Admittedly it's just the chapter heading (with a lovely picture of Kitty), but from here on we're aiming to have regular Monday-Wednesday-Friday updates. Check it out! Tell your friends!

I'm also participating in NaNoWriMo again this year ([link]), and bending the rules a little to take a stab at finally finishing UFO Girl. So far it's going pretty well, but I need to step up my writing a bit to keep up.

It's really crazy and scary and exciting and stuff, but my old webcomic is coming back. Seriously. My very talented friend was thinking about doing some kind of webcomic, and I'd been wanting to resurrect and reinvent Neko Machi for a while. I've got a new website set up, at the same URL ([link]), though it's going to take a little time to get everything fully set up. (WordPress with ComicPress is very awesome and powerful, but certain things require you to get kind of advanced.)

The new version is going to be about Kitty and company starting community college, and we're aiming for a Monday-Wednesday-Friday release schedule, starting relatively soon.

Many thanks to all the people who've enjoyed and supported Neko Machi over the years, and even more to dear piggy for taking up this project! ^___^

Edited To Add: I've been working more on writing and planning, and talking to piggy about various things. She's going to start posting actual comics on the site around the end of October. So, Happy Nekoween!

After a lengthy drought, I've suddenly become very inspired to work on actual prose stories, and as you've likely seen, both the long-overdue rewrite of Being a Real Catgirl and the first draft of Dandelion (the latter dedicated to came together with surprising ease over the past couple days. Hopefully more will be coming.

Also, when I was getting started on doing my RPG podcast I decided to make audio recordings of some of my weird short stories. I've now started up a podcast (Is there anything Wordpress can't do? Don't answer that.), called Trapped Inside the Dream Forever. For the time being it'll be updating on Fridays, though it'll get very, very irregular once I've recorded and posted all of the stories I think are worth recording and posting.

I keep wanting to start off journal entries by saying stuff like "Things have been weird." I quit my crappy part-time job to focus on freelance work and try to de-stress, but I haven't been getting anywhere near as much stuff done as I'd like. I got caught up in working on the Slime Story RPG for a while, but I wound up taking a break from that.

I'm starting to get inspired to work on writing stuff, though it's been hard to get any kind of momentum going. I've especially been wanting to work more on Nekomimi Land and UFO Girl, both stories that have a lot of personal significance for me. I think I've become a better writer since I last worked on either one, and I've got a lot of ideas for where to go with both of them.

For Nekomimi Land, I'm planning to take some time to develop what happens to Kaylee between when she becomes a catgirl and when the winds up in Nekomimi Land. I think there are a lot of opportunities to explore how the transformation has affected her. I'm also planning to do some more stuff with her interactions with the other catgirls, since that will help me develop pretty much everything a little more. I'm going to add a whole other sub-plot about Kaylee and a catgirl shrine maiden named Kagami, and some more stuff with Yui. Also also, I read up a bit on the behavior and body language of real cats, and that's given me some neat ideas for things to include.

nothingsp's little catgirl TF comic (1 2 3) led me to some very important insights about Kaylee's character, though she's very different from his protagonist. I don't want to get too much into it here, but her real problem isn't having femininity thrust on her. Being masculine didn't make her happy per se either.

As for UFO Girl, the major new thing I came up with is that Janet has these visions of a City of the Future, a glittering, idyllic city of pristine skyscrapers. She doesn't understand it herself, but this vision of a better world is what drives her to oppose the antagonist who wants to destroy the world. Also, the first chapter especially is old enough that I can just plain write better prose now.

Anyway, I will hopefully be posting up some snippets of these as I make more progress on them. Stay tuned!

Also, I've got some Kurumi commissions on the way. The other day I got a sketch of Kurumi from Rosemary Travale, as she's offering sketches for a small donation to help the Sheridan College's For The Love of Print project.

I got some neat art books and a Kurumi commission from Justin Ridge. If I go to Comic-Con again it won't be for all 4 days, I think, especially if they keep having more and more Hollywood/mass media crap overshadowing the actual comics and such. OTOH I absolutely want to go to APE in November.

About the only panel I saw was the Doctor Who/Torchwood panel. Julie Gardner said that a DW/TW manga was unlikely. I wanted to point out that DW is shown on NHK, and that there's this thing called doujinshi, but so far searching on Google all I could turn up was this. I'll have to look some more when I have time.

I wound up starting working on a follow-up to Slime Story: Graduation, tentatively titled "Slime Story: Saying Yes." It's about Doug having a crush on a weird girl who works at Monster Mart, and it's proving to be a pleasantly unpredictable story to work on. I want to write another Slime Story short story after that, with sex in it.

I've decided to re-write it as an expanded prose story. I'm going to change and add some things, but I definitely want to keep the humor and charm of the original, and then some. The major change is that I'm making most of the characters American (with a few exceptions, like Civiko), mainly because when I originally wrote it I didn't know as much about the Japanese school system, and there are certain very basic things (like the protagonist buying a car to commute to college) that work much better that way.

