I was just wondering if anyone else has seen those signs around the city. They are yellow (you can't miss them) and all it says on them is 'LS' with an arrow pointing a certain direction. I was just wondering what they were all about considering I really don't have the time to follow them! lol

I remember one time last year there use to be a few around the city (same style) but said 'HMD' on them I think...H something anyways.

CONTEST
Entries as they come in.
All right, this is a member suggested contest idea - Thanks to *Arielmac for suggesting this contest! What we are going to be looking for is a matched set of Avatar, deviantID and website button. Sizes (typical deviantART) are 88x31 pixels for the website button, 50x50 pixels for the Avatar, and maybe around 350px width for the deviantID.

We'd welcome any other types of images related to this as well (website banners, whatever).

The basic rules are as follows: Contest open to every member (and admin); winner chosen based on votes by members; every person that enters must vote (if you don't vote you can't win); can't vote for your self; nothing offensive/copyrighted in the images; feel free to ask questions for any info you want to include in the images.

The contest will be open till Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005 and voting will run till Monday, Oct. 31, 2005.

What we want submitted is a single image with all the banners/buttons/whatever combined (but clearly shown separate) for the voting stage, with the winner passing along a zip file with all the separate images for use. Please note us with a link to your deviation; we'll compile them all for voting at the end of the contest.

The winner will have his/her designs used for the group till some future time when we decide on a change. Also we have a 3 month subscription in the pot for the winner, to be used at the winner’s discretion.

Alright, some concerns have been raised about the contest we recently ran. I'll attempt to address them here.

After I (=Barastol) attended the devmeet for the ~newfoundland group, I thought it would be cool to sponsor a contest for newfoundland deviations. I brought up the idea to =northernmist and she suggested I run it through the group, and after it started I was invited to come on as co-admin, and help with the contest, and other group things.

My original idea for the contest never changed, I wanted to have the community choose one winner, and I would pick my favorite as the other winner. =northernmist asked me if she could enter, and since she was not running the contest, or directly picking winners I thought it would be a good idea.

We're not that big a group, and can't see excluding people from the contest for frivolous reasons. This was our first contest, and we just kind of played it by ear. All throughout the contest people had ample opportunity to raise concerns or bring forward suggestions, and we still welcome them now.

It just seems a little silly to complain that the personal favourite choice of an individual wasn't your image. That particular image happened to be very well executed and really reminded me of growing up in costal Newfoundland. I went with my gut, not because I wanted a particular person to have the prize. I am not concerned if 1000 other photographers have taken similar shots, they never entered this contest.

We will have to formalize our contest policy before we start the next contest, but I see nothing wrong with how this was done.

I think the next contest will be along the lines of a DevID or something related. This will be 100% community voted, we'll have to figure out if moderators can participate but not win prizes or just not enter. Any thoughts along these lines will be greatly appreciated.

I hope this addresses the concerns of the group members, there was no malice in a moderators participation.

Please bring any further concerns about the group and the running of it to us through notes, we'd prefer not to be maligned in a public forum before we get the chance to address anyone’s concerns.

Remember the group is first and foremost about bringing Newfoundland deviants together and having fun.

So our first Contest has ran it's course, it was good to get participation of the group, and we had a great selection of entries this first time around.

The community pick for winner, based on votes is "Waiting for the Caplin to Roll", by ~scottmartin. Congratulations Scott, it is a great photo, and brought across alot of meaning to people.

=Barastol's pick for his favourite goes to "Newfoundland", by =northernmist. It was tough choosing amongst the many great entries, but this one really reminded me of growing up in small town Newfoundland, and it is technically well composed and presented.

The basic idea of the contest is to come up with a deviation that best brings across "Newfoundland", whether its the place, the people, or the idea. The interpretation of that is open to the deviant, but the description of your deviation should contain some discussion of your idea and what it means.

Limit one submission per member, preferably a new deviation for the contest, but old deviations will be considered. Make a note in the deviation description that it is for this contest.

There will be 2 prizes, the first will be awarded to a deviant of my choice who I think best fulfills the requirements of the contest. The second prize will be awarded based on the votes of the ~newfoundland members. The members will be allowed one vote on the deviation that they think is best.

Prizes will be either deviantART subscriptions, or prints from =Barastol the choice will be up to the winners.

By submitting your work for the contest you agree for it to be used on the ~newfoundland and other places to facilitate the contest. It will be used as it is presented, with attribution and links to the deviation.

I'll set the deadline for submission deadline for September 9th, note your submissions to =Barastol.

Since it was just a small group of us we hung around the duck pond for a bit, while some played/feed the pigeons (and others tried ) while we gave people a chance to arrive. After that we walked up to the bungalow (is that how it is spelled?), taking pictures along the way...leaving a note on the bench for any late comers

We sat around and played some games and chatted. It was good fun.
We drew some names from a bag and won gifts for the fun of it.

Newfie Dev Meet - Aug 21,2005
Everyone seems to agree on Bowering park at 2 in the afternoon - WEATHER PENDING. Ofcourse if it is just light showers there is a gazebo there someone I thought.

Make sure to wear something good on your feet incase we decide to walk around the park taking pictures - Just a thought.
Bring your cameras, pens and paper...whatever you prefer.


On another note:

1.Anyone have any ideas of some little games to play? I have a few ice breakers.
Photo scavenger hunt sounds good. Will work on a list. Anyone have any suggestions you can note me.

2.Should we use name tags? Yes.

3.How long should we plan the visit for or take it as we go? 2-5ish See how the day goes.

4.Should everyone bring a loonie and maybe draw a name from the hat and give that person a subscription to DA? Most seem to agree on this but not required.

5. Bring our own snacks? A small snack sounds good. Or something to share if you wish/not required.

Anyone else have any questions or suggestions?!
If anyone has an idea for a game please note me. All the help the better!

UPDATE:: 1 week away - Anyone have any other suggestions? We will all meet in 1 wk time (time is getting close). If anyone wants to help out with some activity ideas please note me at my account - thanks).

I am in the process of compiling as much video, photo and sound of the Peace-A-Chord festival as I can. I am trying to make a kind of digital compilation of the goings-on of Peace-A-Chord. My hope is that some of you have some video, photos or even some sound clips from past Peace-A-Chord's, and that you will pass these on to me (temporarily) so that I may potentially add them to the DVD('s) that will be made. There is no plan to sell any DVD's that I make. This is mostly for archival purposes for the Peace-A-Chord commitee, and kinda for my self (big projects like this become personal the more work you put into it). So if any of you could help me, or you know anyone who could help me, please send me a note!"

Is the Peace-A-Chord festival going ahead this year? I know the city had some issues with it last year. Did they 'cancel' it in Bannerman Park afterwards?

Oh, after searching on the net I found this, couldn't find a date on it though -> [link] ->Basically it says "The 19th annual Peace-A-Chord music and culture festival takes place August 21 and 22. The Saturday portion of the festival includes workshops from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM and live music from 7:00 PM on and takes place in the LSPU Hall. The Sunday portion includes speakers, workshops, information kiosks, kids activities, entertainment, a graffiti jam and more, between 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM in Bannerman Park. Admission is pay-what-you-can."
