My Lovely Wife (Joan) seems to think I have to much stuff! So today was the semi annual rearranging of the garage to make it fit, this happens twice a year to accomendate the season. Now with a two car garage, you'd think I'd have plenty of room. I mean 576 square feet of storage space pretty much just for all my stuff. In the house I'm lucky she leaves me a drawer to put my socks in! But with two boats, the pickup and a jeep along with the lawn mower a roto tiller, and an assortment of garden tools, the barbeque grill, not to mention more tools, along with the snow blowers (yes I have two, don't ask!),space is at a premium to say the least! It does take a bit of engenuity I'll admit that. But our younger son, who is still here at home and I have this down to a science now. The Cuddy Cabin goes to the dry dock yard for the winter. The flat bottom remains outside where it normally is, minus it's outboard motor which tucks away neatly on a saw horse in a corner. Large rolling tool box stuffed neatly in the other corner at the front on either side of the work bench. All the other boating items that can't be left in the cuddy over the winter go in storage containers on shelves. The rotor tiller replaces the larger snow blower in it's spot, as the snow blower is gotten out and readied for use. that all moved into place the truck and the jeep fit nicely in the middle, God help me if Joan has to remove frost or snow from the windows of the jeep! She claims this would be a direct violation of our marriage license. I'm told this is in the fine print and it's not her fault I didn't read it before I signed it. Over the years now I'm begining to suspect I never saw the entire document, because there has to be seven or eight pages of fine print!

But anyhow now that I look back at the garage all arranged and stowed away and ready for the winter season. I have no idea what that woman is talking about. I do so have room to keep a motorcycle!

Veteran's Day

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns of the war to end all wars, World War 1 fell silent. In 1938 the Armies of Hitlers Germany and Stalins Russia invaded Poland. The guns of war were once again back to their bloody business. Korea, Vietnam and in countless other places around the world the guns of war have gone about their bloody business, since that day in 1918.

America and our nato allies are now doing battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. Once again the young men and women in uniform are going in harms way for their countries. One of my volunteer duties for the Red Cross is to attend pre-deployment briefings for Reservist and National Guard troops preparing to be deployed. I have seen the fear and concern for them in the eyes of their loved ones who will remain behind waiting for their return. Fearing that knock on the door, that so many have recieved when the military comes to tell them their loved one will not be returning home!

My own son was among one of the National Guard units to ship out to Afghanistan. I will never forget the look of fear in my wife's eyes as she watched her first born son board that bus.

So on this Veteran's Day I ask you to remember not only those who have and are serving, but the families they have left behind to wait and worry.

The trees in my yard have lost all their leafs, so today I went about cleaning the gutters on the house and the garage. Then set about attaching the leaf mulcher to my mower to clear the yard. You see in our town it's now against the law to rake and burn the leafs. I miss the smell of burning leafs in the fall. I understand all the reasons for not burning them now days. But to me the smell of leafs burning in the fall, is as midwest as the smell of hay being mowed. Being a normally law abiding person I haven't burned mine in years. Until today that is, I don't know blame it on the gray and dreary skies we have had of late or a yearning for the past. I made a small pile of leafs in the now empty vegitable garden bed and set them a blaze, sat back and dreamed of the days of my youth as I inhaled the pungent smell of burning leafs.

As my wife and I left a meeting I was speaking at for the Red Cross this morning, we were greeted by snow flurries. Now mind you I'm not all that opposed to winter and snow. Never ever for any reason whatsoever leave a child unattended in a locked car at anytime much less in the summer heat! I mean my God one would have to have spent their life living under a rock, to not know what the end result of closing the windows and locking the doors on a car with a child inside is going to be!

