Listening to last week:

-------------------------------------------

Why is it that with over 60 years of improvements in cameras, lens sharpness and film grain, resolution and dynamic range that no one has been able to equal what Ansel Adams did back in the 1940s?

Ansel didn't even have Photoshop! How did he do it? Most attempts fall short, some are as good but different like Jack Dykinga, but no one is the same.

Why is it that photographers loaded with the most extraordinary gear who use the internet to get the exact GPS coordinates of Jack's or Ansel's photo locations and hike out there with the image in hand to ensure an exact copy (illegal by US copyright laws and common decency), that they get something that might look similar, but lacks all the impact and emotion of the original they thought they copied?

I'm not kidding. A bunch of these turkeys used university astronomers to predict the one time in almost two decades that the conditions would match and had 300 of the clueless converge at just the right spot. They still didn't get the clouds, snow or shadows right. This makes Ansel or any other creative artist cringe. Of course they didn't get anything like what they wanted. Art is a lot more.

Compelling photographs come from inspiration, not duplication.

Someone asked "If I got a camera with only 6 or 7 MP, can I make good pictures with it?"

That reminds me about the guy who breaks a wrist and asks his doctor: "Doctor, will I be able to play the piano after this heals?" The doctor replies "Absolutely, no problem!" The man laughs, and points out that that's great, because he never could play the piano before!

Buying a Bösendorfer doesn't mean you can play the piano. Buying a great camera doesn't mean you can create compelling photographs. Good pianists can play on anything and a good photographer can make great images with a disposable camera.

As we all saw in The Blues Brothers, give Brother Ray a keyboard with a sticky action and he'll play so movingly that the whole town will be up and dancing.

Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just another artist's tool.

Why is it that even though everyone knows that Photoshop can be used to take any bad image and turn it into a masterpiece, that even after hours of massaging these images look worse than when one started?

Maybe because it's entirely an artist's eye, patience and skill that makes an image and not his tools. Even Ansel said "The single most important component
of a camera is the twelve inches behind it."

A camera catches your imagination. No imagination, no photo - just crap. The word "image" comes from the word "imagination." It doesn't come come from "lens sharpness" or "noise levels." David LaChapelle's work is all about his imagination, not his camera. Setting up these crazy shots is the hard part. Once set up, any camera could catch them. Give me David LaChapelle's camera and I won't get anything like he does, even if you give me the same star performers.

The only reason I have a huge lens in my photo on my home page is so I don't have to say "photographer" or "photography." The lens makes it obvious much quicker than words. That's what visual communication is all about: thinking long and hard to make your point clearly and quickly. I haven't used that huge lens in years.

Just about any camera, regardless of how good or bad it is, can be used to create outstanding photographs for magazine covers, winning photo contests and hanging in art galleries. The quality of a lens or camera has almost nothing do with the quality of images it can be used to produce.

Joe Holmes' limited-edition 13 x 19" prints of his American Museum of Natural History series sell at Manhattan's Jen Bekman Gallery for $650 each. They're made on a D70.

Another San Diego pro, Kirsten Gallon earns her living using Nikon's two very cheapest lenses, the 18-55 and 70-300 G.

There are plenty of shows selling shots from Holgas for a lot more money, just that those folks don't tell me about it. Holgas sell for $14.95, brand new, here. You can see an award-winning shot made with a Holga hanging in Washington, D.C.'s Hemicycle Gallery of the Corcoran Museum of Art in their 2006 Eyes of History competition of the White House News Photographers Association here.

Walker Evans once said "People always ask me what camera I use. It's not the camera, it's - - - " and he tapped his temple with his index finger.

Jesus Christ's dad Joseph built a masterpiece of a wooden staircase in a church in New Mexico in 1873, and does anyone care what tools he used? Search all you want, you'll find plenty of scholarly...

-------------------------------------------

Let my message centre build up for a while...

Dunno for how long really but, I had over 1300 deviations to look at.

I decided to pick out what I thought was good out of the lot.

Kinda sad really...

Only 8 Deviations out of over 1300, thats like 1 for every 160 deviations.

.6% of the deviations i thought were worth looking at..

Transfer that logic to the current amount of deviations on the site at this moment

which is a whopping 33.8 Million

.6% of that is only 202,800 Pathetic.

Super weak.

Anyhow, to those artists I bow. *bow*

Your work should brighten up my page and make it look better!

Ya'll keep up the good work! Ya'hear?

ehyukyuk..

Cheers for all the views, comments, favs and watches.
-------------------------------------------

For any of you who read [link]...

Ken Rockwell Facts:

* Ken Rockwell is the Chuck Norris of photography

* Ken Rockwell's camera has similar settings to ours, except his are: P[erfect] Av[Awesome Priority Tv[Totally Awesome Priority] M[ajestic]

* Ken Rockwell doesn't color correct. He adjusts your world to match his.

* Sure, Ken Rockwell deletes a bad photo or two. Other people call these Pulitzers.

