i'm also going to try and get a photo show up and running, i've never done that before since i consider myself a " hobby" photographer. but now i think i have assembled enough good pictures over the years to give it a try.

well on to my rantings :]

first off, you cant separate "tags" & "graffiti" because tags are a part of graffiti. graffiti is a name that hold several techniques under its wings. wether it's murals, tags on a public building, throw-ups on a car or a beautiful burner on a train. it is a collective expression for ALL these things.
someone wrote that tags is not art. what about chinese/japanese calligraphy? maybe you dont think that is art either. for all you who have opinions, but never participated in the graffiti world, a tag takes a LONG time to develop, sometimes years. an example: if you know someone who is a graffitiartist, ask him to write your name and then you try to write it in "graffiti style". if you try you will se my point.

then about graffiti as art. graffiti is illegal! (if you don't do it on canvas or on a legal wall that is) but even though it is illegal, it doesent make it "non-art". we had some people here in sweden, in the 70s, who called themselves "brigadmålare", a loose translation would be "brigadepainters". they went out and painted on the city walls, illegally, and that was, and still is, considered art. the russian artform constructivism did the exact same thing. that is, they break out of the artists solitude, goes out and takes the right to express themselves. constructivism is also considered as art.
some other artdirections that are similar to graffiti, or have common features:
art noveau/jugend, ornamental, attention to detail, sharp contours and so on.
expressionism, strong colors & distortion.
popart, both originates from the big cities. easy to understand and they both depict the present rather unconstrained.

and some final thoughts. i don't really understand why people do not react to advertising as much as they react to graffiti. advertising is often badly done, it's trying to maipulate you, it is everywhere & have very little, or none, artistic value (with exeptions ofcourse).

art as crime. crime as art.
