On my Twitter feed, I follow current Doctor Who composer Murray Gold.

Having "Twitter chatted" with him a few times before (very brief, and super informally, like any who Twitters with him or anyone else), I threw him the link to my "The Waters of Mars" inspired pic (featured at left, or if you're just seeing the journal, [link] ).

His reply was a simple "@onegemini That's very cool! ," but you know what? I'll take it.

So if it's good enough for Murray Gold, it can't be all bad, yeah?

Currently, I'm finishing up a few lingering commissions, waiting for approval on a few others, and...

...working on The Big Project.

What is the big project? I can't say right now (due to an NDA), but clues abound if you're observant enough. I can say that it's a comic book, and that it's a very personal project, working with a character that I've loved since childhood. This is very big for me in many ways, and that's saying something, as I've illustrated a line of children's activity books, official sketch cards for Marvel Entertainment, and logos for Hollywood production companies.

I promise to say more when I can.

In the meantime, I'll soon post a few commissioned sketch cards done over the last couple of months (some of which I thought I posted already... ah, well).

Word to the youngin's (the wise already know).

Back at the Joe Kubert School they used to ram one idea into our heads -- "Bad is not a style." Even Joe himself said this at one point.

What that means is learn the basics BEFORE you try to find a style. It might be fun to draw anime/manga, or just like Rob Liefeld (shudder ), or make up a style that you think is cool, but can you draw a good drawing of a tree? A baby? A portrait of your grandmother WITHOUT making them cartoony? I bet most pro anime/manga artists can, I bet Charles Shultz could, Bill Watterson DEFINITELY could. Trust me, it shows if you can't draw the basics; you drew Batman's ears nicely, but it looks like he has scoliosis, and not in a "stylized" way -- the whole piece suffers for it.

Walk before you run. Run before you fly. You don't get your artistic license until you prove you earned it.

Now go on. Grow.

There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what I've drawn here - [link] - so I'ma school ya (where your Google has apparently failed ya );

From Richard Starking's Wikipedia entry;

Richard Starkings is a British font designer and comic book letterer, editor and writer. He was one of the early pioneers of computer based comic book lettering and as a result is one of the most prolific creators in that industry.

Among things that he's lettered was a little Batman project called "The Killing Joke." (Note: "Little" in the last sentence was used sarcastically - if you've never heard of "The Killing Joke," I have no idea why you're watching my artwork.)

Hip Flask can be found in the pages of Starking's monthly comic book Elephantmen, and more info on that can be found at the official website, www. hipflask. com - [link]

And finally, a brief overview of Elephantmen, from the Hip Flask website;

2259: THEY ARE THE SURVIVORS of genetic engineering experiments and indoctrination by Doctor Kazushi Nikken and MAPPO, a sinister organization which sought to create suprahuman weapons of mass destruction.

FREED AND REHABILITATED by the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, the 'Unhumans' now live amongst men. Legitimized by the 'Elephantmen' act, they are nevertheless denied the right to bear arms and must survive on their wits alone.

So Hip Flask and Elephantmen are far from "funny animal" comics. Dig?

UPDATE: Got a quote from one of the leaders in data recovery (if not the leader) for under $1000 for the job. Usually it wouldn't be that cheap (no sarcasm -- that's cheap), but there were so many problems with my particular drive that they offered 50% off their normal rates for that drive experiencing these particular issues. Can't afford it now, but the contact gave me his info, and I'll be able to take advantage of that in the next few months when I can afford it.

Still need that new machine, though. And more/better backups.

UPDATE 2: My last posting of how much I'll end up paying for recovery has made a few of my techie friends emerge from the woodwork, flabbergasted I'd pay that much. So now I have a techie friend of a techie friend who might be able to do the repair for me (my friend would, but he's currently overseas), and probably for little or nothing, save for the costs of parts and HDs needed (need to cannibalize a similar drive, and need to have a drive to spill the old one onto). I could end up saving $500+ this way. Fingers crossed.

Things are a-brewin' here, but not too much I can say about official goings-on. So I'll mention a few currently unofficial things;

- Working on an image of an original character. I'll post that when it's done. It's unrelated to Wayward Son and all that, but is a story I'm writing, and hopefully drawing (hmmm?). It's not fanfic, but does belong to a character's universe that I do not own (hmmm?). Past that, I'll say nothing more until I post the image (and the minor background I give there), and if this becomes official. Best case scenario -- not until next year.

- Finishing up commissions. Might offer a few more, but come October and the big project I'll be booked until end of November/early December and won't be able to take on any more commissions of any sort. Get your shots in soon.

- On a more personal level, economy as bad as it is, things are going to take a gradual upturn for me and my family near the end of the year here. My wife is gainfully (and happily for once) employed, and I of course will be tackling the big project soon. These things mean happy Christmas for our kids, who have not gone without in the past, but have gone with little (aka, as much as we could afford). Seriously, if you talk to me in person about this, I crack up right about now talking about my kids having a really good Christmas this year. It's a happy thing.

One last thing - my time is limited, but if anyone would like me to brutally critique any of their work (preferably illustrations -- I'm no good at seriously critiquing pottery, sculpture, photography, etc), comment me, note me, whatever. Just get me the link, and I'll be honest without undo snark.

I've done this before, so we'll see if I can think of anything interesting and new (pardon for any repeats):

1. Last night the power went out during a storm, and sitting in my office, I reached for the nearest independent light source. Who knew the black light on the toy sonic screwdriver was so bright?