* Ken Rockwell doesn't adjust his DOF, he changes space-time.

* Circle of confusion? You might be confused. Ken Rockwell never is.

* Ken Rockwell doesn't wait for the light when he shoots a landscape - the light waits for him.

* Ken Rockwell never flips his camera in portrait position, he flips the earth

* Ken Rockwell ordered an L-lens from Nikon, and got one.

* Ken Rockwell is the only person to have photographed Jesus; unfortunately he ran out of film and had to use a piece of cloth instead.

* When Ken Rockwell brackets a shot, the three versions of the photo win first place in three different categories

* Before Nikon or Canon releases a camera they go to Ken and they ask him to test them, the best cameras get a Nikon sticker and the less good get a Canon sticker

* Once Ken tested a camera, he said I cant even put Canon on this one, thats how Pentax was born

* Rockwellian policy isn't doublethink - Ken doesn't even need to think once

* Ken Rockwell doesn't use flash ever since the Nagasaki incident.

* Only Ken Rockwell can take pictures of Ken Rockwell; everyone else would just get their film overexposed by the light of his genius

* Ken Rockwell wanted something to distract the lesser photographers, and lo, there were ducks.

* Ken Rockwell is the only one who can take self-portraits of you

* Ken Rockwell's nudes were fully clothed at the time of exposure

* Ken Rockwell once designed a zoom lens. You know it as the Hubble SpaceTelescope.

* When Ken unpacks his CF card, it already has masterpieces on it.

* Rockwell portraits are so lifelike, they have to pay taxes

* On Ken Rockwell's desktop, the Trash Icon is really a link to National Geographic Magazine

* Ken Rockwell spells point-and-shoot "h-a-s-s-e-l-b-l-a-d"

* When Ken Rockwell went digital, National Geographic nearly went out of business because he was no longer phyically discarding photos

* For every 10 shots that Ken Rockwell takes, 11 are keepers.

* Ken Rockwell's digital files consist of 0's, 1's AND 2's.

* Ken Rockwell never focus, everything moves into his DoF

* Ken Rockwell's shots are so perfect, Adobe redesigned photoshop for him: all it consists of is a close button.

* The term tripod was coined after his silhouette

* Ken Rockwell never produces awful work, only work too advanced for the viewer

* A certain braind of hig-end cameras was named after people noticed the quality was a lot "like a" rockwell

* Ken Rockwell isn't the Chuck Norris of photography; Chuck Norris is the Ken Rockwell of martial arts.

Cheers for all the views, comments, favs and watches.

And college essays.

Ohya this:

I found something interesting on a someones blog, journal entry. Sorry, i cant remember who.

If we let A, B, C, D....X, Y, Z, all the 26 alphabets to be equivalent to 1%, 2%, 3%...25%, 26% respectively, we can yield some interesting results!!!

Hard Work : H+A+R+D+W+O+R+K=8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98%
Knowledge : K+N+O+W+L+E+D+G+E=8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11=98%
Love : L+O+V+E=12+15+22+5=54%
Luck : L+U+C+K=12+21+3+11=47%

How about money and sex...?

M+O+N+E+Y=13+15+14+5+25=72%
S+E+X=19+5+24=48%

Looks like not even money and sex can make our life 100%, or perfect...

However, when you have a good attitude...

A+T+T+I+T+U+D+E=1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5=100%

Your life will be most likely more perfect when your attitude is right!

I have one new deviation submitted.

Trying out new lighting techniques.

OK eyes hurt now.

Cheers for all the views, comments, favs and watches.

Until next time and whatever,

A very strange last week...

I've been attempting to write this on several occasions over the last few days.

This time I shall finish what I start.

So like, Sunday morning I was brought into hospital with chest pains...

Had all sorts of shit given to me through an IV.

Poked with needles.

Blood samples taken.

I also had an Angiogram.

Got out of hospital there on Tuesday.

Apparently there is no damage to my heart.

I'm feeling ok. Much better than I was on Sunday.

I've to take anti-inflammatories for the next week.

I have Myopericarditis: "inflammation of the muscular wall of the heart and of the
enveloping pericardium."

So, I've not been up to anything, have to rest for the remainder of the week.
Back to college on Monday. Yay

I really want to make some photos so bad.
So there might be a whole load of still life photos going up here if I can manage to bring myself to set some scenes up.

Right, keeping this short.

So I'll finish up just by saying...

I do indeed very much appreciate the support from my friends and family over the past few days.

It did help me.

You know who you are and I thank you kindly.

Listening to: Rockapella
Watching: The first 48

So where do we start,

Well, cous I'm now in college full time,

I needed my OWN (not my dads) Film SLR camera.

Came back from town with this..

Found that lens in the house, its utter shit...
But it works on full frame and it was free!
Now I wish I'd bought the 24-70L

This is my desk at the moment:

4x Ilford HP5
4x Kodak 400CN
2x random Kodak i found in the house

Got my first assignment today.

