runs, and the requirements and legal issues surrounding the hosting of music and movies, we do not have plans to add either to the list of currently submitable artwork."

given that any requests for an audio section on dA have always been turned down with that reason that dA is a graphic arts site and for the reasons quoted above, i am very curious how they will argue against a music section now.

DA already has quite a bunch of pretty good pictures of the usual sightseeing suspects/objects. someone even did the exact same pic of st. pauls cathedral ceiling than i did. and i thought i was original with it. bleh.
so, i didnt even bother to put up my pics of big ben and house of parliament. there is way too many better shots of those online already. no one needs just another pic of the clock. or the next wideangle full frontal.
well.. to cut a long story short, i will try to upload only those pics that havent been overdone or that i like too much to be hidden.

Quite interesting read. It seems the CIA decided to finally clean out is closet and give insight to their actions 30 years ago. I got this links via the well renowned german news magazine Der Spiegel.

Apparently, the CIA did a lot of illicit things in the past, ranging from illegal wiretapping, drug testing on citizens, surveillance of journalists, data collecting about students in the anti-war movement of the time, etc.. to full blown assassination attempts of foreign country leaders - with the help of the mafia.

Full report (english):
http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB222/index.htm

Anyone still in doubt that being against more surveillance rights is silly? If they did this much 30 years ago, imagine what they can and prolly do today. there is no reason to believe that any secret service in the world does different.

well.. im sure i wont set foot into a a cinemaxx multiplex again.

I was at the zoo in Duisburg today.

Going to a zoo was something I wanted to do again since 1999. Ive been to some animals parks during this time, but not a real zoo. Well, what can i say.. it was cool. The zoo in Duisburg got a frigging lot of animals.. and i had enough opportunity to test my new eos 400d. I did 488 pictures, some of which you can see in my gallery now.

It really was a fun day, with tigers, lions, dolphins, koala bears, apes, penguins, elephants etc etc... let me tell ya, some animals really look totally weird. marabous for instance are ugly as hell. and some turtles have faces where you think god must have been on drugs when he created them but i like all of them no matter what. its so fascinating to see all these facets of life.

i had to put two images in scraps cuz they didnt turn out as good as i wanted them, but im quite happy with most of the pics of today. check out the lemur. he is so funny

on the other hand, zoos make you wonder.. is a zoo a good or bad thing? the animals are held in captivity so i can pay to see them, so its kinda like animal prison? or is it actually good for them, cuz they got all the food they need, medical attention and dont get killed in the wild by whatever? most of the animals looked quite happy, but then again im not all too good at reading animal faces...

well anyway.. check my gallery and scraps!
cheers!

all i want is a little checkbox where i can say: include your id in recent deviations
Delightful shows btw. But this is albums picks and both havent released anything this year. Since I am not sure if I like the new CoF Release Thornography I got only two picks. Here is the winners:

1. Johnny Cash - A hundred Highways
Easily the best album for 2006 for me and already at a top spot of my all time favorite list. The album is the perfect requiem for Mr. Cash. Its dark, its touching, its silent but captivating.. its simply brilliant and its awesome. If you didnt listen to it yet, go get it. Once the strings kick in on Track 1 you are in.. im actually listening to it while im writing this.

2. Gwar - Beyond Hell
Finally a good release from your favorite Shock-Rock-Satire-Metal-Monsters-from-Outer Space. I really disliked the last two releases. They sounded generic and all-too uninspired to me and had no highlights. But the new album ROCKS! all those songs are catchy and Mr. Urungus voice is defo at its best. Its brutal! Its gross! Its silly! Its GWAR!

Cheers!

Two things:

1. Im going nuts here. Renovators in this house and the house next to this house. At 6 I can hear ppl footsteps everywhere. At 7 the workers start to drill and hammer. Goes on til late afternoon. Six days a week. I havent slept properly for three weeks now. And on sundays fucking Lena keeps doing hobby hammering. How inconsiderate can someone be? I know she complained when the workers started to hammer the first time on Saturday at 7 in the morning.. and the next day she does the same.. omg.. do ppl ever think?

