Hopefully I'll do some random stuff over Christmas break, but that doesn't start till this Saturday, really, and I have my research paper to do till then.
Wow, it's been a while...welcome to junior year, where life is CRAZY! =] I've had so much homework and such that I barely have time to myself, though it's much better now that marching band is over. Thanksgiving break next week, so I get from Wednesday to Monday off...yay! I might get some Photo stuff up here at some point, though I can't promise anything because I'm still trying to figure out something in Photoshop, plus I need to rewrite the DVD with my projects on it. Blah.
Life's been interesting lately...I was insanely happy for a while then did a total face-plant in the walk of life, as it were. I've got an AP class, an independent study class (since when does "independent" not have an "a" at the end, like "--dant"? ugh), marching band, CYWS, and photo, which I think involves taking like 50 pictures every weekend, and trying to maintain something resembling a social life...wow this will be crazy!
Speaking of photography, I do have some pictures that I edited over the summer & should have up hopefully soon, but some are better than others, so I don't know how many will end up here.
Well, I'm really happy to report that I got an early birthday present: Mom got me a music theory book! That may sound really weird to some of you for me to be happy about, but when I went to JMOC, I realized how little I knew about music theory when they started talking about diminished chords and phrygian (sp?) scales, I was like "WTH?!" so I asked my ever-knowledgeable uncle who knows everything there is to know about music, and apparently he told my mom about a book, and it came in the mail today! Along with it came the complete Trio for Flute, Oboe, and Piano by Madeleine Dring that Mom has had on back order now for like two years! Now I have an original copy (Sarah and I played the second movement for church a few weeks ago and got many compliments...that piece is absolutely GORGEOUS)!
In other music news, band starts Monday...I'm actually really excited because it will give me something to do, and I'm finally a junior, aka SOMEONE SLIGHTLY MORE IMPORTANT...I'm just thankful to be done with sophomore year lol (and don't even talk about freshman year...no status whatsoever! haha).
In other news, my mom turned 30 (in hexadecimal...) yesterday, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM! Less than a month till I finally turn 16, opening up many possibilities to me, including going to Germany (hopefully lol), being able to work the sound board at church, and finally getting an ID! Sweet!
[infinite x's and o's]
--me
PS. Is the emoticon for "Excited" not the greatest thing since sliced bread? omg! lol

Well, I got back from John Mack Oboe Camp yesterday, and it was seriously one of the most busy and amazing weeks of my life! The food there was good (ah, the important things in life) and the scenery was really pretty but hard to photograph (you know what I mean?) so I'll have a few pictures up most likely but not too many. I might post the one of me and my little group of friends (Hannah, Rebecca, and Lisa) at some point but I should probably ask them first haha. Anyway, I got home and got my letter from COYO saying "unfortunately, we do not have a seat for you in the oboe section for the 2008-2009 season..." shock shock shock (can you tell I'm being facetious? lol) yeah I really wasn't expecting to get in, and it really makes my life easier because I wouldn't have been able to do both that and CYWS, and I LOVE CYWS!! Speaking of, I decided that I probably won't go on the trip to wherever they decide to go after my senior year because I will probably be going back to JMOC, which I can't do next year (most likely) because I'll be doing what Alicia is and going to Deutschland! Just gotta keep my grades up. =]
Yup, so I think that's all for now. Now that I have nothing to practice fore, I can relax for a while and start summer reading! ew! haha
[infinite x's and o's]
--me
PS. OH!! I almost forgot! For those of you who like reading stories about the holocaust, I read an AMAZING one called "In My Hands" about a girl who is 17-ish and ends up helping people..it's INCREDIBLE. Some of the situations she gets herself into are insane and it's a miracle she does as well as she does. READ THIS BOOK!
Yeah, I decided today that May is my favorite month. It's spring in April, obviously, but May is the type of spring that everyone associates spring characteristics with. Pleasant temperatures, amazing weather, etc...and yes, by amazing weather, I include the spring showers because I love storms and rainy days (I just don't particularly enjoy thunder at night...I can never sleep! haha). Obviously, in May is also the event of flowers starting to bloom and such, making for some good photography opportunities...I'm going to my cousin's birthday party soon so hopefully I can get some good pictures. I also have some other ideas that I've been meaning to do, and I think I might get a chance to work on some of those this weekend...that's all for now!
[infinite x's and o's]
--me