I own Wii Fit. It's fun, and it's getting me to exercise a bit for a change.

The new edition of D&D is out. Me and my friends are going to play, so I bought the Player's Handbook the other day. My character is a half-elf fighter.

I've been reading the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, partly because the local library has all of what's out in English, and partly because it's so damn good. I think I'm almost to the part where the manga had cut off when they started planning the anime.

I finally got the second chapter of UFO Girl posted up. It probably still needs some work, but it does the job.

I got all inspired to work in it because I went to see a live RiffTrax performance of Plan 9 From Outer Space. Now I need to find more cheesy sci-fi stuff to watch for ideas. Any recommendations? I finally got around to watching The Day The Earth Stood Still (which was a great film all around BTW), so I'm looking for more.

I may have mentioned here before, but although I originally conceived of UFO Girl as a single novel, the moment I started thinking about sequels I wound up having tons of ideas. If it were to become a series, the first one would be called "UFO Girl and The End of the World", to be followed by "UFO Girl vs. Vampire Boy". After that, either "UFO Girl on Planet Me" (where Janet wakes up on a planet populated entirely by clones of herself), or "UFO Girl in Giant Monsters All-Out Rumble" (where Janet becomes friends with a kaijuu).

Since I'm actually getting some stuff done, I thought I'd go ahead and post about it here.

I'm currently working on a short story about Rita called "Slime Story: Graduation." A good friend of mine is collaborating with Mori on an anthology thingy, and the story (with some illustrations) is going to be my main contribution. Although I'm sure most everyone who's actually reading this would like to read the story, I haven't yet decided whether to post it up here. At the very least I'll be letting you guys know how to get the anthology.

I've also started working on another short story, though it's still embryonic to the point where I don't have a title or anything yet. That probably will be posted up here, along with drawings of the main character, whenever I decide it's ready. I've also wound up working a lot on a tabletop RPG called Catgirl: The Storytelling Game. It was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek parody of the World of Darkness, but it's been trying to turn into this weird mashup of Neil Gaiman, otaku culture, and Night Watch (so far). I wasn't planning to actually write any of the zillions of sourcebooks implied by the rulebook, but I'm sorely tempted to make Shinigami: The Storytelling Game a reality. Anyway, more info about that is on my RPG blog. I may try my hand at writing some fiction based on the game's setting too...

There are relatively few artists that make plushies, and even fewer who do good ones on commission. That's why I was delighted to stumble across Squisherific's gallery (while searching for Stephen Colbert stuff). Not only does she use the right materials (UFO catcher dolls use robe velour for the skin, which seems to be pretty hard to find), but the results are very detailed and generally awesome. Hence my next piece of custom Kurumi-ness is going to be a plush doll made by her.

GenCon was fun, if utterly exhausting. I came back with entirely too many RPG books, and feeling inspired about gaming in general. Although I'm finally working on some actual story writing now too, RPG projects have been distracting the hell out of me too.

So, if you like my stuff, I'd be deeply grateful if you'd take a look at the playtest version of my current game project: Raspberry Heaven, even if you're not into RPGs. It's meant to be at least somewhat accessible to people who don't know RPGs, and on top of that the perspectives of people who haven't been playing other games forever can sometimes be interesting and fresh.

I think I enjoyed it more last time, but then I wasn't worrying about money nearly as much last time too.

Anyway, here's what I got:

Girls and Monsters; a sketchbook by Ben Seto.

Klaw Berry; a full-color storybook about a monster girl's quest to get back her stolen eye.

Gashapon Shop zine; a sampling of a comic about geeky randomness.

Snowball in Hell; the first two chapters of a cute comic about a kitty that winds up in hell.

Two sketchbooks ("The Fallen" and "Burn") by Camilla d.Errico, who is looking to become another of my favorite artists.

Side Scrollers by Matt Loux, an incredibly fun romp, kind of in the same vein as Scott Pilgrim, about some teenaged guys messing around.

Peng, which looked neat but I haven't read just yet,

It's been much too long since I did much of anything with DA. I keep getting caught up in working on role-playing games, for one thing. On the other hand the near-spring weather has me feeling invigorated, and I'm really, really wanting to write stuff lately. Hopefully I'll finally be ready to send out submission packets for Nekomimi Land soonish too.

I just finished re-doing Windows on my computer earlier today. My main desktop's install of XP was a little wonky before (WinAmp never worked right for one thing), so now everything's running better than before. I also added Jabber/Gtalk (nekoewen AT gmail DOT com) to my too-extensive collection of IM stuff running through Trillian (see my profile). Feel free to message me some time; I've been bored a lot lately, and I won't feel so dumb for tying up like 10 megs of RAM all the time.

This year I'm planning to go to two conventions (plus hitting up APE for a day): FanimeCon (where hopefully I'll finally see porku and TheSax in person...) and GenCon Indy (where hopefully I'll meet some of my gaming online acquaintances as well). I think between those I'll be getting more than enough con in my life for 2007.

