Shunya Yamashita's Cocona

(Now with MORE pictures!)

At this year's Jacon I debuted my Cocona cosplay.
I'm very happy, excited, proud to have finally completed this project. Cosplays I've done in the past usually involved comissioning my costumes overseas, making them mostly out of already existing garments and lots of help from friends, and for the past year extreme costume recycling (aka using somebody else's costume or using old stuff over and over again).

Beginning the project

For Cocona, I had to make it special... This has been my dream cosplay for over a year now. The moment I saw the figurine I completely fell in love, and the artwork is even more gorgeous.

Getting ready for this costume involved months of workouts and weight training (greatly aided by Body-for-Life and P90X baby!) to get in shape to wear an outfit this skimpy. I also needed a very large budget and a lot of time since I planned on making all the parts myself.

Illustrator was a great tool to help me make the sword prop and armor, since I could trace the design directly from pictures or artwork to then scale it to the necessary sizes...

Cocona's Sword

Of course I was asked this a dozen times, and each person had their own ideas about how it was done, but since I planned on explaining it anyways and took some pics, here's how my sword was made:

The base is made from 1/4" oakwood. I printed the sword design I had traced in illustrator, glued it over the wood, and cut at it with a dremel (hand held cutting tool). One that was done, we cut a slit in the middle were a dowel would be inserted to make the handle of the sword. Thusly it was all glued up:

Styrofoam sheets were glued on each side of the sword with epoxy and then sanded down to resemble the thickness of the blade, 'its not a completely flat sword ya know...

The "heart" of the sword which is the intricate design in the middle was made entirely of several layers foamies painted over with glossy acrylic.

Here the bevel edge on the middle of the sword has been placed, as well as the cut-out of the heart design.

I'm trying to go in chronological order with the editing (not that any of you would care what order they're in >_< ) so I'm gonna be uploading them in chunks.

At first I was unsure of leaving the pictures as permanent deviations to my gallery, but I worked so hard on looking good in that costume (and helped a wee bit in making it), and then retouching the pics that they shall remain there as full fledged works of art by the chan.

I talked with some of the folks at the AGA club and we were wondering what could top the half-naked kitty girl cosplay, any suggestions? For me it was the ultimate cosplay evar! I'm more than willing to outdo myself in an even awesomer-sexier costume, so let me know.

Also, due to all the positive feedback we've been getting from this picture we actually thought of pulling of a calendar... how does THAT sound?

Ok ok, this is my real entry!

For starters, yea I did burn my hand today. I had some heavy waxing to do (cuz I rid ALL of my body from unsightly hairssss!!) so I put the tub o' wax in the microwave for 2 minutes (do not do this kids) and when I grabbed it to take it out the very hot and melty wax spilled on my hand. My left, thankfully.
So my costume shopping with *Takumy had to be postponed. Sorry, bitch!

Wauugh~ This hasn't been a very good year for the chan so far. Things are looking better now but I was having it pretty tough -emotionally- for the last couple of months.

I made a bunch o' prints late in preparation for Yasumicon. This was the first time I went to a con and had an artist table. I had no idea what to have for sale and with the little time I had left I made some standard prints, I'm also very slim in any worthwile material anyways...
You can buy these prints for super cheap while I still have some or before I start using the DA Prints system (does anyone buy from there?)

School/Work/BF/and Gym still take up much of my time, but I will try to put more stuff here cuz DA is fun when u actually draw and I've missed it much.