Well, spring break is here, but I can't really say finally since I've only had one full 5-day week since Christmas break...between the CYWS trip, random days off school, and being sick one day, the only five day week I had was the week before this one--also happened to be OGT week. EW. OGTs suck. Don't even get me started on a rant because I will talk for, like, ever. lol
Anyway, I'm glad it's spring break but the last nine to ten weeks that we go without a break is gonna be ridiculously long and tedious. Oh well...such is life.
So my family and I aren't really doing anything interesting over break. I think I might actually sit down and force myself to make German notecards...I've started already, and it's not taking nearly as long as I thought it would so that's good. Next Sunday I'm going rock climbing with a bunch of other girls (and friends) from youth group, so that's gonna be way fun (it's indoor, btw).

In other news, I finally decided to ask Brian to help me install Maya on my computer (a 3-D rendering thing). The "learning package" or something is free, but the real thing costs like $5000 (I think..) so we decided to look up equivalents for Linux. We found Blender, then realized it's already on the network for my computer so I installed it. I haven't gotten around to doing anything serious with it yet, other than loading all the help files onto my computer (this means I had to go on THIS computer, save all the tutorials from the web site, and put them on my upstairs computer because my parents won't let me get internet on the one in my room and I guess Linux users don't believe in help files) and I've looked at them a bit but it's all very overwhelming. Hopefully I'll get some time this next week to look at it some more. If anyone has any advice, please let me know!
[infinite x's and o's]
--me

Well, I got back yesterday from the OMEA State Convention with CYWS...group one got to perform there. w00t! It was a lot of fun, and I liked missing two days of school for it lol.
The first day was basically the drive down...our bus got a flat tire before we left, so we sat in Denison for about a half hour waiting for the next bus to come. It came and we got down to Kentucky (haha, why are we staying in Kentucky when the convention is in Cincinnati? I dunno, but the hotel was really nice!) without any problems.
Random thought: usually when you room with a few other people, at least one of them showers in the morning. All four of us preferred to shower at night. Hm. lol
Anyway, we had our concert & I got to see my uncle and Hoef--yay! I was happy they both got to hear us perform.
Then we went out to Buca di Beppo's (sp?) and it was really good...me and Mary sat by some hilarious people...I witnessed the greatest conversation I've ever heard in my life hahaha:

Girl #1: You see that guy over there?
Girl #2: Um, there are, like, ten guys "over there."
Girl #1: The one with his tux jacket still on.
Girl #2: Oh, yeah. Why?
Girl #1: If he grew a few inches, lost a little weight, shaved, and cut his hair, wouldn't he look just like Jason?
Girl #2: Umm...maybe...
Guy: That's a lot of ifs, you know.
Girl #1: Yeah, whatever.
Guy: No, look. See that girl over there? At the end of the table?
Girl #1: Yeah...why?
Guy: If she grew a little, gained some weight, cut her hair, and lowered her voice, she'd be JUST LIKE ME.
Me & Girl #2: HAHAHA!
Girl #1: Shut up!
It was so great...

The next day we got to wander for, like, four hours. Me and two of my roomies wandered around the exhibit hall thing and got some college stuff (yay for Capital where I kind of want to go) and I bought the Barret Method for Oboe book--aka the oboist's Bible lol. I have to finish the Niemann before I can use the Barret, but now that I have it, I don't have to buy it later and I got a good deal on it. Apparently I got the old one, but if all that's wrong with it is a few accidentals that I can mark in with a pencil, I'd say $12 off isn't bad at all. =]
Got to see Zack, Phil, and meet Phil's girlfriend, so that was fun.
I think that's about all.
Well, other than the fact that I have a huge pile of homework to do & make up. Blech.
[infinite x's and o's]
--me