Wow. It's been like two months since I did a journal entry here, and even longer since I submitted anything. As has become typical, my brain has been going into Vacation Mode prematurely, which means I've been more inclined to either be lazy or work on creative stuff than actually do the stuff I'm supposed to. I wound up filling up another notebook, and hence posting the random bits that looked interesting as a deviation. More importantly, I've made progress on two short stories that I'd been totally failing to write, so hopefully those will be coming along soon.

In the meantime, just when I thought I had finished my freelance work for the moment, a new project came along that is the most rushed I've had to contend with to date, and I still have some finals to contend with. The stress is getting to me a bit, so during those long train rides to and from school I have a hard time doing much of anything beside watching Keroro Gunsou until I feel a little bit better. (It usually works, temporarily at least). The only problem with the literary writing style is that I'm always at my most inspired when I feel bad. On the plus side, Christmas is really close and I'm actually looking forward to the festivities planned with friends and family, starting with a Christmas party on the 23rd. ^_^

Today my artist friend showed me his illustrations for Nekomimi Land, and I was blown away. He normally mainly does cartoon-style pinup art, so I wasn't sure how well it would work, but as usual he far exceeded my expectations. There's still some more work to do, but I'm just about ready to start submitting it for publication. Happy dance! More on that when there's more to tell.

On a whim, I went and saw This Film Is Not Yet Rated today. The MPAA is kind of scary, and evidently utterly opposed to any kind of transparency of process. And as an added bonus, filmmakers appealing a rating (since contrary to what Valenti says, an NC-17 is basically a death sentence as far as theatrical distribution is concerned) are specifically not allowed to cite other films as precedents, much less actually know the identities of the panel that's judging them (which turned out to be made up of movie industry executives, plus a catholic priest and an episcopal priest). I'm kind of glad I'm not into making movies, since it means I won't have to put up with this kind of crap.

On the other hand I've been drawing a lot more lately, as evidenced by the new pieces I finally scanned and uploaded this morning (including three scraps).

(And at some point I need to find an artist to commission to do the cover for Tokyo Heroes. My concept for it is IMHO neat but pretty elaborate).

I've also been trying to learn how to do page layouts in InDesign, which I'm finding to be powerful but not terribly intuitive. I'm also reading an incredibly good book on typography and layout called The Elements of Typographic Style, which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to do that kind of stuff.

More importantly, my first day of graduate school at SFSU is tomorrow. Which is kind of annoying since I don't meet with my advisor for the first time until the day after tomorrow. Argh. The good news is that the train ride is simple and relaxing.

I went to San Diego ComicCon this year for the first time. It was stressful and exceedingly tiring. I'm considering going next year, but on the condition that we do things very differently (more friends coming, *much* closer hotel, and probably fly instead of driving). I did a comic about it, and wrote a long LJ post with lots of grammatical errors.

The good that came out of it is that I picked up some really kickass stuff, and I got inspired to get back into doing actual creative stuff. Of course, I need to recover from the con, and I need for the heatwave to let up some. San Diego was hot and humid, and the whole time I was thinking that it'd be nicer back in San Jose (what with how it's like 500+ miles north), and I was SO wrong. I got back to my house at 10:30 at night, and the inside of the house was literally over 100 degrees. I have one room with AC in my house, and I had to lie on the floor of that room and wait for the temperature to drop below a boil to get any sleep.

The aforementioned LJ entry has a fuller accout of the loot I picked up. Still, I got some really awesome sketchbook thingies at the con. There's this certain drawing style that uses a particular kind of American cartooning to do really incredible pinup art, which I'm starting to fall in love with. I also came upon Jose Lopez' sketchbook Mariachi Samurai, which I find too cool for words (and I want to play the title character in an RPG some day!).

I attended a panel on translating manga (Surprise! I'm already qualified!) and one on writing for comics (which was overly geared towards superhero comics unfortunately). Still, I'm starting to think more seriously about writing scripts for comics. I have an idea for a mini-comic I want to do (starting Akiko no less), and I may post the script here. I'd also like to see a comic adaptation of Ignition (an anime-style story I did a few years ago) some day, though that would mean finding an artist who can draw cute bubbly girls, Initial D style car races, AND cool fighting scenes, and would be willing to do a fairly long comic. If I can find that holy grail of an artist made of god and win, how much adaptation I'd have to do from the original version (which is done up as though it were an animation script) would heavily depend on the preferences of the individual artist. I also need to think about some other shorter comic ideas.

I also got some inspiration for the "Very Tolkien" short story I'd been neglecting for ever, so hopefully I'll get that done some time this century. And I know I have some poems I want to write. ("We dream in color, light, and sound / We dream in Japanese.")

Lastly, I've been taking random pictures of random stuff with my camera, and I've started uploading them to Flickr.

