Preparation for the workforce, what what?

Anyway, if anyone is curious, I'll be spending the next couple years hereabouts learning how to make fancy animation and thinking "I'll never be as good as such-and-such artist! Time permitting,(and if I don't chicken out) I'm going to dress as Azula for the Avatar event. Because, even though we look nothing alike, she's a fun villain and I'd like to attempt the bad-assery. Er...does anyone know how that cosplay business works, by the way? Do you brave the weather and wear your costume all day, or just bring it with you and change when appropriate? I know there will be a fan meet-up, but haven't heard whether it's scheduled yet.

I'm unphotogenic and socially-awkward even at parties where I do know everyone, but the awesomness of the con experience will be worth it. Hope I'll meet some of you there.

And if you are bored, the mechanical contrivium is usually good for a few laughs.
Apparently, I'll have been a member of dA one year, as of tomorrow. That seems to be deserving of some journal entry, even if it is a silly rant.

It's mostly my thinking aloud. Consider yourself warned.

-------------------------------------------------------

I've always thought of myself as un-girly, and remember being annoyingly proud of that when I was younger. I played with plastic dinosaurs and pirate legos as a kid, didn't like pink, detested frilly things, built contraptions and suspension bridges out of household junk and read a ludicrous amount of comic books. Stereotypically boy-related preferences, y'know.

Soo...I'm clearing out my warehouse of a room, trashing the useless things that have accumulated under my bed and and been stuffed in my closet for ten years....and Lo, I rediscover many, many drawings and doodles of things from Days Long Past.

Most of them are cats. Or rainbow-colored horses. Or horses with big bat wings. Or anthropomorphic cat-people, since humans were @#$% difficult to draw. (They still often are.) And lots of these drawings look like those scenes in Disney movies where the two characters break into a romantic love ballad as they dance in the rain...i.e. stereotypically-cutesy/girly subjects. So much for my perceived self-image.

I don't know what I'm trying to say here; I've got nothing against cat-people and horses and Disneyesque dances in the rain...all those are very nice, and plenty of artists wiser and more talented than I make a grand living out of such subjects. I know I have some of them on my watch list, or in my favourites. I guess...it just makes me laugh to look at those drawings and see how my interests have changed as I grew older. Really, the biggest, maybe best, change is feeling less embarrassed about letting other people see the things I draw. Oh, I'm sure I'll always feel silly about some interests or some of the bizarre "Where the deuce did that come from?" sketches that I tend to flip quickly past in my sketchbook; that's just pride, after all. I'll look at those again someday and laugh at myself, and maybe someone else will, too.

Those particular cat-people of yesteryear, however, will never be seen by mortal eyes other than mine.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's to another year of being inspired, impressed, and amused by the dA community. Cheers, all!

...now, somehow, somewhere, I must find the fortitude to look through the 800+ new deviations in my oft-neglected message box.

Seriously. Where did October go? It occurs to me that I have an inconceivable lot of things to do before 2008, and only two months remaining in which to do them. Gah! Now, I knew this would happen; I always procrastinate, no matter the severity of the situation. And yet, I was kinda hoping at this point I would be more prepared for grad-school applications. In other words, I'd best get busy finishing/starting some art, and packaging it all nice and impressive into a decent portfolio. I just completed the GRE (graduate record examination- a test generally required for grad-school entry here in the states, for those who don't know), a few hours ago. I'm still kicking myself for all the vocabulary I should have studied more thoroughly, the stupid time-wasting mistakes committed on the writing section, and for not finishing the maths portion. Argh. I haven't had to think about that sort of timed testing for four years, and my head still hurts from frustration. Hopefully, the scores will be acceptable and I won't have to retake the ugly thing.

Okay...that's enough self-criticizing rant. On the positive side of life: I now know why my car has died twice in the past week, and the problem should be easily fixed, without costing an insane amount of money I don't have. Also, recently I found a ten-dollar note in a parking lot. I'm saving it to buy myself something special. XD

And I'm very far behind on dA things lately, especially responses that I owe people. I'm sorry about that...hopefully I'll be able to catch up before this weekend, now that the GRE is off my to-do list.

