First of all, I would like to apologize for not updating for two months. Last month I was forced to move unexpectedly and that has put me way behind with everything on dA, but hopefully I can get all caught up in the next few days with this site. All new watchers have been added and the journals updated. Now all I need to do is go through the watch for Ohio related deviations.

For the few people who sent in features I'm planning on making a nice news article showcasing your thumbs and Ohio in general. So be on the lookout for it over the next few days.


Now on to the bigger news:

Groups, the official club platform dA has been promising for over 3 years, is finally in Alpha testing, and will soon be in beta. I am hoping to convert this site to an official Group the minute groups go beta. (Seriously, as soon as I see it I am going to apply for conversion). That means the way the club functions will change dramatically, and hopefully we'll get a lot more active, since you all can upload your own work directly to the club!

I'm not sure how to handle submissions yet, so take a look at our recent poll here: [link] and leave some feedback. Basically, there's a couple different ways we can handle member artwork: we can start using the gallery again, and you'll be able to post your own art directly to the gallery. Doing so simply creates a link back to your work, so other members will go directly to the original piece of art when they open it from their message centers. Isn't that awesome? The downside is you'll be getting a lot of deviations in your devwatch when for the past year or so you've only gotten about one a month from us. So if we do use the gallery option we'll likely have to set up some sort of limit, like one per week or the like. The other option is to use the Group collection feature, which is akin to how the club operates now, except the collects need to be user generated (i.e. you have to manually collect your own work into the group) because Groups have no way to devwatch members. Group collections, from what I've been told by the people working on the Group platform, will not give a piece a fave and will likely not affect the popularity algorithm for a piece. (So a Group Collect is the same as a Gallery submit, except that the members don't get the piece in their devwatches).

Whew! Did any of that make sense? The poll also addresses just what the club should feature - do we focus just on Ohio related deviations, or should we rather focus on being a place where Ohio loving people can come and hang out and share any type of art? Of course we can do both, by splitting up the two submission methods.

Finally, Groups can have lots of admins because you manage a group directly from your own site rather than logging in to the Group itself (there's no password to share). So if anyone would like to help out, just let me know. There might be positions for people to approve submissions, for people to update the "blog" (journal), for people to manage the collections, for people to approve new members, etc. Then the club will always be active.


So that's the big news. I hope it's stopped raining on everyone now. Goodness it rained too much this week.

Club Submissions

Starting Immediately, the club will be submitting by Collections. Here's how it will work:

Periodically I will go through the watch here and collect anything that is obviously Ohio related or is explained to be so in the deviation's title or description.

For Older or Unmarked Art:

1. Send the club a note with up to 5 thumbs of your Ohio themed deviations. (5 is the limit for thumbs in a note). Please send thumbs only, no links. Don't know how to get the thumb code? Just read this faq:

2. The club will then Collect your thumbs into our Favorites. When the collection reaches at least 12 thumbs or two weeks have passed since the last Collection, the current Collection will close and the club members notified.

3. The club will notify members of the new submissions by taking a screenshot of the collection and loading it into the gallery with a link to the Collection for members to follow. From the Collection you may open up the thumbs you wish to view individually, or view all by clicking on the first thumb (no new windows or tabs) and using the arrows to navigate through all pieces in the Collection. The screenshot thumb will also be added to the welcome journal with a reminder for members to view the new submissions.

4. Anything Ohio related is welcome (not only photos of Ohio places, which is what we seem to be getting, generally). For example, fanart of a show or movie that is set in Ohio, pictures or portraits of famous Ohio residents or athletes, and the like. Not sure if something is acceptable? Just note the club.

5. The gallery will continue to be used for club related deviations (like IDs and stamps), and for project entries.

Featured Deviation Project

Now that the club is moving over to submissions by Collection, the gallery will get very empty, and that's no fun. So here's our first project idea to keep it from looking so lonely:

Take a Picture, Make a Manip, Draw Something Traditionally or Digitally. The catch? It Must Contain the State's Name in it!

Entries will be added to the gallery and the winner will become the Featured Deviation. (At the moment that's the only prize we have to offer - anyone want to offer a journal feature or other type of prize? )

The project will close August 31st.

Old deviations are welcome, as long as they meet the criteria.