Random Thought: There was that thing going around the net years ago about the "Top Ten Sexually Tilted Lines In Star Wars" ("Get in there! I don't care what you smell!", etc.). Someone really needs to do that for the dubbed Dragon Ball Z. There's some that are really obvious, like when Krillin says "I love Mr. Popo!" (I swear I am not making this up). Or when Vegeta sees Porunga and says, "Gosh! That's one whopper of a lizard!"

Yesterday I went to APE (the Alternative Press Expo) in San Francisco. It was pretty neat all around, though I mostly paid $7 to go around a big dealers room. The main difference is that more often than not you're buying stuff directly from the creators, so their eyes light up in a way you don't get from most purchases. I'm also sorta weird in that I'm never too concerned about getting anything signed, but I wound up with a lot of stuff signed because the creator was right there offering (and although I have antisocial tendencies, even I know it'd be pretty crass to refuse). But anyway.

There was all kinds of stuff there, and I wound up spending about $70 or so on various comics, and I still have some flyers and URLs to investigate. So far of the stuff I picked up my very favorite is Lost At Sea by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Same Difference and Other Stories by Derek Kirk Kim. Rob Ullman's mini-comic "That's Just Super" is just plain wonderful too (and it even got pimped on BoingBoing).

I also went to a panel called "Pitch," about submitting stuff to publishers. (They have one room for panels, with maybe six of them each day). It was mostly common sense and the same stuff I've been hearing about publishing prose, except the indie comics guys seldom have dedicated editors.

As one of the artists said, being there was very inspiring. For me that makes it that much more annoying that I'm buried under schoolwork (and really, I shouldn't be sitting here messing with internet stuff right now, but I need to do something to let my brain rev up some). I'm also starting to wonder if Otaku Dreams, the novel I'm working on that's mostly in planning stages right now, might work better as a graphic novel... But going down that path would require [1] Learning how to write decent scripts for comics (and I'd best practice with non-magnum opus type stuff first) and [2] Finding an artist (someone who unlike my existing artist friends wouldn't be busy with school, MMOs, or drawing teh pr0n). All stuff I don't have time for... Summer can't come soon enough.

Anyway, APE was a fun way to spend an afternoon, and I'll definitely consider going next year.

It's been a while since I really managed to get much creative stuffs done. That's partly because most of my classes this semester have been boring and mundane GE crap. During the weekend I never quite manage to get anything done, unless playing video games counts (I just got Dead Or Alive Ultimate in the mail! Yay!). Thankfully I at least got my laptop back from repairs, so I can do writing, net surfing, and anime watching during my many overly long breaks at school. I also need to get moving on applying for graduate school...

I somehow wound up starting in on the third draft of Nekomimi Land, beginning with mostly re-working the scene where Kaylee discovers Sarah's suicide. I think I waited long enough to get a semi-fresh perspective on the story, though it's sort of depressing to still be finding parts that desperately need revising. And as I said before, I'm kind of afraid of what'll happen if I try this process with a full-length novel.

Of course, part of why it takes so long is I keep getting distracted by other stuff. Right now I'm working on an RPG adaptation of Halo and a mini-campaign to run with my friends.

I can't be the only one who's leery of the lengthy submission agreement that pops up when you submit a deviation now, especially the parts about a "worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license." A certain portion of it is undoubtedly just to cover their asses, but it seems to go beyond that, to the point where I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't look into some alternative (it's not like I have any shortage of web space on Neko Machi...).

Anyway, school's been weird in that my classes are mostly extremely mundane and boring (but all absolutely necessary to graduate...), and my imagination is starting to really kick in. It helps that I've been looking at books on Salvador Dali (who was far weirder than The Persistence of Memory suggests), and that I recently watched Mirrormask (an acid trip of a movie, with Neil Gaiman as the main writer), and occasionally having weird dreams as a result. I think I'm going to get at least a short story out of all of it, if I can get my mojo going properly again.

Way too much going on... But in the midst of all the stuff I desperately need to get done for school (which is now kind of sort of starting to come together) I've got a lot of creative stuff going on. I have three short story ideas brewing (one a satirical spinoff of Nekomimi Land, one that delves into otaku grotesquerie, and a third that's a sort of experiment in surrealism). I think I've got a handle on the Italian sonnet I have to write for class, even though I don't think it'll be anything I'll be really satisfied with.

More importantly, after teasing everyone about it for months and months, I've decided I'm going to be posting the second draft of Nekomimi Land here on my DA account, partly because I don't want to leave everyone in suspense for however many eons it takes me to get it published, and partly so I can get some feedback. My artist friend did up a cover design (with more illustrations to follow for the final printed book) which you can check out here. I'm relatively close to getting it done, but I'm being distracted by another creative project too:

I think it was something like ten years ago now that I started working on a tabletop RPG called "Thrash," based on fighting games and martial arts anime. It was fun to play, but there are a lot of things about it that are just plain wonky, and I've been trying and failing miserably to write a second edition for the past four or so years. Now that I have a lot more experience with RPGs in general, and recently I had a couple of important breakthroughs in rapid succession. Suddenly I have the basics of the new system (which keeps some things but for the most part is a whole new beast), so I want to try to get that finished (ready for playtesting) by the end of the year. For both I have to survive through finals first, but for Thrash 2.0 (which will be a free PDF, though I may try to put out an inexpensive print version through lulu.com) I'll eventually be looking for illustrations (hint hint).