2. I worked at office supply store Staples when I was in high school. While there, I briefly met Charles Bronson (of "Death Wish" fame), and Bob Keesham, aka Captain Kangaroo. Both had retired to the area and Staples was the closest office supply. Other celebs from the same area (though some have moved away) include Michael J Fox, Katherine Zuniga, and Steven Tyler (him I've seen around town on a few different occasions, but never "met" him).

3. My wife's college roommate dated and later married the voice actor (who also attended the same college) of Skippy Squirrel from the Animaniacs. He's now a talented aspiring filmmaker.

4. Was interviewed for a podcast, but didn't realize they were filming as well. The video is terrible (not shot -- just makes me look awful). I look 50 and the shadows make it look like I have no teeth.

5. Since I was a little boy, I wanted to draw comics for a living. I've done my own creator-owned work, and indie work for others around 2000-2002 (which sucked - my work wise, and the people I worked with-wise), but now I'm finally getting a chance at something big by being able to work on [redacted], which will be out in March and April of 2010.

6. While I will continue to draw sketch cards on my own stock in the future, the set I'm finishing up now will be my last officially licensed set. It's not worth the time and money anymore (as I get paid so very little).

7. Extremism of any kind really annoys me. Any kind.

8. I think I'm teetering at the edge of a depression unseen in me since high school -- and in comparison, I had nothing to worry about back then.

Eh, line's (sic) are borders where one thing ends and another begins.

Those who are excellent draftsmen and those who are trying to improve their art know how lazy and uninspired this comment is.

Give me your best [online] examples of use age line weights to indicate shadows, line variation to add interest to a black and white piece, and/or tutorials and how-tos of the same.

You only improve through practice and, at the very least, pursuit of new techniques. The above comment represents the lazy artist who either doesn't care about improving, or figures they know it all already.

Show me you guys are better than this, like I believe you are.

This will be for full color, digitally drawn pieces such as "Doctor Who - The Fourth" [link] , "Warrior Born Pinup: Eclipse" [link] , and "Chom' Pazz" [link] (of course I wouldn't put a watermark over your image).

Singe character (full body allowed), minimal background (like you see in the above examples).

These are digital transmissions only - you don't get a hard copy, just the final image emailed to you (or loaded to FTP for your easy download). Final image will be 8.5"x11" at 300 dpi.

I usually charge $50+ for something like this, but as I'm in a bind, the price will be $25 per image (PayPal only).

Images can be displayed in your private collections, on your deviantART accounts, or personal webpages, but may not be resold, printed in any print or web publication for profit or in promotion of any product -- and that includes comics, books, etc. If you do wish to use the image outside of these parameters, I am willing to discuss the extra fees involved.

The last few bits - I'll do tasteful nudity, but no outright hardcore nudity, sex acts, or nudity or sex involving anthros. If you're not sure if your idea will pass my litmus test, run it by me first.

Sorry there hasn't been much new art or activity as of late. Been a rough month - lotsa stuff to do, a serious illness in the family, and now, I have a wrist injury, which, while treatable, probably won't go away for a week. But, things as they are, I can't stop to rest it. So, I'm typing and drawing through gritted teeth, like a Liefeld character.

Man, this sucks.

I will be appearing in Artist Alley at the annual Granite State Comic Convention (GraniteCon), in Manchester, NH, on Sunday, May 31st THAT'S TODAY! Check out their webpage here -- www.granitecon.com -- to see who else will be appearing, and what else will be going on. I do know there will be a bunch of other local comic talent, and three or four bigger name comic book creators. There will also be a wealth of Imperial Storm Troopers. Darth Vader, and even a life-sized Jabba the Hutt (no, not me you ass).

I'll have all the regular stuff with me -- prints, pre-drawn consketches, and sketch cards, official Marvel ones, and my own oneGemini Studios Sketch Cards.

Live at the con I'll do single character full-color sketch cards for $20 (head and torso mostly), and single character 8 1/2" x 11" black, white, and gray sketches for $20 as well (full body). I'll also do quick single character 8 1/2"x11" black, white, and gray head and shoulder sketches for $5.

If you're looking to take home a comic, for $5, you can get a copy of Afterburn #4 (published by Red 5 Comics). I was a pinup artist for the issue. For $5 I'll give you the Afterburn deal, and you can get the comic and an 11"x17" print of my pinup (usually a $10 print -- while supplies last, o'course).

I'll also have the last three my Wayward Son: Primer #1 Limited Edition comics with me (they come with a full-color Wayward Son sketch card and a signed and numbered COA). I will not have any regular editions with me, as all my own copies are sold out. This'll be one of the last times you can pick this comic up, as after June 31st, they will not be available for sale online through IndyPlanet anymore.

Details:
Two simple rules - your artwork must be your own original work and it must feature a zombie. All entries are due by midnight on May 31st, 2009. The winner will be decided by a small contingent of judges, comprised of site contributors and professional artists. The judges will not be eligible to compete in the competition. If you have any questions, please email Gordie at gordie.laughlin@gmail.com.

Prize:
The winner will receive a copy of The Walking Dead: Compendium, which features issues 1-48 of the critically acclaimed series, created by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore.

Let the zombie mayhem begin!

Also, I found out just today that there most likely will be a podcast from the event (streaming or not, I don't know). I may or may not get interviewed by Ben and Josh's Near Mint Comic Show - [CLICK]. They say they might interview the artists, and there are only three of us, so we'll see. Even if it doesn't stream, it will be available for download at the site after that.

Oh, and you might have noticed that the Wayward Son website has been temporarily closed. I have to put up some new art and text, so I wanted to get that closed off. It'll hopefully be open again tonight, but the the new art will be updated over the next week or so.