2. California apparently passed a law that makes sexual offenders wear GPS tracking systems for the rest of their lifes. The article I read said there is about 100.000 sexual offenders in California. Thats one hell of a lot if you ask me, but since kids get trialed for kissing other kids cheek there, its no wonder. Sexual offenders are also not allowed to live in the vicinity of schools anymore. This is in addition to the already in-use listing on public website that showcases names and adresses of trialed sexual offenders. Well, America, Land of the free, huh?
I mean, come on.. that is so expensive and ineffective. Should have asked us germans. Just put all your sexual offenders in a ghetto and let them wear an armlet... or better yet, tattoo the letters SO on their forehead. Or both... Tell your kids to stay away from the ghetto and those ppl then. Way cheaper. And if the ghetto gets too full .. ah.. just look at history books...

so dA claimed this will be THE big new thing. the revolution in art viewing. hmm.. then where is it now? didnt they say they bring back devPacks? didnt they want to improve on showing less know artists art? where is all that? didnt the community ask for a radical change on the frontpage? where is all that? dA is running on some more ajax now, true.. but ajax is nothing too fancy anymore nowadays. its nice i can enlarge an image without reloading the page. but is that all? where is the revolution proclaimed? is it the mood icons? what a meaningful addition. what about all the things betatested on v4? no see anywhere.

v5 looks and feels like soup to me. i really dislike the new color scheme. it lacks contrast and you have to search for navigation elementes all over the place. a button here, a link there.. some stuff has been cleaned up though, but its not enough. oh and did i mention the design looks like soup? i know some people claim less contrast is good cuz it doesnt distract from viewing "the art" but i am clearly not viewing art alone on the site. i am using my journal, comments, forum, e.g. i am doing textbased things. before v5 i was using the forums on a daily basis. since v5 i went there only once. its simply a bad experience now.

on top of that there is a quite a number of bugs that lead me to the conclusion that v5 is a rushed release. looks like the administration just wanted to show "something" for dAs bday. i mean just look at all the pages that are still in the v4 theme.

Important Service Announcement:

----------

Now on to the the main reason for this journal!

I got the new Johnny Cash album "American Recordings V - A Hundred Highways". Now that I listened to it like 5o times in a row, i find the time to write about it! To put it simple: its A-W-E-S-O-M E ! ! ! !

Cash sang in the vocals after his wife June passed away and shortly before his own death. He never got to hear the final product, but producer Rick Rubin did a fantastic job at overdubbing the music using very supporting and respectful arrangements with the vocals. This is a very captivating and intense album, albeit a short one. You can clearly hear Cashs old age on some tracks, when his voice sounds very fragile but it only adds to the albums almost intimate atmosphere.

The tracks on the album are the usual mix of covers and two new songs written by Cash. All songs are dealing with what we have been presented on the first four installments of the American Recording series. Though this one has a much stronger emphasis on love and death themes.

What makes this album so special is that you get this feeling Cash is not just singing some songs but it is Cash sharing words of wisdom. As if he knew life would come to an end soon. Its his version of My Way. His very own sung Requiem. When Cash sings "Lord, Help me to walk / Another mile, just one more mile; / I'm tired of walkin' all alone." on the opening track you know he means it. You cannot do but sit in silence and listen to what follows. Cash takes you on a retrospect about his life. About how he found God, about his womanizing days, about broken relationships and about June, his wife. When you hear Cash sing the utterly kitschy "Rose of my Heart" you cannot be but touched to tears, cuz you know he means every single word. When is the last time you heard someone Cashs age sing a love song for his wife?
And then, there is death again. Songs like "Like the 309", where Cash sings about himself wanting his casket to be taken away in a train. Or Cash singing about the afterlife "Further Up on the Road" ahead. Consequently, when the final track closes and the last chord fades into silence you feel like he really is gone. As if he died strumming his guitar while he was telling you the story of his life...