I'm almost caught up on the reading for my Ethnicity In American Literature class; I just need to get through the last two thirds of Victor Villasenor's Macho!. Kite Runner, despite being a little overhyped, was a great book, and an interesting look into Afghanistan. I also started reading Kafka's Metamorphosis, basically just for the hell of it. Although Kafka was German, I think they should've made him an honorary Russian.

I've been feeling soooo freaking lazy lately. And really, I need to be working hard at school stuff for the next month or so to get everything done on time. As usual, its taking me forever to get over this cold.

I really hope I can finish Nekomimi Land some day soon. The new stuff I'm working on adding is proving to be more extensive than I expected. Kotomi (the nurse) started out as a fairly flat antagonist, and she's evolved into a fairly deep character who is thrown into a crisis of faith over the course of the story. When she was young she was a devout believer like most catgirls, and when she became a nurse she saw behind the scenes, but stayed faithful because she was convinced it was all necessary for the greater good. In Kaylee she faces for the first time someone for whom everything that makes Nekomimi Land "work" is poisonous, and for the first time she encounters the idea that there is no god.

I still need to write three more poems (including an Italian sonnet) for my poetry class this semester, plus lots of creative nonfiction stuff, not to mention all that reading. The poem I'm working on now ("Cosplay") is, I think, turning out fairly well, though it's going to take a lot of work.

I've had a cold for the past few days, which is kind of a Bad Thing since I have lots of stuff to do for school, but the cold makes my head so fuzzy that I have a hard time reading a book without my eyes completely glazing over. Then I have to do a presentation on a modern Japanese poet, and a research paper about something to do with Ethnicity In American Literature (I'm thinking about looking into the influence of Latin American magical realism on Latino-American literature, but I have to see if there's actually enough research material out there). My poetry teacher also assigned a bunch of reading from his dry, wordy, intellectual book on personal portry, which I'm way behind on. I did at least finish up that GIANT translation job I've been doing over the past three weeks or so.

Naturally I haven't been doing much reading for myself lately, though when I heard about DramaCon I went out and bought it the next day and read it within a couple hours. I just can't gush about it enough, so I won't get started except to say that it's ten kinds of awesome, wrapped in bacon. Basically it's really well-done soap opera drama mixed with equally well-done comedy about a girl going to her first anime convention. ("TENTACLES!")

For some reason while I was totally failing to read books because of cold symptoms I did a lot of scribbling in my notebook -- I think I literally filled 14 pages over the weekend. As a result I finished a new poem (Saffron and Azrael) and got back into working on Nekomimi Land (some day I'll finish rewriting it...), especially for fixing up that one really weak chapter towards the end. I also got some Neko Machi stuff done, but since the scanner at home it out of whack I don't know when I'll be able to post it up.

I still need to fiddle with it some before I post it.

I'm finally actually writing some poetry again... All summer the closes I came was some vague ideas for a sonnet (tenatively titled "Beyond Otaku Dreams"). Today I posted "What Is Hell?" I'm working on another (which is going to take a little longer since it's metrical and all that jazz) called "Alien On My Head" (inspired by the anime/manga Alien Nine, which you should check out if you haven't already).

For my Ethnicity In American Literature class I just finished reading a novel called "Comfort Woman" by Nora Okja Keller. As the title suggest, it deals a lot with a former Juugun Ianfu (the girls taken as sex slaves by the Japanese government in WWII). Akiko, however, is haunted by spirits, and her daughter, growing up in Hawaii, tries to cope with being between two worlds and having a mother that most people are sure is batshit crazy. The end result is something really compelling, that deals not only with the "comfort woman" horror, but with clashing cultures, the meaning of womanhood, coming of age, responsibility, etc. All in all it was a really good book, and I'm thinking of reading the author's follow-up, Fox Girl, when I have the time. I also got some more ideas for Nekomimi Land...

Let's see... My carpal tunnel situation is a lot better, though I'm still not cured yet or anything. But I can at least write or type for more than a few minutes without falling on the floor writhing in agony (exaggeration). I finished the first draft of Nekomimi Land and started on the second, which is shaping up to involve a whole lot of work; there are a total of four chapters that I'm going to be doing massive revisions with, plus I managed to get a much better handle on Kotomi's character, necessitating certain changes in the scenes where she shows up. Writing with speech recognition is kind of a pain, frankly, if only because when it comes to generating prose I tend to think at about the same pace as I type, which isn't quite right for voice recognition, so I'll probably get much more writing done when I can do it all by hand again.

Anyway, the original Nekomimi short story mutated into the first two chapters of Nekomimi Land, but those are one of the parts I'm mostly rewriting (as it is right now you can really feel the 90-degree turn between the part that was a short story and the rest), so I updated the Deviation post with the new revisions.