What should you do if you find a child locked in a car? Break a window and remove the child, make sure the child is breathing and safe, call 911. Myself after I've done all that I plan on breaking every window the car has left. This will be done only to keep me from beating the vehicles owner, until the proper authorities arrive

The Holidays are approaching, Thanksgiving is Thursday. Christmas is right around the corner. I know the economy is in a shambles and the future looks a little uncertain to say the least. But please remember those who are less fortunate then we are! I read today that the donations to the Marine Corps. Toy's for Tots drive is off to a very slow start. I haven't heard about the Salvation Army's Red kettle drive yet.

These are both very good and worthwhile organizations. They both do so much to lift the spirits of Children who may be forgotten by Santa Claus.

There can be nothing as bright as the smile of a child on Christamas Morning, and I would say nothing more sad then one who thinks Santa Claus has passed them by. So please one toy or a few dollars in the Salvation Army kettle.

Together we can make Christmas a little brighter for the Children

Recently one of the Deviants I watch, was more or less forced to remove most of her work from DA. Not due to DA but due to the fact that someone in her small town found out about her site. You see a lot of her work was nude art photography. None of her work was distasteful in any way as a matter of fact had the photos been painted by one of the old masters, they'd be hanging in some of the worlds finest museums. If Michelangelo had the use of a camera, you can be sure their would be photographs of the man who posed for the statue of David.
Before her work as a nude model was discovered she's was an asset volunteering in her local community. Now thanks to a few small minded and intolerant people, even her occupation is at risk!
I guess my point is, most of our ancestors came to the New World to escape persecution for their ways be it their faith or politics and even their personal beliefs. They came here to enjoy the freedom to live their life as they pleased. When did we become so intolerant and small minded, that we feel everyone should fit into the same mold!
Maybe what these upstanding citizens should be asking, is why one of their own was cruising the internet looking for photos that they consider to be so vile to begin with!

HISTORY 101
For those that don't know about history ... Here is a condensed version:

Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunters/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel. The wheel was invented to get man to the beer. These were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups:

1. Liberals, and

2. Conservatives.

Once beer was discovered, it required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans we re sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were weaker and less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men eventually evolved into women. The rest became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of Democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that conservatives provided.

Over the years conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. L iberals are symbolized by the jackass.

Modern liberals like imported beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and French food are standard liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: most of their women have higher testosterone levels than their men. Most social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, dreamers in Hollywood ,sail boaters, and group therapists are liberals. Liberals invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink domestic beer, mostly Bud which now has been bought by gay Germans. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big-game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the liberals remained in Europe when conservatives were coming to America . They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history:

It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to the above before forwarding it.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be forwarded immediately to other true believers and to more liberals just to tick them off.

In the meantime, I'm taking three full days off to get some rest and catch up here some at home. I must have been more tired then I thought, I slept for 12 straight hours last night. That's not like me to sleep that long. There's a lot of clean up that needs to be done in a few of the small towns like Gulfport yet, but my hope is the flood of 2008 is behind us now. We'll finish up the paper work and close the book on this seemingly never ending summer of disaster in the Midwest.

Devastation, there is no other way to put it! I was in the small town of Gulfport Illinois today with another member of my Red Cross chapter, or I should say as close as one can get to getting in to town. The Mississippi River has been back in it's banks for over three weeks now. So most people think the flood is gone and done. Not so for the poor town of Gulfport. We went down to do the damage assesment to the homes in Gulfport, only to find the town is still struggling to pump out the water that has been trapped in town by what is left of the Levee that was meant to protect them from the rising waters of the River. The estimate I was given is it may be another 15 to 20 days before the residents will be allowed back to thier homes. I was hoping that today would be my last day on this disaster, but I found myself promising the residents I did talk to that I would be back with a client services team after I filed my report on what we found. I will not let them down, my chapter diretor has given me the okay to open case work for them starting Wednesday.

After this last round of flooding many of their residents, don't seem to have much fight left in them. This is the third round of major flooding since 1993 and they are tired of starting over again. Still though if they do disband the towns it will be kind of sad. They are a piece of history fading away.
Well, after our return from Michigan. I went back to volunteering with flood relief work with my local Red Cross chapter, so for now anyhow I'm back at it.