So yeah, S&E was yesterday. I was in the afternoon (ew) but it wasn't that bad. I still like being in the morning and getting it over with better. Anyway, I got ones on both my oboe solo (class A, the marcello) and English horn solo (class B, Sicilienne or something to that effect by Faure). I was surprised to get a one on my oboe solo from what happened while I was playing it, but I don't feel like going into that. Let's just say I messed up something and leave it at that. I've told some of you anyway. lol
Anyway, Sarah and Elysia both got ones on their flute solos--YAY!! Hmm...Brian got a one on his trombone solo because he's amazing like that. I'm still sad he's deciding not to do ANYTHING with music in college...not even band! He's so good! Oh well, that's his choice.
In other news, our pastor is on sabbatical so we're having guest pastors come preach at our church, and today we had Pastor George, who was the interim pastor at our church for about probably three or four years...i was eight when he left. He is such an amazing pastor in so many ways...his preaching just puts me in the best mood I'm really happy he's coming back two more times. I have such great memories from when he was our pastor. *sigh* That's all for now.
[infinite x's and o's]
--me

So I was surfing around dA and managed to find one of those "calculate how stupid you are" things, and it sounded intriguing...I know, you're laughing at me right now going "Laura, you shouldn't have to calculate that to know it's at 100%!!"
[ ] ive accidentally caused an explosion.

[ ] if someone says the word "fart," i cant help but laugh.
[x] i just tried to lick my elbow. (what? you didn't?)

[x] people often shake their heads and walk away from me. (not walk away, but pretty darn close)

[ ] ive ran around naked when i was drunk.

[ ] ive ran into a golfcart tire when i was drunk.

[x] ive searched all over the place for something, and then realized it was in my hand the whole time. (doesn't everyone?)

[x] i accidentally break a lot of things. (just ask my family about my "talent" for never opening things the right way and mutilating the box...haha)

[ ] my friends know not to use big words around me.

[ ] my friends like me because im fun to laugh at. (maybe sometimes)

[x] i move my head to the side when im confused.

[x] sometimes i start telling a story and suddenly forget what im talking about.

[x] ive fallen out of my chair before.

[x] when im laying in bed, i sometimes stare at the ceiling and try to find pictures and words in the texture. (and during class, i've been known to count ceiling tiles...*sigh*)

Total score: 18

Once you get your answer multiply by three and repost as "I'm (YOUR PERCENTAGE HERE)% stupid"
Mkay....*does math on fingers* teehee 60% stupid. This is rather depressing.

So anyway, I'll probably be posting in a few days to talk about Solo & Ensemble and all that, and then I'll delete this entry in shame of my 60% stupidity, and all will be well in the world. That's all for now.

Well, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas or whatever holiday they happen to celebrate. I know mine was enjoyable. We actually didn't get around to opening presents (much to my cousin's chagrin haha) until around 2 in the afternoon, but he got to go first so that helped a little. Among other things, I got The Hot Zone by Richard Preston (the most amazing book about the Ebola virus--I've read it before but I wanted my own copy lol), an iSoundSomethingOrOther which is a clock radio that you can plug your iPod into (yay now I can wake up to VAN HALEN AND AEROSMITH EVERY MORNING!! haha), some oboe stuff (staples, something for the thumb rest to make it less uncomfortable, and two CDs), and TICKETS TO GO SEE WICKED!! I'm wayyy excited! I know it won't be as good as the original (well, probably not) but Mom and Brian haven't ever seen it so I got three tickets and they can go too!! w00t w00t. So that's what I'll be doing on February 24th.
Then we played the dice game which is the most amazing thing in the world...here's the rules if you want them. If not, you don't have to read any more.

THE DICE GAME:
For starters, you need at least one present for everyone playing. We set a limit at $2 so you can find some fun stuff at like Walgreens or WalMart. Or wherever.
Take the number of people playing at get over half that number of sets of dice (like we play with 9 people, so about 5 sets is good)
Here's where the fun begins.
Have someone set the timer so only they know how much time is on it (usually around 15-20 minutes is the most you want to go) and start the timer. If you have the dice, roll them...if you roll doubles, roll again. If you get a 7 or 11, take a present out of the middle. If you get anything else, pass them on (go clockwise or counterclockwise..it doesn't matter, as long as everyone goes in the same direction). You MUST take all the presents from the middle before you start stealing from other people. Continue until the timer goes off, then unwrap and enjoy seeing how people disguise the random stuff you've gotten! Have fun!
That's all for now!