I'll probably be posting more creative nonfiction stuff soon too, considering I have to turn in a couple of pieces on Wednesday.

So, the semester has definitely started. My right wrist has been hurting a bit lately, so I’ve been using Microsoft Office’s voice but recognition feature it lieu of typing (so there’s a good chance in a weird errors in this are because of that). It can be a bit aggravating to use, and in that to change slightly of the thought process I use to type, but overall I’m happy with the results. Of course, the condition of my voice makes a difference in how accurately its transcribes things, like right now my throat is exceptionally dry (like usual for the early morning), so it has a hard time recognizing what I’m saying, And I keep having to turn the microphone off so I can have a fit of coughing. I’m also trying to learn some shorthand for when I’m not in front of my computer.

The so this semester I’m taking both poetry and nonfiction writing classes, which means I’ll have plenty of stuff to post up here. On the other hand and going to have insane amounts of reading to do once again. The creative nonfiction writing teacher assigned a 300 page book as a textbook for the class, and on the first day she told us that we had to read it by next week. I still have a hundred pages so to go by this afternoon

I think I’ve decided that with poetry I have so many other forms of expression available to me that I don’t want to bother with poems unless there’s something lyrical about them – unless they actually feel like "poems." But who knows if will be able to pull that off.

Haven't updated my DA journal in a while (though I keep posting relentlessly on LJ like usual). I'm still not quite done with Nekomimi Land, and I haven't actually worked on it at all in the past few days. I've now got *two* ideas for novels I want to do after (the aforementioned Akihabara Love Story and another called Otaku Twilight), and all that in addition to school starting up again. I'm taking Writing Poetry, Modern Japanese Drama and Lyric, Technology and Civilization (advanced GE), and Ethnicity in American Literature (ditto).

I'm also thinking of trying to take the Writing Nonfiction class -- it's full but I might be able to add. Like the Writing Fiction class it seems to be a little misleadingly named. "Writing Fiction" should be "Writing Literary Short Fiction" and "Writing Nonfiction" should be "Writing Creative Nonfiction," which is a genre that's actually less widely known than poetry. In high school I really dreaded doing any kind of autobiographical writing assignment, but I think through fiction and poetry I've figured out how to articulate the nature and meaning of my existence in writing, even if there isn't a whole lot that acually happens. "Write what you know" can be really frustrating to anyone who wants to write speculative fiction. "Know what you write" (i.e., do the research, talk to people, etc.) is a bit better, but I'd say "Write what you are." You can write about anything and still draw on personal experience to create something worthwhile.

I'm also getting more interested in developing/writing RPGs again... Dunno how that's gonna turn out, but it can be ludicrously time-consuming at times.

One definite plus is I got paid for the giant freelance translation job I did back in July, so I was able to buy myself a new desktop computer and a new pair of glasses (the frames on the ones I have are about ready to fall apart...). I don't generally think of myself as photogenic per se, but I've been thinking of taking a picture, if only for when people harrass me for one online.

It's weird and scary and awesome that I've nearly finished the full first draft of Nekomimi Land. I've never had a story require so much continual revision and soul-searching to get done before. All through the process I've been alternately thinking that I'm accomplishing something really impressive and thinking I'm a total worthless hack. Right now my feeling is that it's just a matter of putting in the time to get it how I wanted, though if I become a professional writer I doubt I'll have the luxury of spending months agonizing over every little sentence. And considering Nekomimi Land is going to be under 20,000 words, I'm frankly a little scared of how long it'll take me to write a full-length novel. I've mentioned before that today a novel is a minimum of 80,000 words, and it occurs to me that there are plenty of great classics (including Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 -- a "mere" 50,000 words) that could've been rejected by publishers on account of length. Of course, there was a time when a 1,000 page book just wasn't practical (which is also why Lord of the Rings was published as three books instead of one).

I think that Nekomimi Land is fundamentally about the individual and soceity, about the cycle of consent that lets culture reproduce like a virus, even if it's constantly mutating. One of the great things about writing is that even for the writer it can be a process of discovery, and it's taken me a long time to really understand what the hell I was getting at all this time. Chloe has been surprising me a lot lately too, and there's a certain important turning point in the story where I got it to a point where I found myself feeling really upset about how things turned out, right alongside Kaylee.

I also started working on a sonnet I've been thinking about, tenatively titled Otaku Prayers, and some initial planning for my next screwed-up novel, Akihabara Love Story.

I've been thinking a lot about otaku culture itself as a subject for writing and art. There's so much potential there, yet it seems like, especially in the English language, it's barely been touched so far. I've been reading a book about the art of Takashi Murakami, a Japanese artist who uses elements of otaku and pop art to make really bizarre, deep stuff, and brought about a movement in Japanese art called Superflat. The results are always intriguing and sometimes outright grotesque too.