3 Portraits to shoot for next tuesday.

I've to do the portaits with Toma, my classmate. (dont kill me for the spelling!)
Thats what the 400CN is for.
She be the girl on the far left in the last photo in this journal.

Some random fun..

Alex, from my class. Striking a pose and yes, my camera got very wet. as we did also!

Some of my classmates.

I'm sure these photos in the journal prolly wont fit in your browser..
if not get a bigger screen!
I'm way too lazy to resize them properly.

Anyhow,
Time to shoot a BW roll or 2. Gotta have one to develop myself on friday.
Cheers,
Went to Dublin Zoo with ~astrobotty.
Got some shots.
See below..

I've just kinda noticed that my gallery is stocked with B+W images. 29 out of 71 are black and white.
I'm very pleased with this, my favourite style would be anything in B+W and I'm glad 40% of my deviations show this.
17)If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?

18)Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will
have materialized?

19)Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try?
24)If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a

What do you think this is?

I'll give you a hint; look at the title of this journal.

You guessed it yet?

Yup, this is fucking cat piss, all over my photo mounting boards.
8 of the like 20 are pictured here. Ruined.

The worst part is the damn smell.

So, that would be piss #1.

Yeah, so I got accepted into DIT. There, I shall be doing a 4 year course in Photography.

30D has over 1000 shutter shutterslaps now

piss #2 you are looking for?

Well, that’s personal. And last time I checked this isn't myspace so I won’t cry off about it here.

I saw someone wearing a damn cool t-shirt the other day, plain black with the text "Trust no bitch".
I can’t find a photo of the same one I saw on the net but here yaw go [link]

Oh and piss #3 is also personal! So, gotta finish this journal quickly so I can make it to the jacks (toilet). Aha

Getting back into kinda still life photography again, ya know kinda studio setups.
Well my cheapest equivalent!

Now, to clean the house from top to bottom...inside and out... you get the message.
That’s enough from me, hope I haven't said too much.

Thanks for your favs, watches (ha-ha I steal them ) and critique.
Critique is most important for me.

Just sitting here on my week off work this week.
Oh which reminds me; I got my self published in a boots magazine which is available in store.

I have a scan of it:
Front

And what matters is on this page
If you can’t read it you can view the full-size here

I'm well chuffed about that.

Jeeze, I need a stuff recently purchased section. I've bought so damn much and photography is so damn expensive!

I traded in my 350D and got a 30D. There is no comparison, the 30D is just....the perfect camera for me!
My old printer imploded, so I went nuts and bought an Epson RX620. It does it all. Now I can actually print my photos myself! And as you saw above, scan things too!
I got an IXUS 500 from work, great digicam. Fits in my shirt pocket!
Also got a new camera bag: Slingshot 200AW.

I've actually been taking photos recently, so I've been busy submitting. They are all there in my gallery, hint hint!

Well, it’s definitely summer here! With temperatures reaching over 30 degrees, and prolly over 50 in this room. (Computers)

And oh, nearly forgot. I got myself a DA subscription! yay!

Ok, enough of a short update for now. I wanna get outside while the weather is still pleasant here in Ireland!

Another updatey soon!

Heya all!

I've now been a member of DA for 1 year!

Equipment update:

Recently bought a Canon EF 70-200mm F4.0L.
Recently broke a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 MKII.
Recently bought a 430EX speedlite.

In time order... I went ahead and bought a 430EX speedlite. Bounce is so much nicer!
Then, my 50mm 1.8 broke. I had it in my camera bag and it wasn't dropped. But the lens just seems to have come apart inside. It still works, but the focus is very rattly and it clicks. Upon reading about the lens on the internet, it’s a steaming pile of...mess. Cheap POS.
Last week I got my EF 70-200mm F4.0L. (Em prepare for a rant here) It is super sharp. Like, you could cut yourself if you are not careful! Bokeh is excellent. Build quality is amazing, the lens hood is kickass, it even has suede on the inside! It is really contrasty as well, which is always sweet. And the auto focus...well I've never had a USM lens before so, this is so cool to me. Auto focus is fast, silent and so accurate. This lens will not be coming off my camera for a loong time. It’s just so good! L glass is worth the money. I shall never buy anything else ever again. Yes I have now been lured into the dark side. I would now be one of those L snobs. XD

Work:

Still working in a photo lab. Happy enough, as it is only for the year until I go to college.

College:

Submitted my portfolio to two colleges. My portfolio passed the min grade to get in. Now all I've to do is wait to see now in august if there is a place for me. It’s based on points you got in school exams + your portfolio score.

General Photography:

It’s difficult with the weird hours I work any given week. Two days off right now this week and I've been busy. So, can’t get any time for photos. But there is light at the end of the....Lens?

HOLIDAY!

I'm off to France on Saturday! yay! I really cannot wait. I'm off down south, Côte d'Azur. I'm going for 12 days.