6 WEIRD [totally unexpected!] THINGS ABOUT THE CHAN!:

1. I like fuzzy posters. You know those posters they sell for kids? they would have some horses, or castles, or some popular cartoon character, or some LisaFrank art, w/e outlined with black velvet for you to paint with markers. Yeah, those things; I luv em. I always stare at them at the art stores or walmart, wishing I wasn't an adult so I could indulge in coloring them without regret.
The only two I actually own/colored are a mermaid hello kitty and the disney princesses which came in pink velvet.
2. I talk to myself in japanese. Before that it was french, and before that it was english (my native language is spanish). Seems whatever language I'm learning is the language I use to talk to myself in my head; whatta freak!
3. When I have a craving I don't forget it. Let's say one day I feel like eating Taco Bell, if that day I don't have it, then the next day I'm still gonna crave Taco Bell, maybe 2 days later I'd want some fried chicken, but I won't forget that I still want Taco Bell, until I have it.
4. I dance in the shower. Some people sing in the shower, I actually dance in it. And Para Para dance no less; its the only kind of dance I consider worthwile to my showering experience.
5. I LOOOOVE MILK. Milk is an obsession. I could drink it like water. After Moo told me about the evils of regular hormone blasted cows, I started buying organic milk, I tried every possible brand available to me until I found the milk that was the tastiest ^_^ Since I drink so much milk, I usually go for the 2% milkfat, although I prefer whole milk. If I don't have milk for several days I start getting cranky~
6. I have triangular nipples. just kidding! I'm running out of things to say, and since I read some people do certain things that I do too [link] I guess that makes them not weird. On a side note, naked men make me uncomfortable. VERY.

Last weekend I went to Orlando with Moo, Teri and Juankie (they went to JACON, we went to Sea World, Busch Gardens and Islands of Adventure). I discovered I am terrifed of rollercoasters. I didn't quite realize it until we were on the Kraken droping at 65mph and I couldnt feel my stomach.
So yah, I guess I gotta grow some guts to get on rollercoasters with my Moo.

Maaaannn~ It's been almost half a year since I wrote something worthwile here. So... unfortunately my computer died right before I left for my trip. I was getting some work done when my hard drive started to make a lovely noise and everything froze (for about the fifth time that day), and didn't come back

Now I'm waiting for my new comp to arrive and hoping I can recover all the files trapped there. And I was just about to update here! Nyaaarrgghh~ school starts next week and then I get sucked back into work.
At least I have a lot of stuff halfway done that I can finish up pretty soon.

About the °jark and $spyed crap; don't ask me cuz :
#1 I don't think I'm cool/popular enough to have any opinions that would really matter.
#2 From what I've seen it's just a bunch of unreliable information going around and the public overreacting.
#3 I'm gonna stay in DA cuz I need a place where I can showcase my art. I don't have my own website, and this is way BETTER than any other free community I've ever seen.

Now for the real point fo this journal. I watched Tsubasa Chronicle (the anime, if ya'll don't know too bad) yesterday. And all I gotta say is "WHAT CRAP!!"

Don't get me wrong, I love CLAMP and their stories are great, I am totally mesmerized by the way their styles evolve each and every time, but what has happened with the animation for their latest manga is just plain unfair. The character design is way off from the manga, the characters look flat, lifeless and made up of rectangles. In the second episode there was a frontal shot of Yuko that looked like if a 12 year drew it. The shading is at most nonexistent.
The animation is lazy, boring lacking action and emotion. Jeez~ the opening scene where Sakura and Syayoran are in the glass tube totally killed me! He knocked on that thing like if his wrist was injured.

Hello!!?? In the manga he wanted to BREAK that shit open with all his might. What a total loss of a great scene.

Even the opening sequence is so typical. They make the characters look so cliche, specially the uber cool Fai. I'm in tears here!! The voices oh gawd~ it sounded just like whatever else is out there, Sakura sounds way too calm and reserved, even if she is older now she is after all SAKURA!!! Chii didn't get enough screen time, and everyone else sounds like they're too bored cuz they've done this all their lives.

The only good thing was the music, not so much the opening, but the BG music. In fact ~Takumy is making me DL it right now. Although it feels completely out of place in the uneventful and dull animation.

Those colors... man, they're getting so lazy now that everything is digital, but they gotta brigten up those colors a bit, maybe it was the compression.

Oh well, I just wanted to rant about that. I was hoping to find a great new anime to get into, but guess not.