Happy belated Guy Fawkes Day to all!

1. I'm a quiet, very introverted person by nature. And yet somehow, in the company of friends, I turn into a sarcasm-flinging big-mouthed buffoon. Meh. *shrug*

2. I can tie a shoe with my toes.

3. I hope to work in animation - maybe storyboarding, or character design.

4. I tend to overexplain myself, especially in things like this.

5. I'm a fan of etymology - I could waste so many days on the internet looking up big words, and the meanings of names.

6. I'm really unphotogenic. You know that one person in your group shots who leans at an awkward angle, or looks like they have three chins, or has a weird squint? That's me...in every picture...every time.

Woo. And it only took me...what, three weeks?...to do that, after being tagged initially? I'm such a procrastinator. Ah well.
Lo, I shall go forth and tag some people in no particular order, and yea verily, shalt they be tagged
oh, and my lease ends tomorrow, so I had to drive back to college and clean the house with my roommates, hoping my passive-aggressive landlady will return my security deposit in whole as a result. I've scrubbed down the bathtub with about five different cleansers and it still has this scummy look to it. phooey.

I am beside myself with glee. Last week, I'd finally decided to ignore my cheapskate tendencies and ordered an affordable tablet online. I was expecting it to arrive around Friday...but not ten minutes ago, there's a ring at the door and the UPS man delivers it! I'm not ashamed to admit I did a really happy-squealy embarrassing-awkward spasm-dance right there in the front hall. I might have disturbed the dog during the process.

So much for cleaning the house today. W00t!
on fandom-related stuff, if anyone is morbidly interested:

Yep, I've seen the Avatar videos from Comic-con. Do I have an emotional response to certain character developments? Nah, though I am excited to see how the story progresses to that point. I'm MORE curious as to where Sokka got that crazy hat.

..and I finally finished Harry Potter 7. It felt a bit as though I was reading fanfiction at the end, there, but the chapter on Snape's memories and the post-book interviews with J.K. Rowling made up for it, I think. Overall, I liked it. And that's all I have to say.

Today was Independence Day, so I went out and about and watched everybody shooting off firework displays. And I do mean everybody; a fine smoke cloud has been hanging over the city all week. Those crazy pyrotechnic-lovin' kids like to start early. I'm not very patriotic, but I do like fireworks. We don't celebrate nearly enough firework-dependent holidays here, in my opinion. Sigh. And then I returned home and made imitation-crab sushi, thanks to the tutelage of cool Malaysian roommates. Mmmm....imitation crab.

Right. So, I'm in this course called "Artist in Residence", where three fairly well-known artists visit my school during 2-week intervals over the semester, and the students in the class work on some massive project with said artist. Weekends, sleep, and boring schoolwork are all sacrificed for the glory that is hanging out with these famous artist-people. Our current visitor is George Pratt, a darn nice guy, and darn good illustrator (though, I can't say I'm terribly impressed by his writing) . He has this nifty technique of using about five different kinds of media, including tar and wood varnish, to create these gritty, multilayered pieces, usually with war or historical themes. You might know him as the artist from Batman: Harvest Breed, or Wolverine:Netsuke.

His two weeks are essentially one super-condensed studio class, and ought to result with some pretty nice artwork for everyone involved. Hope so. I could use some unusual portfolio pieces. His main website is, easily enough, georgepratt.com, so go check him out.

Hurrah for spring break! I don't know when I've ever been more grateful for a school reprieve, even though I'm supposed to use this week to finish a huge amount of concept drawings and work on my XNA game for studio. Gah, I'm so tired of this college business...just want to go home, see the fam, and lie on the couch and watch TCM for a couple of days, perhaps, before I think about anything else. Hopefully I'll be able to REALLY finish some deviant art, then. My gallery needs serious help.