I'm especially fascinated with blurring the line between fantasy and reality as a theme. It already happens in people's minds, and technology is gearing up to bring that blurriness to us from the physical plane. Video games and androids are starting to look a lot like the real thing (with the Uncanny Valley coming into play of course), and it raises questions about how much of reality is inside the mind.

That in turn leads to questions of the continuum that resides between connection with people and total solipsism. (*man* i'm using big words...) In Japan it seems like being an otaku automatically cuts you off from a substantial portion of normal social existence. In his book Denpa Otoko, Toru Honda mentions that in college he was pretty average, until one day he announced that he would become an otaku, and suddenly none of the women would go near him. And now in Japan some women's magazines are advocating that 30-somethings should find otaku and try to convert them into normal men, suitable for marriage.

And there's also the ways in which otaku media present things from real life -- relationships, sex, technology, and on and on.

Much to think about.

I've managed to find some time to write, and I have plenty of ideas for new short stories to work on, and quite a few more I want to sit down and revise. Looking through my documents folder, I stumbled across an unfinished story about two friends going to the mall, deliberately written in an overblown Tolkien type writing style, and I definitely want to finish it. I'm also working on a couple of really weird short stories -- which may turn out to be flash fictions or vingettes. And then comes the important step of trying to publish stuff.

Only a tiny bit more to go before this freelance job is finally done! Right on time no less.

I can be a pretty cynical person (actually I'm a cynical optimist -- "life sucks but there's always tomorrow") so my opinions sometimes need to be taken with a grain of salt, but I'm starting to see a pattern of sorts with doing freelance work. I find I have to assume that my contact has what I've decided to call "office disease" -- an affliction that makes a person able to ignore or only selectively reply to any communications that aren't real-time (i.e., anything other than meeting face-to-face or talking directly on the phone). It's necessary to assume that once an assignment is recieved, you'll just be working on it without any further guidance. Don't get me wrong; the freelance stuff has been really rewarding (god forbid, work that has a real feeling of accomplishment) and I've been working with really cool people over all, but yeah. Office disease. My regular work is ten times worse anyway; apparently voice mails might as well not exist as far as my manager is concerned.

Anyway, now hopefully I'll be able to get back into creative stuff. Kingsley's been doing the art for Neko Machi and the results have been great, though I need to find time and energy to work on scripts more. And I've been itching to work seriously on Nekomimi Land -- I've been reading lots of satire/dystopia type books (just finished 1984 and started Battle Royale today) so I've got plenty of inspiration -- plus I have a few ideas for poems and short stories and other things I want to work on. And RPG stuff. And so on. Bleargh.

I also attended a panel on drawing with Steve Bennet. The major thing that struck me there was that he started off with very basic exercises intended to "loosen up" aspiring artists, to prevent art from being an overly linear process, just drawing circles, squares, and triangles without looking at the paper or particularly thinking about anything. It really illustrated what Thinh is always saying about loosening up, and it seems to be one of the more fundamental things in art.

Inspiration For Writing
I'm also going to get a few poems and short stories out of the whole experience. I had been wanting to write something about anime fandom before, but I'd just never figured out how to come at it, how to find the soul of it as it were. I'm glad I got into poetry, because I think it's helped me to learn how to recognize when poems happen around me, to see those moments when the world slows down to the speed of words. For example, once I was just hanging out and a fellow staffer sat down with a bowl of macaroni, clapsed his hands, and began to pray. And it was like, for just a moment this guy transformed from an otaku into a priest, and then "Amen," and sacred silence and it was over. You can't make up stuff like that.

And I finally finished up my calligraphy final project, such as it is. For anyone out there thinking of doing stuff with calligraphy on a big long roll of paper, my advice would be DON'T. Getting the characters to fit the desired length, storying it, gluing it to a backing, etc. I'm probably still going to do some calligraphy stuff now and then (I still have enough materials to last a *long* time), but nothing like that 40-some character poem.

So. Poetry assignments are out of the way (and posted here to boot), as well as my presentation for Readings In Japanese Culture. So, apart from two relatively easy exams, all that's left this semester is a short story and a calligraphy project.

Well, for the calligraphy final project I decided to write out a tanka poem by Takuboku Ishikawa... The problem being that I'm trying to do nearly 40 characters on a scroll, which makes it really hard to keep them reasonably balanced on the paper. On the plus side the rolled paper I got is really absorbent, so at least I don't have to worry about the ink from one part of the paper blotting onto another as I scroll it along. On the other hand I still haven't figured out how the hell I'm going to affix it to the backing. Tape was a bad idea... Hopefully the aerosol glue we have in the basement will actually work... I should test it on something beforehand.

I got a good start on the short story... The assignment is to do a story based on one of the stories we read for the class, so I picked Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart." Writing about a creepy nutcase is fun! Anyway.