Oh yeah~ if you're gonna watch me, might as well watch

too, since most a lot of my labor went into that anywayz. Support the chan! Comment on the stuff that has lovely

Yes-- for those who wonder, my trip to St. Louis went wonderful. The con was amazing, everything worked out right. And things with

Going off to St. Louis next week for the next Kunicon. The way things are looking; it's gonna be MAJOR fun. I'll try to get a decent piece of art done before I leave for my trip (probably that overdue Kiriban).
I never write too personal stuff here but... let's just say I did what I had been wanting to do for a long time, and then I got the result I wanted, and then I realized how much it really sucks... but I still like it; even if it is no good. I'm just so dumb ~_~

w00tz! I got so many things to do, and I've been messing with my life so much @_@. Kicked out my husband from the house =but then got him back= I can't believe I almost divorced the poor guy. I'm sorry Pichiii~
Got lots of projects going on at work [manga! posters! flyers! panels! t-shirts! more posters!] So sorry if go around shamelessly promoting my work >_<. Most of my graphical efforts are being used on that, so I might as well showcase that too.
Bwa ha ha ha ha!! And the best part yet!! I'm gonna get to do a super cool cosplay for OtakuCon [link] Heh heh. If you guys still wanna see pictures of the chan in cosplay, I'll probably put them up in "scraps"

Oh man... I can't believe the nerve some people got...
Just stumbled on someone's gallery... and 90% percent fo their work is (badly) traced anime pics, who claims to have made these things "outta the top of my head" and then even signs it.
One thing is stealing artwork from other people in devart and hope to get away with it, but another is to trace pics from a published artbook, and say u did this stuff yourself!! They're both just as bad, but I think whoever tries the latter must be twice as stoopid for thinking it will go unnoticed >_>
Dude,if u dont have any drawing skills, then live with it, admit it, and let it be known you are tracing stuff for practice, fun and whatever darned reason you do. Yaaaaaaaargghhh I can't believe such front-faced cynism!!

Nya...
Just got kinda ashamed of myself after reading ~Kaze-Hime's journal. Poor girl. I totally understand how she feels.
I got to DA hoping to spread some of my art around. I wanted to be known by more people, even "gain some fame" if you will, but then, I start looking around and feel completely amazed at what other people are doing. It truly makes u feel like crap. It made me think "well I have the talent, why can't I draw/color like that!?" Nyah.... I'm just lazy, I say I want to, but I never try hard enough, I procrastinate evertyhing that is important and waste too much time on trivial things.
DA is evil nyu! So much time used up by looking at my messages, checking out other people, and refreshing my page to see if I got any new views (yesh, I'm that obsessed). But DA is good too, it has made me aware of many other artists and many other types of art that were unkown to me. It pushes me to want to become better and get more people to like my work. Even if it sounds selfish, that's how I feel: I do want to get the 100,000+ pageviews and the 300+ favourites, because then, that means, that all that people smiled or felt good because of smth I did, it made their day a little brighter if only for 10 secs.
I would keep on drawing for myself, just like I did before, but when I find that there's other people that enjoy the same things I do, it makes me feel good. I don't exactly draw to please (that's why you won't see me doing comissions, not anytime soon >_> ) I draw because I want to. If I wanna see a catgirl with a maid outfit, then I go draw it because it makes me all giddy inside. LOL, art is so weird... it's so hard to explain the kind of feelings that drive artists to do what they do nyu.
One thing I don't understand: how can they say the "hate" their art so firmly? I'd understand that you don't like how the pic came out in the end... but hating it? then why you drawing in the first place? If it's something you put so many hours of work into, and to make it look gorgeous no less, then why hate it. Although I could "hate" my stuff when I look at what other peeps are doing, but they're still dear to me nyu; cuz at least when I was drawing it, I thought it was the awesomest shit in the world!

See what I mean?? such contradicting emotions... I'm gonna stop this piece of crap right now nyu.

I'll post some sketch pages of the manga in Scraps as well as another mini-manga I did for myself, it's very rough.... it took my only like one day to do it, but for some reason, it holds a really special place in my heart too.
I would love it if I would get some comments in my scraps as well nyu!

I'm off doing bad things again (went to a sex shop nyo >_< watched porn for about 4 hours straight yesterday LOL!) and just meeting up with friends. Work has me really dead, and I don't feel like drawing anymore when I get home, cuz I gotta draw so much at work nyo >_< my hand hurts.