I'd like to thank Corinne for this...she originally gave me this [link] and I find it interesting seeing what computers have to say about me. So after clicking on 10 blocks of color until they all disappeared and clicking on them again in a different order, here's what it says I am.

Your Existing Situation
Seeks to express the need for identification in a sensitive and intimate atmosphere where esthetic or emotional delicacy can be protected and nurtured.

Your Stress Sources
Has an unsatisfied need to ally herself with others whose standards are as high as her own, and to stand out from the herd. Her control of her sensual instincts restricts her ability to give herself, but the resulting isolation leads to the urge to surrender and allow herself to merge with another. This disturbs her. as such instincts are regarded as weaknesses to be overcome; she feels that only by continued self-restraint can she hope to maintain her attitude of individual superiority. Wants to be loved or admired for herself alone; needs attention, recognition, and the esteem of others.

Your Restrained Characteristics
Believes that she is not receiving her share--that she is neither properly understood or adequately appreciated. Feels that she is being compelled to conform, and close relationships leave her without any sense of emotional involvement. Feels that things stand in her way, that circumstances are forcing her to compromise and forgo some pleasures for the time being.

Your Desired Objective
Her need to feel more causative and to have a wider sphere of influence makes her restless and she is driven by her desires and hopes. May try to spread her activities over too wide a field.

Your Actual Problem
The fear that she may be prevented from achieving the things she wants leads her into a relentless search for satisfaction in the pursuit of illusory or meaningless activities.

Your Actual Problem #2
Feels insufficiently valued in her existing situation, and is seeking different conditions in which she will have greater opportunity of demonstrating her worth.

HEY! Corinne only had one actual problem! teehee "meaningless activites" I was surprised how true this actually is. Maybe you've learned something about me, maybe you didn't, but I did. lol

OMG! Anyway, I found some pictures from Chicago that I thought y'all might like, plus a picture of me from homecoming. Other than that, nothing really is going on.

I swear, I better have gotten all the badness out of the way for this month today. First I find out that I can't go to Germany this summer. Frau Hahn's not really worried about me not knowing enough vocab (lol, seeing as I've asked her to teach me stuff not learned till German III) but I'm not OLD enough. Apparently you have to be 16 to do anything fun over there, so I would be left out of a lot or something. I don't really mind, I guess, but i was really looking forward to going there this summer. Mom says that she and Dad will at least talk about hosting someone this year then I can request to have them next year when I do go over.
Now for the locker. (This is actually really funny looking back but at the time I was so freaked out...) The janitors were able to take the combination lock off of my locker since I can't see the numbers too well, so I brought a padlock in to school this morning to obviously lock my locker. So before band, I was like "hey, we're going to Lee Eaton so I won't need my purse!" *shuts purse in locker* Yeah, you guessed it. BOTH keys were in my purse. Mr. Tanner ended up having to cut the lock off my locker to get the #&(#$*^ thing open. Now I'm gonna give the spare key to Frau Hahn since her room is nearby. (I had a spare key IN my purse in case the lanyard the main one was on ever got taken off...guess I never thought about if my purse ends up in my locker haha)
So that's about it for now. I'll hopefully have some more deviations soon.
PS. MANY THANKS TO PATRICK, who tried to pick the lock with a paper clip. At least he tried!

So...CYWS was fun yesterday. The music (excluding "Hymn for Band") looks like it's gonna be awesome this year. We're playing Aspen Jubilee, which one of the Case bands did last year at the CYWS II concert and Symphonic Overture which the OTHER Case band did at the same concert. I thought it sounded familiar. lol I somehow managed to get fifth chair (out of eight) which I was rather surprised to see, since I wasn't expecting anything higher than seventh or last chair..lol. The last chair oboist also plays harp!! I'M SO JEALOUS!
Yeah, and we qualified for state competition last night at Crestwood. Runner-up for grand champion and first in color guard (yeah yeah go Elysia!) and first in class A. w00t!
Anyway, that's about it for now.

The school year is off to a pretty good start for me...only one B right now in Honors Physics! w00t...I'm surprised I have an A in Algebra, but we have a test tomorrow so it probably won't stay that way for long. lol
So yeah, band last night was fun, but we didn't qualify for states. Only Avon did...along with getting every other award. urgh Avon! Avon! Avon! Avon! Avon! Avon! SHUT UP ALREADY. But we did take second place overall, though I don't think Hoef was thrilled. Avon's show was pretty good, though, even if their percussion and band weren't together a lot of the time. We also got second place overall Auxillary...yay for Elysia & the rest of them!
I felt like updating, so that's all I pretty much have to say. Hope life is going well for y'all.
Band camp this year was AMAZING--way better than last year. The senior paper was awesome, so were the skits and awards...like the puberty award (lol!!) and the award for Denato about being the best friend to come over the border legally or whatever. The new dorms were really nice but the location was WAY too far away for me to really love them, plus there was no big common room where we could watch the Dart Championships or whatever. lol
Marching-wise, we actually got through the whole show and put music to it all, so we're doing really well this year. Jessie and Craig were the best low brass helpers EVER!!! They said they'll come back next year--yay!
That's all I feel like writing, except for some little inside jokes that certain or all members of the band will get:
MY CAMERA ATE MY MEMORY CARD AND THREW IT UP AND NOW IT DOESN'T WORK. I might not be able to get my vacation pictures off of it, some of which I was going to post on dA. They were cool, too! Dad says he'll see what he can do...I hope he gets them off!
He's been telling me I can take a sledgehammer to it whenever I want. I didn't take him up on the offer, because I could deal with it turning on randomly and freezing (just take the batteries out then and you're good!) randomly but EATING A MEMORY CARD IS UNACCEPTABLE and I might take him up on the offer. So I might not have a digital camera for a while, therefore I might not deviate for a while. DARN.

So vacation was fun...ten days of camping in (buggy) New York. I actually didn't get many bug bites (I usually get a TON) and Dad got eaten alive by something lol. College-wise, it was fun. (For those of you that don't know, we made Brian's college visits into a vacation)
First was Cornell. The campus was HUGE which I don't like but very pretty. They had some cool research things, like turning color into sound for blind people...I, naturally, was drawn to that one even though I'm not totally blind. Just mostly.
Next up was Rochester Institute of Technology. Brian really liked it, but since it's more for engineering (which is what he wants to do), I didn't like it. I'm thinking more medical research with a music minor (maybe) or something so that school was not my cup of tea, as it were.
Next was University of Rochester (affiliated with Eastman School of Music!!!) Mom and I didn't get a chance to check out the music school since it was way on the other side of campus. That is now my second choice (number one, of course, being Capital...) We had a really hot tour guide (no, that did NOT have any impact of how I liked the campus! lol) who was majoring in like sign language or something since U of R is a school with the largest deaf population. Or something. Anyway, they have a tunnel system that takes you to most of the buildings, so that's pretty cool. Their flower is the dandelion and their mascot is a yellow jacket. Huh.
Finally, we had Rensselaer. If I had to choose a college for its name and nothing else I would either go to Rensselaer or Syracuse. Anyway, none of us were impressed with RPI at all (What's the P stand for? I have no clue. Never bothered to figure it out)
Camping-wise, our trip was pretty quiet. We didn't have any neighbors trying to put a tent up and one side kept falling down (that was HILARIOUS) or anyone trying to get juuuuuuust the right reception on their satellite (seriously, we're CAMPING. Who cares??) but it was nice and peaceful. The first campground was right on the New York thru-way (or whatever it's called) but at leas the traffic was a pretty steady noise. The second place had bathrooms from the Civilian Conservation Corps era and they were surprisingly clean. Relatively, anyway. Not the best campgrounds we've stayed at, but definitely not the worst. At least they had showers.
Anyway, that's about all that's important. If you read this whole thing, good for you. If you didn't, even better for you...you didn't waste your time.
So the higlight of last night's all-district band concert was when the power went out. DAS HAT SPASS GEMACHT!!! I can't wait till the band thing at Kent tomorrow...not only do we get to miss school, I get to ask Danna about her oboe and maybe GET ONE OF MY VERY OWN SOON! Yes, only a true oboist would be as giddily excited about that as I am (lolol). so anyway...BAD day today, but I don't need to go into details because it doesn't involve any of the people that read this (for the most part) so yup.
So we got back yesterday from our trip with band, seeing as the band part was kinda an afterthought, so I figured it'd be kinda weird to call it a band trip lol. Only Corinne was excited about the band part of it.
THURSDAY: the bus ride was okay, other than the history lesson from Ms. Levy about Mozart or whoever me and Corinne was talking about. The hotel was cool, but this is coming from a person who has camped almost every summer of her life and is used to staying in a campground with crappy bathrooms/latrines for a week or so. (Like the one place in Colorado where you'd flush the toilets and the showers would run...yes, that place was WAY screwed up.) Then we went out to pizza which had about a 4 to 1 ratio of cheese and pizza. Wicked was totally awesome on SO many different levels. I mean, come on. If Patrick almost cried, it's gotta be good lol. (I didn't, but I can't cry about things like that...my only moods are happy and mad and I'll only get sad about really important stuff. Like running out of lip gloss...just kidding!)
FRIDAY: The Science and Industry Museum was kinda cool...the only exhibit I really liked was the one on the U-505...I love stuff about German U-boats. (Seen the movie U-571, anyone? OMG I LOVE THAT MOVIE. Still have to see Das Boot) The Shedd Aquarium was good until I was with Patrick and Kelly, who were getting along for once. I wouldn't have minded them taking so long at every tank to take pictures except I didn't have a camera to speak of. The dolphin show I could have done without. Next was the Sears Tower...that was SWEET. I leaned out over the edge like in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and was impressed at how squishable the cars and buses looked. Used my last pics up there (yes, I was the only one on the trip with a disposable camera since my digital one randomly turns on and I didn't trust it.) So then we went to Navy Pier and had dinner at Bubba Gump's, which was way fun. Hoef had a birthday. Then after that, like four people got these air cannons and were having fun shooting each other and stuff. The people working there must've thought we were crazy. Then Mallory and Corinne recited the little poem in Build-a-Bear and there was like one other person in the store so they turned and looked at M and C really weirdly...that was pretty funny.
SATURDAY: Dixie Band thing. Only Corinne was excited about it, like I said. We did pretty well. Nothing much exciting happened there. Then we went shopping at a mall for four hours, which was pretty fun. I got some blue hair dye so I can finally streak my hair blue and have it in for more than a day. lol That night was the Blue Man Group, which was totally AWESOME and hilarious. I wasn't looking forward to it, since I was kinda tired, but it ended up being WAY better than I thought. The bus ride home was annoying, since I canNOT sleep in an upright position--I MUST be laying down, so I kinda went in and out of sleeping all night. I ended up sleeping most of Sunday.
So there's the trip, leaving out the interesting bits of dialogue that went on between mostly Patrick, Katie, Mallory, and our whole group of friends...wow. I wasn't there for it, but apparently Truth or Dare at two in the morning can be quite interesting.
[infinite x's and o's]
--me
PS. OMG I left out the most IMPORTANT part of the trip! Patrick is now very proud of me...I ended up getting the little miniskirt that actually does cover my butt from Hard Rock Cafe (oh yeah, Hoef had another birthday there...85 years!) and I tried it on...it fits very nicely! Mom was like "that's nice, don't wear it to church." lolol So that's my life right now haha

PPS. If anyone actually read all of that, you must have no life or are utterly BORED. haha

Well, I was gonna fast today since my reasoning is if Jesus can go 40 days without eating or drinking, I can do one without eating (Mom said I should drink so I don't get dehydrated) but I decided not to like I did last year. One of my life goals now is to actually fast one of these years on the day before Easter. It's not like I'm going to the Easter Vigil tonight, since it's at like 5:30....come on, a vigil should be at like midnight like it used to be. Oh well. At least the songs are good during the Easter season...probably my favorite time in the Church calendar.
So anyway, it's been a while since I updated. nm2r again...just felt like updating.
Next week is CHICAGO!!! I'm psyched...I get to spend FOUR WHOLE DAYS WITHOUT ANYONE FROM MY FAMILY and also with people I don't know totally well, which will be really nice so maybe I can make some new friends or something. lol oo maybe there'll be some hot guys there....w00t O.o
haha

Okay, so I decided to try the iPod thing. It sounded fun. It might be a little interesting, seeing as half (or over) of my music on there is classical with no words, but ya never know. So here goes.