I definitely want to do lots of my own creative stuff over the summer. Hopefully I'll actually be able to finish my novella (or at least complete a first draft... ), and maybe work on some short stories. I also want to try and do something a little more ambitious with Neko Machi (possibly including harassing artists I know to do "mini-series" for the comic ), work on the T-shirt designs I started on a while back, get back into the RPG projects I've been neglecting, and probably too many other things besides. For that matter since after looking at the class schedule it looks I'll probably wind up taking poetry writing again next semester (with the same teacher no less) I might as well get a head start on writing more poems. I have a few more ideas for poems that I never finished anyway...

Of all the stuff I have to get done by the end of the semester, the poetry is proving to be the hardest. I find I have a hard time writing poetry unless I'm really inspired... but I have to pump out three more by next Tuesday. One can be anything, but one has to be metrical rhymed sestets (rhyming being the one thing in poetry that really gives me a hard time), and another has to be chosen from among a terza rima, metrical sestina, or split couplets.

I wrote a mediocre non-metrical sestina, inspired by the lyrics from the .hack//SIGN sountrack (naturally it's called "Twilight"). Making a metrical sestina is really freaking hard because the form is based on a repetition of the last word of each line in a specific pattern, so the end words need to be perfectly metrical. Argh. If I can get it to be metrical... Though it'd probably have to be in trochaic meter so that "TWIlight" fits... but then I'd have to ditch "aLONE." Or just have "twilight" break the meter every time it shows up. Or something. Argh.

I got started a bit on "The Hand That Feeds." I think part of the trick is to have the cliche phrase be in the title and nowhere else in the poem, conspicuous by its absensce.

So, now that there's only a few weeks left in the semester, I really have to get cracking on certain things.

For Calligraphy, I need to do my final project, which can be pretty much anything that involves painting or carving on something in Japanese. I'm thinking I want to do something with poetry or somesuch, but I'm still not sure what exactly. And on top of that we're carving hanko (name seals/stamps) in class.

For the short story literature class I need to write a short story in the style of one of the stories we've read -- I'm planning to do one based on Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart.

For my poetry class I need to write FOUR poems to turn in on the last day of class. o.O I have a few ideas, but it's taking some time to develop them into poems. I can never just write the poem; I have to throw out random prose first, and sometimes I can't even do that, and have to scribble random words. I have two at the prose stage, called "Electric Me" and "dreamspam." The third I'm working on is a bit weirder, and may or may not work out. When I heard that the title of the first single from NIN's new album was called "The Hand That Feeds," I was expecting something using imagery of some kind of evil, hungry hand to make some point about something, so I was kind of disappointed to find that the actual song has kind of generic "anti-establishment" themed lyrics, so I'm trying to create the kind of thing I wanted out of that title for myself.

And I'm not getting nearly as much of any of that done as I should because I keep getting sidetracked by this really fucked up novel I'm working on called Nekomimi Land. Chapter 1 of it is a refined version of the Nekomimi story I posted here a while back, and from there the main character gets kidnapped and taken to the land of the catgirls. From there the story is about her learning why Nekomimi Land is actually a horrible dystopia and finding a way to escape. It's easily the darkest story I've ever written, but so far I think it's also one of the best. This is partly because studying the likes of Hemingway has shown me how to work on controlling and tweaking diction and syntax, something I was always kind of weak on before. Lately when I go through stuff I wrote before, I find myself slashing away a lot of "fat" from the prose, and trying a lot harder to "show rather than tell." At some point I ought to finish revising and actually post Grand Theft Dignity, the story I did for a writing workshop class a while back about a video game store clerk.

Still working on more poetry, on account of I have to turn in two pieces by next Thursday. I'm currently working on a villanelle (a fun form with refrain lines and stuff) called "Brainworms," and a poem about Kiyomizudera, the form of which I haven't quite nailed down yet (blank verse, rhymed sestets, or maybe terza rima...).

I'm getting the hang of writing in iambic pentameter, but I find fitting in rhyme scemes to be a pain in the butt sometimes. But anyway.

Still working on the sonnet I have to turn in tomorrow. I remember when I was in high school and the teacher tried to assign the class to write a sonnet, and *ONE* guy pulled it off, doing a sonnet about the toilet backing up at a Christmas party.

Part of the problem is that in the entire four years of high school my English teachers all miserably failed to adequately expalain how the hell meter works in poetry. This is, I understand, an important point because poetry without meter is a relatively new concept. In the Fantasy and Science Fiction course I took last semester the professor, while teaching about Lord of the Rings, managed in about five minutes to explain meter more or less perfectly, and we had Tolkien's examples of different kinds of meter right at our fingertips. The contrast between the Hobbit's iambic tetrameter and the barrow wight's trochaic tetrameter were particularly useful.

On the other hand she also mentioned that pentameter is kind of unnatual to English -- quatrameter is much more natural -- and I'm inclined to agree. In trying to write my sonnet I keep coming up with lines that are perfect except that they need another iamb.

Still, in spite of all the fiddling and frustration involved it's sort of rewarding. Iambic pentameter gives words a certain pleasant "rolling" quality, though it's subtle.

Regardless, I'll be posting up my sonnet pretty soon.