Brilliant and emotionally intense album!
A very worthy final chapter and already a top spot in my all-time-favorites list of albums.
Perhaps it will be as a photojournalist, perhaps as a researcher – maybe simply as an artist trying to capture the beauty around me...photography has become my one true passion – I can’t put the camera down, and I can’t stop flipping through books, magazine articles, collections etc. It truly is addictive, and it changes the way I view the world around me."

My italian uncle died, age 58, due to a second infarction.
I liked him well. He was kinda crazy. He was president of a Harly Davidson club and looked like it LOL.
Didnt see him all too often, cuz of the distance. My thoughts are with his family right now.

Actually, there is two reasons why I am writing about this. One is, that this is the second person to die early from cardiac incarction in my family. My grandpa died from it at age 61. Guess, I should get to a doctor to check on my heart. Maybe its inherited.

The other reason, and much more important, is that I noticed how I am certain, that I will see my uncle again in the afterlife. That is actually a paradox, cuz I never was much of a believer. Im pretty sure, that when you die, you die... and thats it. But then again, I like to think, that I will see everyone that passed before me again when I die.. dunno how to explain that.. but its a a very comforting thought.

And until that.. I remember those who died.. in my heart and mind they live on..
doh.. that was kinda sentimental..

Important Service Announcement:
[link] The Last Unicorn
[link] Fox and the Hound (Cap&Capper)
Ultraman (dunno which one that was)

so, yeah, i saw V for Vendetta today and im amazed by it. its glorious. its brilliant. a beautiful hymn to freedom. i almost starting crying in the end because i was so touched during the unmasking scene.

in addition to further my belief in freedom and preaching against the slow but continual erosion of civil rights and privacy, the movie also delighted me visually. the whole dark atmosphere was very fitting for the (not so) utopian theme and the action scenes were well choreographed too. the climatic battle is really breath-taking. natalie portman looks great with and without hair and i really enjoyed all actors acting.

the origins of the V guy is a little bit off, but the movie is based on a comic, so I can live with it easily. and also i didnt spot any grave illogical things like i had to endure in Saw. well well... if you havent seen V for Vendetta, this is defo a must-see.

Important Service Announcement:

OMFG!!! I finally found some more songs of Mary Born!!!

For those of you who dont know her: she is the singer of the song Stay from the Chasing Amy movie. I never understood why her band Coal didnt release any records. Stay is one of my favorite songs ever. It is so incredibly 90s-alternative-cigarettes-and-alcohol-heartbreak-i-am-so-hurt-but-i-need-you that you cant but love it - seriously.

I have looked all over the web for so long and often now, but never found anything about her or her former band Coal from L.A. - until today! Today I found [link] :woot: and although none of the songs there are as good as Stay (which you can listen on that site too) I kinda like the music. Less alternative, more Pop and slightly country Id say.. you can compare it to Hush.

Well.. happy me

Important Service Announcement:

borrowed Saw 1 on DVD. what a dumb movie.

the basic plot idea is nice and i admit that during the first half i was actually enjoying the movie. but then the logic chain went down the drain. remember, when the cops go to the killers hideout? what a bunch of idiots but all characters did so incredibly non-plausible things. and it only gets worse now that i know who the killer is. so annoying.. there is just so many illogical things in this movie...

another nice movie.

though the story is rather trivial, the visuals are nice. very colorful sets and some astonishing scenes with indoor and outdoor architecture and landscapes. zhang ziyi, li gong and michelle yeoh do good acting plus they all look soooooo pretty.

the only negative thing was the stupid fucks who kept talking during the movie. they wouldnt stop besides two "shhhh"s and very audible "go home if you want to talk". i complained with the staff after the movie. this is seriously getting more and more annoying with each cinema visit.

so, if you dont know what to watch next time you are in the cinema. this one is a good choice.

Important Service Announcement:
